In the Book of Mormon we read that the people began to prosper by degrees and did not suffer with hunger. Because many men had died in battle, there were many widows. King Limhi commanded that these widows be supported and helped. It's important to help those in need and give generously. Mosiah 21:16-17 "And it came to pass that they began to prosper by degrees in the land, and began to raise grain more abundantly, and flocks, and herds, that they did not suffer with hunger. Now there was a great number of women, more than there was of men; therefore king Limhi commanded that every man should impart to the support of the widows and their children, that they might not perish with hunger; and this they did because of the greatness of their number that had been slain."
In the Old Testament we're told that when we show mercy to the poor, we honor our Maker. But if we oppress the poor, we show reproach for God. How we treat the poor is a reflection on how we feel about God. Proverbs 14:31 "He that oppresseth the poor reproacheth his Maker: but he that honoureth him hath mercy on the poor."
In some verses with a thought booklet we're given a reminder of how much we're valued in the sight of God. Five sparrows might be sold for two farthings, but not one of them is forgotten by God. But we are worth more than many sparrows and God even knows the number of the hairs on our heads. Next time we're feeling worthless, we need to remember how important we are to God and how much He loves us as His children. Luke 12:6-7 "Are not five sparrows sold for two farthings, and not one of them is forgotten before God? But even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not therefore: ye are of more value than many sparrows."
