In the P of GP we read that Joseph was commanded not to take the plates at that time, but to return to the place at the same time every year, at which time he received additional instruction. Joseph Smith History 1:53-54 "I made an attempt to take them out, but was forbidden by the messenger, and was again informed that the time for bringing them forth had not yet arrived, neither would it, until four years from that time; but he told me that I should come to that place precisely in one year from that time, and that he would there meet with me, and that I should continue to do so until the time should come for obtaining the plates. Accordingly, as I had been commanded, I went at the end of each year, and at each time I found the same messenger there, and received instruction and intelligence from him at each of our interviews, respecting what the Lord was going to do, and how and in what manner his kingdom was to be conducted in the last days."
In the New Testament we read that even though Jesus was the Son of God, He still needed to learn obedience by the things which He suffered. If even Jesus needed to go through suffering, how much more so do we need to go through trials and tribulations in order to be refined and perfected and learn to obey God. Hebrews 5:8 "Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered;"
In a verse with a thought booklet the Lord tells Jacob that he should fear not to go down into Egypt, for the Lord wold make of him a great nation. Sometimes the Lord sends us into unknown, scary situations that are out of our comfort zones. But if we will trust in the Lord we have no need to fear, and eventually good will come of it. He will be with us to help and guide us. We don't need to face the unknown alone. Genesis 46:3 "And he said, I am God, the God of thy father: fear not to go down into Egypt; for I will there make of thee a great nation:"
