Daily Thoughts

In the Book of Mormon we read that as time passed, the people began to forget the signs and wonders which they had seen and heard.  They began to harden their hearts and disbelieve what they had experienced. They tried to rationalize it away, telling themselves that it was wrought by the power of men, or that it was of the devil. Satan was able to lead away the hearts of the people, tempting them.  They began to was strong in their iniquity and they lost faith. Indeed, these things happened only 9 years after the sign was given.  How quickly people forget the things of the Lord and turn from Him. This is why it's so important to be constantly doing the things that will draw us closer to God. 3 Nephi 2:1-8 "And it came to pass that thus passed away the ninety and fifth year also, and the people began to forget those signs and wonders which they had heard, and began to be less and less astonished at a sign or a wonder from heaven, insomuch that they began to be hard in their hearts, and blind in their minds, and began to disbelieve all which they had heard and seen—  Imagining up some vain thing in their hearts, that it was wrought by men and by the power of the devil, to lead away and deceive the hearts of the people; and thus did Satan get possession of the hearts of the people again, insomuch that he did blind their eyes and lead them away to believe that the doctrine of Christ was a foolish and a vain thing.  And it came to pass that the people began to wax strong in wickedness and abominations; and they did not believe that there should be any more signs or wonders given; and Satan did go about, leading away the hearts of the people, tempting them and causing them that they should do great wickedness in the land.  And thus did pass away the ninety and sixth year; and also the ninety and seventh year; and also the ninety and eighth year; and also the ninety and ninth year;  And also an hundred years had passed away since the days of Mosiah, who was king over the people of the Nephites. And six hundred and nine years had passed away since Lehi left Jerusalem.  And nine years had passed away from the time when the sign was given, which was spoken of by the prophets, that Christ should come into the world.  Now the Nephites began to reckon their time from this period when the sign was given, or from the coming of Christ; therefore, nine years had passed away."

In the Old Testament we read that all the work of the tabernacle was finished, and the Israelites had done everything exactly as the Lord had commanded Moses.  When Moses saw that they had in fact done all the work exactly as the Lord had commanded, Moses blessed them.  Exodus 39:32, 43 "Thus was all the work of the tabernacle of the tent of the congregation finished: and the children of Israel did according to all that the Lord commanded Moses, so did they.  And Moses did look upon all the work, and, behold, they had done it as the Lord had commanded, even so had they done it: and Moses blessed them."

Some verses with a thought booklet tell us that Jesus taught that He would be killed but after three days He would be resurrected.  Peter rebuked Him for saying this, but Jesus told all His disciples that whoever would take up their cross and follow Him would be saved.  But if were ashamed of Christ before men, He would be asahmed of them when He came in glory. What good is it if we gain the whole world but lose our own souls? Being a Christian demands a life of sacrifical service.   Mark 8:31-38 "And he began to teach them, that the Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders, and of the chief priests, and scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. And he spake that saying openly. And Peter took him, and began to rebuke him.  But when he had turned about and looked on his disciples, he rebuked Peter, saying, Get thee behind me, Satan: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but the things that be of men. And when he had called the people unto him with his disciples also, he said unto them, Whosoever will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.  For whosoever will save his life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel's, the same shall save it. For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?  Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?  Whosoever therefore shall be ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation; of him also shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he cometh in the glory of his Father with the holy angels."
