In the D&C we read that if we are purified and cleansed from all sin, whatever we ask for will be given to us. But we need to keep in mind that it will be given to us what we should ask for. If we're truly in tune with the Spirit, we won't ask for things that are not according to the will of the Lord. D&C 50:29-30 "And if ye are purified and cleansed from all sin, ye shall ask whatsoever you will in the name of Jesus and it shall be done. But know this, it shall be given you what you shall ask; and as ye are appointed to the head, the spirits shall be subject unto you."
Yesterday we read about the taunts of the Assyrians in saying Israel was foolish to trust in their God to deliver them. Today we read about the faithful prayer of Hexekiah, placing his trust in the living God. Isaiah 37:15-20 "And Hezekiah prayed unto the Lord, saying, O Lord of hosts, God of Israel, that dwellest between the cherubims, thou art the God, even thou alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth: thou hast made heaven and earth. Incline thine ear, O Lord, and hear; open thine eyes, O Lord, and see: and hear all the words of Sennacherib, which hath sent to reproach the living God. Of a truth, Lord, the kings of Assyria have laid waste all the nations, and their countries, And have cast their gods into the fire: for they were no gods, but the work of men's hands, wood and stone: therefore they have destroyed them. Now therefore, O Lord our God, save us from his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that thou art the Lord, even thou only."
A verse with a thought booklet contains the lamentations of the Lord about how He tries to help His people, but they refuse to allow Him to. He sends prophets to guide and direct them, but they kill them. He wants to gather them, like a protecting hen gathers her brood under her wings, but they won't cooperate. How frustrating this must be to a loving God! It's like the story of a family who found three abandoned baby bunnies and lovingly fed them with an eyedropper and did their best to care for them. But the bunnies were wild and never ceased trying to get away from them. They would squeal and shake in fear whenever they were picked up. The family had only the best intentions for the bunnies, but the bunnies persisted in trying to get away from them. The Lord has only the best of intentions for us. He send us prophets to guide us along the pathway that will lead to our eternal happiness. When we resist and pull away from Him, we're as ridiculous as those bunnies, trying to run away from the very people who want to help them. Luke 13:34 "O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, which killest the prophets, and stonest them that are sent unto thee; how often would I have gathered thy children together, as a hen doth gather her brood under her wings, and ye would not!"
