Daily Thoughts

In the Book of Mormon we read that the persecutions inflicted on the church by the unbelievers became so great that the church began to murmur and complain. Mosiah sent a proclamation throughout the land saying that the unbelievers should not persecute the believers. All people should be treated with equality and pride and haughtiness should be done away with. Every man should labor for his own support. Mosiah 27:1-5 "And now it came to pass that the persecutions which were inflicted on the church by the unbelievers became so great that the church began to murmur, and complain to their leaders concerning the matter; and they did complain to Alma. And Alma laid the case before their king, Mosiah. And Mosiah consulted with his priests.  And it came to pass that king Mosiah sent a proclamation throughout the land round about that there should not any unbeliever persecute any of those who belonged to the church of God.  And there was a strict command throughout all the churches that there should be no persecutions among them, that there should be an equality among all men;  That they should let no pride nor haughtiness disturb their peace; that every man should esteem his neighbor as himself, laboring with their own hands for their support.  Yea, and all their priests and teachers should labor with their own hands for their support, in all cases save it were in sickness, or in much want; and doing these things, they did abound in the grace of God."

In the Old Testament we read that in the day of the Lord, all the proud and haughty will be humbled and only the Lord will be exalted.  Isaiah 2:11-12 "The lofty looks of man shall be humbled, and the haughtiness of men shall be bowed down, and the Lord alone shall be exalted in that day.  For the day of the Lord of hosts shall be upon every one that is proud and lofty, and upon every one that is lifted up; and he shall be brought low:"

Some scriptures with a thought booklet tell us that Jesus is the vine and we are the branches.  We cannot bear fruit unless we abide in Him.  If we abide in Him, He will love us and grant unto us what we ask. However, if we don't abide in Him we'll be withered and cast into the fire. Just like branches cannot bear fruit and wither away when they are not attached to the vine, so we can do nothing if were not connected to Christ. He is the giver and sustainer of life and we need t remain in Him to bear fruit for the Kingdom.  John 15:1-9 "I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman.  Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit. Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you.  Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me.  I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing. If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned.  If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you. Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples. As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you: continue ye in my love."

Daily Thoughts

In the Book of Mormon we read that Alma went forth and judged those who had been taken in iniquity according to the word of God. Those willing to repent were numbered among those of the church. But those who would not repent had their names blotted out. Alma went forth teaching the word of God and admonishing all to obey the word of God, pray without ceasing and give thanks in all things.  Mosiah 26:34-39 "And it came to pass that Alma went and judged those that had been taken in iniquity, according to the word of the Lord. And whosoever repented of their sins and did confess them, them he did number among the people of the church;  And those that would not confess their sins and repent of their iniquity, the same were not numbered among the people of the church, and their names were blotted out.  And it came to pass that Alma did regulate all the affairs of the church; and they began again to have peace and to prosper exceedingly in the affairs of the church, walking circumspectly before God, receiving many, and baptizing many.  And now all these things did Alma and his fellow laborers do who were over the church, walking in all diligence, teaching the word of God in all things, suffering all manner of afflictions, being persecuted by all those who did not belong to the church of God.  And they did admonish their brethren; and they were also admonished, every one by the word of God, according to his sins, or to the sins which he had committed, being commanded of God to pray without ceasing, and to give thanks in all things."

In the Old Testament we're commanded to repent of our sins and to do good.  The Lord can make our sins as white as snow, even though they are red. If we are willing and obedient, He will bless us.  But if we rebel and refuse to follow the Lord, we will be devoured.  Isaiah 1:16-20 "Wash you, make you clean; put away the evil of your doings from before mine eyes; cease to do evil;  Learn to do well; seek judgment, relieve the oppressed, judge the fatherless, plead for the widow. Come now, and let us reason together, saith the Lord: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool. If ye be willing and obedient, ye shall eat the good of the land:  But if ye refuse and rebel, ye shall be devoured with the sword: for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it."

A verse with a though booklet reassures us that the Lord will not leave us comfortless, but will come to us. We are never alone when we turn to the Lord.  John 14:18 "I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you."

Daily Thoughts

In the Book of Mormon we read that those who never knew Christ will have to stand before Him.  They will then know that He is their God and Redeemer, but they would not be redeemed. They will then depart into everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels. Those who will not hear the voice of God will not be received by Him at the last day, so they should not be received into His church now. However, those willing to confess their sins and repent with all sincerity should be forgiven. Those willing to repent should be numbered with the people of God.  Mosiah 26:25-33 " And it shall come to pass that when the second trump shall sound then shall they that never knew me come forth and shall stand before me. And then shall they know that I am the Lord their God, that I am their Redeemer; but they would not be redeemed. And then I will confess unto them that I never knew them; and they shall depart into everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels.  Therefore I say unto you, that he that will not hear my voice, the same shall ye not receive into my church, for him I will not receive at the last day. Therefore I say unto you, Go; and whosoever transgresseth against me, him shall ye judge according to the sins which he has committed; and if he confess his sins before thee and me, and repenteth in the sincerity of his heart, him shall ye forgive, and I will forgive him also.  Yea, and as often as my people repent will I forgive them their trespasses against me. And ye shall also forgive one another your trespasses; for verily I say unto you, he that forgiveth not his neighbor's trespasses when he says that he repents, the same hath brought himself under condemnation.  Now I say unto you, Go; and whosoever will not repent of his sins the same shall not be numbered among my people; and this shall be observed from this time forward.  And it came to pass when Alma had heard these words he wrote them down that he might have them, and that he might judge the people of that church according to the commandments of God."

In the Old Testament we read that many waters cannot quench love.  Song of Solomon 8:7 "Many waters cannot quench love, neither can the floods drown it: if a man would give all the substance of his house for love, it would utterly be contemned."

A verse with a thought booklet tells us that Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life, and no man can come unto the Father except by Him.  John 14:6 "Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me."

Daily Thoughts

In the Book of Mormon we read that after Alma poured his whole soul out to God seeking guidance and direction, the Lord commended Alma for having faith, baptizing people, and establishing churches in the land. He said that those willing to bear His name and serve Him would be blessed and receive eternal life. He said that those willing to be baptized unto repentance should be received freely into the churches and they would be forgiven for their sins. If they know Christ, they will have a place eternally at His right hand. Mosiah 26:14-24 "And it came to pass that after he had poured out his whole soul to God, the voice of the Lord came to him, saying:  Blessed art thou, Alma, and blessed are they who were baptized in the waters of Mormon. Thou art blessed because of thy exceeding faith in the words alone of my servant Abinadi.  And blessed are they because of their exceeding faith in the words alone which thou hast spoken unto them.  And blessed art thou because thou hast established a church among this people; and they shall be established, and they shall be my people.  Yea, blessed is this people who are willing to bear my name; for in my name shall they be called; and they are mine. And because thou hast inquired of me concerning the transgressor, thou art blessed.  Thou art my servant; and I covenant with thee that thou shalt have eternal life; and thou shalt serve me and go forth in my name, and shalt gather together my sheep.  And he that will hear my voice shall be my sheep; and him shall ye receive into the church, and him will I also receive.  For behold, this is my church; whosoever is baptized shall be baptized unto repentance. And whomsoever ye receive shall believe in my name; and him will I freely forgive.  For it is I that taketh upon me the sins of the world; for it is I that hath created them; and it is I that granteth unto him that believeth unto the end a place at my right hand.  For behold, in my name are they called; and if they know me they shall come forth, and shall have a place eternally at my right hand."

