In the P of GP we read about how as soon as Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery arose from the waters of baptism, they were filled with the spirit and were able to prophecy. Joseph Smith History 1:73 "Immediately on our coming up out of the water after we had been baptized, we experienced great and glorious blessings from our Heavenly Father. No sooner had I baptized Oliver Cowdery, than the Holy Ghost fell upon him, and he stood up and prophesied many things which should shortly come to pass. And again, so soon as I had been baptized by him, I also had the spirit of prophecy, when, standing up, I prophesied concerning the rise of this Church, and many other things connected with the Church, and this generation of the children of men. We were filled with the Holy Ghost, and rejoiced in the God of our salvation."
In the New Testament we read that we are not redeemed by gold and silver, but through the precious blood of Jesus Christ, who was without spot or blemish and who was foreordained from the foundation of the world to be our Redeemer. 1 Peter 1:18-19 "Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:"
Some verses with a thought booklet tell us that Jesus told His disciples that He was going to be betrayed, mocked, scourged, and crucified but that He would rise again on the third day. Jesus knew what was going to happen to Him (as we read in the paragraph above, it was foreordained from the foundation of the world). But not only was He going to suffer and die, but He was going to rise again! Matthew 20:17-19 "And Jesus going up to Jerusalem took the twelve disciples apart in the way, and said unto them, Behold, we go up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man shall be betrayed unto the chief priests and unto the scribes, and they shall condemn him to death, And shall deliver him to the Gentiles to mock, and to scourge, and to crucify him: and the third day he shall rise again."
