Daily Thoughts

In the Book of Mormon we read that the Amlicites marked themselves and the Lamanites were cursed for their rebellion.  Alma 3:4-10 "And the Amlicites were distinguished from the Nephites, for they had marked themselves with red in their foreheads after the manner of the Lamanites; nevertheless they had not shorn their heads like unto the Lamanites. Now the heads of the Lamanites were shorn; and they were naked, save it were skin which was girded about their loins, and also their armor, which was girded about them, and their bows, and their arrows, and their stones, and their slings, and so forth. And the skins of the Lamanites were dark, according to the mark which was set upon their fathers, which was a curse upon them because of their transgression and their rebellion against their brethren, who consisted of Nephi, Jacob, and Joseph, and Sam, who were just and holy men.  And their brethren sought to destroy them, therefore they were cursed; and the Lord God set a mark upon them, yea, upon Laman and Lemuel, and also the sons of Ishmael, and Ishmaelitish women.  And this was done that their seed might be distinguished from the seed of their brethren, that thereby the Lord God might preserve his people, that they might not mix and believe in incorrect traditions which would prove their destruction.  And it came to pass that whosoever did mingle his seed with that of the Lamanites did bring the same curse upon his seed.  Therefore, whosoever suffered himself to be led away by the Lamanites was called under that head, and there was a mark set upon him."

In the Old Testament we read that if we are righteous servants of the Lord, no weapon formed against us will prosper and the Lord will condemn every tongue that rises up in judgment against us.  Isaiah 54:17 "No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord, and their righteousness is of me, saith the Lord."

In a verse with a thought booklet we're told that when we come to the Lord in prayer, first we need to forgive anyone we have a grudge against.  If we expect the Lord to forgive us, we need to forgive others.  That's usually easier said than done. The story is told of someone who lost their dog and was distraught.  They visited an animal shelter who said they had a dog of similar breed there, but it was not the right dog.  They were posting signs about their lost dog when they saw a sign for a lost dog that was of the same breed as their dog.  They called that dog owner and mentioned that they'd seen a similar dog at the shelter.  Later that dog owner called to thank them.  The dog at the shelter had been his!  And he then mentioned that he'd just noticed a dog like his in the alley behind his house.  Sure enough it was their dog!  When they got outside themselves to be concerned about somebody else's dog, it had resulted in them finding their own dog. This same principle may help us forgive others when we find it impossible.  If we stop thinking about ourselves and think of others it just might take our focus off what we're angry or upset about and allow us to forgive. We don't necessarily have to do something kind for the person we're upset with (although that would be ideal!) but even if we can do a kind deed for a neighbor, or go out of our way for a family member, that will help us start thinking of others and not of our own hurts.  It's worth a try.   Mark 11: 25 "And when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought against any: that your Father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses."

Daily Thoughts

In the Book of Mormon we read that after the Nephites had finished burying the dead that had been slain in battle, they returned to their homes and families. The dead of the Lamanites and Amlicites wre cast into the waters of Sidon.  Alma 3:1-3 "And it came to pass that the Nephites who were not slain by the weapons of war, after having buried those who had been slain—now the number of the slain were not numbered, because of the greatness of their number—after they had finished burying their dead they all returned to their lands, and to their houses, and their wives, and their children. Now many women and children had been slain with the sword, and also many of their flocks and their herds; and also many of their fields of grain were destroyed, for they were trodden down by the hosts of men.  And now as many of the Lamanites and the Amlicites who had been slain upon the bank of the river Sidon were cast into the waters of Sidon; and behold their bones are in the depths of the sea, and they are many."

In the Old Testament we read that even if the mountains and the hills depart, the Lord's kindness never will, and neither will His His covenant of peace. Isaiah 54:10 "For the mountains shall depart, and the hills be removed; but my kindness shall not depart from thee, neither shall the covenant of my peace be removed, saith the Lord that hath mercy on thee."

I read several scriptures in a thought booklet that have to do with banishing fear.  Why should we waste our time fretting about a tomorrow that we cannot control and may never come?  We have enough to concern ourselves with today.  And no matter what tomorrow brings, we can trust that the Lord will be there to help us deal with it.  With Him, we can tackle anything!  Romans 8: 31, 35, 38-39 ;  Psalm 23:1-6;  Philippians 4:6-7;  Matthew 6:25-34 "What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?  Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.  He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.  He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.  Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.  Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.  Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.   Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment?  Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they?  Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature?  And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin:  And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.  Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith?  Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed?  (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things.  But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.  Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof."

Daily Thoughts

In the Book of Mormon we read that as the Nepites were heading back to Zarahemla, the Lamanites and Amlicites, being as numerous as the sand of the sea, came upon them to destroy them. However, the Nephites had prayed mightily to the Lord for help, and the Lord strengthened them so tat their enemies fell before them. Alma and Amlici were fighting one on one, and Alma pleaded with the Lord that his life would be spared so that he could be an instrument in the Lord's hands to save and preserve his people. After his prayer, the Lord strengthened him so that he was able to slay Amlici. They continued to do battle until the Lamanites and Amlicites began to flee before them, even though they were by far more numerous. The Nephites persued them to slay them. They were driven to the wilderness which was infested with wild and ravenous beasts and many died there.  From this account we see that if the Lord is on our side, it doesn't matter how many are against us.  He will strengthen us and help us no matter how much opposition we face.   Alma 2:27-38 "And behold, as they were crossing the river Sidon, the Lamanites and the Amlicites, being as numerous almost, as it were, as the sands of the sea, came upon them to destroy them.  Nevertheless, the Nephites being strengthened by the hand of the Lord, having prayed mightily to him that he would deliver them out of the hands of their enemies, therefore the Lord did hear their cries, and did strengthen them, and the Lamanites and the Amlicites did fall before them.  And it came to pass that Alma fought with Amlici with the sword, face to face; and they did contend mightily, one with another. And it came to pass that Alma, being a man of God, being exercised with much faith, cried, saying: O Lord, have mercy and spare my life, that I may be an instrument in thy hands to save and preserve this people.  Now when Alma had said these words he contended again with Amlici; and he was strengthened, insomuch that he slew Amlici with the sword.  And he also contended with the king of the Lamanites; but the king of the Lamanites fled back from before Alma and sent his guards to contend with Alma.  But Alma, with his guards, contended with the guards of the king of the Lamanites until he slew and drove them back. And thus he cleared the ground, or rather the bank, which was on the west of the river Sidon, throwing the bodies of the Lamanites who had been slain into the waters of Sidon, that thereby his people might have room to cross and contend with the Lamanites and the Amlicites on the west side of the river Sidon.  And it came to pass that when they had all crossed the river Sidon that the Lamanites and the Amlicites began to flee before them, notwithstanding they were so numerous that they could not be numbered.  And they fled before the Nephites towards the wilderness which was west and north, away beyond the borders of the land; and the Nephites did pursue them with their might, and did slay them.  Yea, they were met on every hand, and slain and driven, until they were scattered on the west, and on the north, until they had reached the wilderness, which was called Hermounts; and it was that part of the wilderness which was infested by wild and ravenous beasts.  And it came to pass that many died in the wilderness of their wounds, and were devoured by those beasts and also the vultures of the air; and their bones have been found, and have been heaped up on the earth."