In the Old Testament we read about winter passing, flowers appearing, and birds singing. What a glorious time of year that is!  Song of Solomon 2:11-12 "For, lo, the winter is past, the rain is over and gone;  The flowers appear on the earth; the time of the singing of birds is come, and the voice of the turtle is heard in our land;"

A verse with a thought booklet tells us to let not our hearts be troubled, but to believe in Heavenly Father and His Son Jesus Christ. Indeed, our faith the them can bring us peace and give us hope in times of trouble, which we all experience. Trouble does not have to have the final word if we trust in the Lord. He offers hope for you troubled heart today.   John 14:1 "Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me."

Daily Thoughts

In the Book of Mormon we read that the unbelievers started out being not half so numerous as the people of God, but because of the dissensions among them, they became more numerous. They deceived many with their flattering words and caused them to sin. They were brought up before Alma, and many people witnesses against them and testified of their iniquity. Alma was very troubled by this and didn't know what to do with them.  He took them before king Mosiah, but Mosiah turned them back over to him. Alma still didn't know what to do with them so he turned to the Lord for direction.  When we're troubled and don't know what to do, we can always turn to the Lord for guidance and direction.  Mosiah 26:5-13 "And now in the reign of Mosiah they were not half so numerous as the people of God; but because of the dissensions among the brethren they became more numerous. For it came to pass that they did deceive many with their flattering words, who were in the church, and did cause them to commit many sins; therefore it became expedient that those who committed sin, that were in the church, should be admonished by the church.  And it came to pass that they were brought before the priests, and delivered up unto the priests by the teachers; and the priests brought them before Alma, who was the high priest.  Now king Mosiah had given Alma the authority over the church. And it came to pass that Alma did not know concerning them; but there were many witnesses against them; yea, the people stood and testified of their iniquity in abundance.  Now there had not any such thing happened before in the church; therefore Alma was troubled in his spirit, and he caused that they should be brought before the king.  And he said unto the king: Behold, here are many whom we have brought before thee, who are accused of their brethren; yea, and they have been taken in divers iniquities. And they do not repent of their iniquities; therefore we have brought them before thee, that thou mayest judge them according to their crimes.  But king Mosiah said unto Alma: Behold, I judge them not; therefore I deliver them into thy hands to be judged.  And now the spirit of Alma was again troubled; and he went and inquired of the Lord what he should do concerning this matter, for he feared that he should do wrong in the sight of God."

In the Old Testament we read that it is our duty to reverence God and keep His commandments.  God will judge us for our works whether they be good or evil. Even the things we do which we try to keep secret will be brought to light.  Ecclesiastes 12:13-14 "Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man. For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil."

Some scriptures with a thought booklet tell us that we're commanded to love one another.  And this is how we can tell a true disciple, or follower, of Christ--they show love for one another. If people were to examine our lives and see how we treat others, would they be able to tell that we are a disciple of Christ?  If not, we need to see what changes we need to make.  John 13:34-35 "A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.  By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another."

Daily Thoughts

In the Book of Mormon we read that there were some who were little children at the time King Benjamin gave his address and did not understand his words. Some of them grew up without the faith of their fathers and they did not believe in Christ or in the resurrection of the dead.  Their hearts were hardened and because of their unbelief they could not understand the word of God. They refused to be baptized or join the church and remained in their sinful state.  Mosiah 26:1-4 "Now it came to pass that there were many of the rising generation that could not understand the words of king Benjamin, being little children at the time he spake unto his people; and they did not believe the tradition of their fathers. They did not believe what had been said concerning the resurrection of the dead, neither did they believe concerning the coming of Christ.  And now because of their unbelief they could not understand the word of God; and their hearts were hardened.  And they would not be baptized; neither would they join the church. And they were a separate people as to their faith, and remained so ever after, even in their carnal and sinful state; for they would not call upon the Lord their God."

In the Old Testament we read that unless a man's soul if filled with good, his riches, wealth, honor and posterity are all vanity.  Ecclesiastes 6:1-12 "There is an evil which I have seen under the sun, and it is common among men:  A man to whom God hath given riches, wealth, and honour, so that he wanteth nothing for his soul of all that he desireth, yet God giveth him not power to eat thereof, but a stranger eateth it: this is vanity, and it is an evil disease. If a man beget an hundred children, and live many years, so that the days of his years be many, and his soul be not filled with good, and also that he have no burial; I say, that an untimely birth is better than he.  For he cometh in with vanity, and departeth in darkness, and his name shall be covered with darkness.  Moreover he hath not seen the sun, nor known any thing: this hath more rest than the other. Yea, though he live a thousand years twice told, yet hath he seen no good: do not all go to one place?  All the labour of man is for his mouth, and yet the appetite is not filled.  For what hath the wise more than the fool? what hath the poor, that knoweth to walk before the living? Better is the sight of the eyes than the wandering of the desire: this is also vanity and vexation of spirit.  That which hath been is named already, and it is known that it is man: neither may he contend with him that is mightier than he. Seeing there be many things that increase vanity, what is man the better?  For who knoweth what is good for man in this life, all the days of his vain life which he spendeth as a shadow? for who can tell a man what shall be after him under the sun?"

Some scriptures with a thought booklet tell us that it's not enough to just express our love in words, we need to show our love by our actions.  If we see our brother in need and turn our backs on him, the love of God is not in us. Love requires sacrifice.  1 John 3:17-18 "But whoso hath this world's good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him? My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth."

Daily Thoughts

In the Book of Mormon we read that Alma baptized those who believed. King Mosiah gave him power to establish churches throughout the land and he ordained priests and teachers over every church. Different churches assembled themselves together and were taught by the priests an teachers according to the teachings of Alma. All the churches taught the same hing--faith in God and repentance. Whoever desired to take Christ's name upon them joined the church and they were the people of God.  The Lord poured out His spirit upon them and they were blessed ad prospered in the land.  Mosiah 25:18-24 "Therefore, Alma did go forth into the water and did baptize them; yea, he did baptize them after the manner he did his brethren in the waters of Mormon; yea, and as many as he did baptize did belong to the church of God; and this because of their belief on the words of Alma.  And it came to pass that king Mosiah granted unto Alma that he might establish churches throughout all the land of Zarahemla; and gave him power to ordain priests and teachers over every church. Now this was done because there were so many people that they could not all be governed by one teacher; neither could they all hear the word of God in one assembly;  Therefore they did assemble themselves together in different bodies, being called churches; every church having their priests and their teachers, and every priest preaching the word according as it was delivered to him by the mouth of Alma.  And thus, notwithstanding there being many churches they were all one church, yea, even the church of God; for there was nothing preached in all the churches except it were repentance and faith in God.  And now there were seven churches in the land of Zarahemla. And it came to pass that whosoever were desirous to take upon them the name of Christ, or of God, they did join the churches of God; And they were called the people of God. And the Lord did pour out his Spirit upon them, and they were blessed, and prospered in the land."

