Daily Thoughts

In the Book of Mormon we read about how God will judge everyone according to their works that they performed during the days of their probation, and the righteous will be separated from the wicked. If a person dies in their wickedness they will be cast off as to things which are spiritual and pertaining to righteousness. If their works are filthy, they cannot dwell in the Kingdom of God. The wicked are rejected fro the righteous and cannot partake of the fruit of the tree of life, which is most desirable above all other fruits.  1 Nephi 15:30-36 "And I said unto them that our father also saw that the justice of God did also divide the wicked from the righteous; and the brightness thereof was like unto the brightness of a flaming fire, which ascendeth up unto God forever and ever, and hath no end. And they said unto me: Doth this thing mean the torment of the body in the days of probation, or doth it mean the final state of the soul after the death of the temporal body, or doth it speak of the things which are temporal?  And it came to pass that I said unto them that it was a representation of things both temporal and spiritual; for the day should come that they must be judged of their works, yea, even the works which were done by the temporal body in their days of probation.  Wherefore, if they should die in their wickedness they must be cast off also, as to the things which are spiritual, which are pertaining to righteousness; wherefore, they must be brought to stand before God, to be judged of their works; and if their works have been filthiness they must needs be filthy; and if they be filthy it must needs be that they cannot dwell in the kingdom of God; if so, the kingdom of God must be filthy also. But behold, I say unto you, the kingdom of God is not filthy, and there cannot any unclean thing enter into the kingdom of God; wherefore there must needs be a place of filthiness prepared for that which is filthy. And there is a place prepared, yea, even that awful hell of which I have spoken, and the devil is the preparator of it; wherefore the final state of the souls of men is to dwell in the kingdom of God, or to be cast out because of that justice of which I have spoken. Wherefore, the wicked are rejected from the righteous, and also from that tree of life, whose fruit is most precious and most desirable above all other fruits; yea, and it is the greatest of all the gifts of God. And thus I spake unto my brethren. Amen."

In the Old Testament we read that the Lord reminded the children of Israel that He had brought them up out of the land of Egypt, to be their God.  And they should be holy, as He is holy.  Leviticus 11:45 "For I am the Lord that bringeth you up out of the land of Egypt, to be your God: ye shall therefore be holy, for I am holy."

Some verses with a thought booklet tell us that Elijah was a human just like we are, but when he prayed earnestly that rain wouldn't fall, it didn't rain for three and a half years.  Then when he prayed again, the sky sent down rain and the earth brought forth crops. Since Elijah could start and stop a drought trough prayer, obviously he was a man of mighty, powerful prayer.  But there was one prayer of Elijah's that God did not answer.  When he became depressed and discouraged, he sat under a Juniper tree and asked God to let him die.  Instead of answering his prayer, the Lord sent him an angel to tell him to rise up and eat. Sometimes God answers our prayers just the way we want Him to.  Other times He tells us no, or has something better in mind for us.  He knows what is best for us and will answer our prayers accordingly.  We can safely place our trust in Him. From these verses we also learn something else--that even the best of people sometimes become discouraged and disheartened and feel like giving up.  But if they turn to the Lord, He will help them.  James 5:17-18 "Elias was a man subject to like passions as we are, and he prayed earnestly that it might not rain: and it rained not on the earth by the space of three years and six months. And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth brought forth her fruit."  1 Kings 19:4-5 "But he himself went a day's journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a juniper tree: and he requested for himself that he might die; and said, It is enough; now, O Lord, take away my life; for I am not better than my fathers. And as he lay and slept under a juniper tree, behold, then an angel touched him, and said unto him, Arise and eat."

BYU Education Week Notes -- Wednesday

HAVING MANY REVELATIONS DAILY: THE SPIRIT'S ROLE IN RECOGNIZING, UNDERSTANDING, AND LIVING BY PRINCIPLE (STEPHEN K. HUNSAKER): We need constant guidance to survive in the world today. Living a principle driven life opens up the windows of heaven for daily revelation, frees us from the recipes, circumstances and rules that limit the revelations we desire, and helps us to overcome our fears that limit revelation in our lives. We need a constant connection with the heavens.  To be driven by recipe means that we follow a specific recipe we have created form our own perceived idea of success exactly to get a result--the one future outcome we desire.  To be driven by circumstance is to allow our circumstances to influence our choices or to make decisions based upon the most desirable or easiest immediate outcome.  To be driven by rules means we are dependent upon specific, external parameters to make our decisions for us. When a question is asked, it authorizes the Holy Ghost to teach.  When the Holy Ghost teaches us, life becomes different.  A principle is an enduring truth, a law, a rule you can adopt to guide you in making decisions.  Generally principles are not spelled out in detail.  That leaves you free to find your way with an enduring truth, a principle, as your anchor.  Sometimes we just want the Lord to tell us what to do, but instead He gives us general counsel about the issues or problems we are facing.  He is trying to empower us with eternal truths that will help us govern ourselves. We need to live by principle, not by the circumstances before us. Ezra Taft Benson said, "Usually the Lord gives us the overall objectives to be accomplished and some guidelines to follow, but He expects us to work out most of the details and methods.  The methods and procedures are usually developed through study and prayer and by living so that we can obtain and follow the promptings of the Spirit.  Less spiritually advanced people, such as those in the days of Moses, had to be commanded in many things.  Today those spiritually alert look at the objectives, check the guidelines laid down by the Lord and His prophets, and then prayerfully act without having to be commanded in all things.  Sometimes the Lord hopefully waits on His children to act on their own, and when they do not, they lose the greater prize, and the Lord will either drop the entire matter and let them suffer the consequences or else He will have to spell it out in greater detail.  Usually, I fear, the more He has to spell it out, the smaller is our reward." The more He commands, the less He can bless us. Bruce R. McConkie said, "We're supposed to learn correct principles and then govern ourselves.  We make our own choices, and then we present the matter to the Lord and get His approving, ratifying seal." He wants us to learn.  A man had two horses, Laman and Nephi.  Laman was high spirited and it was a battle to get him to do what you wanted him to do.  Nephi loved to do what his owner wanted him to do.  The man would put his grandchildren on Nephi, but never on Laman.  One wanted to please and the other only obeyed when he had to.  Both horses were loved, but only one was trusted.  God loves all His children, but He doesn't trust them all. God loves it when He finds a child who will willingly submit.  When he and his wife first got married they went to the Lord and asked Him when they should start having children.  His answer, "Will you let me send them as I will?"  He sent them 10 children in 15 years.  His wife has been pregnant or nursing during those entire 15 years, except for one month.  After child 8, his wife felt like she was losing her mind.  She went to the Lord in prayer and said, "I cannot do this anymore!"  The Lord answered back, "Okay.  But can I send a couple more?"  As two more came they beautified their family in such a way that they can't imagine their family without them.  After the 10th child, his wife got the confirmation that she stands right before God.  It's still very difficult to raise 10 children and sometimes his wife still feels like she's losing her mind, but she knows she's done what the Lord wants and knows that He will help her get through it.  Sometimes it's hard to keep the commandments.  We can make a choice to live by truths that God teaches us, in spite of what the world says.  He's a seminary teacher and doesn't make much money, so it's not easy raising 10 children.  He was very frustrated that he couldn't afford to send his son on a mission.  He prayed about it and the answer was that his mother in law would pay for the mission.  His wife's mother is not in the church and hates the church, but she is paying for her grandson's mission.  And she'll be blessed for it. The Word of Wisdom doesn't spell out everything that we shouldn't be taking into our bodies.  Arsenic isn't mentioned in the Word of Wisdom, and it's not habit forming, but we'd be wise not to eat it.  He who must be commanded in all things is a slothful and unwise servant.  The Lord commanded Moses to take the children of Israel into a place where there was no way out, and the Egyptians were coming in after them. Only when they were in this dead end spot did He part the Red Sea so they could cross.  Sometimes in our lives, the Lord leads us to a spot where there is no way out, except through His intervention.  We like to feel like we're in control and can handle things on our own, so it takes faith to allow the Lord lead us into a situation where we need Him to get out.  The Lord will lead us into many situations where we need to let go of our fears and trust in Him. It's scary to leave our comfort zone. His mother went through two divorces, one when he was 6 and one when he was 11.  The losses of his father and his step father were very traumatic for him.  So when he dated the woman who would become his wife he was scared to death.  He broke up with her three times because he was so scared.  Finally she told him to make up his mind one way or the other because she wasn't going to play these games anymore.  At that point he decided to do it and they got engaged.  The six weeks before they got married were really scary.  The Lord told Him he would support Him and He has.  They've been married for 21 years now. We need to be faithful even if circumstances are darker than 10,000 midnights and it seems that every trace of God has vanished.  We still need to bow our heads and obey.