In the Old Testament we read prophecies about the Messiah.  His humiliation and sufferings are described.  He made His soul an offering for sin and makes intercession for transgressors.  He suffered not only for our sins, but He also bore our griefs and sorrows.  Isaiah 53:1-12 "Who hath believed our report? and to whom is the arm of the Lord revealed?  For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him. He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not. Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.  But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.  All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.  He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth. He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare his generation? for he was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he stricken.  And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth. Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in his hand. He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities.  Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he hath poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors."

A verse with a thought booklet reminds us to be kind and tender hearted toward others, forgiving them the way the Lord forgives us.  Ephesians 4:32 "And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you."

Daily Thoughts

In the Book of Mormon we read that when Alma could pursue the Amlicites no more, they pitched their tents for the night. Alma sent spies to follow what remained of the Amlicites to find out what they were up to so he could try to prevent his people from being destroyed. The spies came back with the astonishing report that the Amlicites had joined forces with a numerous host of Lamanites. They said that unless they made haste back to the city of Zarahemla, their people would be slain and they'd lose possession of the city So they took their tents and started bck to Zarahemla.  Alma 2:20-26 "And it came to pass that when Alma could pursue the Amlicites no longer he caused that his people should pitch their tents in the valley of Gideon, the valley being called after that Gideon who was slain by the hand of Nehor with the sword; and in this valley the Nephites did pitch their tents for the night.  And Alma sent spies to follow the remnant of the Amlicites, that he might know of their plans and their plots, whereby he might guard himself against them, that he might preserve his people from being destroyed.  Now those whom he had sent out to watch the camp of the Amlicites were called Zeram, and Amnor, and Manti, and Limher; these were they who went out with their men to watch the camp of the Amlicites.  And it came to pass that on the morrow they returned into the camp of the Nephites in great haste, being greatly astonished, and struck with much fear, saying: Behold, we followed the camp of the Amlicites, and to our great astonishment, in the land of Minon, above the land of Zarahemla, in the course of the land of Nephi, we saw a numerous host of the Lamanites; and behold, the Amlicites have joined them;  And they are upon our brethren in that land; and they are fleeing before them with their flocks, and their wives, and their children, towards our city; and except we make haste they obtain possession of our city, and our fathers, and our wives, and our children be slain.  And it came to pass that the people of Nephi took their tents, and departed out of the valley of Gideon towards their city, which was the city of Zarahemla."

In the Old Testament we read that the Lord comforts us.  Why should we fear man who will die and forget God who is all powerful.  He created us and everything in the world.  When we have Him on our side, nothing else should matter.  Isaiah 51:12-15 "I, even I, am he that comforteth you: who art thou, that thou shouldest be afraid of a man that shall die, and of the son of man which shall be made as grass;  And forgettest the Lord thy maker, that hath stretched forth the heavens, and laid the foundations of the earth; and hast feared continually every day because of the fury of the oppressor, as if he were ready to destroy? and where is the fury of the oppressor?  The captive exile hasteneth that he may be loosed, and that he should not die in the pit, nor that his bread should fail.  But I am the Lord thy God, that divided the sea, whose waves roared: The Lord of hosts is his name."

A verse with a thought booklet tells us to let our lights shine before men, that they may see our good works and give glory to our Father in Heaven. Have you every visited a cave where they turned out the lights to allow you to experience total darkness?  You couldn't even see your own hand in front of your face.  If the lights weren't turned back on, could you have found your way out of the cave, avoiding the steep drop off and the tall stalagmites? We depend on Jesus to light our ways through this darkened world.  We need Him to find our way on the path of life. And if we are His followers, we can share His light with others, helping them to find their way.  Matthew 5:16 " Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven."

Daily Thoughts

In the Book of Mormon we read that Alma went with his armies to battle against the Amlicites. The Lord was with Alma and the Nephites so that they were able to slay many of the Amlicites, who began to flee before them. Alma and his armies chased after them. 12,532 of the Amlicites were killed, while 6,562 of the Nephites were killed.  Alma 2:16-19 "Now Alma, being the chief judge and the governor of the people of Nephi, therefore he went up with his people, yea, with his captains, and chief captains, yea, at the head of his armies, against the Amlicites to battle.  And they began to slay the Amlicites upon the hill east of Sidon. And the Amlicites did contend with the Nephites with great strength, insomuch that many of the Nephites did fall before the Amlicites.  Nevertheless the Lord did strengthen the hand of the Nephites, that they slew the Amlicites with great slaughter, that they began to flee before them.  And it came to pass that the Nephites did pursue the Amlicites all that day, and did slay them with much slaughter, insomuch that there were slain of the Amlicites twelve thousand five hundred thirty and two souls; and there were slain of the Nephites six thousand five hundred sixty and two souls."

In the Old Testament we read an admonition to obey the Lord and listen to His servants.  We need to trust in the Lord and be supported by Him.  Isaiah 50:10 "Who is among you that feareth the Lord, that obeyeth the voice of his servant, that walketh in darkness, and hath no light? let him trust in the name of the Lord, and stay upon his God."