In the Old Testament we read that it is better to have someone with you than to be alone.  If you fall the other person can lift you up.  Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 "Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labour. For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow: but woe to him that is alone when he falleth; for he hath not another to help him up.  Again, if two lie together, then they have heat: but how can one be warm alone? And if one prevail against him, two shall withstand him; and a threefold cord is not quickly broken."

A verse with a thought booklet tells us where every good gift truly comes from--it comes from the Lord.  We have so much to thank our Heavenly Father for!  James 1:17 "Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning."

Daily Thoughts

In the Book of Mormon we read that when Mosiah finished speaking to the people, Alma spoke to them. Alma reminded the people that it was the Lord who had delivered them. After Alma had finished speaking to the people, king Limhi and all his people desired to be baptized.   Mosiah 25:14-17 "And now it came to pass that when Mosiah had made an end of speaking and reading to the people, he desired that Alma should also speak to the people.  And Alma did speak unto them, when they were assembled together in large bodies, and he went from one body to another, preaching unto the people repentance and faith on the Lord.  And he did exhort the people of Limhi and his brethren, all those that had been delivered out of bondage, that they should remember that it was the Lord that did deliver them.  And it came to pass that after Alma had taught the people many things, and had made an end of speaking to them, that king Limhi was desirous that he might be baptized; and all his people were desirous that they might be baptized also."

In the Old Testament we read that there is a time and season for every purpose under heaven.  Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 "To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:  A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted;  A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up;  A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance;  A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;  A time to get, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away;  A time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak; A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace."

Some verse with a thought booklet make it quite clear who is righteous.  Those who keep the commandments and do righteous things are born of God and are righteous.  Those who commit sins, transgress the laws of God, or do not love their brothers are  of the devil. 1 John 3:4-10 "Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law. And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin.  Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him.  Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous.  He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.  Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.  In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother."

Daily Thoughts

In the Book of Mormon we read that the descendants of Mulek at Zarahemla became Nephites.  They learned of the people of Alma and of Zeniff.  Mosiah read the records of both people which caused the people to rejoice at the goodness of God and raise their voices in thanks. They were saddened at the sinful state of the Lananites. Mosiah 25:1-13 "And now king Mosiah caused that all the people should be gathered together.  Now there were not so many of the children of Nephi, or so many of those who were descendants of Nephi, as there were of the people of Zarahemla, who was a descendant of Mulek, and those who came with him into the wilderness.  And there were not so many of the people of Nephi and of the people of Zarahemla as there were of the Lamanites; yea, they were not half so numerous.  And now all the people of Nephi were assembled together, and also all the people of Zarahemla, and they were gathered together in two bodies.  And it came to pass that Mosiah did read, and caused to be read, the records of Zeniff to his people; yea, he read the records of the people of Zeniff, from the time they left the land of Zarahemla until they returned again. And he also read the account of Alma and his brethren, and all their afflictions, from the time they left the land of Zarahemla until the time they returned again.  And now, when Mosiah had made an end of reading the records, his people who tarried in the land were struck with wonder and amazement.  For they knew not what to think; for when they beheld those that had been delivered out of bondage they were filled with exceedingly great joy.  And again, when they thought of their brethren who had been slain by the Lamanites they were filled with sorrow, and even shed many tears of sorrow.  And again, when they thought of the immediate goodness of God, and his power in delivering Alma and his brethren out of the hands of the Lamanites and of bondage, they did raise their voices and give thanks to God.  And again, when they thought upon the Lamanites, who were their brethren, of their sinful and polluted state, they were filled with pain and anguish for the welfare of their souls.  And it came to pass that those who were the children of Amulon and his brethren, who had taken to wife the daughters of the Lamanites, were displeased with the conduct of their fathers, and they would no longer be called by the names of their fathers, therefore they took upon themselves the name of Nephi, that they might be called the children of Nephi and be numbered among those who were called Nephites.  And now all the people of Zarahemla were numbered with the Nephites, and this because the kingdom had been conferred upon none but those who were descendants of Nephi."

In the Old Testament we read that all the riches and wealth that we can accumulate is just vanity and vexation of spirit, and has no real profit.  Money cannot buy happiness.  Ecclesiastes 2:4-11 "I made me great works; I builded me houses; I planted me vineyards:  I made me gardens and orchards, and I planted trees in them of all kind of fruits:  I made me pools of water, to water therewith the wood that bringeth forth trees:  I got me servants and maidens, and had servants born in my house; also I had great possessions of great and small cattle above all that were in Jerusalem before me:  I gathered me also silver and gold, and the peculiar treasure of kings and of the provinces: I gat me men singers and women singers, and the delights of the sons of men, as musical instruments, and that of all sorts.  So I was great, and increased more than all that were before me in Jerusalem: also my wisdom remained with me.  And whatsoever mine eyes desired I kept not from them, I withheld not my heart from any joy; for my heart rejoiced in all my labour: and this was my portion of all my labour.  Then I looked on all the works that my hands had wrought, and on the labour that I had laboured to do: and, behold, all was vanity and vexation of spirit, and there was no profit under the sun."

A verse with a thought booklet tells us that we can trust in God at all times and pour our hearts out to Him.  He is our refuge.  Psalms 62:8 "Trust in him at all times; ye people, pour out your heart before him: God is a refuge for us. Selah."

Daily Thoughts

In the Book of Mormon we read that because of the patience and faith of the people, the Lord delivered them out of the hands of the Lamanites. The Lord caused a deep sleep to come upon the Lamanites so that the people of Alma could escape, with all their flocks. When they were in the wilderness, they gave thanks unto God for answering their prayers--easing their burdens on their backs and safely delivering them from bondage. They were able to find the land of Zarahemla where king Mosiah received them with joy.  Mosiah 24:16-25 " And it came to pass that so great was their faith and their patience that the voice of the Lord came unto them again, saying: Be of good comfort, for on the morrow I will deliver you out of bondage.  And he said unto Alma: Thou shalt go before this people, and I will go with thee and deliver this people out of bondage. Now it came to pass that Alma and his people in the night-time gathered their flocks together, and also of their grain; yea, even all the night-time were they gathering their flocks together.  And in the morning the Lord caused a deep sleep to come upon the Lamanites, yea, and all their task-masters were in a profound sleep.  And Alma and his people departed into the wilderness; and when they had traveled all day they pitched their tents in a valley, and they called the valley Alma, because he led their way in the wilderness. Yea, and in the valley of Alma they poured out their thanks to God because he had been merciful unto them, and eased their burdens, and had delivered them out of bondage; for they were in bondage, and none could deliver them except it were the Lord their God.  And they gave thanks to God, yea, all their men and all their women and all their children that could speak lifted their voices in the praises of their God.  And now the Lord said unto Alma: Haste thee and get thou and this people out of this land, for the Lamanites have awakened and do pursue thee; therefore get thee out of this land, and I will stop the Lamanites in this valley that they come no further in pursuit of this people.  And it came to pass that they departed out of the valley, and took their journey into the wilderness.  And after they had been in the wilderness twelve days they arrived in the land of Zarahemla; and king Mosiah did also receive them with joy."

