In the Book of Mormon we read that Nephi spoke words that are true and that will come to pass. Those who repent will be able to dwell safely and those who are obedient to the commandments and endure to the end will be saved at the last day. 1 Nephi 22:27-31 "And now behold, I, Nephi, say unto you that all these things must come according to the flesh. But, behold, all nations, kindreds, tongues, and people shall dwell safely in the Holy One of Israel if it so be that they will repent. And now I, Nephi, make an end; for I durst not speak further as yet concerning these things. Wherefore, my brethren, I would that ye should consider that the things which have been written upon the plates of brass are true; and they testify that a man must be obedient to the commandments of God. Wherefore, ye need not suppose that I and my father are the only ones that have testified, and also taught them. Wherefore, if ye shall be obedient to the commandments, and endure to the end, ye shall be saved at the last day. And thus it is. Amen."
In the Old Testament we read that the Lord's anger was kindled against Israel for being too fearful and discouraged to go possess the land that He had given them. So the Lord made them wander in the wilderness for 40 years until the men who had not wholly followed Him had died and only Joshua and Caleb, who had remained faithful survived to enter into the promised land. Numbers 32:8-13 "Thus did your fathers, when I sent them from Kadesh-barnea to see the land. For when they went up unto the valley of Eshcol, and saw the land, they discouraged the heart of the children of Israel, that they should not go into the land which the Lord had given them. And the Lord's anger was kindled the same time, and he sware, saying, Surely none of the men that came up out of Egypt, from twenty years old and upward, shall see the land which I sware unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob; because they have not wholly followed me: Save Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenezite, and Joshua the son of Nun: for they have wholly followed the Lord. And the Lord's anger was kindled against Israel, and he made them wander in the wilderness forty years, until all the generation, that had done evil in the sight of the Lord, was consumed."
In some scriptures with a thought booklet we read that whether we live 70 or 80 years we will soon die. So we need to apply our hearts to wisdom during the limited number of days that we have. Our time here on earth is precious and we need to make sure we don't waste it. Psalms 90:10, 12 "The days of our years are threescore years and ten; and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, yet is their strength labour and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away. So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom."
