Daily Thoughts

In the Book of Mormon we read when we pray, we should not use vain repetitions or think that we'll be heard for our long prayers.  Jesus gave an example of how we should pray.  3 Nephi 13:7-13 "But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen, for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.  Be not ye therefore like unto them, for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of before ye ask him.  After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.  And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.  And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.  For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen."

In the Old Testament we read that after Moses and Eleazar finish taking a count of the people in the plains of Moab near Jerico, the only ones remaining from those who were numbered 40 years earlier at Sinai were Caleb and Joshua.  This was because the Lord had told them that all those who had rebelled against entering the promised land for fear of the inhabitants would die in the wilderness.  Caleb and Joshua had been the only faithful ones who were willing to do as the Lord directed, so they were the only ones to survive the 40 years in the wilderness to be able to enter into the promised land.  Numbers 26:63-65 "These are they that were numbered by Moses and Eleazar the priest, who numbered the children of Israel in the plains of Moab by Jordan near Jericho.  But among these there was not a man of them whom Moses and Aaron the priest numbered, when they numbered the children of Israel in the wilderness of Sinai.  For the Lord had said of them, They shall surely die in the wilderness. And there was not left a man of them, save Caleb the son of Jephunneh, and Joshua the son of Nun."

Some verses with a thought booklet tell us that after Jesus washed the feet of His disciples, He instructed them to likewise serve each other.  He had given an example of service for us to follow.  And he told us that if we do this, we will be happy.  Indeed, a life of unselfish service is a much happier life than that of a person who thinks only of himself.  John 13:12-17 "So after he had washed their feet, and had taken his garments, and was set down again, he said unto them, Know ye what I have done to you?  Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for so I am.  If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another's feet.  For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you.  Verily, verily, I say unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord; neither he that is sent greater than he that sent him.  If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them."
