In the Old Testament I read that because the people had not hearkened to the Lord, He would bring all the evil upon them that He had prounced against them. He had spoken to them, but they had not heard. He called to them, but they did not answer. Are we listening when the Lord speaks to us? Jer. 35: 17 "Therefore thus saith the Lord God of hosts, the God of Israel; Behold, I will bring upon Judah and upon all the inhabitants of Jerusalem all the evil that I have pronounced against them: because I have spoken unto them, but they have not heard; and I have called unto them, but they have not answered."
In the Book of Mormon I read Moroni's warning that we need to do away with evil so that Satan can have no power upon our hearts and that all men will be persuaded to do good continually and be saved. Ether 8: 26 "Wherefore, I, Moroni, am commanded to write these things that evil may be done away, and that the time may come that Satan may have no power upon the hearts of the children of men, but that they may be persuaded to do good continually, that they may come unto the fountain of all righteousness and be saved."
A verse from a thought booklet talks about how David commited his spirit into the hand of the Lord who redeemed him. Are we likewise willing to commit our spirts unto God? Ps. 31: 5 "Into thine hand I commit my spirit: thou hast redeemed me, O Lord God of truth."
