In the Old Testament I read about how the king's house, the house of the Lord, and all the houses in Jerusalem were burned with fire and the walls around the city were broken down. Imagine the great destruction that took place here! Jer. 52: 13-14 "And burned the house of the Lord, and the king's house; and all the houses of Jerusalem, and all the houses of the great men, burned he with fire: And all the army of the Chaldeans, that were with the captain of the guard, brake down all the walls of Jerusalem round about."
In the D&C I read some familiar verses pertaining to how we receive revelation from God. It's not enough to merely ask and expect the Lord to give us the answers we seek without any effort on our part. We need to study it out in our own mind first and then ask if what we've come up with is right. D&C 9: 7-9 "Behold, you have not understood; you have supposed that I would give it unto you, when you took no thought save it was to ask me. But, behold, I say unto you, that you must study it out in your mind; then you must ask me if it be right, and if it is right I will cause that your bosom shall burn within you; therefore, you shall feel that it is right. But if it be not right you shall have no such feelings, but you shall have a stupor of thought that shall cause you to forget the thing which is wrong; therefore, you cannot write that which is sacred save it be given you from me."
Some verses with a thought booklet tell us the importance of keeping the commandments of the Lord and teaching them to our children. If we love the Lord with all our hearts and keep His commandments, it will be well with us. Deut. 5: 31-33; 6: 4-7 "But as for thee, stand thou here by me, and I will speak unto thee all the commandments, and the statutes, and the judgments, which thou shalt teach them, that they may do them in the land which I give them to possess it. Ye shall observe to do therefore as the Lord your God hath commanded you: ye shall not turn aside to the right hand or to the left. Ye shall walk in all the ways which the Lord your God hath commanded you, that ye may live, and that it may be well with you, and that ye may prolong your days in the land which ye shall possess.Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord: And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might. And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up."