Some verses with a thought booklet express Paul's feelings that he loved living in the flesh and being able to labor to bring others to Christ and find joy in faith. But he also knew that the next life with awaited him was far better.  So to live in Christ is wonderful and to die in Christ is even more glorious.  We have nothing to fear in life or death as long as we serve the Lord and have hope in Him. And the Lord knows better than we do when the right time is to call us home to Him.  If we're still here, we can know that He still have a work for us to do and a purpose to be here. An elderly man whose wife and son had died wondered why he couldn't die too.  He felt ready to join them instead of living all alone.  Then he realized that the Lord had some reason why he still needed to be there.  He decided that even if his health didn't allow him to do much, he could pray for others.  So he began to pray for the Meals on Wheels drivers who brought him his meals, for the deliverymen who brought him his medicine, and for anyone he heard about who needed help and prayers. Once he started thinking of others and feeling like he could serve them with his prayers, he started finding joy in life again.  Philippians 1:20-26 "According to my earnest expectation and my hope, that in nothing I shall be ashamed, but that with all boldness, as always, so now also Christ shall be magnified in my body, whether it be by life, or by death.  For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.  But if I live in the flesh, this is the fruit of my labour: yet what I shall choose I wot not.  For I am in a strait betwixt two, having a desire to depart, and to be with Christ; which is far better: Nevertheless to abide in the flesh is more needful for you.  And having this confidence, I know that I shall abide and continue with you all for your furtherance and joy of faith;  That your rejoicing may be more abundant in Jesus Christ for me by my coming to you again."

Daily Thoughts

In the Book of Mormon we read that the results of the election caused the people against Amlici to rejoice, but the people who were for him were angry. They got together and consecrated Amlici to be their king, in spite of the election results. The Amlicites fought against the Nephites who were the people of God, and began to make war against them.  Alma 2:8-15 "Now this did cause much joy in the hearts of those who were against him; but Amlici did stir up those who were in his favor to anger against those who were not in his favor.  And it came to pass that they gathered themselves together, and did consecrate Amlici to be their king.  Now when Amlici was made king over them he commanded them that they should take up arms against their brethren; and this he did that he might subject them to him.  Now the people of Amlici were distinguished by the name of Amlici, being called Amlicites; and the remainder were called Nephites, or the people of God. Therefore the people of the Nephites were aware of the intent of the Amlicites, and therefore they did prepare to meet them; yea, they did arm themselves with swords, and with cimeters, and with bows, and with arrows, and with stones, and with slings, and with all manner of weapons of war, of every kind.  And thus they were prepared to meet the Amlicites at the time of their coming. And there were appointed captains, and higher captains, and chief captains, according to their numbers. And it came to pass that Amlici did arm his men with all manner of weapons of war of every kind; and he also appointed rulers and leaders over his people, to lead them to war against their brethren.  And it came to pass that the Amlicites came upon the hill Amnihu, which was east of the river Sidon, which ran by the land of Zarahemla, and there they began to make war with the Nephites."

In the Old Testament we read that the Lord is our God, our Redeemer who leads us the way we should go.  If we hearken to His commandments, we'll find peace and righteousness in abundance. There is no peace unto the wicked.  Isaiah 48:17-18, 22 "Thus saith the Lord, thy Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel; I am the Lord thy God which teacheth thee to profit, which leadeth thee by the way that thou shouldest go.  O that thou hadst hearkened to my commandments! then had thy peace been as a river, and thy righteousness as the waves of the sea: There is no peace, saith the Lord, unto the wicked."

Some verses with a thought booklet, go right along with this,  talk about setting the Lord always before us and having Him always on our right hand.  If we do this we will not be moved and will experience joy and gladness, and we'll rest in hope. The Lord will show us the path of life to take where we can be in His presence in a fullness of joy for evermore.  Psalms 16:8-11 "I have set the Lord always before me: because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved.  Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoiceth: my flesh also shall rest in hope. For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell; neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.  Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore."

Daily Thoughts

In the Book of Mormon we read that a man named Amlici sought to become king. This man was cunning as to the things of the world, like Neho who slew Gideon. He gained much power over the people and drew many after him. It was his intent to destroy the church of God. There was much contention and dispute. However, the people voted on the matter, whether they were for or against Amlici, and the voice of the people was against him.  So he did not become king.  Alma 2:1-7 "And it came to pass in the commencement of the fifth year of their reign there began to be a contention among the people; for a certain man, being called Amlici, he being a very cunning man, yea, a wise man as to the wisdom of the world, he being after the order of the man that slew Gideon by the sword, who was executed according to the law—  Now this Amlici had, by his cunning, drawn away much people after him; even so much that they began to be very powerful; and they began to endeavor to establish Amlici to be a king over the people.  Now this was alarming to the people of the church, and also to all those who had not been drawn away after the persuasions of Amlici; for they knew that according to their law that such things must be established by the voice of the people.  Therefore, if it were possible that Amlici should gain the voice of the people, he, being a wicked man, would deprive them of their rights and privileges of the church; for it was his intent to destroy the church of God.  And it came to pass that the people assembled themselves together throughout all the land, every man according to his mind, whether it were for or against Amlici, in separate bodies, having much dispute and wonderful contentions one with another. And thus they did assemble themselves together to cast in their voices concerning the matter; and they were laid before the judges. And it came to pass that the voice of the people came against Amlici, that he was not made king over the people."

In the Old Testament we read that the Lord has chosen us in the furnace of affliction and has refined us. Sometimes we need to go through sore trials and tribulations in order to become the people we need to become.  Our suffering refines us and helps us to be strong.  Isaiah 48:10 " Behold, I have refined thee, but not with silver; I have chosen thee in the furnace of affliction."

