In the Old Testament we read about the fortold desolation and destruction that would come upon the Philistines. Jer. 47: 1-4 "The word of the Lord that came to Jeremiah the prophet against the Philistines, before that Pharaoh smote Gaza. Thus saith the Lord ; Behold, waters rise up out of the north, and shall be an overflowing flood, and shall overflow the land, and all that is therein; the city, and them that dwell therein: then the men shall cry, and all the inhabitants of the land shall howl. At the noise of the stamping of the hoofs of his strong horses, at the rushing of his chariots, and at the rumbling of his wheels, the fathers shall not look back to their children for feebleness of hands; Because of the day that cometh to spoil all the Philistines, and to cut off from Tyrus and Zidon every helper that remaineth: for the Lord will spoil the Philistines, the remnant of the country of Caphtor."
In the Book of Mormon I read about the qualitites of charity, the pure love of Christ. It suffers long, seeks not her own, is kind, is not envious or prideful, is not easily provoked. Charity never fails. And then an important key is given--telling us how to get this charity that is so vital to a true disciple of Jesus Christ. We must pray for it with all the energy of our hearts, asking the Lord to fill us with this love. If we do this, when Christ appears, we will be like Him. It isn't enough to just realize that we need to have charity in our lives and hope we can have it. We need to humbly plead with the Lord to bestow it upon us. Moro. 7: 45-48 "And charity suffereth long, and is kind, and envieth not, and is not puffed up, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil, and rejoiceth not in iniquity but rejoiceth in the truth, beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things. Wherefore, my beloved brethren, if ye have not charity, ye are nothing, for charity never faileth. Wherefore, cleave unto charity, which is the greatest of all, for all things must fail— But charity is the pure love of Christ, and it endureth forever; and whoso is found possessed of it at the last day, it shall be well with him. Wherefore, my beloved brethren, pray unto the Father with all the energy of heart, that ye may be filled with this love, which he hath bestowed upon all who are true followers of his Son, Jesus Christ; that ye may become the sons of God; that when he shall appear we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is; that we may have this hope; that we may be purified even as he is pure. Amen."
A verse from a thought booklet tells us that if anyone wants to serve Jesus, they must follow Him. And the Father will honor all who serve Jesus. John 12: 26 "If any man serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, there shall also my servant be: if any man serve me, him will my Father honour."
