In the Book of Mormon I read that King Benjamin taught his sons that their language and knowledge of the Lord was able to be passed down to them because of the records which were kept. Mosiah 1:3-5 "And he also taught them concerning the records which were engraven on the plates of brass, saying: My sons, I would that ye should remember that were it not for these plates, which contain these records and these commandments, we must have suffered in ignorance, even at this present time, not knowing the mysteries of God. For it were not possible that our father, Lehi, could have remembered all these things, to have taught them to his children, except it were for the help of these plates; for he having been taught in the language of the Egyptians therefore he could read these engravings, and teach them to his children, that thereby they could teach them to their children, and so fulfilling the commandments of God, even down to this present time. I say unto you, my sons, were it not for these things, which have been kept and preserved by the hand of God, that we might read and understand of his mysteries, and have his commandments always before our eyes, that even our fathers would have dwindled in unbelief, and we should have been like unto our brethren, the Lamanites, who know nothing concerning these things, or even do not believe them when they are taught them, because of the traditions of their fathers, which are not correct."
In the New Testament I read that we need to hold fast and repent The Lord will come as a thief in the night and we don't know what hour He will come upon us. So we need to be prepared at all times. Revelation 3:3 "Remember therefore how thou hast received and heard, and hold fast, and repent. If therefore thou shalt not watch, I will come on thee as a thief, and thou shalt not know what hour I will come upon thee."
A verse with a thought booklet tells us to give thanks in all things. It's easy to give thanks for the blessings in our lives--not so easy to give thanks in ALL things when some of those things aren't so good. Do we give thanks for our trials and tribulations? For illnesses? For financial hardships? For natural disasters? All these things can bring us closer to the Lord and make us stronger if we'll turn to Him in times of trouble. And that is something to be thankful for. 1 Thessalonians 5:18 "In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you."