Some verses with a thought booklet tell us that sometimes people sow and other people reap the harvest.  This can be true in planting crops or flowers.  Oe person might plant a wonderful garden move away, and the new residents can enjoy the fruits of the former owners labors.  It can also be true in the gospel.  One person might plant the seeds of the gospel in the life of a person who does not accept it at that time, but later (sometimes many years later) those seeds will grow and the person does accept the gospel when their hearts are ready. Sometimes we're the seed planters and other times we are able to reap the harvest of what others have already planted. Either way, we can rejoice together.  John 4:36-38 "And he that reapeth receiveth wages, and gathereth fruit unto life eternal: that both he that soweth and he that reapeth may rejoice together. And herein is that saying true, One soweth, and another reapeth.  I sent you to reap that whereon ye bestowed no labour: other men laboured, and ye are entered into their labours."

Daily Thoughts

In the Book of Mormon we read that the people became prosperous and had an abundance of worldly things. However, they did not set their hearts upon their wealth, but rather they imparted of what they had to those in need. And thus they prospered and became more wealthy than those who did not belong to the church. Those who did not belong to the church indulged in idolatry, idleness, envy, strife, and all manner of wickedness and whoredoms. However, the law was enforced against them as much as possible, so they were more careful not to allow their wickedness to be known. So peace reigned among the people.  Alma 1: 29-33 "And now, because of the steadiness of the church they began to be exceedingly rich, having abundance of all things whatsoever they stood in need—an abundance of flocks and herds, and fatlings of every kind, and also abundance of grain, and of gold, and of silver, and of precious things, and abundance of silk and fine-twined linen, and all manner of good homely cloth.  And thus, in their prosperous circumstances, they did not send away any who were naked, or that were hungry, or that were athirst, or that were sick, or that had not been nourished; and they did not set their hearts upon riches; therefore they were liberal to all, both old and young, both bond and free, both male and female, whether out of the church or in the church, having no respect to persons as to those who stood in need.  And thus they did prosper and become far more wealthy than those who did not belong to their church.  For those who did not belong to their church did indulge themselves in sorceries, and in idolatry or idleness, and in babblings, and in envyings and strife; wearing costly apparel; being lifted up in the pride of their own eyes; persecuting, lying, thieving, robbing, committing whoredoms, and murdering, and all manner of wickedness; nevertheless, the law was put in force upon all those who did transgress it, inasmuch as it was possible.  And it came to pass that by thus exercising the law upon them, every man suffering according to that which he had done, they became more still, and durst not commit any wickedness if it were known; therefore, there was much peace among the people of Nephi until the fifth year of the reign of the judges."

In the Old Testament we read that there is no God but the Lord, and we can look unto Him to be saved. Every knee shall bow to Him. All shall come to Him for strength, and those who are against Him will be ashamed.  Isaiah 45:22-24 "Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am God, and there is none else.  I have sworn by myself, the word is gone out of my mouth in righteousness, and shall not return, That unto me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear.  Surely, shall one say, in the Lord have I righteousness and strength: even to him shall men come; and all that are incensed against him shall be ashamed."

A verse with a thought booklet reminds us to put God first in our lives, and everything else will be added unto us.  Matthew 6:33 "But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you."

Daily Thoughts

In the Book of Mormon we read that the contention and persecution caused much affliction to the church, and many whose hearts were hardened had their names blotted out and withdrew themselves from the church. However, others continued to keep the commandments of God and bore their persecution with patience. All labored and were equal, both the preacher and the hearer. They did not wear costly apparel, but gave freely to the sick and needy. In spite of their persecutions, they began to have peace again.  Alma 1: 23-28 "Now this was in the second year of the reign of Alma, and it was a cause of much affliction to the church; yea, it was the cause of much trial with the church.  For the hearts of many were hardened, and their names were blotted out, that they were remembered no more among the people of God. And also many withdrew themselves from among them.  Now this was a great trial to those that did stand fast in the faith; nevertheless, they were steadfast and immovable in keeping the commandments of God, and they bore with patience the persecution which was heaped upon them.  And when the priests left their labor to impart the word of God unto the people, the people also left their labors to hear the word of God. And when the priest had imparted unto them the word of God they all returned again diligently unto their labors; and the priest, not esteeming himself above his hearers, for the preacher was no better than the hearer, neither was the teacher any better than the learner; and thus they were all equal, and they did all labor, every man according to his strength.  And they did impart of their substance, every man according to that which he had, to the poor, and the needy, and the sick, and the afflicted; and they did not wear costly apparel, yet they were neat and comely. And thus they did establish the affairs of the church; and thus they began to have continual peace again, notwithstanding all their persecutions."

In the Old Testament we read that the Lord who created us has redeemed us.  We are His and He has called us by name.  We have nothing to fear.  Whether we walk through fire or water, He will be with us.  Isaiah 43:1-2 " But now thus saith the Lord that created thee, O Jacob, and he that formed thee, O Israel, Fear not: for I have redeemed thee, I have called thee by thy name; thou art mine.  When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee."

Some scriptures with a thought booklet warn us that just as trees that don't bear good fruit are cut down and cast into the fire, the Lord will purge His floor, gathering the wheat into the storehouse but burning up the chaff with unquenchable fire.  When He comes, will we be among the righteous who are gathered to safety, or among the wicked who will be burned? We need to prepare now by repenting and making sure our lives are worthy.  Matthew 3:10-12 "And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire:  Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and gather his wheat into the garner; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire."

Daily Thoughts

In the Book of Mormon we read that even though Nehor was put to death, that did not stop the preaching of priestcraft throughout the land. Many people loved the vain things of the world and taught priestcraft in order to gain riches and honor. They pretended to belief what they preached, so the law could have no power over them.  And they did not steal or murder, for fear of the law. However, they began to persecute the humble people who belonged to the Church of God who had taken upon them the name of Christ. There grew so much contention that the people began to fight one another with their fists. Alma 1: 16-22 "Nevertheless, this did not put an end to the spreading of priestcraft through the land; for there were many who loved the vain things of the world, and they went forth preaching false doctrines; and this they did for the sake of riches and honor.  Nevertheless, they durst not lie, if it were known, for fear of the law, for liars were punished; therefore they pretended to preach according to their belief; and now the law could have no power on any man for his belief.  And they durst not steal, for fear of the law, for such were punished; neither durst they rob, nor murder, for he that murdered was punished unto death.  But it came to pass that whosoever did not belong to the church of God began to persecute those that did belong to the church of God, and had taken upon them the name of Christ.  Yea, they did persecute them, and afflict them with all manner of words, and this because of their humility; because they were not proud in their own eyes, and because they did impart the word of God, one with another, without money and without price. Now there was a strict law among the people of the church, that there should not any man, belonging to the church, arise and persecute those that did not belong to the church, and that there should be no persecution among themselves. Nevertheless, there were many among them who began to be proud, and began to contend warmly with their adversaries, even unto blows; yea, they would smite one another with their fists."