I KNOW HEAVENLY FATHER LOVES ME. I FEEL HIS LOVE WHEN I SERVE OTHERS (ALLISON G. BELNAP):  Bear one another's burdens. Mourn with those who mourn.  Comfort those in need of comfort.  That He may pour His Spirit out more abundantly. When we're baptized we take Christ's name upon us and promise to obey His commandments and always remember Him. This means we are willing to serve.  Heavenly Father is a vastly loving God.  When we bear one another's burdens, we're acting as an agent for Christ and by so doing we're coming to Christ.  As we come to Christ, we draw near to Heavenly Father. As we do what Christ would have us do for His Heavenly Father's children, we feel His love and His approval.  Service brings us closer to the Lord and allows us to engage in the work He would be doing if He was on the earth. Service helps us express pure charity. Look upward and outward.  Become a personal minister.  Develop inclinations of charity. Forget about yourself and start concentrating on others.  Look to God and live.  Approach Him daily in prayer. Press forward.  Find ways to lift and bless others and then we can feel the inspiration of God's love.  When we choose to look up we demonstrate that we acknowledge that His ways are higher than our ways and we're willing to trust in Him. We need to love our neighbor as ourselves. Lift the hands that hang down.  Often our prayers are answered by the words and actions of those around us.  And we can be the answers to other people's prayers if we'll be sensitive to the promptings of the Lord. Don't miss out on opportunities to serve others.  If two men walk together and ones falls, the other one can lift him up.  But woe unto the man who walks alone and falls, with no one to help him. When we receive a prompting about someone we need to help, we need to act on that prompting. Pray for spiritual eyes to see and for a discerning heart. Give a hug, make a phone call, listen. When you go to church your primary purpose is to partake of the sacrament and your next most important purpose is to look for ways you can bless the lives of other people. She has felt promptings to watch fussy babies for other mothers so they could attend their meetings, taking them out into the hall. When President Hinckley was discouraged while on his mission, his father told him to forget himself and go to work. He went to work serving those around him, and his focus shifted from worrying about himself to trying to bless the lives of others.  The Lord will strengthen us.  Attend to the wants and needs of others.  Do the work of God in the way He would have us do it.  There could not be a more choice calling than this.  Your personal ministry is separate from your calling at church.  It means that you look around and find the way the Lord wants you to influence others.  When she was going through her first pregnancy, there were problems and her doctor ordered her to stay in bed.  Her visiting teacher came and cleaned her house and did her laundry, and did everything for her she could.  To this day she loves that visiting teacher and all she did for her.  She had later visiting teachers who simply got to know her and offered her their friendship and support.  When she was attending law school, which was difficult for her, she had to have surgery and two young women who attended law school with her came to the hospital and reviewed their notes with her.  All these people ministered to her according to her needs and wants.  The Lord will strengthen us so that we can bear the burdens we have with ease. As we bear one another's burdens, we will become a Zion like people and qualify for all the blessings of the Lord.  Are we doing all we can to help the downtrodden people who cross our path?  Sometimes all it takes is a smile. The Savior always made time to listen. He did not interrupt people or break into conversations.  He met people in multiple locations.  He didn't pay attention to boundaries, He extended His love to all.  As we become personal ministers, we become more like Christ.  Miracle after miracle occurs in Christ's ministry while He was on His way to something else.  The same can be true of us.  Service often comes at inconvenient times when we have other things to do.  Strive to attend to the wants and needs of others.  Follow Jesus' example.  Are we following God's will in becoming the person He would have us become?  Our service does not have to be showy to be effective.  Small things can make a difference to others. Develop an inclination towards charity. Partake of fruit and learn to share it with others. First we need to develop the desire to have charity. When we read about all the qualities of charity, it can make us feel overwhelmed.  We can't be perfect all at once.  But charity never faileth.  When we're trying to be charitable, we will not fail. Very few of us are inclined to charity naturally. We give in to the natural man.  But were instructed to overcome the natural man incline ourselves toward spiritual things. As we act and strive to be more charitable, the Lord will help us on that path.  Compassion is knowing someone else needs help and wanting to help. Almost all of us are blessed with some measure of compassion.  The key to turning that compassion into charity is striving to follow the Savior. When you have a difficult experience, write down how you feel.  Then when you find other people having the same difficult experience, you can read what you wrote and be reminded of what it felt like so you can be compassionate toward them. Even if we don't have a natural inclination toward charity, the Lord will help us be an effective instrument for good in the lives of others.  If we want to feel an increase of love from Heavenly Father, we need to do what we can to bless the lives of others.  When you have small children, the biggest focus of your service needs to be on them.  There are times and seasons for everything. Seek the Lord's direction.  There will be times in your life when thee will be more service inside the family and other times when there will be more service outside the family.  The Lord will guide you as to where your service needs to be.  We must lose our lives to find our lives. Become true disciples of Christ. Ask and see where the Lord can use your specific abilities to bless the lives of others.  Then act!

ENJOYING THE EVERYDAY JOURNEY OF LIFE--MEASURING SUCCESS, PRIORITIES, AND HAPPINESS (STAN G. CRIPPEN): When he first joined the church, he thought that all members of the church were perfect.  He was really excited about attending general conference took notes on the counsel given, and turned it in to be printed in the ward newsletter.  It was a huge list of things o do which sounded very overwhelming.  If if we don't do things step by step, we can feel overwhelmed.  If we don't make deposits into our spiritual account, we'll get to the point of wearing away.  We need to enjoy the everyday journey of life.  There is so much to enjoy!  Happiness is the object and design of our existence.  Don't be an ark steadier.  Someone reached out his hand to steady the ark and he got zapped.  We need to obey.  It was not his job or his stewardship.  How often do we create mental to do lists of things not within your stewardship. We end up putting extra pressure on ourselves. If you're a grandparent, don't overstep your bounds trying to tell your children how to raise their children.  Allow others to have their own curriculum.  We may not have the energy or means to be able to give at certain times of our lives.  Having financial struggles can help us develop gratitude.  A parent who gives so much to their children that they don't need to struggle, cripples them.  He was diagnosed with cancer and had to be released from his calling as a bishop.  He served as a scoutmaster for many years and then was called as a bishop again.  He was a much better bishop because of serving as a scoutmaster.  What that calling taught him was to serve and enjoy what you're doing.  The change was within him, not with the calling.  Be happy wherever you are called to serve.  Dump the guilt.  Look for things you can fix and make things better.  Be sorry after a godly manner, to cause you to repent.  Heavenly Father just wants us to change.  That is godly sorrow, not guilt. Godly sorrow doesn't damage us, it helps us make a difference in our lives.  The sorrow of the world works death.  This is guilt that does not give us any hope.  This is from the adversary. When we make mistakes, make changes, don't beat yourself up.  If you don't feel peace, realize where that guilt comes from. Huh B. Brown said, "This  gospel is primarily the gospel of second chance, the gospel of repentance.  Do not insist upon remembering what God is willing to forget.  Everyone of us has made mistakes but though we must pay the full price, our mistakes should be remembered only as guides to better lives in the future."  We can learn from mistakes, our own and those of others.  Develop qualities of peace. Put off the natural man.  He'll keep coming back, so we need to keep putting him off. Become humble, patient, full of love, and be willing to submit to all things which the Lord sees fit to inflict upon us.  Why would He inflict things upon us?  To help us learn. The Lord wants us to be happy.  He will do His part if we will do our part.  Sin brings sorrow, heartache, and disappointment.  Only the good life will bring us joy.  Did you ever think of your weaknesses as a gift?  The Lord has given us weaknesses so we may be humble.  He makes weak things become strong. Think of your biggest weakness.  If we humble ourselves and have faith in Jesus Christ, He will make weak things become strong.  How would you feel f the weakness you just thought of was a strength?  Would you feel great relief?  Peace?  Would it build your confidence to overcome that weakness?  We need more faith, including faith in ourselves that we can do what is expected of us. Th Holy Ghost can teach us things that we cannot teach one another.  Never forget that. The Lord calls clueless people to do callings.  And then once we are in the calling long enough to be good we're released and another clueless person is called to do our calling, and we're called to a new calling that we're clueless about. This is how we learn.  Learn to delegate so you don't feel over burdened. The adversary will tell us we have to d everything right now.  But we will continue learning even beyond the grave.  Parable of the Dock.  When he was a bishop they called a spiritual living teacher who was a busy mother of five children.  She was being called to replace Sister Spiritual who was 75 years old and had lots of time to put into the calling.  This new sister felt like she was a failure in her calling because she didn't have time to make refrigerator magnets for all the sisters for each lesson.  It would take 8-10 hours to make them.  Sister Spiritual always made refrigerator magnets each week.  He reminded her of other things she could do each week for those 8-10 hours, which would be a higher priority than making refrigerator magnets.  At her time in life, she had other things more important to invest her time in. Remember when you were a child and you'd play in the lake and jump off the dock.  It was hard to pull yourself up onto he dock.  You try to push your friend up onto the dock and the more you push the faster you go down. We can be active in the church but inactive in the gospel.  If we're trying to push somebody up onto the dock, we need to first put ourselves on solid ground and then pull them up.  If we're trying to help someone else in the gospel, we need to first put ourselves on solid ground by praying and studying the scriptures. Put things in order by putting God in the center of our life.   Practice gratitude. When afflictions come, step away from feeling overwhelmed and step toward gratitude.  The Lore will ease our burdens, so that we cannot feel them upon our backs.  To have our burdens lifted, we need to turn them over to God and allow Him to be part of our lives.  Be positive and think of what great things are occurring as the Lord brings to pass His eternal purposes. He was at a busy time in his life when he was diagnosed with cancer.  He was 38 years old and life was good.  It was not in his planner to have cancer.  He fell to his knees.  His 6 children were 18 months o 15 years old.  He looked at his baby and wondered who would love him like he id.  He wanted to savor every moment with his children.  He could not find peace.  He told his wife to marry again, but make sure he was over 70.  He opened his scriptures to Moroni where it talked about how if you have faith, your problems can be resolved.  He then felt that instead of having a cancer problem he had a faith problem.  He went to the temple the next day.  After having cancer surgery, he woke up feeling peace.  He rejoiced in having another day.

