In the Book of Mormon we read the powerful testimony of Amulek. He recounts the words of past prophets who testified of Christ and then adds his own testimony that he knows of himself that Christ would come and atone for the sins of the world. If not for this atonement, mankind would perish. Alma 34:7-9 "My brother has called upon the words of Zenos, that redemption cometh through the Son of God, and also upon the words of Zenock; and also he has appealed unto Moses, to prove that these things are true. And now, behold, I will testify unto you of myself that these things are true. Behold, I say unto you, that I do know that Christ shall come among the children of men, to take upon him the transgressions of his people, and that he shall atone for the sins of the world; for the Lord God hath spoken it. For it is expedient that an atonement should be made; for according to the great plan of the Eternal God there must be an atonement made, or else all mankind must unavoidably perish; yea, all are hardened; yea, all are fallen and are lost, and must perish except it be through the atonement which it is expedient should be made."
In the Old Testament we read that what God requires of us is to love and serve Him, and keep His commandments, which are given to us for our own good. Deuteronomy 10:12-13 "And now, Israel, what doth the Lord thy God require of thee, but to fear the Lord thy God, to walk in all his ways, and to love him, and to serve the Lord thy God with all thy heart and with all thy soul, To keep the commandments of the Lord, and his statutes, which I command thee this day for thy good?"
Some verses with a thought booklet remind us of how fleeting life can be. We might makes plans to do such and such at a future date, but we don't know for sure that we'll even still be around then. My life could be over tomorrow, or even today--so could yours. Life is like a vapour that appears for a little while and then vanishes. We need to take advantage of the time we have and make the most of it because we don't know when our life on this earth will end. James 4:13-15 "Go to now, ye that say, To day or to morrow we will go into such a city, and continue there a year, and buy and sell, and get gain: Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away. For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that."