In the Old Testament we read a wonderful reminder that we do not need to feel fear or be dismayed--the Lord will strengthen us, help us, and uphold us with His right hand.  Whatever trials or struggles we might be faced with, we don't need to face them alone.  The Lord will be by our side through it all, helping us get through whatever we need to do Isaiah 41:10 "Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness."

Some verses with a thought booklet are some of the most familiar verses in the Bible.  They tell us that God so loved the world that He gave His Only Begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him will not perish but have everlasting life.  He sent His Son, not to condemn the world, but that through Him the world might be saved.  This is wonderful news!  And it's news meant for every one of us.  It's personal.  God so loved YOU that He sent His Son to save YOU.  Christ atoned for YOUR sins.  He broke the bonds of death so that YOU could live forever.  And all this was done out of love for YOU.  Yes, YOU!!!  John 3:16-17 "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.  For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved."

Daily Thoughts

In the Book of Mormon we read that after Nehor killed Gideon, he was brought before Alma to be judged.  He stood before Alma with much oldness.  Alma recognized that the man ad been practicing priestcraft and had attempted to enforce it by the sword, which he said would bring about the destruction of the people.  He had slain a righteous man whose blood cried out for vengeance. Alma condemned him to die, according to the law which Mosiah had set forth. Nehor acknowledged that he had taught the people contrary to the word of God, and then was put to death on top of the hill Manti.  Alma 1: 10-15 "And the man who slew him was taken by the people of the church, and was brought before Alma, to be judged according to the crimes which he had committed.  And it came to pass that he stood before Alma and pled for himself with much boldness.  But Alma said unto him: Behold, this is the first time that priestcraft has been introduced among this people. And behold, thou art not only guilty of priestcraft, but hast endeavored to enforce it by the sword; and were priestcraft to be enforced among this people it would prove their entire destruction.  And thou hast shed the blood of a righteous man, yea, a man who has done much good among this people; and were we to spare thee his blood would come upon us for vengeance.  Therefore thou art condemned to die, according to the law which has been given us by Mosiah, our last king; and it has been acknowledged by this people; therefore this people must abide by the law. And it came to pass that they took him; and his name was Nehor; and they carried him upon the top of the hill Manti, and there he was caused, or rather did acknowledge, between the heavens and the earth, that what he had taught to the people was contrary to the word of God; and there he suffered an ignominious death."

In the Old Testament we read that the Lord does not become weary or faint.  He gives power and strength to the weary.  If we grow tired from our burdens, we can turn to the Lord who will give us the strength to bear up under them.  Isaiah 40:28-30 "Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? there is no searching of his understanding.  He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength. Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall:"

Some scriptures with a thought booklet say that when Jesus came among His own people, they refused to receive Him.  But to those willing to receive Him and believe on Him, He gave power to become the sons of God.  John 1:11-12 "He came unto his own, and his own received him not. But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:"

Daily Thoughts

In the Book of Mormon we read that Nehor, the man we read about yesterday,  established a church after the manner of his preaching and became quite wealthy and prideful, wearing costly clothing. Gideon, a man of God, withstood him in his false teachings, which made Nehor very angry.  Nehor smote him with his sword.  Because Gideon was elderly, he could not withstand his blows and was killed.  Alma 1: 6-9 "And he began to be lifted up in the pride of his heart, and to wear very costly apparel, yea, and even began to establish a church after the manner of his preaching.  And it came to pass as he was going, to preach to those who believed on his word, he met a man who belonged to the church of God, yea, even one of their teachers; and he began to contend with him sharply, that he might lead away the people of the church; but the man withstood him, admonishing him with the words of God.  Now the name of the man was Gideon; and it was he who was an instrument in the hands of God in delivering the people of Limhi out of bondage.  Now, because Gideon withstood him with the words of God he was wroth with Gideon, and drew his sword and began to smite him. Now Gideon being stricken with many years, therefore he was not able to withstand his blows, therefore he was slain by the sword."

In the Old Testament we read about what happened to the Assyrians who thought they could so easily conquer the Israelites.  They didn't realize that with the Lord on the side of the children of Israel, the Assyrians didn't stand a chance. We need to realize the same thing.  If we have the Lord on our side, it doesn't matter what else seems to be stacked against us.  Isaiah 37:33-38 "Therefore thus saith the Lord concerning the king of Assyria, He shall not come into this city, nor shoot an arrow there, nor come before it with shields, nor cast a bank against it.  By the way that he came, by the same shall he return, and shall not come into this city, saith the Lord.  For I will defend this city to save it for mine own sake, and for my servant David's sake. Then the angel of the Lord went forth, and smote in the camp of the Assyrians a hundred and fourscore and five thousand: and when they arose early in the morning, behold, they were all dead corpses. So Sennacherib king of Assyria departed, and went and returned, and dwelt at Nineveh.  And it came to pass, as he was worshipping in the house of Nisroch his god, that Adrammelech and Sharezer his sons smote him with the sword; and they escaped into the land of Armenia: and Esar-haddon his son reigned in his stead."

Some scriptures with a thought booklet tell us that whoever commits a sin becomes a servant to sin.  But we don't need to stay in bondage.  If we're willing to repent and turn to the Lord, we can be made free through the Atonement of Jesus Christ.  And when He makes us free, we are free indeed!  John  8:34-36 "Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin.  And the servant abideth not in the house for ever: but the Son abideth ever.  If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed."

