Daily Thoughts

In the Book of Mormon we read about the great destruction of the people of Nephi.  The hand of the Lord did it, due to their wickedness, and no one was left on the land except Lamanites and robbers. The Three Nephites who tarried remained until the people's wickedness grew too great, but they ministered unto Moroni and his father.   Mormon 8:7-11 "And behold, the Lamanites have hunted my people, the Nephites, down from city to city and from place to place, even until they are no more; and great has been their fall; yea, great and marvelous is the destruction of my people, the Nephites. And behold, it is the hand of the Lord which hath done it. And behold also, the Lamanites are at war one with another; and the whole face of this land is one continual round of murder and bloodshed; and no one knoweth the end of the war.  And now, behold, I say no more concerning them, for there are none save it be the Lamanites and robbers that do exist upon the face of the land.  And there are none that do know the true God save it be the disciples of Jesus, who did tarry in the land until the wickedness of the people was so great that the Lord would not suffer them to remain with the people; and whether they be upon the face of the land no man knoweth.  But behold, my father and I have seen them, and they have ministered unto us."

In the Old Testament we read that the people demanded a king so they could be like other nations.  Samuel warned the people that if they got a king, there would be dire consequences.  But they refused to listen and still demanded a king.  So the Lord told Samuel to give them what they wanted.  Often we're like this.  We pray for something that is not for our good and when we're told it's not what's best for us, we demand it anyway.  Sometimes the Lord gives us what we ask for and we have to learn the hard way.   1 Samuel 8:4-22 "Then all the elders of Israel gathered themselves together, and came to Samuel unto Ramah,  And said unto him, Behold, thou art old, and thy sons walk not in thy ways: now make us a king to judge us like all the nations. But the thing displeased Samuel, when they said, Give us a king to judge us. And Samuel prayed unto the Lord.  And the Lord said unto Samuel, Hearken unto the voice of the people in all that they say unto thee: for they have not rejected thee, but they have rejected me, that I should not reign over them.  According to all the works which they have done since the day that I brought them up out of Egypt even unto this day, wherewith they have forsaken me, and served other gods, so do they also unto thee.  Now therefore hearken unto their voice: howbeit yet protest solemnly unto them, and shew them the manner of the king that shall reign over them. And Samuel told all the words of the Lord unto the people that asked of him a king.  And he said, This will be the manner of the king that shall reign over you: He will take your sons, and appoint them for himself, for his chariots, and to be his horsemen; and some shall run before his chariots. And he will appoint him captains over thousands, and captains over fifties; and will set them to ear his ground, and to reap his harvest, and to make his instruments of war, and instruments of his chariots.  And he will take your daughters to be confectionaries, and to be cooks, and to be bakers.  And he will take your fields, and your vineyards, and your oliveyards, even the best of them, and give them to his servants.  And he will take the tenth of your seed, and of your vineyards, and give to his officers, and to his servants. And he will take your menservants, and your maidservants, and your goodliest young men, and your asses, and put them to his work. He will take the tenth of your sheep: and ye shall be his servants.  And ye shall cry out in that day because of your king which ye shall have chosen you; and the Lord will not hear you in that day. Nevertheless the people refused to obey the voice of Samuel; and they said, Nay; but we will have a king over us;  That we also may be like all the nations; and that our king may judge us, and go out before us, and fight our battles.  And Samuel heard all the words of the people, and he rehearsed them in the ears of the Lord.  And the Lord said to Samuel, Hearken unto their voice, and make them a king. And Samuel said unto the men of Israel, Go ye every man unto his city."

Some verses with a thought booklet tell us that whatever we ask for in prayer, in the name of Jesus Christ, we will receive. Indeed, our prayers are answered. But we need to be sure that we pray for things that are according to the will of God.  Otherwise we He may have to answer our prayers with "no" or even worse, as in the example of our reading in the Old Testament today, we may be given things that we demand even though they're not for our best good. Sometimes the best prayer we could offer is, "Please give me whatever Thou feels is best for me."   John 14:13-14 "And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.  If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it."