LEARNING TO LIVE WITH ADVERSITY--WISDOM FOR MAINTAINING A JOYFUL LIFE (S. MICHAEL WILCOX): God will take whatever challenges we have in our lives and consecrate them for our good. While Joseph Smith was in Liberty Jail, he wrote what sounded like accusatory verses asking God where He was, but then he was prepared to receive God's counsel.  The Lord told him his adversity and afflictions will be but a small moment and then if he endured them well, he would be exalted on high. Trials in our lives can come from other people, or from nature, or from things the adversary brings deliberately into our lives as we give in to temptations.  Even if all three of these combine against you, you'll gain experience and it will be for your good. Even Jesus, the most perfect ma who ever lived, had bad things happen to Him, so how can we expect that bad things won't happen to us?  Tribulations work patience and patience works experience. It develops character. All these things will develop and refine our character. God will cause us to forget all our negatives and make our negatives positives.  We're told that we need to endure well, not just endure.  It's not enough to endure with grumbling and complaining. Whatever reason we fear or weep or grieve, we can know that one day we will be able to say "It is finished."  And it will be finished.  God will wipe away all ears from our eyes.  There will be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. No more pain.  Former things will pass away. Mary Magdalene was weeping at the tomb of Jesus.  She saw Jesus but thought he was the gardener.  He asked her why she wept.  She told Him she wanted to know where they had taken away her Lord's body.  He then says, "Mary" in such a way that she recognized Him. In this moment, it is the end her grief and the beginning of her joy.  Our moment will also come. He has great sorrow over the death of his wife.  But he knows that the day will come when that grief will end and he'll have great joy at being with his wife again. It will be finished.  The misery will be over. In the last moment's of Jesus' freedom, He knows Judas will betray Him. He is pained by this.  He knows Peter will deny Him three times.  This brings Him sadness.  He knows He will be scourged and crucified.  He asked His three apostles to watch with Him, but they fall asleep. He goes to pray with all these things weighing on Him.  He needs comfort, but He turns outward to comfort others.  He tells His disciples to be not troubled, He will go and prepare a place for them. Jesus gained strength by focusing outside Himself. If you're depressed and don't feel like doing anything, you need to act--do something!  If you're trying to help a depressed person, give them something to do.  Remind yourself of all that God has done for you. Instead of worrying about all the bad things that have happened to you, think about all the good things. You don't need to suffer twice, once in reality and once in retrospect.  Don't allow yourself to linger in the valley of sorrow.  Linger is the key word here.  You might find yourself in sorrow, but you don't need to linger there.  It is better for us to PASS THROUGH sorrow.  We don't stay there, we pass through.  It will end.  Get out and do something.  Act!  Think of the widow who had only a little meal and oil to make a last meal for her and her son.  The prophet asked her to make a cake for him.  What she had was multiplied so she had enough.  When we go to the Lord for help because we don't have sufficient for what we need, He asks us what we have to bring to the solution of the problem. Then He takes the little that we have and multiplies it so that it is enough. This was the same principle in the multiplying of the five loaves and a few fish to feed the 5,000. We need to put to use the little we have and allow the Lord to multiply it. Sometimes you'll see two people with similar circumstances but only one gets the blessings.  One has their prayers answered but the other doesn't seem to. Why?  Does God love one more than the other?  When you get the blessings, be grateful, but don't make any comparisons with other people.  And when you don't, be trusting and don't make comparisons with other people. He'll make it good in the end. That's the way life works.  May the Lord bless you in your adversities.

MAKING SENSE OF SORROW AND SUFFERING (ROBERT L. GLEAVE):  When you're wrestling with difficult life issues, quick and easy answers just aren't adequate.  We're dealing with real people with real names and real faces.  He sees a parade of people who went through his office and their pain is not insignificant.  And your pain is not insignificant.  And those who you know have pain that matters.  It matters in a way that we ought to treat it with respect.  When we encounter pain in ourselves or other people, the answers aren't always quick or easy.  What does the church teach us is our highest priority in this life (that which we should pursue at the expense of all else, if necessary)? What is the goal of this life.  Then say so that.... We need to find joy.  Gain eternal life in the highest degree of the Celestial Kingdom, return to live with our Father in Heaven.  No one else is more interested in our own salvation than we are ourselves.  Nor should they be.  How do we best pursue our own best interest?  Service.  Take care of yourself.  If you don't have joy you can't teach others to have joy.  Sacrifice, service, commandments, charity.  Our highest priority should be our own exaltation. If you believe that God is all knowing, all powerful, and all loving, how do we explain evil in the world?  Does He not know about it, isn't powerful enough to stop it, or doesn't care?  We need to go through experiences to learn. Even Jesus had to go through painful experiences. God doesn't cause evil, but allows it. We want quick responses to our pain, yet there may be important gifts to be bestowed by a delayed response. Imagine in the world before this one when we lived with Heavenly Father. He could communicate His love to us perfectly, profoundly, in a way we couldn't argue with. How do you feel alone?  How do you feel afraid? He gave us a veil to cover our minds and we lost our ability to communicate thought for thought, with nothing but a lineal language to communicate with other people.  This is a fabulous gift.  Now we can learn about feeling alone and afraid. It may be that this mortal existence is the only flash of eternity where we are allowed to have a veil over our minds, and allowed to experience things we could not experience any other way. Pain and sorrow might not be deficits to be overcome, but rather gifts from the Father to develop a divine nature. Rather than run from trouble, we can turn and embrace it. Heavenly Father doesn't leave us in this miserable condition all the time. We have moments when the veil can thin and we feel a little of what it must have felt like before. We can feel this way in the temple.  But then life gets hard again. We feel like we're in the darkest abyss. We demonstrate our deep affection for others by the degree to which we suffer for them. Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friend. We grow through suffering. When some people go through difficult things, they can become bitter, while others become softened. Put things into perspective.  There are people in the third world whose problems we have no understanding of.  If we're worried about the paint pealing off our car, that's a first world problem.  There are people in the world who would love to have any kind of car, and gas to put into it, and have places to go and things to do. Sometimes we can remind ourselves "That's a first world problem" to help us put things into perspective.  Only those who resist temptation know how strong it is.  When you get to the end of it you can go, "That's it?  That's your best shot?"  Pain is the same way.  You'll get to the end of it. Gratitude turns what we have into enough and more. God asks us to be thankful for all things. The root of joy is gratefulness.

WHISPERS FROM HEAVEN (BARBARA BARRINGTON JONES): When you make people laugh, they become teachable.  A woman told her doctor her memory was failing her.  He asked when she noticed it and she replied, "When did I notice what?"  Everyone has a photographic memory.  Some just don't have any more film left.  She looked for an exercise video for women her age, but they haven't made one yet called "Buns of putty."  The great thing about being senile is that you can hide your own Easter eggs.  Her memory is not as sharp as it used to be and also her memory is not as sharp as it used to be.  How do you prevent sagging?  Just eat until all the wrinkles fill out.  You don't stop laughing because you grow old.  You grow old because you stop laughing.  Sometimes we wonder why certain things were in the cards for us.  We see ourselves on a long trip, traveling by train.  We see scenes outside the window, but think of our final destination.  When we get there, our lives will fit like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle.  We wait and wait for the station. A young woman couldn't wait until she got out of high school.  Then she couldn't wait to go to college.  Then she couldn't wait to go on a mission.  And when she got on her mission she couldn't wait to come home.  When she got home, she couldn't wait to find a husband.  After she found him she thought if she could just get a house she'd bet happy.  They got the house.  Then if she could just have children, she'd be happy.  After three children, if she could just get those kids in school, then she'd be happy.  And so it goes.  We wait and wait and wait for the station out there when we can finally be happy.  Look back at the stations in your life.  When she was in the 6th grade she was already her adult height of 5'10".  She was all legs.  Little boys would run around down by her ankles.  She felt like if one more of those little boys asked her how the weather was up there she would tell him it was raining and spit on his head.  Then she got into ballet.  But she wasn't popular in high school.  People made unkind comments and she cried her eyes out. She decided to go to New York and become a star ballerina. Her friend told her she'd have trouble finding a ballet company who would provide her with a 4-4 instead of a 2-2 and find four guys to hoist her up. But she went to New York anyway and got accepted into a ballet company. She decided that she needed to lose weight so she quit eating.  She burned lots of calories with her ballet.  She got so thin and so sick that she had to go home.  She was a very talented dancer. She couldn't understand why she got so sick and had to go home.  She'd been praying and saying her novenas.  She was Catholic at that time.  Then she married her boyfriend's best friend.  As a young bride she found her husband on the bathroom floor where he'd taken lots of pills and she had to have him taken to the hospital.  He burned up all her pictures of her ballet days.  She was in a ballet one time when her son was a year old and during the performance her husband motioned her to come quickly because there was an emergency.  She thought something had happened to her son so she ran off stage and out to her husband's car.  He put tape over her mouth, hands, and ankles and drove her out where he held a gun at her and threatened to shoot off her legs so she'd never dance again.  She prayed and prayed and her husband uncocked the gun and drove her back to the parking lot and dumped her out.  A security guard untaped her.  She went to her mother's house, but her husband found her and went after her with a rifle. She prayed again and was able to escape.   She was a Catholic and didn't believe in divorce so she went back into that bad marriage. Her husband pulled a gun on her again and said he was going to kill her and then kill himself.  She again prayed. Her husband put the gun down and went outside where he took his own life.  She showed a picture of herself with her husband and their two children.  She said to look at them they looked like a happy family, but those last five years were just pure fear.  After her husband killed himself, she was left to raise two children alone.  She wanted to be a dancer and now that dream was shattered. Then she met a wonderful man who became her husband for 30 years.  He was 26 years older than she was.  He was the most wonderful, supportive man you could imagine. She went back to dancing.  She started teaching sacred dance for Catholics.  Her children called her new husband dad.  She went to mass every day.  The priest was reading from the gospel, about Peter walking on the water.  She'd never read that story before. She was deathly afraid of water. She could feel for Peter and was so afraid.  But then she felt a hand on her wrist.  It must have been the Savior who pulled up her Spirit and said, "Oh ye of little faith.  Why did you doubt me?"  She didn't know what happened to her.  She felt like she had been through the water and had been rescued.  Then after many years her husband said he wanted to find a different church instead of the Catholic Church.  So she started going to a Protestant Church that taught Jesus loves you.  Then they went on a vacation and passed through Salt Lake City.  He wanted to stop on Temple Square.  He said to look at it like a historical landmark.  She thought it was weird.  There were no statues or candles.  For years she'd been praying "Who are you Jesus?"  Then she watched a movie at the visitor's center on Temple square that showed Jesus saying "Here I am.  Come follow me." She gained a testimony and joined the LDS Church.  Little did she know on that day back in 1979 that there was a plan for her life and she would become a speaker for the LDS church. She has been at Education Week for 30 years now.  Her husband passed away and it was very hard.  It's still hard.  It gets very lonely.  She does have a cat.  She looks back at her life and wonders why she had to go through the abuse of her first husband and why she couldn't just be a ballet dancer.  You have to be all in and be willing to put everything on the line.  Everything in your life goes to working for your good, but you have to be all in.  What does it mean to be all in?  You can talk all in or be all in.  It's about being the best you can be.  It's about sacrificing what you thought it would be and discovering the true you.  Don't talk all in, be all in.  Don't just start the race.  It's never too late.  You give everything you've got to win.  She showed a video of a man who finished a marathon long after everybody else finished, but kept going even though he was struggling with his last breath.  He gave it all he had to finish the race.  God gave us gifts and talents so that we would be all in and give it everything we've got.  We need to trust Him to accomplish what we need to do, even if it's struggling across the finish line.

