Daily Thoughts

In the Book of Mormon we read that Mormon made a record of the history of his people, according to the record of Nephi, which was engraven on plates. Mormon was a disciple of Christ who had been called by Him to declare His word among the people, that they might have eternal life. Mormon made a record of his people from the time Lehi left Jerusalem down to his present day. He included in his record events that he had seen with his own eyes, and he knew that his record was true.   3 Nephi 5:8-20 "And there had many things transpired which, in the eyes of some, would be great and marvelous; nevertheless, they cannot all be written in this book; yea, this book cannot contain even a hundredth part of what was done among so many people in the space of twenty and five years;  But behold there are records which do contain all the proceedings of this people; and a shorter but true account was given by Nephi.  Therefore I have made my record of these things according to the record of Nephi, which was engraven on the plates which were called the plates of Nephi.  And behold, I do make the record on plates which I have made with mine own hands.  And behold, I am called Mormon, being called after the land of Mormon, the land in which Alma did establish the church among the people, yea, the first church which was established among them after their transgression.  Behold, I am a disciple of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. I have been called of him to declare his word among his people, that they might have everlasting life.  And it hath become expedient that I, according to the will of God, that the prayers of those who have gone hence, who were the holy ones, should be fulfilled according to their faith, should make a record of these things which have been done—  Yea, a small record of that which hath taken place from the time that Lehi left Jerusalem, even down until the present time.  Therefore I do make my record from the accounts which have been given by those who were before me, until the commencement of my day;  And then I do make a record of the things which I have seen with mine own eyes.  And I know the record which I make to be a just and a true record; nevertheless there are many things which, according to our language, we are not able to write.  And now I make an end of my saying, which is of myself, and proceed to give my account of the things which have been before me. I am Mormon, and a pure descendant of Lehi. I have reason to bless my God and my Savior Jesus Christ, that he brought our fathers out of the land of Jerusalem, (and no one knew it save it were himself and those whom he brought out of that land) and that he hath given me and my people so much knowledge unto the salvation of our souls."

In the Old Testament we read that the children of Israel were not to do the things that the Egyptians did, where they used to live. Nor were they do do the things that were done in the land of Canaan, where the Lord was bringing them.  Instead they were to keep the Lord's commandments and obey His laws.  By doing this, they would life.  We too need to keep the Lord's commandments instead of following the evil practices of those around us.  Leviticus 18:1-5 "And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying, Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, I am the Lord your God.  After the doings of the land of Egypt, wherein ye dwelt, shall ye not do: and after the doings of the land of Canaan, whither I bring you, shall ye not do: neither shall ye walk in their ordinances.  Ye shall do my judgments, and keep mine ordinances, to walk therein: I am the Lord your God.  Ye shall therefore keep my statutes, and my judgments: which if a man do, he shall live in them: I am the Lord."

Some verses with a thought booklet tell us to put on the whole armor of God, and lists the various parts of it. I'd never noticed before, but most of this armor is defensive in nature--all except for the sword which is an offensive weapon.  And the sword is the word of God.  We need every piece of armor to defend ourselves against the fiery darts of the devil, But in order to action fight evil and conquer it, we need the word of God.  How important is it to study the scriptures and know them?  We need them in order to combat evil.  Ephesians 6:10-17 "Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.  Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.  Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;  And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;  Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:"