Daily Thoughts

In the Book of Mormon we read that King Mosiah died, having established laws that the people were obligated to abide by. Alma was sitting in the judgment seat when a large, strong man was brought before him to be judged. He had got about preaching to the people, saying the priests should be supported by the people and not have to labor with their own hands. He also taught that all mankind would be saved, so everybody could rejoice. People liked hearing this kind of preaching, so many believed what he said and they gave me money.  This reminds me of some mega churches that exist today.  They preach "feel good" doctrines, never mentioning sin or repentance, but just teach what people want to hear.  And people donate lots of money to them and they become quite wealthy.  Alma 1: 1-5 "Now it came to pass that in the first year of the reign of the judges over the people of Nephi, from this time forward, king Mosiah having gone the way of all the earth, having warred a good warfare, walking uprightly before God, leaving none to reign in his stead; nevertheless he had established laws, and they were acknowledged by the people; therefore they were obliged to abide by the laws which he had made.  And it came to pass that in the first year of the reign of Alma in the judgment-seat, there was a man brought before him to be judged, a man who was large, and was noted for his much strength. And he had gone about among the people, preaching to them that which he termed to be the word of God, bearing down against the church; declaring unto the people that every priest and teacher ought to become popular; and they ought not to labor with their hands, but that they ought to be supported by the people.  And he also testified unto the people that all mankind should be saved at the last day, and that they need not fear nor tremble, but that they might lift up their heads and rejoice; for the Lord had created all men, and had also redeemed all men; and, in the end, all men should have eternal life. And it came to pass that he did teach these things so much that many did believe on his words, even so many that they began to support him and give him money."

In the Old Testament we read about how Rabshakeh cried with a loud voice to the people telling them not to listen to Hezekiah who was telling them to trust in the Lord for deliverance. The gods of other nations had not saved them from the Assyrians. Hezekiah then sought counsel from Isaiah who assured them that the Lord would indeed deliver them and they had no reason to be afraid. Hezekiah turned to the Lord in prayer.  Trusting in the true and living God is not the same as trusting in false gods. If we find ourselves trusting in the false gods of money or power or other people, we will end up with disastrous results.  But if we trust in the Lord, we have no reason to fear, no matter what our circumstances are.  Isaiah 36:13-20; 37:1- 7, 15-20 "Then Rabshakeh stood, and cried with a loud voice in the Jews' language, and said, Hear ye the words of the great king, the king of Assyria. Thus saith the king, Let not Hezekiah deceive you: for he shall not be able to deliver you.  Neither let Hezekiah make you trust in the Lord, saying, The Lord will surely deliver us: this city shall not be delivered into the hand of the king of Assyria. Hearken not to Hezekiah: for thus saith the king of Assyria, Make an agreement with me by a present, and come out to me: and eat ye every one of his vine, and every one of his fig tree, and drink ye every one the waters of his own cistern;  Until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of corn and wine, a land of bread and vineyards.  Beware lest Hezekiah persuade you, saying, The Lord will deliver us. Hath any of the gods of the nations delivered his land out of the hand of the king of Assyria?  Where are the gods of Hamath and Arphad? where are the gods of Sepharvaim? and have they delivered Samaria out of my hand? Who are they among all the gods of these lands, that have delivered their land out of my hand, that the Lord should deliver Jerusalem out of my hand? And it came to pass, when king Hezekiah heard it, that he rent his clothes, and covered himself with sackcloth, and went into the house of the Lord.  And he sent Eliakim, who was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and the elders of the priests covered with sackcloth, unto Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz. And they said unto him, Thus saith Hezekiah, This day is a day of trouble, and of rebuke, and of blasphemy: for the children are come to the birth, and there is not strength to bring forth. It may be the Lord thy God will hear the words of Rabshakeh, whom the king of Assyria his master hath sent to reproach the living God, and will reprove the words which the Lord thy God hath heard: wherefore lift up thy prayer for the remnant that is left.  So the servants of king Hezekiah came to Isaiah. And Isaiah said unto them, Thus shall ye say unto your master, Thus saith the Lord, Be not afraid of the words that thou hast heard, wherewith the servants of the king of Assyria have blasphemed me.  Behold, I will send a blast upon him, and he shall hear a rumour, and return to his own land; and I will cause him to fall by the sword in his own land. And Hezekiah prayed unto the Lord, saying,  O Lord of hosts, God of Israel, that dwellest between the cherubims, thou art the God, even thou alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth: thou hast made heaven and earth. Incline thine ear, O Lord, and hear; open thine eyes, O Lord, and see: and hear all the words of Sennacherib, which hath sent to reproach the living God.  Of a truth, Lord, the kings of Assyria have laid waste all the nations, and their countries,  And have cast their gods into the fire: for they were no gods, but the work of men's hands, wood and stone: therefore they have destroyed them.  Now therefore, O Lord our God, save us from his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that thou art the Lord, even thou only."

Some scriptures with a thought booklet likewise admonish us to serve only God.  Deuteronomy 6:13-15 "Thou shalt fear the Lord thy God, and serve him, and shalt swear by his name.  Ye shall not go after other gods, of the gods of the people which are round about you;  (For the Lord thy God is a jealous God among you) lest the anger of the Lord thy God be kindled against thee, and destroy thee from off the face of the earth."

Daily Thoughts

In the Book of Mormon we read that the people loved Mosiah and esteemed him greatly. He had sought to establish peace in the land and had delivered them from bondage. They appointed judges, and Alma was appointed chief judge, as well as also being the high priest. He judged righteously and there was continual peace in the land. Alma and Mosiah both died, thus ending the reign of the kings. Mosiah 29:40-47 "And they did wax strong in love towards Mosiah; yea, they did esteem him more than any other man; for they did not look upon him as a tyrant who was seeking for gain, yea, for that lucre which doth corrupt the soul; for he had not exacted riches of them, neither had he delighted in the shedding of blood; but he had established peace in the land, and he had granted unto his people that they should be delivered from all manner of bondage; therefore they did esteem him, yea, exceedingly, beyond measure. And it came to pass that they did appoint judges to rule over them, or to judge them according to the law; and this they did throughout all the land.  And it came to pass that Alma was appointed to be the first chief judge, he being also the high priest, his father having conferred the office upon him, and having given him the charge concerning all the affairs of the church. And now it came to pass that Alma did walk in the ways of the Lord, and he did keep his commandments, and he did judge righteous judgments; and there was continual peace through the land. And thus commenced the reign of the judges throughout all the land of Zarahemla, among all the people who were called the Nephites; and Alma was the first and chief judge.  And now it came to pass that his father died, being eighty and two years old, having lived to fulfil the commandments of God.  And it came to pass that Mosiah died also, in the thirty and third year of his reign, being sixty and three years old; making in the whole, five hundred and nine years from the time Lehi left Jerusalem.  And thus ended the reign of the kings over the people of Nephi; and thus ended the days of Alma, who was the founder of their church."