Rather than take notes on the general devotional yesterday, I'll include a link to a Deseret News article recapping it.  Here it is:

Daily Thoughts

In the Book of Mormon we read Nephi's explanation of the river of water his father saw in his dream. He said it represented filthiness and that it separated the wicked from the tree of life and also from the saints f God. He said it represented the awful hell which is prepared for the wicked.   1 Nephi 15:26-29 "And they said unto me: What meaneth the river of water which our father saw?  And I said unto them that the water which my father saw was filthiness; and so much was his mind swallowed up in other things that he beheld not the filthiness of the water.  And I said unto them that it was an awful gulf, which separated the wicked from the tree of life, and also from the saints of God. And I said unto them that it was a representation of that awful hell, which the angel said unto me was prepared for the wicked."

In the Old Testament we read that Moses and Aaron blessed the people and the glory of the Lord appeared to all of them.  Fire came out from the Lord and consumed the burnt offerings on the altar.  The people shouted and fell on their faces.  Leviticus 9:23-24 "And Moses and Aaron went into the tabernacle of the congregation, and came out, and blessed the people: and the glory of the Lord appeared unto all the people.  And there came a fire out from before the Lord, and consumed upon the altar the burnt offering and the fat: which when all the people saw, they shouted, and fell on their faces."

A verse with a thought booklet tells us that there is no fear in love, and perfect love casts out fear.  The story is told of a lady trying to train her 3 month old puppy to walk on a leash.  As they walked down the sreet, a plastic grocery bag was blowing in the breeze toward them.  The puppy barked and growled at this "monster" coming at him but it continued to come anyway and blew right on him, covering all four pounds of him.  When she lifted the bag off, she found him shivering in fear.  She scooped him up into her arms, comforting him the way our Heavenly father comforts us when we are afraid or feel threatened by a real or imagined enemy.  God's love quiets our fears and gives us confidence to continue on.  1 John 4:18 "There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love."

BYU Education Week Notes -- Tuesday

LEARNING TO FIND PEACE IN THE LORD WHEN THE TEMPESTS OF LIFE ARE RAGING (RYAN K. EGGETT): My soul delighteth in the song of the heart and it shall be answered with a blessing upon their heads.  Emma Smith was given an assignment to compile hymns for the first hymnbook of the church.  That took five years. W.W. Phelps assisted Emma in doing this.  He wrote 26 or 27 hymns himself. The first hymnbook just had words, no music.  The people knew the tunes. The Saints in England weren't familiar with a lot of the tunes in the hymnbook so came up with their own, the Manchester hymnbook.  When many of them immigrated to Utah people carried both hymnbooks to church to sing some from both.  Then additional hymnbooks were published and people were taking 5 hymnbooks to church. Finally they were consolidated into one, with an additional one for the children.  The 1948 hymnbook had many songs for choirs and were in a key that was difficult for many people to sing.  When the present hymnbook was published, most of the choir numbers were taken out. A recent convert to the church found himself stranded in South Africa with a broken down scooter.  He remembered D&C 25:12 "For my soul delighteth in the song of the heart, yea, the song of the righteous is a prayer unto me, and it shall be answered with a blessing upon their heads." So he started singing, and his scooter started up again.  He kept singing and his scooter kept going.  If you need a blessing, sing the hymns.  He taught this in a family home evening the night before his wife had a root canal and she told him the next day that she sang hymns in her mind the whole time she was having the root canal and it went very well.  Hymns can bring us a spirit of peace, give us courage, inspire love and unity among family members, comfort us, move us to righteous action, fill our souls with heavenly thoughts, help us withstand the temptations of the adversary, move us to greater spirituality.  If you'll sing a song of the righteous, you'll be blessed. Many carry heavy burdens.  Some have lost a loved one to death or care for one who is disabled.  Some have been wounded by divorce.  Others years for an eternal marriage.  Some are caught in the grip of additions.  Many are heavy laden.  The Savior healed every sickness and every disease among the people.  He healed them all, including those whose sicknesses were emotional, mental, or spiritual.  There are three types of wounds or sicknesses.  1.  Wounds we cause ourselves.  2.  Wounds caused by other. 3.  Wounds that are part of our mortal existence   The curate of Blagdon had been travelling along the road near the cliffs when a storm struck and he dashed into a cave for shelter.  He wrote "Rock of Ages" in there. The Rock of Ages is Jesus, who died for us. When we wound ourselves, the Savior invites us to come and hide our sins in Him.  How Gentle God's Commands.  The man who wrote this was the 20th of 20 children.  His mother died when he was 8 and his father died when he was 12.  He was made a ward of the state.  He carried great burdens, but wrote about casting your burdens on the Lord and trusting in His constant care.  Why should the anxious load press down your weary mind?  Come Unto Jesus. Orson Pratt Huish wrote this.  Come unto Jesus, ye heavy laden.  Careworn and fainting by sin oppressed. God's love will find you, even if you've done stupid things. Pray even when you don't feel like it.  Why is it so hard to accept that the Lord really wants to help us?  Suppose you have a child and warn them not to play with a knife, but they play with it anyway and cut themselves.  Wouldn't you put a band-aide and ointment on it and try to help them?  If cleaning was requires, wouldn't you do it, even if it strings a little?  Master the Tempest is Raging. Mary Ann Baker was left an orphan and pulled together with her brother and sister.  Then her brother dies.  She felt like God did not care for her.  But the Master's own voice stilled the tempest in her heart and brought her a calm of a deeper faith and more perfect trust.  Different temperatures and times cause different properties in metals.  A missionary got sick and had to be sent home, and wondered why God allowed that to happen. Why does the Lord put metal in fire?  It purifies it. Once it's purified, it can be shaped into the type of tool you want.  Sometimes the Lord cleanses and shapes us.  Tempering makes metal hard.  You need to temper it just enough so it makes it tough but not brittle.  The Lord knows just how much to temper us. And it may be for a different temperature and a different amount of time than someone else.  We trust that He knows what He's doing.

ONENESS IN MARRIAGE (RICHARD B. MILLER): When was a newlywed he and his wife were asked to teach a marriage class at church.  He found out that when it came to marriage, everyone had an opinion.  His primary source of information is the prophets, supplemented by research, which agrees with the prophets. Be one and if ye are not one ye are not mine. Unity is strength. Unity is power. A husband and wife who are yoked together are strong and powerful. Just like there should be unity in the church, there should also be unity in our families. We need to be of one accord, one mind.  We need to be on the same page.  Be united in all things. Have the same goals. There should not be contention with each other. Oneness does not mean to be identical.  It means to be in harmony. Football players play as one on a team, but they aren't all quarterbacks.  An orchestra plays together but they have different instruments, different notes, but they work together in a harmonious way. When people are in distressed relationships, their health often suffers.  Kids in homes with parents who fight are more likely to get into trouble. When couples who don't get along well together, it hurts them, it hurts their kids, it hurts their productivity at work. You can't cleave unto you leave.  You need to separate yourself from your parents and start your life as a couple.  Our loyalty should shift. Determine that there will never be anything that will come between you that will disrupt your marriage.  Be fiercely loyal one to another. Your married life should become independent from your parents.  Whose voice do you listen to?  If you're buying a new car, don't listen to what your father thinks and ignore what your wife thinks. Well meaning relatives have broken up many homes. Live your own life. Say positive things about your spouse. Many young adults demand to be treated like adults and resent their parents being involved in their lives.  But the parents want to treat them like adults and wish they would act like adults.  They keep wanting to borrow money or expect their parents to bail them out of difficulties.

