In the Book of Mormon I read about how Alma commanded the people to have no contentions among them and that they should be united in their faith and knit together in unity and in love towards one another. A single stick can be easily broken, but if you bind together many sticks them become strong and much more difficult to break. The same goes for people when they are knit together in unity and love--they become strong and more difficult to break as they work together as a team. Mosiah 18: 21 "And he commanded them that there should be no contention one with another, but that they should look forward with one eye, having one faith and one baptism, having their hearts knit together in unity and in love one towards another."
In the Old Testament I read about how after Joseph's brothers sold him as a slave, they dipped his coat of many colors in goat's blood and took it to their father so he'd think Joseph had been killed by a wild beast. Of course Jacob was heartbroken at the loss of his favorite son and mourned greatly, even though his other children tried to comfort him. Can you imagine the guilt Joseph's brothers must have felt at this point--seeing their father so distraught when they knew they were the cause of it? Genesis 37:31-36 "And they took Joseph's coat, and killed a kid of the goats, and dipped the coat in the blood; And they sent the coat of many colours, and they brought it to their father; and said, This have we found: know now whether it be thy son's coat or no. And he knew it, and said, It is my son's coat; an evil beast hath devoured him; Joseph is without doubt rent in pieces. And Jacob rent his clothes, and put sackcloth upon his loins, and mourned for his son many days. And all his sons and all his daughters rose up to comfort him; but he refused to be comforted; and he said, For I will go down into the grave unto my son mourning. Thus his father wept for him. And the Midianites sold him into Egypt unto Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh's, and captain of the guard."
A verse with a thought booklet tells us to be wise about what is good, but simple-minded or innocent about what is evil. Romans 16:19 "For your obedience is come abroad unto all men. I am glad therefore on your behalf: but yet I would have you wise unto that which is good, and simple concerning evil."