In the Old Testament we read that a virtuous woman is more valuable than rubies.  Her husband's heart can safely trust in her.  Proverbs 31:10-11 "Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies.  The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil."

A verse with a thought booklet reminds us of the importance of loving one another.  God is love and everyone that loves is born of God and knows God.  1 John 4:7 "Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God."

Daily Thoughts

In the Book of Mormon we read that the Lord did answer the prayers of the people and told them to be comforted because He would deliver them out of bondage. And in the meantime, he would be with them in their afflictions and ease their burdens upon their backs, they they would not be able to feel them. This is the way the Lord sometimes answers our prayers.  He doesn't necessarily take away our burdens right away, but he strengthens us so we can bear them and eases them so we cannot feel them. Like the people of Alma, we need to submit cheerfully and with patience to all the will of the Lord.  Mosiah 24:13-15 "And it came to pass that the voice of the Lord came to them in their afflictions, saying: Lift up your heads and be of good comfort, for I know of the covenant which ye have made unto me; and I will covenant with my people and deliver them out of bondage.  And I will also ease the burdens which are put upon your shoulders, that even you cannot feel them upon your backs, even while you are in bondage; and this will I do that ye may stand as witnesses for me hereafter, and that ye may know of a surety that I, the Lord God, do visit my people in their afflictions.  And now it came to pass that the burdens which were laid upon Alma and his brethren were made light; yea, the Lord did strengthen them that they could bear up their burdens with ease, and they did submit cheerfully and with patience to all the will of the Lord."

In the Old Testament we read that when we have righteous rulers, the people rejoice.  But when we're governed by someone wicked, the people mourn.  It's very important that we carefully choose who we vote for.  Proverbs 29:2 "When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice: but when the wicked beareth rule, the people mourn."

Some scriptures with a thought booklet tell the story of Jesus washing His disciples feet.  Normally this was a job for a servant, but Jesus lovingly wanted to do this service.  At first Peter adamantly refused to have Jesus wash his feet.  But then Jesus told him that unless he was willing to allow this, he would have no part in Him. There are a couple of things we can learn from this.  First, sometimes it's difficult to allow others to serve us.  But it's important that we humble ourselves enough to be served, when necessary.  Secondly, we need to learn, from Jesus' example, that giving acts of service is not "beneath" anyone.  John 13:4-8 "He riseth from supper, and laid aside his garments; and took a towel, and girded himself. After that he poureth water into a basin, and began to wash the disciples' feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded.  Then cometh he to Simon Peter: and Peter saith unto him, Lord, dost thou wash my feet?  Jesus answered and said unto him, What I do thou knowest not now; but thou shalt know hereafter.  Peter saith unto him, Thou shalt never wash my feet. Jesus answered him, If I wash thee not, thou hast no part with me."

Daily thoughts

I write these Daily Thoughts many weeks in advance and noticed this morning that I seem to be off a day in sending them.  Don't know if I missed a day or duplicated a day or what, but I'm sending two days worth today to get them reconciled.

In the Book of Mormon we read that the Lamanites knew nothing of God and no one taught them. They prospered in riches and were wise as to things of the world, but they delighted in wickedness. Mosiah 24:1-7 "And it came to pass that Amulon did gain favor in the eyes of the king of the Lamanites; therefore, the king of the Lamanites granted unto him and his brethren that they should be appointed teachers over his people, yea, even over the people who were in the land of Shemlon, and in the land of Shilom, and in the land of Amulon.  For the Lamanites had taken possession of all these lands; therefore, the king of the Lamanites had appointed kings over all these lands.  And now the name of the king of the Lamanites was Laman, being called after the name of his father; and therefore he was called king Laman. And he was king over a numerous people.  And he appointed teachers of the brethren of Amulon in every land which was possessed by his people; and thus the language of Nephi began to be taught among all the people of the Lamanites.  And they were a people friendly one with another; nevertheless they knew not God; neither did the brethren of Amulon teach them anything concerning the Lord their God, neither the law of Moses; nor did they teach them the words of Abinadi;  But they taught them that they should keep their record, and that they might write one to another.  And thus the Lamanites began to increase in riches, and began to trade one with another and wax great, and began to be a cunning and a wise people, as to the wisdom of the world, yea, a very cunning people, delighting in all manner of wickedness and plunder, except it were among their own brethren."

In the Old Testament we read that just like a fire will go out without wood to burn, so will strife cease if there is no talebearer to fuel the flames of contention.  The words of a talebearer cause deep wounds.  Proverbs 26:21-22 "As coals are to burning coals, and wood to fire; so is a contentious man to kindle strife. The words of a talebearer are as wounds, and they go down into the innermost parts of the belly."

A verse with a thought booklet tells us that a person who hears the Word of God, understands it, and bears fruit is like a seed planted on good soil. When we hear the Word of God, do we allow it to sprout in our souls?  Do we put into practice the things the Lord has told us to do? Do we bring forth fruit by the good that we do? It's not enough to just listen to spiritual ideas such as how to love and serve others, we need to allow these things to grow in our hearts and blossom in our lives.   Matthew 13:23 "But he that received seed into the good ground is he that heareth the word, and understandeth it; which also beareth fruit, and bringeth forth, some an hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty."

In the Book of Mormon we read that Amulon persecuted Alma and his people, putting heavy tasks on them and putting them to death if they prayed. The people stopped praying vocally, but poured out their hearts to God in silent prayer, which God heard. When we're in situations where we cannot pray aloud, we can rest assured that God will hear and answer our silent prayers.  Mosiah  24:8-12 "And now it came to pass that Amulon began to exercise authority over Alma and his brethren, and began to persecute him, and cause that his children should persecute their children.  For Amulon knew Alma, that he had been one of the king's priests, and that it was he that believed the words of Abinadi and was driven out before the king, and therefore he was wroth with him; for he was subject to king Laman, yet he exercised authority over them, and put tasks upon them, and put task-masters over them. 0 And it came to pass that so great were their afflictions that they began to cry mightily to God.  And Amulon commanded them that they should stop their cries; and he put guards over them to watch them, that whosoever should be found calling upon God should be put to death.  And Alma and his people did not raise their voices to the Lord their God, but did pour out their hearts to him; and he did know the thoughts of their hearts."

In the Old Testament we read that the wicked run away even when no one is chasing them, but the righteous are bold as a lion.  When we sin it makes us paranoid and we find ourselves looking over our shoulders.  But the righteous have nothing to fear.  Proverbs 28:1 "The wicked flee when no man pursueth: but the righteous are bold as a lion."

A verse with a thought booklet tells us that eternal life is that we may know the only true God and Jesus Christ whom He has sent. John 17:3 "And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent."