In the Old Testament we read that the blind, deaf, mute, and lame will be healed of their afflictions. Sorrow and sighing will flee away and there will be joy and gladness.  What a wonderful day that will be.  Isaiah 35:5-6, 10 "Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf shall be unstopped. Then shall the lame man leap as an hart, and the tongue of the dumb sing: for in the wilderness shall waters break out, and streams in the desert. And the ransomed of the Lord shall return, and come to Zion with songs and everlasting joy upon their heads: they shall obtain joy and gladness, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away."

A verse with a thought booklet tells us that Jesus did so many wonderful things that they cannot possibly all be written.  If they were, the world would not be large enough to contain all the books!  W may think we know all about Jesus from reading the scriptures that we have, but when you ponder on this verse you realize that what we have is actually only the tip of the iceberg.  Jesus is more than we can wrap our minds around.  John 21:25 "And there are also many other things which Jesus did, the which, if they should be written every one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that should be written. Amen."

Daily Thoughts

In the Book of Mormon we read that after the people read King Mosiah's words, they believed what he said and relinquished their desires for a king. They decided to vote on who should be their judges and rejoiced in the liberty which had been granted to them.  Mosiah 29:37-39 "And now it came to pass, after king Mosiah had sent these things forth among the people they were convinced of the truth of his words. Therefore they relinquished their desires for a king, and became exceedingly anxious that every man should have an equal chance throughout all the land; yea, and every man expressed a willingness to answer for his own sins.  Therefore, it came to pass that they assembled themselves together in bodies throughout the land, to cast in their voices concerning who should be their judges, to judge them according to the law which had been given them; and they were exceedingly rejoiced because of the liberty which had been granted unto them."

In the Old Testament we read about how foolish it is to trust in other people instead of the Lord.  Even if they're mighty and numerous and have many weapons, they are no match for the Lord.  When He comes He will defend and preserve His people.  Isaiah 31:1-9 "Woe to them that go down to Egypt for help; and stay on horses, and trust in chariots, because they are many; and in horsemen, because they are very strong; but they look not unto the Holy One of Israel, neither seek the Lord!  Yet he also is wise, and will bring evil, and will not call back his words: but will arise against the house of the evildoers, and against the help of them that work iniquity.  Now the Egyptians are men, and not God; and their horses flesh, and not spirit. When the Lord shall stretch out his hand, both he that helpeth shall fall, and he that is holpen shall fall down, and they all shall fail together.  For thus hath the Lord spoken unto me, Like as the lion and the young lion roaring on his prey, when a multitude of shepherds is called forth against him, he will not be afraid of their voice, nor abase himself for the noise of them: so shall the Lord of hosts come down to fight for mount Zion, and for the hill thereof.  As birds flying, so will the Lord of hosts defend Jerusalem; defending also he will deliver it; and passing over he will preserve it. Turn ye unto him from whom the children of Israel have deeply revolted.  For in that day every man shall cast away his idols of silver, and his idols of gold, which your own hands have made unto you for a sin. Then shall the Assyrian fall with the sword, not of a mighty man; and the sword, not of a mean man, shall devour him: but he shall flee from the sword, and his young men shall be discomfited.  And he shall pass over to his strong hold for fear, and his princes shall be afraid of the ensign, saith the Lord, whose fire is in Zion, and his furnace in Jerusalem."

A verse with a thought booklet reminds us to be strong and of good courage.  We should not be afraid or dismayed.  For the Lord will be with us wherever we go.  Joshua 1:9 "Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the Lord thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest."

Daily Thoughts

In the Book of Mormon we read that Mosiah desired the land to be a land of liberty where every man could enjoy his rights and privileges. Mosiah also talked to his people about all the travails of his soul over them. He said that this burden should not have to be born by one man, and talked about the disadvantages of having an unrighteous king.  Mosiah 29:32-36 "And now I desire that this inequality should be no more in this land, especially among this my people; but I desire that this land be a land of liberty, and every man may enjoy his rights and privileges alike, so long as the Lord sees fit that we may live and inherit the land, yea, even as long as any of our posterity remains upon the face of the land.  And many more things did king Mosiah write unto them, unfolding unto them all the trials and troubles of a righteous king, yea, all the travails of soul for their people, and also all the murmurings of the people to their king; and he explained it all unto them.  And he told them that these things ought not to be; but that the burden should come upon all the people, that every man might bear his part. And he also unfolded unto them all the disadvantages they labored under, by having an unrighteous king to rule over them;  Yea, all his iniquities and abominations, and all the wars, and contentions, and bloodshed, and the stealing, and the plundering, and the committing of whoredoms, and all manner of iniquities which cannot be enumerated—telling them that these things ought not to be, that they were expressly repugnant to the commandments of God."

In the Old Testament we read that woe will come to those who try to hide what they're doing from the Lord and whose works are in the dark.  Just as a piece of clay can't hide what it is from a potter who made it, so the Lord who created us understands everything about us.  Isaiah 29:15-16 "Woe unto them that seek deep to hide their counsel from the Lord, and their works are in the dark, and they say, Who seeth us? and who knoweth us?  Surely your turning of things upside down shall be esteemed as the potter's clay: for shall the work say of him that made it, He made me not? or shall the thing framed say of him that framed it, He had no understanding?"

A verse with a thought booklet tells us that if in all our ways we acknowledge the Lord, He will make our paths straight. Any farmer knows that in order to plow in straight rows, they need to focus on a far away object that does not move.  One man focused on a far away car, but the car drove away before he'd finished his first row, which turned out to be very crooked.  If we focus on the Savior, who remains constant, our life will travel on a straight path. If we focus on ever-changing circumstances around us we'll find ourselves on crooked roads that don't lead where we want to go. Proverbs 3:6 "In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths."