CONTENTION--HOW TO ELIMINATE IT (S. DEE BARRETT): We've all probably embraced contention at one time of our life or another. We need to identify contention in order to control it.  3 Nephi chapter 11 starting with verse 23. It talks about baptism and contention.  All three names of the Godhead are mentioned. They are one and there should be no disputations among you. We have made covenants not to have contention among us, so the Lord empowers us to avoid contention. Every Sunday when you renew your baptismal covenants as you partake of the sacrament, you can be empowered to overcome contention. Helaman 3:1-3 helps you understand what contention is.  There was no contention save it were a little pride.  So pride and contention are associated. Pride is contention. Enmity is placing something between two things. Enmity is the central feature of pride. Ephesians 2:12-15.  What is the wall of partition between us?  Who tears down the middle wall of partition? Suppose your spouse wants to use the car and you tell them they need to have the car back by 5:00 so you can attend a very important meeting.  5:00 comes and they're not back.  Now this person that you love becomes a source of bad feelings for us. We start placing something between us. We build walls. About 5:15 your spouse walks in. You're going to be late. Do we lecture them, give them the silent treatment?  We have opportunities every day to build or tear down walls. 4 Nephi talks about no contention in the land, because of the love of God which dwelt in the hearts of the people. Contention happens when we pull away our hearts and get bugged by what he other person is saying. Satan is the father of contention. For contention to take place, we have to pull away the love of God, which allows the spirit of contention to come into the room. One time they went out to dinner with a couple who had just had a fight and the spirit o contention was there the whole evening.  It was awful!  It was miserable for all of them.  The spirit of contention can be contagious. You can be in a contentious situation at work and bring that home with you. Once we're in a contentious mood you're just looking for someone to be contentious with. We may not be perfect in this, but we can become quicker to get rid of it.  We have moments every day when people do things to us, intentionally or unintentionally, but they bug s.  We make a choice--are we going to allow something to come between us and other people? Problem size. Everybody has issues. When you're on the freeway, how many cars do you pass without even notice them?  But you do notice the accidents that are off the side of the road.  We notice the people who are having the problems.  There are issues with contention, there are just issues, and then there are issues with problem solving skills. When you have an issue with contention, it makes it huge and almost unsolvable.  Just plain an issue is medium size.  But if you use problem solving skills on it, it becomes small.  Contention over a period of time leads to hatred.  Most o the issues that upset us we're embarrassed to tell people what we're upset about. Recognize how often you pull your heart away. Get a card and every time you pull your heart away, write it down.  Keeping track is the key.  For the next couple of days, or the next week, keep track of them.  Unless you are so proud to b upset with somebody, more than likely we should not be upset. What is the antidote?  Gratitude.  Moroni 10:3-5.  It's hard to pull your heart away from somebody when you're grateful for them.  Can one moment ruin a whole day? It can if we allow it to. A high school tripped, fell, and her dress flew up over her head. Imagine how embarrassing this would be and she could be humiliated.  But instead she turned to her friend and said, "Well, if this doesn't get me a date, nothing will" and they both laughed.  Attitude made the difference. One little moment can either be a source of continued embarrassment or a source of laughter.  Gratitude is not just a polite thing to do, it is a commandment.  It is a saving principle.  The Lord's wrath is kindled against those who don't confess His hand in all things. It's hard to pull a heart away when we're full of gratitude.  Remember the previous example of your spouse coming home at 5:15.  What if they were late because they were buying you a new car?  There would be a different way to loo at things.  When you leave the contention out of it, it makes it solvable. Think to thank.  A few people are natural gifted at showing gratitude.  But we can develop this marvelous spiritual gift and be a blessing to any group that we associate with.  When gratitude is absent, rebellion often comes to fill the vacuum. Satan will stir us up to contention that he can harden our hearts against that which is good. When we have contention, we harden the hearts of those around us against anything that is good. One time he was assigned as a home teacher to a family where the kids rebelled and got in trouble with the law.  He asked the bishop what he could do to help that family and the bishop told him that if he could get the father to get rid of the contention in their home, they would be just fine.  A home where there is contention hardens the hearts of the people in he family. We have a choice to make when things happen, to take offense or not.  When two people both choose to take offense the situation can escalate. While in the grocery store he saw a couple the knew where the husband and wife were bth shopping with separate carts and the husband accidentally bumped his cart on his wife's cart.  She got mad and slammed her cart into his and they were yelling at each other in the store. His 12 year old son said he didn't think that couple had handled things very well and asked him what they should have done differently.  He told him he'd show him.  Then he on purpose rammed his grocery cart into his wife's cart.  She smiled and said, "Excuse me" and went on her way.  She has the gift of choosing not to allow something to come between them.  His wife's attitude has resulted in them getting along well with each other. Good prayers are when we take enough time to thank the Lord that we start to feel gratitude toward Him and all the hardness of our hearts starts to break away.  When we do that and get up from our prayers, we will find that we love our family.  When our heart is soft, we can be a good husband and a good father.  If we can just keep the telestial hardness out of our hearts.  what a powerful gift, the gift of gratitude and appreciation.  Murmuring is contagious  We need to work on preventing contention and if it does happen to resolve it quickly.

INFLUENCING A CHANGE OF HEART WITHOUT THE USE OF CRITICISM (JOHN G. BYTHEWAY): It's difficult asking for a change of heart for someone else. We all have our agency.  God will force no one to heaven.  We know what we have to do to get a change of heart, but how do we order that for someone else? You can't.  Even Jesus, with His gifts of love and teaching and healing, could not convince everybody. One woman said most of her problems in life she either married or gave birth to.  He recently visited the Liberty Jail and asked the guide where their bathroom was.  The jailer would lower a bucket from the ceiling.  There was no privacy.  D&C 121 was written in that place.  We help others by persuasion, long suffering, meekness, and by love unfeigned  Who changes hearts?  The Lord changes hearts.   You need to acknowledge that you can't do this by yourself.  You need God.  Why do people change? No one can change someone who is not willing to change.  People don't change people. People change themselves or they're changed by the Holy Ghost. One of the biggest problems is the inability to forgive.  Also lack of showing love and lack of priesthood leadership. The objective of people who criticize is to change the person criticized.  But it is more likely to kill the desire to change than to to produce change.  We have to stop criticizing  stop holding grudges.  We have to let go of that stuff so the spirit can come. Kathryn Hepburn said that if you want to trade the admiration of many men for the criticism of one, get married.  It should not be that way.  Criticism does not work. In our actions, we are either serving God or serving the devil.  When we're serving the devil, we fight, contend, and are critical.  Love one another and serve one another. The definition of insanity is to keep doing the same thing but expect a different result.  What about constructive criticism?  There is no such thing.  Criticism does not come from above. Correction is different from criticism.  Corrections are to be performed when moved upon by the Holy Ghost.  Criticism is more judgmental and is not motivated by the Holy Ghost.  The primary reason we're commanded to avoid criticism is to preserve our own spiritual well-being, not to protect the person whom we would criticize  What if everybody believed in being honest, true, chaste, and benevolent?  This happened in 4 Nephi.  There was no contention in the land because of the love of God. You won't find communication skills in the topical guide of the scriptures.  But you will find kindness and humility. Pride is manifest in fault finding, gossiping, withholding praise that might lift another, being unforgiving and jealous. Christlike attributes and selflessness change marriages. Couples whose marriages are in trouble usually are not praying or studying the scriptures. You don't criticize people into change.  Stop holding onto grudges.  Invite the spirit into your home.

MEET PEOPLE WHERE THEY ARE: UNDERSTANDING AND ACCEPTING DIFFERENCES IN PEOPLE (STEVEN EASTMOND): Pick which person is difficult. Patient #1 Male with mild dementia, left side paralysis, requires 2 person assist for ADL's, staff reports he makes lewd comments to them without responding to redirection.  No one wants to work with him.  Patient #2. Male stroke survivor, also half paralyzed and some dementia as well.  Requires 2 person assist.  Occasionally inappropriate, but easily redirected.  Actually patient #1 and patient #2 were the same person.  He was moved to another facility because the first facility could not manage him.  What is a difficult person?  There is no such thing as a difficult person.  It's the behaviors that are difficult, not the person. Then why do I know some difficult people?  People are only difficult to the extent that we have not yet developed the skills or tried the interventions needed to deal with the behaviors they bring to the table.  We need to learn how to deal with the behaviors. The more you practice it, the better you get at it. That which we persist in doing becomes easier for us to do. Jesus came to us.  He didn't JUST tell us to come where He is.  We need to meet people where they are. The more difficult people are, the more they try to drive people away. The Lord will not leave us comfortless.  You won't know where people are until you find out where they are. Go to that person. Really talk to them.  Ask them questions.  Don't make it about you.  Make it about them.  Don't lecture them.  Do not judge.  If you consider them difficult then chances are you will not see things the same way they do.  Plan for that. The hardest people to love are those who do things that hurt us.  We need to love our enemies. If someone compels us to go with him a mile, go with him two miles. Learn a new way to think. Reach out to people who drive us up the wall.  When we reach out to them, things change. Some difficult people are people who have a problem but don't think they have a problem. Sometimes we need to be direct and clear, but we still need to show love. Don't judge me because I sin differently than you. Judge no.  What's their secret? What don't you know about this person? Before you act, get more information.   Suppose you see a well dressed woman with a briefcase running at breakneck speed, and there a scraggly looking man running behind her.  Do you think she's running away from a man who is trying to attack her so you intervene and stop the man?  But suppose you find out the briefcase belongs to the man and she's a well dressed thief.  That changes things.  But then suppose there is a dog foaming at the mouth running behind both of them, and you find out they are independent of each other and both running from a rabid animal.  but before you intervene with the dog you find out there is a film crew behind him and they're trying to make a movie.  What we see depends mainly on what we look for. Perspective is a point of view based on life experiences.  Personality differences.  Gender differences. He held up a piece of paper and asked everybody what color it was.  We all said orange.  Then he said suppose he said it was blue.  We said he was color blind.  Then he turned the paper around and it was blue on the other side.  He said it was a matter of perspective.  He served a mission in Guatemala where the average income is $5,200 a year, or $100 a week. He saw children having lots of fun playing with a bucket.  Life was very different there and they saw things form a different perspective. A schizophrenic hears voices threatening to kill him.  Imagine how he would feel and the fear that that would bring in. Suppose you go up to someone in church and said, "Good to meet you" and hold your hand out, but he ignores you and won't make eye contact.  His father would do that.  But people didn't know he was blind and deaf.  He wasn't purposely ignoring them. Personality differences.  Some people are outgoing and talkative and some are quiet and reserved. Some are fearless where others are cautious.  The standard that we judge other people by is the way we would act in the same situation.  We think other people are off because they don't do it our way.   Gender differences.  Men tend to be literal and women tend to be hinters.  They'll say "That diaper sure smells." and men will hear "Yeah, that diaper sure smells" instead of "Go change that diaper."  When his wife asks, "Are you going to wear that?" he's found that he should not answer "yes" and continue out the door.  Women need to be more direct and men need to stop being so black and white. Men tend to be fixers.  Sometimes women really just need someone to listen to them, not somebody to fix their problem.  But men want to jump in and fix it.  We need to be complimentary and help each other.  Validation is NOT agreeing or disagreeing. Validation is important when you don't see things the way the other person sees it.  You allow the other person to have their opinion and their emotions about the situation.  You are not intimidated or defensive about things people may say to you. You might say, "I don't see things the way you do, but I can understand why you might be mad."  Validation is a valuable tool in dealing with difficult people.  Accepting differences.  Differences are not necessarily wrong.  They're just different.  Is it best to mow your own in stripes, diagonally, or in a gradually decreasing box?  Do you wear watching clothing (stripes and plaids together)?  Is Disneyland fun for you? Different isn't necessarily wrong.  Appearances can be so deceiving, such a poor measure of a person.  Each person has his own beautiful sound, just like instruments in an orchestra.