Daily Thoughts

In the Book of Mormon we read that the Lamanites found the priests of Noah in the wilderness.  Amulon, a leader of the priests, pleaded for their lives, and sent their wives to also plead their cause.  Their wives were daughters of the Lamanites. The Lamanites had compassion on them because of their wives. So the priests of Noah joined with the Lamanites.  They found Alma in the wilderness.  They broke their promise to let them go and sent guards around them. Amulen was put as a ruler of the Lamanites, under the king.  Mosiah 23:30-39 "Now the armies of the Lamanites, which had followed after the people of king Limhi, had been lost in the wilderness for many days.  And behold, they had found those priests of king Noah, in a place which they called Amulon; and they had begun to possess the land of Amulon and had begun to till the ground.  Now the name of the leader of those priests was Amulon. And it came to pass that Amulon did plead with the Lamanites; and he also sent forth their wives, who were the daughters of the Lamanites, to plead with their brethren, that they should not destroy their husbands.  And the Lamanites had compassion on Amulon and his brethren, and did not destroy them, because of their wives. And Amulon and his brethren did join the Lamanites, and they were traveling in the wilderness in search of the land of Nephi when they discovered the land of Helam, which was possessed by Alma and his brethren.  And it came to pass that the Lamanites promised unto Alma and his brethren, that if they would show them the way which led to the land of Nephi that they would grant unto them their lives and their liberty.  But after Alma had shown them the way that led to the land of Nephi the Lamanites would not keep their promise; but they set guards round about the land of Helam, over Alma and his brethren.  And the remainder of them went to the land of Nephi; and a part of them returned to the land of Helam, and also brought with them the wives and the children of the guards who had been left in the land. And the king of the Lamanites had granted unto Amulon that he should be a king and a ruler over his people, who were in the land of Helam; nevertheless he should have no power to do anything contrary to the will of the king of the Lamanites."

In the Old Testament we read that having confidence in an unfaithful man during times of trouble is like a broken tooth or a foot out of joint.  Proverbs 25:19 "Confidence in an unfaithful man in time of trouble is like a broken tooth, and a foot out of joint."

But some verses with a thought booklet tell us who we can rely on in times of trouble.  The Lord will lead us beside the still waters and restore our soul.  Picture the Lord leading you by calm water, renewing and strengthening you.  Psalms 23:2-3 "He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.  He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake."

Daily Thoughts

In the Book of Mormon we read that whoever puts his trust in God will be lifted up at the last day.  Even though scary looking Lamanites surrounded the people of Alma, Alma exhorted them not to be afraid because the Lord would deliver them. So they quieted their fears and prayed to the Lord. The Lord softened the hearts of the Lamanites and Alma and his brethren delivered themselves up into their hands. Mosiah 23:22-29 "Nevertheless—whosoever putteth his trust in him the same shall be lifted up at the last day. Yea, and thus it was with this people.  For behold, I will show unto you that they were brought into bondage, and none could deliver them but the Lord their God, yea, even the God of Abraham and Isaac and of Jacob.  And it came to pass that he did deliver them, and he did show forth his mighty power unto them, and great were their rejoicings.  For behold, it came to pass that while they were in the land of Helam, yea, in the city of Helam, while tilling the land round about, behold an army of the Lamanites was in the borders of the land.  Now it came to pass that the brethren of Alma fled from their fields, and gathered themselves together in the city of Helam; and they were much frightened because of the appearance of the Lamanites.  But Alma went forth and stood among them, and exhorted them that they should not be frightened, but that they should remember the Lord their God and he would deliver them. Therefore they hushed their fears, and began to cry unto the Lord that he would soften the hearts of the Lamanites, that they would spare them, and their wives, and their children.  And it came to pass that the Lord did soften the hearts of the Lamanites. And Alma and his brethren went forth and delivered themselves up into their hands; and the Lamanites took possession of the land of Helam."

In the Old Testament we read that someone giving wise reproof to an obedient ear is as valuable as gold.  Proverbs 25:12 "As an earring of gold, and an ornament of fine gold, so is a wise reprover upon an obedient ear."

Some scriptures with a thought booklet are very comforting to read in times of trouble.  No matter what is happening around us, we have no reason to fear.  God is our refuge and our strength.  He will help us and be there for us. We need to be still and know that He is God.  Psalms 46:1-11 "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea;  Though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof. Selah. There is a river, the streams whereof shall make glad the city of God, the holy place of the tabernacles of the most High.  God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved: God shall help her, and that right early.  The heathen raged, the kingdoms were moved: he uttered his voice, the earth melted. The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah. Come, behold the works of the Lord, what desolations he hath made in the earth.  He maketh wars to cease unto the end of the earth; he breaketh the bow, and cutteth the spear in sunder; he burneth the chariot in the fire.  Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth. The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah."

Daily Thoughts

In the Book of Mormon we read that Alma told the people that they had been in bondage to King Noah and his priests, but had been made free by the Lord. He told them to stand fast in the liberty they'd been given and trust no man to become their king or minister unless he be a man of God who kept the commandments. Alma taught the people to love each other and have no contention among them. Just men were consecrated to be priests and teachers among them. They watched over the people and nourished them. The people became prosperous but the Lord chastened them as He tried their patience and faith.  Mosiah 23: 12-21 "And now I say unto you, ye have been oppressed by king Noah, and have been in bondage to him and his priests, and have been brought into iniquity by them; therefore ye were bound with the bands of iniquity.  And now as ye have been delivered by the power of God out of these bonds; yea, even out of the hands of king Noah and his people, and also from the bonds of iniquity, even so I desire that ye should stand fast in this liberty wherewith ye have been made free, and that ye trust no man to be a king over you.  And also trust no one to be your teacher nor your minister, except he be a man of God, walking in his ways and keeping his commandments.  Thus did Alma teach his people, that every man should love his neighbor as himself, that there should be no contention among them.  And now, Alma was their high priest, he being the founder of their church.  And it came to pass that none received authority to preach or to teach except it were by him from God. Therefore he consecrated all their priests and all their teachers; and none were consecrated except they were just men. Therefore they did watch over their people, and did nourish them with things pertaining to righteousness.  And it came to pass that they began to prosper exceedingly in the land; and they called the land Helam.  And it came to pass that they did multiply and prosper exceedingly in the land of Helam; and they built a city, which they called the city of Helam. Nevertheless the Lord seeth fit to chasten his people; yea, he trieth their patience and their faith."

In the Old Testament we read that it is better to dwell in the wilderness than with a contentious and angry woman.  Contention drives the Spirit away, and makes it difficult to be happy.  Proverbs 21:19 "It is better to dwell in the wilderness, than with a contentious and an angry woman."

Some verses with a thought booklet tell us that even though it's possible that our earthly parents might forget us, God will never forget us nor forsake us.  He has engraven us upon the palms of His hands.  So when we're feeling alone and forgotten by other people, we can be comforted in knowing that we'll never be forgotten by God.  Isaiah 49:13-18 "Sing, O heavens; and be joyful, O earth; and break forth into singing, O mountains: for the Lord hath comforted his people, and will have mercy upon his afflicted.  But Zion said, The Lord hath forsaken me, and my Lord hath forgotten me.  Can a woman forget her sucking child, that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb? yea, they may forget, yet will I not forget thee.  Behold, I have graven thee upon the palms of my hands; thy walls are continually before me.  Thy children shall make haste; thy destroyers and they that made thee waste shall go forth of thee. Lift up thine eyes round about, and behold: all these gather themselves together, and come to thee. As I live, saith the Lord, thou shalt surely clothe thee with them all, as with an ornament, and bind them on thee, as a bride doeth."

