In the Book of Mormon we read that after the great battle at Cumorah, the Lamanites hunted down the few Nephites who had escaped, until they were all destroyed, including Mormon. Only Moroni, Mormon's son, was left, and he was trying to finish the record his father had been keeping. Imagine what it would be like to be left all alone with no family or friends, and have to hide from enemies who wanted to kill you. Mormon 8:1-6 "Behold I, Moroni, do finish the record of my father, Mormon. Behold, I have but few things to write, which things I have been commanded by my father. And now it came to pass that after the great and tremendous battle at Cumorah, behold, the Nephites who had escaped into the country southward were hunted by the Lamanites, until they were all destroyed. And my father also was killed by them, and I even remain alone to write the sad tale of the destruction of my people. But behold, they are gone, and I fulfil the commandment of my father. And whether they will slay me, I know not. Therefore I will write and hide up the records in the earth; and whither I go it mattereth not. Behold, my father hath made this record, and he hath written the intent thereof. And behold, I would write it also if I had room upon the plates, but I have not; and ore I have none, for I am alone. My father hath been slain in battle, and all my kinsfolk, and I have not friends nor whither to go; and how long the Lord will suffer that I may live I know not. Behold, four hundred years have passed away since the coming of our Lord and Savior."
In the Old Testament we read that when the Israelites learned that the Philistines planned to attack them, they were afraid. They asked Samuel to continue praying that God would save them from the Philistines. So Samuel prayed and gave offerings to the Lord, and the Lord threw the Philistines into such a panic that Israel was able to defeat them. Then there was peace. 1 Samuel 7:7-14 "And when the Philistines heard that the children of Israel were gathered together to Mizpeh, the lords of the Philistines went up against Israel. And when the children of Israel heard it, they were afraid of the Philistines. And the children of Israel said to Samuel, Cease not to cry unto the Lord our God for us, that he will save us out of the hand of the Philistines. And Samuel took a sucking lamb, and offered it for a burnt offering wholly unto the Lord: and Samuel cried unto the Lord for Israel; and the Lord heard him. And as Samuel was offering up the burnt offering, the Philistines drew near to battle against Israel: but the Lord thundered with a great thunder on that day upon the Philistines, and discomfited them; and they were smitten before Israel. And the men of Israel went out of Mizpeh, and pursued the Philistines, and smote them, until they came under Beth-car. Then Samuel took a stone, and set it between Mizpeh and Shen, and called the name of it Eben-ezer, saying, Hitherto hath the Lord helped us. So the Philistines were subdued, and they came no more into the coast of Israel: and the hand of the Lord was against the Philistines all the days of Samuel. And the cities which the Philistines had taken from Israel were restored to Israel, from Ekron even unto Gath; and the coasts thereof did Israel deliver out of the hands of the Philistines. And there was peace between Israel and the Amorites."
Some scriptures with a thought booklet tell us that we need to be humble of mind and think of the needs of others before our own. We need to be unselfish. We can show our concern for others even in small acts, like letting cars in in traffic, opening the door for someone with their arms full, trying to be as quiet as possible when we know someone else is sleeping, or taking time to listen to someone who is troubled. If we live our everyday lives being sensitive to the needs of those around us, it can make a huge difference. And we'll be following Christ's example. Philippians 2: 3-4 "Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves. Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others."