Daily Thoughts

In the Book of Mormon we read about how Nephi's brothers asked him to explain the meaning of their father's dream.  Nephi told them that the tree in the dream represented the tree of life and that the rod of iron represented the Word of God. He told them that if they would hold fast to it, they would not perish.  He exhorted them with all the energy of his soul that they would give heed to the word of God and always keep the commandments in all things.   1 Nephi 15:21-25 " And it came to pass that they did speak unto me again, saying: What meaneth this thing which our father saw in a dream? What meaneth the tree which he saw?  And I said unto them: It was a representation of the tree of life.  And they said unto me: What meaneth the rod of iron which our father saw, that led to the tree?  And I said unto them that it was the word of God; and whoso would hearken unto the word of God, and would hold fast unto it, they would never perish; neither could the temptations and the fiery darts of the adversary overpower them unto blindness, to lead them away to destruction. Wherefore, I, Nephi, did exhort them to give heed unto the word of the Lord; yea, I did exhort them with all the energies of my soul, and with all the faculty which I possessed, that they would give heed to the word of God and remember to keep his commandments always in all things."

In the Old Testament we read that Aaron made an atonement by sacrifice for himself and all Israel, as commanded by the Lord through Moses.  Leviticus 9:7 "And Moses said unto Aaron, Go unto the altar, and offer thy sin offering, and thy burnt offering, and make an atonement for thyself, and for the people: and offer the offering of the people, and make an atonement for them; as the Lord commanded."

A verse with a thought booklet reminds us that we can wise counsel for our own good and benefit, not to restrict us but that we may live n a right way in undivided devotion to the Lord.  1 Corinthians 7:35 "And this I speak for your own profit; not that I may cast a snare upon you, but for that which is comely, and that ye may attend upon the Lord without distraction."

BYU Education Week Notes -- Monday

ISAIAH 53: ENLARGING OUR UNDERSTANDING AND WITNESS OF JESUS CHRIST AND HIS MORTAL MINISTRY (DAVID A. CHRISTENSEN):  Great are the words of Isaiah.  If our salvation depended on our understanding of Isaiah, how would we fare?  He's taught Isaiah for 25 years and he still doesn't understand all of it.  The atonement of Christ is the least understood of all revealed truths, even though it's the most basic.  All shall know Jesus Christ, from the least to the greatest.  Why should we wait until we're dead or the resurrection?  He taught Isaiah 53 before he went into the temple for three years, and that has made a huge difference.  After being in the temple, he's found out that any man who assumes he knows anything is stupid.  So he comes decked in his stupidity to testify and to help Isaiah testify of Jesus Christ and the reality of the Savior.  We all know basics about Isaiah 53 and we need to amplify that.  Who has believed our report and to whom is the arm of the Lord revealed?  Who believes the report of Adam, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moses, Joseph Smith, Thomas S. Monson?  Who has believed the testimony of the prophets.  This is the testimony of Isaiah.  Turn to Romans 10:11-17.  Paul the Apostle says we can't believe unless we hear.  Faith comes by hearing of the report.  God came down and took upon Himself the form of a man.  This was prophesied by all the prophets since the world began.  The Lord's redemption is the greatest event ever wrought.  He has spent months studying Isaiah 53:1.  The report of all the prophets of the reality of Christ and His eternal sacrifice, the literal resurrection, and the consequences of that.  What about the 15 living prophets, the first presidency and the 12 apostles?  Their report as an apostle would be of the literal resurrection of Jesus Christ.  Jesus chose disciples, apostles to be a special witness of Jesus Christ, particularly of His divinity and His bodily resurrection from the dead.  What is the report of the apostles and prophets?  It is that Jesus is the Christ, that He died, suffered for our sins, and was resurrected.  They are witnesses of the literal resurrection of Christ.  The fundamental principles of our religion are the testimony of the apostles that he died, was buried, and rose again the third day.  All other things which pertain to our religion are appendages to it.  Without this message of Isaiah and all the prophets about Jesus Christ, we have nothing to talk about.  Isaiah had this testimony. He bore witness of Him. Strengthen your faith, cast off your doubt, and nothing can prevent you from coming to God. If the Savior in former days laid His hands on His disciples, why not today?  He is the same yesterday, today, and forever. Who has believed the report of the prophets, including those who walk the earth today?  The witness of the Holy Ghost is sure and absolute.  This unshakable certainly can rest in our soul even though we have not seen the face of the Lord.  But those who have the witness of the Spirit are expected to see, and hear, and touch with the Heavenly Person as did those of old.  Jesus rose from the grave and was the first fruits of the resurrection.  Among the chosen witnesses are the Lord's apostles.  All men shall be saved from the grave.  Thomas S. Monson witnesses with all his heart and the fervency of his soul declares that God lives, Jesus is our Redeemer who died on the cross to atone for our sins, and He became the first fruits of the resurrection.  Because of Him, we all shall rise from the dead. This is the true church of Jesus Christ.  We will, on the day of judgment, stand before the Savior.  It will be a joy to hear the words, "Well done, good and faithful servant."  Our Heavenly Father knows us by name.  Jesus Christ lives.  He loves us.  The atonement of Jesus Christ is real.  Boyd K. Packer said he didn't understand why he was called as an apostle, but he does have that witness.  God lives.  We are His children and He loves us.  The only lasting joy and happiness we will find is by keeping the commandments.  His gift of eternal life requires our repentance.  Jesus is the Christ, our atoning Savior and Redeemer. The resurrection is the pillar of our faith.  We have many living witnesses who can testify of the literal resurrection.  Jesus Christ is not dead.  He lives!  The resurrected Son of God lives!  And He guides the affairs of the church today. He read quotes from all the apostles given in general conferences, testifying of Jesus Christ.  They all bear witness.  Who has believed our report?  He spent the first 50 minutes of class talking about verse 1, then with 5 minutes left he said he would now go on to verse 2.  Jesus was without comeliness or beauty.  He was an ordinary man who looked like everyone else.  He was a man of sorrows, acquainted with grief.  He was rejected in his hometown.  When Jesus saw the grief of Mary and Martha at the death of their brother Lazarus, He wept.  When He came into Jerusalem he mourned for Jerusalem.  He knew what would happen to them.  This Jesus was a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief. He was despised.  This is true.

HELP FOR THOSE DEALING WITH DOUBTS AND QUESTIONS ABOUT THE CHURCH--STUDYING THE WORD OF GOD, LEARNING TRUTH A LITTLE AT A TIME, RECALLING PREVIOUS INSPIRATION (DAVID B. MARSH): Dealing with doubts.  1.  It is okay to experience doubts...but don't let them linger.  2.  Fortify your faith in Jesus Christ.  3.  Seek to resolve doubts through sincere prayer.  4.  increase your knowledge of the truth.  5.  Remember that truth is learned a little at a time.  6.  Doubt your doubts before you doubt your beliefs.  7.  Consult reliable and authoritative sources.  8.  Consider the motives of the source.  9.  Detect half-truths and lack of context.  10.  Neither science nor religion can answer all questions.  Persons with doubts often want to talk about their doubts. Even at its best, the resolution of doubts by discussing doubts cannot take us far.  There is a hazard.  Our understanding of history can change as more facts come out.  You can't base your faith and testimony on logic.  Even flawless argument can prove false. We need to turn our conversation to things of the heart, that changes our spiritual lives.  The only sure way to soften a heart is to get the effects of the atonement of Jesus Christ into a person's life.  Get into faith, feeling the spirit.  As more research and more knowledge becomes available, we may find things are not the way we thought they were.  Dissolving doubts is a gift of the Spirit, so pray for it.  Increase your knowledge of the truth.  Some people don't feel confident in their knowledge of the gospel or their ability to articulate their knowledge.  Sometimes we depend on others to tell us what is true.  Sometimes we can't explain why the church believes the way it does.  These can provide fertile soil for doubts to grow.  We murmur when we don't understanding the dealings of God with His people.  Don't be satisfied with a superficial knowledge of the gospel, which is what you'll get in Sunday School.  No teacher, as good as they may be, has time to take you deep into a subject.  When a person starts doubting, the first things to go are prayer and scripture study.  A non LDS professor who had taught a Mormon History class for many years had a condescending attitude toward them.  But then he actually read the Book of Mormon and was surprised to find that it was all about Jesus Christ.  It puts Jesus Christ front and center.  He concluded that the Mormons are more Christian than many mainstream Christians and that they are obsessed with Christ. The gospel includes all truth.  We need to increase our knowledge of all truth. We need to embrace every truth.  Get truth from wherever you want.  We don't ask people to throw away any good they've got, we only ask them to come and get more good.  We are ready to believe all true principles. The church is not anti intellectual. One truth does not contradict another. Truth, when it is fully understood, is not contradictory.  The day will come when all truth will be encased in one great whole.  We are not asked to blindly follow our leaders. The invitation to trust in the Lord does not relieve us of the responsibility to think and discover truths for ourselves. God is making it possible for us to learn as much as we can learn.  Look at what has happened with communications in the past 30 years.  The Lord is getting us used to an earth that will reveal all things to us.  You do have to be careful.  Some people think that anything you find on the Internet must be true.  Satan seeks to harden the hearts of the people against the Savior.  He wants everyone to turn away from the Lord.  So be careful while you're searching.  There are people who will try to trick you with information.  The first time he read anti Mormon literature he saw that it contained quotes out of context or quotes from unreliable sources.  He has discovered that in every case things are misquoted or quoted out of context.  Every time he has searched things out that he thought sounded weird, there was an answer.  Is it a pattern in the scriptures?  Anybody can find one verse that can justify anything, but is there a pattern?  Do the living prophets and apostles teach it?  If someone is telling you to build an ark for salvation in our day, go see if President Monson is talking about it?  Is it in harmony with current practices and policies of the church?  Does the spirit testify of its truthfulness?  These are four simple questions you can ask yourself, as a test of stuff you read.  Don't be afraid to look at things from the other point of view.  You start to see things from a different light and it helps you understand the other person.  The man who refuses to listen to the arguments against his position either has a weak position or is weak at expressing it. Nothing that cannot stand up to criticism is worth defending.  This church has nothing to hide.  Everything has a reasonable explanation.  Truth is learned a little at a time.  There is a lot to learn in this life.  You can't learn everything in the first day.  Don't be stubborn about new knowledge. Don't let little things get under your skin.  Don't immediately react and spit it out, work on it a little.  A grain of sand irritates an oyster, but they turn it into a pearl.  Don't despise the revelations of God.  Doubts can be dispelled over time. Teach things you know to be true.  Doubt your doubts before you doubt your beliefs.

