Daily Thoughts

In the Book of Mormon we read that the Nephites multiplied in the land and increased in their wealth. This was in fulfillment of the promise that the Lord had made to them that if they would keep the commandments, they would prosper in the land. But the prophets warned them that if they fell into transgression, they would be destroyed. The prophets taught them to look forward unto the Messiah and believe in Him. By doing this, the people were stirred up unto repentance. Jarmon delivered the plates to his son Omni.  Jarom 1:8-15 "And we multiplied exceedingly, and spread upon the face of the land, and became exceedingly rich in gold, and in silver, and in precious things, and in fine workmanship of wood, in buildings, and in machinery, and also in iron and copper, and brass and steel, making all manner of tools of every kind to till the ground, and weapons of war—yea, the sharp pointed arrow, and the quiver, and the dart, and the javelin, and all preparations for war. And thus being prepared to meet the Lamanites, they did not prosper against us. But the word of the Lord was verified, which he spake unto our fathers, saying that: Inasmuch as ye will keep my commandments ye shall prosper in the land. And it came to pass that the prophets of the Lord did threaten the people of Nephi, according to the word of God, that if they did not keep the commandments, but should fall into transgression, they should be destroyed from off the face of the land.  Wherefore, the prophets, and the priests, and the teachers, did labor diligently, exhorting with all long-suffering the people to diligence; teaching the law of Moses, and the intent for which it was given; persuading them to look forward unto the Messiah, and believe in him to come as though he already was. And after this manner did they teach them. And it came to pass that by so doing they kept them from being destroyed upon the face of the land; for they did prick their hearts with the word, continually stirring them up unto repentance. And it came to pass that two hundred and thirty and eight years had passed away—after the manner of wars, and contentions, and dissensions, for the space of much of the time.  And I, Jarom, do not write more, for the plates are small. But behold, my brethren, ye can go to the other plates of Nephi; for behold, upon them the records of our wars are engraven, according to the writings of the kings, or those which they caused to be written.  And I deliver these plates into the hands of my son Omni, that they may be kept according to the commandments of my fathers."

In the Old Testament we read about how the foundations of the temple were laid with great rejoicing and praising the Lord. Indeed, any time a temple is built, that is a great reason to praise the Lord and rejoice, even in our day!  Ezra 3:10-11 "And when the builders laid the foundation of the temple of the Lord, they set the priests in their apparel with trumpets, and the Levites the sons of Asaph with cymbals, to praise the Lord, after the ordinance of David king of Israel.  And they sang together by course in praising and giving thanks unto the Lord; because he is good, for his mercy endureth for ever toward Israel. And all the people shouted with a great shout, when they praised the Lord, because the foundation of the house of the Lord was laid."

Some verses with a thought booklet are the same ones that inspired Joseph Smith to pray and bring his questions to God.  They tell us that if we lack wisdom, we can ask God in faith, nothing wavering, and it will be given to us.  James 1:5-6 "If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed."