Daily Thoughts

In the Book of Mormon we read that the people wanted Alma to be their king, but he refused, saying it wasn't expedient that they should have a king. A wicked king can bring to pass much wickedness. Alma recounted how he himself had been guilty of doing things he should not have done, but after much tribulation, the Lord had heard his prayers and allowed him to be an instrument in His hands to bring others to a knowledge of the truth.  Mosiah 23: 6-11 "And the people were desirous that Alma should be their king, for he was beloved by his people.  But he said unto them: Behold, it is not expedient that we should have a king; for thus saith the Lord: Ye shall not esteem one flesh above another, or one man shall not think himself above another; therefore I say unto you it is not expedient that ye should have a king. Nevertheless, if it were possible that ye could always have just men to be your kings it would be well for you to have a king. But remember the iniquity of king Noah and his priests; and I myself was caught in a snare, and did many things which were abominable in the sight of the Lord, which caused me sore repentance;  Nevertheless, after much tribulation, the Lord did hear my cries, and did answer my prayers, and has made me an instrument in his hands in bringing so many of you to a knowledge of his truth. Nevertheless, in this I do not glory, for I am unworthy to glory of myself."

In the Old Testament it tells us that a fool meddles, but an honorable man will cease from strife.  Proverbs 20:3 "It is an honour for a man to cease from strife: but every fool will be meddling."

A verse with a thought booklet says that God commanded the light to shine out of darkness and has shined in our hearts to give the light and knowledge of the glory of God.  Do we allow God's light to shine through us, to brighten a darkened world?  2 Corinthians 4:6 "For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ."

Daily Thoughts

In the Book of Mormon we read an account of Alma and his people who were driven into the wilderness by King Noah. The Lord had warned Alma to flee into the wilderness and the Lord strengthened them so they could escape from King Noah. They pitched their tents in a pleasant land and began to till the ground and build buildings.  Mosiah 23:1-5 "Now Alma, having been warned of the Lord that the armies of king Noah would come upon them, and having made it known to his people, therefore they gathered together their flocks, and took of their grain, and departed into the wilderness before the armies of king Noah.  And the Lord did strengthen them, that the people of king Noah could not overtake them to destroy them. And they fled eight days' journey into the wilderness. And they came to a land, yea, even a very beautiful and pleasant land, a land of pure water. And they pitched their tents, and began to till the ground, and began to build buildings; yea, they were industrious, and did labor exceedingly."

In the Old Testament we read about the importance of the words we speak.  The words of a foolish man will bring on contention and fighting, perhaps even coming to blows.  They cause destruction and can be a snare to the soul.  The words of a talebearer cause deep wounds.  We need to be very careful of the words we speak and make sure they don't cause harm or stir up strife. Proverbs 18:6-8 "A fool's lips enter into contention, and his mouth calleth for strokes.  A fool's mouth is his destruction, and his lips are the snare of his soul. The words of a talebearer are as wounds, and they go down into the innermost parts of the belly."

A scripture with a thought booklet shows us how Heavenly Father refers to Jesus.  He introduces Him as His Beloved Son and affirms that He is pleased with Him.  Do we follow this example when speaking of our children?  Do we take every opportunity to let them and everyone else know that we love them and are pleased with them?  Mark 1:11 "And there came a voice from heaven, saying, Thou art my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased."

Daily Thoughts

In the Book of Mormon we read that Limhi listened to Gideon's advice and the people were able to sneak out of the city while the guards were drunk.  They were able to travel to Zarahemla and join Mosiah's people there who rejoiced to receive them, and their records.  Mosiah 22:9-16 "And it came to pass that the king hearkened unto the words of Gideon.  And king Limhi caused that his people should gather their flocks together; and he sent the tribute of wine to the Lamanites; and he also sent more wine, as a present unto them; and they did drink freely of the wine which king Limhi did send unto them.  And it came to pass that the people of king Limhi did depart by night into the wilderness with their flocks and their herds, and they went round about the land of Shilom in the wilderness, and bent their course towards the land of Zarahemla, being led by Ammon and his brethren.  And they had taken all their gold, and silver, and their precious things, which they could carry, and also their provisions with them, into the wilderness; and they pursued their journey.  And after being many days in the wilderness they arrived in the land of Zarahemla, and joined Mosiah's people, and became his subjects.  And it came to pass that Mosiah received them with joy; and he also received their records, and also the records which had been found by the people of Limhi.  And now it came to pass when the Lamanites had found that the people of Limhi had departed out of the land by night, that they sent an army into the wilderness to pursue them;  And after they had pursued them two days, they could no longer follow their tracks; therefore they were lost in the wilderness."

In the Old Testament we read that even a fool, when he holds his peace, is counted as wise.  It's important to know when to keep quiet.  Proverbs 17:28 "Even a fool, when he holdeth his peace, is counted wise: and he that shutteth his lips is esteemed a man of understanding."

A verse with a thought booklet tells us that the Lord knows our longings and even our groanings are not hidden from Him.  He sees and understands what we're going through, even when it may not be apparent to us.  Sometimes we may feel like our prayers are going unheard, but that is not the case.  The story is told of a young mother whose 5 year old son woke up very early before dawn and wanted to be taken to the park to play.  She knew that he had not gotten enough sleep and would be tired and cranky if he didn't go back to sleep.  So she put him back in bed, in spite of his crying and a big temper tantrum.  She stood outside his room listening to every single one of his heartbreaking cries until he finally settled down and went back to sleep.  His mother knew what was best for him, even if he himself did not.  This is similar to our Heavenly Father who stands listening to all our anguished cries, but acts in our best interests even when we ourselves don't know what they are.  Psalms 38:9 "Lord, all my desire is before thee; and my groaning is not hid from thee."

Daily Thoughts

In the Book of Mormon we read that Limhi consulted with the people on how they could deliver themselves from bondage. The Lamanites were too numerous to do battle with hem, so they decided that all they could do was escape into the wilderness to get away from them. Gideon suggested that they give wine to the guards by the back wall to make them drunk so the people could sneak out by night.   Mosiah 22:1-8 "And now it came to pass that Ammon and king Limhi began to consult with the people how they should deliver themselves out of bondage; and even they did cause that all the people should gather themselves together; and this they did that they might have the voice of the people concerning the matter. And it came to pass that they could find no way to deliver themselves out of bondage, except it were to take their women and children, and their flocks, and their herds, and their tents, and depart into the wilderness; for the Lamanites being so numerous, it was impossible for the people of Limhi to contend with them, thinking to deliver themselves out of bondage by the sword.  Now it came to pass that Gideon went forth and stood before the king, and said unto him: Now O king, thou hast hitherto hearkened unto my words many times when we have been contending with our brethren, the Lamanites.  And now O king, if thou hast not found me to be an unprofitable servant, or if thou hast hitherto listened to my words in any degree, and they have been of service to thee, even so I desire that thou wouldst listen to my words at this time, and I will be thy servant and deliver this people out of bondage.  And the king granted unto him that he might speak. And Gideon said unto him: Behold the back pass, through the back wall, on the back side of the city. The Lamanites, or the guards of the Lamanites, by night are drunken; therefore let us send a proclamation among all this people that they gather together their flocks and herds, that they may drive them into the wilderness by night.  And I will go according to thy command and pay the last tribute of wine to the Lamanites, and they will be drunken; and we will pass through the secret pass on the left of their camp when they are drunken and asleep. Thus we will depart with our women and our children, our flocks, and our herds into the wilderness; and we will travel around the land of Shilom."

