In the Book of Mormon I read that many of the people listened to Alma's preaching, repented of their sins, and began to search the scriptures. However, most of the people just became angry with Alma and Amulek because they hated anyone who testified so plainly against their sins. Alma 14:1-3 "And it came to pass after he had made an end of speaking unto the people many of them did believe on his words, and began to repent, and to search the scriptures. But the more part of them were desirous that they might destroy Alma and Amulek; for they were angry with Alma, because of the plainness of his words unto Zeezrom; and they also said that Amulek had lied unto them, and had reviled against their law and also against their lawyers and judges. And they were also angry with Alma and Amulek; and because they had testified so plainly against their wickedness, they sought to put them away privily."
In the Old Testament I read that those who commit abominations shall be cut off. We are commanded to keep the ordinances of the Lord. Leviticus 18: 29-30 "For whosoever shall commit any of these abominations, even the souls that commit them shall be cut off from among their people. Therefore shall ye keep mine ordinance, that ye commit not any one of these abominable customs, which were committed before you, and that ye defile not yourselves therein: I am the Lord your God."
Some scriptures with a thought booklet tell us that the Lord is merciful and will not stay angry if we repent and return unto Him. We need to acknowledge our iniquity and turn from our backsliding. The Lord loves us and is eager to forgive! Jeremiah 3:12-14 "Go and proclaim these words toward the north, and say, Return, thou backsliding Israel, saith the Lord; and I will not cause mine anger to fall upon you: for I am merciful, saith the Lord, and I will not keep anger for ever. Only acknowledge thine iniquity, that thou hast transgressed against the Lord thy God, and hast scattered thy ways to the strangers under every green tree, and ye have not obeyed my voice, saith the Lord. Turn, O backsliding children, saith the Lord; for I am married unto you: and I will take you one of a city, and two of a family, and I will bring you to Zion:"
