In the Book of Mormon we read that the Nephites believed the words of the prophets and knew that they would be fulfilled. They knew that Christ would come. They forsook their sins and served God with diligence day and night. They preached the word of God to the robbers in prison and as many of them as would repent and enter into a covenant to no longer murder, they set at liberty. But those who refused to repent and enter into a covenant were condemned and punished according to the law. And thus they put an end to the secret combinations which caused so much wickedness and so many murders. 3 Nephi 5:1-7 "And now behold, there was not a living soul among all the people of the Nephites who did doubt in the least the words of all the holy prophets who had spoken; for they knew that it must needs be that they must be fulfilled. And they knew that it must be expedient that Christ had come, because of the many signs which had been given, according to the words of the prophets; and because of the things which had come to pass already they knew that it must needs be that all things should come to pass according to that which had been spoken. Therefore they did forsake all their sins, and their abominations, and their whoredoms, and did serve God with all diligence day and night. And now it came to pass that when they had taken all the robbers prisoners, insomuch that none did escape who were not slain, they did cast their prisoners into prison, and did cause the word of God to be preached unto them; and as many as would repent of their sins and enter into a covenant that they would murder no more were set at liberty. 5 But as many as there were who did not enter into a covenant, and who did still continue to have those secret murders in their hearts, yea, as many as were found breathing out threatenings against their brethren were condemned and punished according to the law. And thus they did put an end to all those wicked, and secret, and abominable combinations, in the which there was so much wickedness, and so many murders committed. And thus had the twenty and second year passed away, and the twenty and third year also, and the twenty and fourth, and the twenty and fifth; and thus had twenty and five years passed away."
In the Old Testament we read that the Lord commanded the children of Israel not to offer sacrifices to devils or go whoring after them. We should only worship the Lord our God. Leviticus 17:7 "And they shall no more offer their sacrifices unto devils, after whom they have gone a whoring. This shall be a statute for ever unto them throughout their generations."
A verse with a thought booklet reminds us that we have nothing to fear or cause us to feel dismayed; the Lord will help and strengthen us. He will uphold us with His righteous right hand. The story is told of a two-year-old child who would say "I hold you?" when she would want to be picked up and held by her mother. The mother loved the child and was always eager to pick her up and hold her. Our Heavenly Father is likewise a loving parent. The next time we find ourselves stumbling and struggling, we need to remember that God is there beside us waiting to pick us up. Isaiah 41:10 "Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness."
