Daily Thoughts

In the D&C we read that God sent His Only Begotten Son into the world to redeem the world and whoever receives Him will be saved.  But those who reject Him will be damned.  No one knows the hour of His coming.  D&C 49:5-7 "Thus saith the Lord; for I am God, and have sent mine Only Begotten Son into the world for the redemption of the world, and have decreed that he that receiveth him shall be saved, and he that receiveth him not shall be damned— And they have done unto the Son of Man even as they listed; and he has taken his power on the right hand of his glory, and now reigneth in the heavens, and will reign till he descends on the earth to put all enemies under his feet, which time is nigh at hand— I, the Lord God, have spoken it; but the hour and the day no man knoweth, neither the angels in heaven, nor shall they know until he comes."

In the Old Testament we read a prophecy about the restoration of the gospel and the coming forth of the Book of Mormon.  Isaiah 29:10-14 "For the Lord hath poured out upon you the spirit of deep sleep, and hath closed your eyes: the prophets and your rulers, the seers hath he covered.  And the vision of all is become unto you as the words of a book that is sealed, which men deliver to one that is learned, saying, Read this, I pray thee: and he saith, I cannot; for it is sealed: And the book is delivered to him that is not learned, saying, Read this, I pray thee: and he saith, I am not learned. Wherefore the Lord said, Forasmuch as this people draw near me with their mouth, and with their lips do honour me, but have removed their heart far from me, and their fear toward me is taught by the precept of men: Therefore, behold, I will proceed to do a marvellous work among this people, even a marvellous work and a wonder: for the wisdom of their wise men shall perish, and the understanding of their prudent men shall be hid."

Some scriptures with a thought booklet tell the story of how a man wanted Jesus to settle a dispute he had with his brother regarding sharing the inheritance their parents had left.  Instead, Jesus put things into perspective and tried to make the man realize of how little importance money really is.  Jesus told the story of a man who had such great wealth that his barns wouldn't hold it all and he decided to tear them down and build bigger ones.  But then the man died, and what good was all his worldly wealth then? The only lasting treasure is richness toward God.  I've seen families split up and stop speaking to each other because of arguments over inheritances.  How sad!  Whenever our greed causes us to care more about money than about people, we can know that our lives are out of harmony with the gospel and we need to put our priorities straight.  Luke 12:13-21 "And one of the company said unto him, Master, speak to my brother, that he divide the inheritance with me. And he said unto him, Man, who made me a judge or a divider over you? And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth. And he spake a parable unto them, saying, The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully: And he thought within himself, saying, What shall I do, because I have no room where to bestow my fruits?  And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods. And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry. But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided? So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God."