In the Old Testament we're told that having a merry heart and a cheerful attitude is actually healthy for us physically.  Happiness can actually benefit our health, whereas having a broken spirit can be detrimental.  Proverbs 17:22 "A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones."

A verse with a thought booklet goes right along with this, telling us to rejoice always in the Lord.  Rejoice!  It will help us not only mentally and spiritually, but physically as well.  Philippians 4:4 "Rejoice in the Lord alway: and again I say, Rejoice."

Daily Thoughts

In the Book of Mormon we read that Ammon sorrowed because so many of his brethren had been slain, and also because Noah and his priests had caused the people to commit so many sins against God. He also mourned the death of Abinidi and that Alma and his followers had had to flee. They wished they could join them, since they had now entered into a covenant with God o keep His commandments and serve Him. They desired to be baptized, but there was no one authorized to baptize them at that time.   Mosiah 21:29-36 "Yet Ammon and his brethren were filled with sorrow because so many of their brethren had been slain;  And also that king Noah and his priests had caused the people to commit so many sins and iniquities against God; and they also did mourn for the death of Abinadi; and also for the departure of Alma and the people that went with him, who had formed a church of God through the strength and power of God, and faith on the words which had been spoken by Abinadi.  Yea, they did mourn for their departure, for they knew not whither they had fled. Now they would have gladly joined with them, for they themselves had entered into a covenant with God to serve him and keep his commandments. And now since the coming of Ammon, king Limhi had also entered into a covenant with God, and also many of his people, to serve him and keep his commandments. And it came to pass that king Limhi and many of his people were desirous to be baptized; but there was none in the land that had authority from God. And Ammon declined doing this thing, considering himself an unworthy servant.  Therefore they did not at that time form themselves into a church, waiting upon the Spirit of the Lord. Now they were desirous to become even as Alma and his brethren, who had fled into the wilderness.  They were desirous to be baptized as a witness and a testimony that they were willing to serve God with all their hearts; nevertheless they did prolong the time; and an account of their baptism shall be given hereafter. And now all the study of Ammon and his people, and king Limhi and his people, was to deliver themselves out of the hands of the Lamanites and from bondage."

In the Old Testament we read that being slow to anger is better than being mighty.  And it is more important to rule your own spirit than to take a whole city.  Proverbs 16:32 "He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty; and he that ruleth his spirit than he that taketh a city."

A scripture with a thought booklet tells us that if we have faith, nothing is impossible, even moving mountains.  This doesn't necessarily mean moving literal mountains (although if there was a purpose for it, the Lord could make that happen), but it can also mean anything that is an obstacle to us or can seem like a mountain in our way.  When we focus on God--not on the mountain--God will empower us to do whatever we need to do.  Matthew 17:20 "And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you."

Daily Thoughts

In the Book of Mormon we read that Ammon and his brothers were taken and cast into prison because they were mistaken for the priests who had taken the daughters of the Lamanites.  But when it was discovered that they were their brethren sent from Zarahelma, it caused great joy. Limhi had previously been unsuccessful in finding the land of Zarahelma, but had stumbled instead on a land with many dry bones. They had brought back a record of those people. Limhi ejoiced that Ammon had a gift from God to interpret.  Mosiah 21:23-28 "And the king having been without the gates of the city with his guard, discovered Ammon and his brethren; and supposing them to be priests of Noah therefore he caused that they should be taken, and bound, and cast into prison. And had they been the priests of Noah he would have caused that they should be put to death.  But when he found that they were not, but that they were his brethren, and had come from the land of Zarahemla, he was filled with exceedingly great joy.  Now king Limhi had sent, previous to the coming of Ammon, a small number of men to search for the land of Zarahemla; but they could not find it, and they were lost in the wilderness.  Nevertheless, they did find a land which had been peopled; yea, a land which was covered with dry bones; yea, a land which had been peopled and which had been destroyed; and they, having supposed it to be the land of Zarahemla, returned to the land of Nephi, having arrived in the borders of the land not many days before the coming of Ammon.  And they brought a record with them, even a record of the people whose bones they had found; and it was engraven on plates of ore.  And now Limhi was again filled with joy on learning from the mouth of Ammon that king Mosiah had a gift from God, whereby he could interpret such engravings; yea, and Ammon also did rejoice."

In the Old Testament we read the dangers of having pride--it will lead to destruction and cause us to fall.  Proverbs 16:18 "Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall."

A verse with a thought booklet reminds us that if we'll draw near to the Lord, He'll draw near to us.  We just need to cleanse our hands, purify our hearts, and repent of our sins.  James 4:8 "Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded."

Daily Thoughts

In the Book of Mormon we read that Limhi didn't dare go outside the city without guards for fear that he'd fall into the hands of the Lamanites. He also caused his people to watch for the priests who had carried off the daughters of the Lamanites and who had causes so many problems for them, including carrying off their grain and precious things. There were no more disturbances between the Lamanites and the people of Limhi at that time.  Mosiah 21: 18-22 "Now the people of Limhi kept together in a body as much as it was possible, and secured their grain and their flocks;  And the king himself did not trust his person without the walls of the city, unless he took his guards with him, fearing that he might by some means fall into the hands of the Lamanites.  And he caused that his people should watch the land round about, that by some means they might take those priests that fled into the wilderness, who had stolen the daughters of the Lamanites, and that had caused such a great destruction to come upon them.  For they were desirous to take them that they might punish them; for they had come into the land of Nephi by night, and carried off their grain and many of their precious things; therefore they laid wait for them.  And it came to pass that there was no more disturbance between the Lamanites and the people of Limhi, even until the time that Ammon and his brethren came into the land."

In the Old Testament we read that the Lord is far from the wicked, but He hears the prayers of the righteous.  Proverbs 15:29 "The Lord is far from the wicked: but he heareth the prayer of the righteous."

A verse with a thought booklet tells us that God's mercy endures forever and He provides food for every creature. If He'll take care of every creature, we can certainly trust Him to care for us.  Psalms 136:25 "Who giveth food to all flesh: for his mercy endureth for ever."