SCRIPTURAL MIRACLES: PLAN OF SALVATION SYMBOL SEEN THROUGH NEW TESTAMENT MIRACLES (TYLER J. GRIFFIN):Even Jesus found the need to meet the human needs that he had.  John got beheaded--grieving, healing, feeding, praying, walking, saving.  The purpose of Heavenly Father's plan is to become something, not just get somewhere.  Getting home is not the end goal, it is becoming something.  Something happened with the apostles out in the boat--there was a big storm.  They were rowing for all they were worth, but the wind as directly opposing them.  Sometimes we feel like our best efforts to be good are thwarted   Their very finest wasn't very good.  They were toiling upon the water.  It was a stormy sea.  It was during the fourth watch.  They were tired.  Then Jesus came walking to them in the water.  They were sure they were seeing a ghost.  People don't generally walk on the water.  Jesus tells them not to be afraid.  We're afraid of the unknown.  Peter makes the strangest request.  Instead of telling Jesus to come to the boat with them, he asks Jesus to come to Him in the water.  He thinks Peter was inspire to say that.  Peter needs this experience.  It is a shaping opportunity.  Often times the shortest distance between us and the Lord is over a stormy sea.  As Peter made this request and gets out into the water, the other disciples must have been wondering what he was thinking.  Peter would drown unless the Lord saved him. You generally go the direction you're looking.  If he's going toward Jesus he's looking at his target.  But when e saw the wind boisterous, he was looking at the waves and wind.  You generally go the direction you're facing.  So when he looked at the water, it should not shock us that he stars going down.  This is us on the water, not just Peter.  We can liken this to ourselves.  When we'r going through difficult things and take our eye off the Savior, we start to go down.  We need to look to the Savior to keep from getting overwhelmed by what is going on around us.  Oh thou of little faith.  Jesus was not rebuking him, he was shaping him. Peter did not swim back to the boat, he walked back to the boat with Jesus.  When Jesus comes with you, your destination is taken care of.  Figure out how to come to Christ.  His grace will save you in ways you have no control over. Blind man healed on the Sabbath. You have a man who is sitting at the gate of the temple.  He is blind and begging.  Jesus crouches down in front of the blind man. Then the blind man hears Him spit.  What would he be thinking? He spits on the ground and makes clay, which he pushes into the man's eyes.  What would the man be thinking now? This would be highly offensive, but there is no resistance from the blind man.  He sits quietly while some stranger is rubbing spittle clay into his eyes.  There is power in the Savior's hands.  The blind man can feel of the power and he willingly submits.  Jesus tells him to go wash in the pool of Siloam   He will pass multiple pools of water on his way, but it told to go to a pool farther away.  He finally gets there and washes, and he sees.  He is so excited!  He goes right back to where he'd been at the temple begging.  People wonder if it is him.  When he tells them it is, they take him to the Sanhedrin where they question him.  All he knows that a man named Jesus healed him. The blind man starts to see spiritually.Sometimes we have opposition in a variety of ways.  We need to learn and grow from it.  Imagine the blind man and his joy at seeing, but he got kicked out of the synagogue   Jesus sought him out and found him.  He asked him if he believed.  The blind man told Him that he believed and he worshiped Him.  Blind Bartimaeus in Jericho. You can number on one hand the people who Jesus healed.  This man was named. As Jesus went out of Jericho, He had a lot of things on His to do list. But He takes time for individuals.  Bartimaeus sat by the highway begging. Jerusalem is the high and holy city.  You'r going up if you're going to Jerusalem. You're always going down to Jericho. So this is a symbolic setup of heaven and ell.  Going from Jerusalem  to Jericho symbolizes someone coming from heaven and descending down. Now Jesus is leaving Jericho and meets Bartimaeus by the highway begging.  His effort is small compared to the task ahead of him.  This isn't just a story about a blind man.  This tells about our progression through life. The blind man calls out, asking Jesus to have mercy on him. Jesus could have ignored the man and kept walking. He could have told him that he'd be healed in the resurrection so it would be okay.  Or Jesus could have mentally healed him from a distance and kept going.  But there is something about powerful words in the scriptures.  Jesus stood still. Jesus, with so much to do and so much weighing on His soul, He took time to stand still for one man.  Jesus never seems to heal two people in the same way.  He doesn't spit on the ground and put clay in this man's eyes.  Jesus asked that Bartimaeus be brought to Him.  That's what the gospel is all about--coming to Christ Jesus asks the man what he needs and he says he wants to see.  Jesus tells him to go his way, his faith had made him whole. He followed Jesus.  He no longer goes his way, he goes Jesus' way.  Jesus was going to Jerusalem, or to heaven symbolically.  We need to make our path the Lords path.  Triumphal entry.  This is often overlooked at one of Christ's miracles.  It showed divine power.  People recognized Him. Jesus instructed His disciples to find a colt that had never been ridden on and bring it to Him. They put Jess on the young donkey and the further they go, the more people assemble.  They are waving palm branches in front of Him.  They are shouting in loud voices, Oh God save us now!   The the little donkey who has never been ridden is calm as he walks through all this.  The little donkey could not have done that without guidance form the Lord.  When you let Jesus be the pilot or the Master, He takes you where you need to go.  Everything that should be causing you to be breaking down, you can focus on Jesus and go where He ants you to go.  This is a beautiful, beautiful miracle.  When you're feeling overwhelmed like the little donkey, remember to allow Jesus to steer you.  Cleansing the Temple.  Is that a miracle?  If you don't think that's a miracle, the next time BYU plays, go to the stadium and clear out the stadium alone. There were as many people in the temple as would be at BYU.  Jesus goes in with divine power and gets rid of people who are defiling the temple trying to make money. If we let Jesus into our life, He has the ability to cleanse our life. Gethsemane. Look through the lens of the atonement t all of the miracles.  They are all object lessons for THE miracle, the atonement. Don't be afraid to talk about the cross.  Jesus talks about the cross when He talks about the atonement.  He doesn't shy away from talking about the crucifixion.  We put steeples, not crosses on our churches because we focus on the living Christ, pointing upward, instead of the dying Christ on the cross.  But by His stripes we are healed.  Healing Malchus' ear. Judas and a band of men come.  Judas kisses Jesus and the band of men go to take Jesus.  Peter draws a sword and cuts off the ear of Malchus.  Jesus tells Peter to put it away, and then goes over and heals Malchus' ear.  He doesn't scold Malchus. Peter and the lame man. This was a man who 40 years of his life had never walked.  He would have had extreme muscle atrophy.  But Jesus lifted him up and commanded him to walk. Strength came to his feet and ankles. If the man is 40 years old and has been brought to the temple every day to beg, he has likely seen Jesus Jesus many, many, many times.  He has likely seen Jesus heal other people.  He has probably wondered why Jesus didn't heal him.  Jesus would have known this.  Jesus might have felt for this man and knew that He would heal him, but He waited for the right time.  5,000 people now believed because of Peter's healing of this man.  This was all because of the miracle of this one lame ma who couldn't walk for 40 years.  He had to wait a little season, so a great miracle could happen of bringing thousands of people to Christ.