Daily Thoughts

In the Book of Mormon we read that the people began to prosper by degrees and did not suffer with hunger. Because many men had died in battle, there were many widows. King Limhi commanded that these widows be supported and helped. It's important to help those in need and give generously.  Mosiah 21:16-17 "And it came to pass that they began to prosper by degrees in the land, and began to raise grain more abundantly, and flocks, and herds, that they did not suffer with hunger. Now there was a great number of women, more than there was of men; therefore king Limhi commanded that every man should impart to the support of the widows and their children, that they might not perish with hunger; and this they did because of the greatness of their number that had been slain."

In the Old Testament we're told that when we show mercy to the poor, we honor our Maker.  But if we oppress the poor, we show reproach for God.  How we treat the poor is a reflection on how we feel about God.  Proverbs 14:31 "He that oppresseth the poor reproacheth his Maker: but he that honoureth him hath mercy on the poor."

In some verses with a thought booklet we're given a reminder of how much we're valued in the sight of God.  Five sparrows might be sold for two farthings, but not one of them is forgotten by God.  But we are worth more than many sparrows and God even knows the number of the hairs on our heads. Next time we're feeling worthless, we need to remember how important we are to God and how much He loves us as His children.  Luke 12:6-7 "Are not five sparrows sold for two farthings, and not one of them is forgotten before God?  But even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not therefore: ye are of more value than many sparrows."

Daily Thoughts

In the Book of Mormon we read that after the Nephites had been defeated three times, they humbled themselves before the Lord and cried unto Him. The Lord was slow to hear their cried because of their iniquities, but he did hear hear them and began to soften the hearts of the Lamanites that they began to ease their burdens.  However, the Lord at that time did not see fit to deliver them from bondage.  Sometimes this is the way the Lord works--he does not remove our burdens right away, but eases them.  He comforts us and helps us bear them.  Mosiah 21: 13-15 "And they did humble themselves even to the dust, subjecting themselves to the yoke of bondage, submitting themselves to be smitten, and to be driven to and fro, and burdened, according to the desires of their enemies.  And they did humble themselves even in the depths of humility; and they did cry mightily to God; yea, even all the day long did they cry unto their God that he would deliver them out of their afflictions.  And now the Lord was slow to hear their cry because of their iniquities; nevertheless the Lord did hear their cries, and began to soften the hearts of the Lamanites that they began to ease their burdens; yet the Lord did not see fit to deliver them out of bondage."

In the Old Testament we're told to choose our friends carefully.  If we associate with wise men, we'll tend to be wise as well.  But if we choose fools as our companions, we'll reap destruction.  Proverbs 13:20 "He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed."

Some scriptures with a thought booklet are very familiar verses.  First they tell us that even if we have great faith and do good works, if we don't have charity, or the pure love of Christ, we have nothing.  Charity is the all important ingredient that is essential in our lives.  The verses go on to describe the qualities of charity, and what is really entails.  We would all do well to emulate these qualities in our daily lives and in our dealings with those around us.  1 Corinthians 13:1-13 "Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.  And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing.  And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing.  Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up,  Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil; Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth;  Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things. Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.  For we know in part, and we prophesy in part.  But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away.  When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.  For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.  And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity."

Daily Thoughts

In the Book of Mormon we read that the afflictions of the Nephites were great and there was no way they could deliver themselves from the Lamanites. The people murmured and complained and decided to go against the Lamanites to battle. But the Lamanites beat them back and slew many of them. A fear of the Lamanites came upon the people and there was much mourning for loved ones who had been killed. The Nephites went against the Lamanites two more times but were again defeated.  Mosiah 21:5-12 "And now the afflictions of the Nephites were great, and there was no way that they could deliver themselves out of their hands, for the Lamanites had surrounded them on every side.  And it came to pass that the people began to murmur with the king because of their afflictions; and they began to be desirous to go against them to battle. And they did afflict the king sorely with their complaints; therefore he granted unto them that they should do according to their desires.  And they gathered themselves together again, and put on their armor, and went forth against the Lamanites to drive them out of their land.  And it came to pass that the Lamanites did beat them, and drove them back, and slew many of them.  And now there was a great mourning and lamentation among the people of Limhi, the widow mourning for her husband, the son and the daughter mourning for their father, and the brothers for their brethren.  Now there were a great many widows in the land, and they did cry mightily from day to day, for a great fear of the Lamanites had come upon them.  And it came to pass that their continual cries did stir up the remainder of the people of Limhi to anger against the Lamanites; and they went again to battle, but they were driven back again, suffering much loss. Yea, they went again even the third time, and suffered in the like manner; and those that were not slain returned again to the city of Nephi."

In the Old Testament we read that lying lips re an abomination to the Lord, but He delights in those who deal truthfully.  Are we always completely honest in our dealings with our fellowmen?  Proverbs 12:22 "Lying lips are abomination to the Lord: but they that deal truly are his delight."

Some scriptures with a thought booklet tell the story of how Jesus was arrested and led away to Caiaphas, and Peter followed Him at a distance, sitting down with the servants to see the outcome.  Previously Peter had professed his loyalty to Jesus, and indeed at this point he was still following Jesus, but a true disciple would follow closely, not at a distance in an inconspicuous way.  How are we following Jesus today?  Are we following closely in a way that shows clearly that we are Jesus' disciples?  Or are we hanging back from a distance, hoping no one will notice us?  Or are we not bothering to follow at all?  Matthew 26:57-58 "And they that had laid hold on Jesus led him away to Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the elders were assembled.  But Peter followed him afar off unto the high priest's palace, and went in, and sat with the servants, to see the end."

Daily Thoughts

In the Book of Mormon we read that Limhi and his people began to dwell again in peace. But after many days the Lamanites were again stirred up to anger against them and began to come into the borders of their land. They didn't dare slay them because of the oath of their king, but they smote them on the cheeks and put heavy burdens on their backs. This was in fulfillment of prophesy.  Mosiah 21:1-4 "And it came to pass that Limhi and his people returned to the city of Nephi, and began to dwell in the land again in peace.  And it came to pass that after many days the Lamanites began again to be stirred up in anger against the Nephites, and they began to come into the borders of the land round about. Now they durst not slay them, because of the oath which their king had made unto Limhi; but they would smite them on their cheeks, and exercise authority over them; and began to put heavy burdens upon their backs, and drive them as they would a dumb ass— Yea, all this was done that the word of the Lord might be fulfilled."

In the Old Testament we read that a talebearer will spread secrets, but a faithful spirit will keep them to himself.  When someone tells us something in confidence, can we be trusted not to reveal what they say to others?   Proverbs 11:13 "A talebearer revealeth secrets: but he that is of a faithful spirit concealeth the matter."

In some scriptures with a thought booklet we're reminded again not to judge others.  The same measure we use to judge others will be used to judge us.  Sometimes it's easy for up to notice some small fault in someone else, but ignore a much larger fault in ourselves.  Before we start pointing fingers at another person, we need to make sure we're not guilty too.  It's easy to label other people as "evil."  But just as we treasure God's mercy and forgiveness in our own lives, so should we realize that it extends to others as well.  We need to let go of or self righteous attitudes and leave the judging to God.  Matthew 7:1-5 "Judge not, that ye be not judged.  For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again.  And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?  Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam is in thine own eye?  Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye."