BELIEVING THE LORD WHEN HE SAYS "FEAR NOT" (MAURINE JENSEN PROCTOR): She told about visiting in the middle east where there were men with machine guns all around them.  She thought they were going to shoot them.  Her husband was trying to take pictures ad a truck was coming toward them.  They ran to the car and got out of there.  She's always scared in these types of situations and her husband isn't.  She worries about her children being spiritually and physically safe in this world.  She is prone to nerves. The apostles were on the Sea of Galilee when a great storm arose.  It seems like too small a lake t have a huge storm, but it does.  Christ was asleep in the front of the boat.  They asked him if He didn't care if they perished.  He arose and rebuked the wind and the waves.  He asked them why they were so fearful and why didn't didn't have faith.  Of course you'd be frightened.  She gets afraid on a plane with a little turbulence   Sometimes we call fear stress, anxiety, or being up tight.  Satan wants to make us feel frightened and be worried.  He does everything in his power to suggest terrible scenarios in or mind.  We wonder if people like us.  We fear we won't do well when we try to do things.  Do we have anything to offer?  Will the Lord really help us?  Will I get sick?  Will a loved one get sick? These worries are upon us all the time.  We are not immune life's trials.  Sometimes we think that feeling worried is being responsible.  We fool ourselves into thinking that worrying is a good thing.  Worry is a fiery dart of Satan and it does not come from God.  The Savior left peace to us.  We need to place our trust in Him who created the seas and set their bounds. When we're on the Lord's errand, we can feel calm and safe.  This is a solid strength of being unafraid.  President Hinckley was not worried because he knew that the work was in the Lord's hands so he didn't need to worry about it.  Be not afraid.  It's a commandment that we be not afraid.  There are many things we can put on our checklist of things to do but not being frightened when scary things are around us isn't something you can put on your checklist and just do it.  We can know that the Lord doesn't give any commandment save He prepares the way for us to do what He has commanded us.  If we want to have the Spirit in our life and do what He asks, He will prepare the way for us not to be afraid.  Why is do not fear a commandment? When we're fearful we can't feel the spirit.  When we're fearful we need the spirit the most.  Fear takes over our heart.  Be still and know that He is God.  What is wrong with taking counsel from our fears?  Fear is self absorbing.  When you're afraid, who is on your mind?  You are.  It's a high energy emotion.  When fear is upon us, we're expecting some kind of blow.  We worry.  Have you ever found your power increased by worrying?  That doesn't happen.  Sometimes when we're afraid, we take it out on others.  Fear makes us believe that we should control every detail of our lives and we need to control things. But we can't.  So when we try we get frustrated.  The Lord did not give us the spirit of fear.  When we remember that, we can know it is not from the Lord.  Being fearful is a fundamental misunderstanding of who God is and the relationship we have with Him.  Living with fear suggests that we're not trusting the Lord and remembering that He is guiding our lives and He is not with us.  Just because God is God, they cannot do other than care for us and bless and help us if we'll come to them with lowliness of heart.  They have to.  It's their nature.  God is watchful, He's not careless.  We want to understand what God's nature is.  We don't have to be perfect in order for God to be there for us.  He promises to be there for us.  When there was a storm and the apostles were afraid, Jesus was in the boat with them.  You don't have to be afraid, He is in the boat with you.  You are not alone.  God knows everything.  He is all loving.  You are safe in His hands.  He cares for you personally.  God knows the beginning from the end.  He can protect you always.  He knows all things for you.  Why do we think we need to tackle things alone?  He is with us.  We are not left to our own strength.  Not just for the big things, but for the little things.  The Lord is in our boat with us.  Sometimes people think they don't want to bother the Lord with their problems.  They think he's too busy.  In reality the Lord tells us that He's in our boat.  He wants us to call upon Him.  We cannot feel safe if our security is based on our own resources.  We have limitations.  It is hard for us to truly understand that the Lord is our partner.  We can't see Him so we forget He's our partner.  Sometimes we have moments when we know, but then we forget again.  Sometimes the reason we're fearful is because of something we've said to ourselves.  We don't always have to prove ourselves--to God, to others, that we're always on the line.  We don't have to always believe that we're about to lose something.  Most of the things we worry about never happen.  We have to give up our calling as general manager of the universe.  We have to give up our expectations of what must happen or we will not be happy.  There are certain experiences we need to have.  Sometimes we have to go through difficulties to realize how good God can be.  No matter what happens, God is in the boat with us.  We need to give up our thought that we need to be the superstar of the universe. For the faithful, all things will be made right.  Soon enough.  The Lord will be a refuge in times of trouble. The Lord is trying to bless us and help us, but we need to trust what He is taking us through.  Fear dims our faith and our strength.  When we're prisoners to our fears, He can't work with us.  This is why He tells us to fear not.  He is our God so we don't need to be dismayed.  Things may come that are hard, but remember that He is in the boat with us.  The Lord is here to part the Red Sea for us.  The Lord wants us to know that He is God.  The Lord wants to demonstrate to us that if we'll turn our eyes toward Him, He will be our partner and we have no reason to fear.

FOR GOD HATH NOT GIVEN US THE SPIRIT OF FEAR--OVERCOMING THE NEED FOR WORLDLY APPROVAL (STEPHAN D. TAEGER): His wife is scared of spiders.  But he thinks people, everyday people, are scarier than spiders.  The house is a mess, the kids are all over, and there is a knock on the door.  So everybody scrambles to clean up in a hurry.  Think how much money is spent on hair products.  How much time and effort and money goes into just making sure we look okay?  If we're stopped at a stop light and singing along with the radio and then notice someone stopped next to us is watching, we immediately stop.  What people think of us seems to matter a lot to us. Abinidi teaches that Jesus will be born and Kind Noah would not accept it.  Satan means accuser.  Noah tells Abinidi that they have good reason to kill him. The church did a study to find the No. 1 thing that would keep young people active in the church.  They found the greatest indicator was the belief that one day they would stand accountable before God.  Noah feared that the judgments of God would come upon him.  What would you tell King Noah during that window of time?  You could emphasize his accountability and tell him he would be judged the same way he was judging Abinidi.  You could ask him if he would do this if no one else was there.  The priests with King Noah stirred him up to anger and he was influenced by what they thought of him.  A group of friends are watching TV and something inappropriate comes on the screen.  They all want someone else to change the channel but they don't want to come across as self righteous. Why do we feel this need to be approved of so much?  What can we do about it?  We can have a positive self image.  The more you have to tell yourself something the more you don't believe it.  The more you tell yourself you're awesome, the more you doubt it.  Some people tell themselves they are horrible, but that is not good.  We don't feel the need for something if we already have it. If we didn't have any air in this room, we'd suddenly want it more than anything.  But 10 minutes ago nobody was grateful for the air in the room. If we can help someone feel their worth, they wouldn't feel the need to prove it. Something is worth what someone is willing to pay for it.  If houses surrounding a house in a neighborhood go down in price, that house will go down as well. Any temptation to try to prove your worth to another person is based on a lie.  Your worth was established 2,000 years ago when Jesus died for you.  Remember what the atoning sacrifice means for us. The person who understands this isn't afraid to invite their neighbor to church.  They're free.  They're not afraid to refuse to watch the inappropriate video.  They don't care what other people think.  They are set free.  If a young woman is asked to be a bridesmaid where all the bridesmaids are asked to dress immodestly, she is not afraid to stand up for what she believes and dress differently. Nothing can separate us from the love of God. If God is for us, who can be against us?

THE GIFTS OF AGE: MAKING THE MOST OF WHAT YOU KNOW NOW BUT DIDN'T KNOW THEN (RICHARD M. EYRE):  How many of you would go back to being 25 if you could?  Few raised their hands.  We can moan and groan about getting older, but it's better to rejoice.  Walk out of here being glad you're old!  We're really not that old.  80 is the new 60.  He has tennis friends who are in their 80's and they still play tennis with him.  There were over 30 tennis players who were over 90, several were over 95.  They were wiry little guys.  He congratulated the winner who said that hitting the ball was nothing, it was picking it up that was hard.  It's a new world.  Are we in the autumn of our lives?  That sounds a little fallish.  He prefers Indian summer.  But autumn isn't bad.  It doesn't work quite so well when you know the winter is coming on.  October is a beautiful time.  November is Thanksgiving.  He discovered that the real joy of water skiing isn't trying to do hard cuts, it's enjoying the beauty of what's around you.  All his life he's been trying to find a sport that her wife likes.  She hates sports.  She hates to lose and doesn't want to try anything she won't win.  She's been trying to find some musical instrument he can play.  This summer she found her sport--electric bicycle.  She used to hate the hills but now she just turns a switch and away she goes.  It looks like she's still pedaling.  How do we make the most of what we know now?  If you're in or approaching your 60's you're into the final fourth of your life.  Do you accept this mellow part of your life, or do you fight the calendar with everything you've got?  Do you get a face lift and insist on acting like you're in your 40's and can fool everybody, even yourself.  Do you still try to make memories?  Do you want to slow down the smell the roses or do you enjoy doing things more efficiently   Do you feel lighter or more burdened?  It's not so bad to be going downhill, as long as it's not too steep and we don't go down really fast.  Americans have never honored age.  In Asia, the people you want to hang out with are the old people.  They're the ones that everybody listens to.  Asia is half the world.  In America that isn't so.  But with the baby boomers aging, that is changing. How old do you hope to be when you die?  There are some advantages to planning for a very long life.  Do your best to make it happen.  Once you start thinking like that, you start taking better care of yourself.  Financially it makes you think harder.  Some people don't want to live a long time because they're afraid of being a burden to others.  But you don't know that.  You might be healthy in your 90's or your health might fail when you're 60.  Most of us have much more peace than when we were younger.  The wonderful word "yet" lets us feel like we're in control.  My portfolio really isn't adequate for retirement--yet.  I don't go to church much--yet.  Use yet as a "but."  I'm less than confident in front of an audience  yet I'm totally comfortable one on one.  I really should make more of an effort to stay in touch with old friends, yet I'm pretty good at responding to emails and social media contacts.  Don't mope around.  There are 5 Double R's of Autumn.  Relaxation and rejuvenation.  Reflection and recollection.  Relationships and reconciliation.  Repentance and restitution.  Re-invention and re-creation.  Stop and look at the Tetons.  How long did you stop and look at them with a van full of kids?  Sit during the sacrament and quietly reflect.  If you hear bawling babies, they're not yours and you don't have to worry about them.  Many times relationships are better than in the past.  As we get a little more mature, we lose some of our pride.  It can become easier to apologize  Try to make up for things we've done wrong.  All these things are joyful, not tasks. Find something you've always wanted to do but didn't have time for.  Don't forget the temple.  Older people involved in temple work have a purpose and can still be useful in their older years.  Some old people feel like they might as well go to Sun City and play golf because nobody pays attention to you.  If you want to drop out, you can.  But if you want to be a proactive part of your family, you can.  Your grown children don't want you telling them what to do, but you can counsel with them and offer to be a consultant to them and back them up.  Offer to take a child they're having problems with on a vacation with you.  When George Romney's grandchildren turned 12, he'd take them on a motor home trip--no parents allowed.  Work out a time when you can be with your grandchildren when their parents aren't around. Grandparents can be cheerleaders and build them up.  If you want to help your children financially, do it wisely.  Don't be overburdened trying to be fair.  Treat children according to their needs. You're entitled to inspiration. He's seen people who scrimped and saved all their lives so their children could have an inheritance, and then the kids sat around the lawyer's table fighting over it.  One man told his children that they weren't going to inherit anything.  He was going to put all his money into a foundation and allow them to decide which charities to donate it to.  Once a year he takes each of his grandchildren on a special date--just the two of them.  He takes notes on what they like and different things about each one individually. They're excited to tell him stuff that he writes down. What do you really care about?  What have you always wanted to do?  What could you make a difference at?  One man started helping children read in an elementary school. He was concerned about kids growing up and not reading anything but their tablets.  He is so into helping children read you couldn't tear him away from it.  Another man financially helps children with their piano lessons anonymously.  Then he goes to their concerts and nobody knows who he is. We are blessed people living on the earth at this time, and aging at just the right now.