Daily Thoughts

In the Book of Mormon we read how Mosiah suggested that if the appointed judges were not doing a good job, they could be judged by higher judges. And if necessary, a higher judge could be judged by a number of lower judges. The sins of many people have been caused by their wicked kings, and the kings will have to answer to God for that.  Mosiah 29:28-31 "And now if ye have judges, and they do not judge you according to the law which has been given, ye can cause that they may be judged of a higher judge.  If your higher judges do not judge righteous judgments, ye shall cause that a small number of your lower judges should be gathered together, and they shall judge your higher judges, according to the voice of the people.  And I command you to do these things in the fear of the Lord; and I command you to do these things, and that ye have no king; that if these people commit sins and iniquities they shall be answered upon their own heads.  For behold I say unto you, the sins of many people have been caused by the iniquities of their kings; therefore their iniquities are answered upon the heads of their kings."

In the Old Testament we read about how in days of apostasy the gospel would be restored and a marvelous work and a wonder would come forth among the people.  Isaiah 29:13-14 "Wherefore the Lord said, Forasmuch as this people draw near me with their mouth, and with their lips do honour me, but have removed their heart far from me, and their fear toward me is taught by the precept of men:  Therefore, behold, I will proceed to do a marvellous work among this people, even a marvellous work and a wonder: for the wisdom of their wise men shall perish, and the understanding of their prudent men shall be hid."

Some scriptures with a thought booklet testify of the reality of Christ's atonement for our sins and His resurrection from the dead.  Witnesses are cited as evidence.  They saw the resurrected Lord.  The story is told of a young boy caught cheating on a test.  At first he denied doing so, but then admitted it when confronted with the evidence, including several children who had witnessed him copying his answers from another boy.  Solid evidence is hard to deny.  And we have solid evidence in the scriptures about the resurrection of Jesus Christ.  Plus we have the witness of the
Spirit testifying to us personally about the truth of the gospel and the mission of Jesus Christ.  As His followers, we too can testify of Him.  1 Corinthians 15:1-8 "Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand;  By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain.  For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;  And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures: And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles.  And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time."

Daily Thoughts

In the Book of Mormon we read that because of the problems involved with having kings, Mosiah recommended that judges be appointed to rule the people, after he was gone. It is not common for the voice of the people to desire that which is wrong. Usually it is just a minority who wants that which is not right. But if the time comes that the voice of the people choose iniquity, then it is the time that the judgments of God will come upon them and they will be visited with great destruction.  Considering what is going on in the world today, we may see this coming true in our own time.  Mosiah 29:25-27 "Therefore, choose you by the voice of this people, judges, that ye may be judged according to the laws which have been given you by our fathers, which are correct, and which were given them by the hand of the Lord.  Now it is not common that the voice of the people desireth anything contrary to that which is right; but it is common for the lesser part of the people to desire that which is not right; therefore this shall ye observe and make it your law—to do your business by the voice of the people.  And if the time comes that the voice of the people doth choose iniquity, then is the time that the judgments of God will come upon you; yea, then is the time he will visit you with great destruction even as he has hitherto visited this land."

In the Old Testament we read that when men are chastened and in pain, they turn to the Lord in the time of their trouble. It's natural to turn to the Lord when we're going through rough times and have no place to turn.  But do we also turn to the Lord when things are going well for us--do we lift up our voices in praise to Him when we have much to be grateful for? Let's not wait until we're chastened and at the end of our ropes before we turn t God. Isaiah 26:16-17 "Lord, in trouble have they visited thee, they poured out a prayer when thy chastening was upon them.  Like as a woman with child, that draweth near the time of her delivery, is in pain, and crieth out in her pangs; so have we been in thy sight, O Lord."

In some verses with a thought booklet we're told that every good thing and every perfect gift  comes from God. The Lord is a constant in our lives and does not change like the shifting shadows.  We can count on Him.  James 1:16-17 "Do not err, my beloved brethren.  Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning."

In the Book of Mormon we read that a wicked king cannot be dethroned except through contention and bloodshed.  Mosiah 29:21-24 "And behold, now I say unto you, ye cannot dethrone an iniquitous king save it be through much contention, and the shedding of much blood. For behold, he has his friends in iniquity, and he keepeth his guards about him; and he teareth up the laws of those who have reigned in righteousness before him; and he trampleth under his feet the commandments of God; And he enacteth laws, and sendeth them forth among his people, yea, laws after the manner of his own wickedness; and whosoever doth not obey his laws he causeth to be destroyed; and whosoever doth rebel against him he will send his armies against them to war, and if he can he will destroy them; and thus an unrighteous king doth pervert the ways of all righteousness. And now behold I say unto you, it is not expedient that such abominations should come upon you."

In the Old Testament we read that if we trust in the Lord and keep our mind on Him, He will keep us in perfect peace.  No matter what our circumstances, if we focus on the Lord instead of our troubles, we'll be able to experience peace in our lives. If we trust in Him, He'll give us the strength that we need.  Isaiah 26:3-4 "Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.  Trust ye in the Lord for ever: for in the Lord JEHOVAH is everlasting strength:"

Some verses with a thought booklet tell the story of Doubting Thomas and how he refused to believe that Jesus had been resurrected until he saw it for himself.  Eventually he did see for himself, and then he believed.  Jesus said that more blessed are those who believe without seeing.  That's you and me!  We haven't beheld Jesus with our eyes, but we can have faith that He lives.  We can trust that He was resurrected and that He has conquered death.  When we have faith, we don't need to see to believe.  John 20:24-29 "But Thomas, one of the twelve, called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came.  The other disciples therefore said unto him, We have seen the Lord. But he said unto them, Except I shall see in his hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and thrust my hand into his side, I will not believe. And after eight days again his disciples were within, and Thomas with them: then came Jesus, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, Peace be unto you.  Then saith he to Thomas, Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into my side: and be not faithless, but believing. And Thomas answered and said unto him, My Lord and my God.  Jesus saith unto him, Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed."

Daily Thoughts

In the Book of Mormon we read that one wicked king can cause much iniquity and great destruction! For example, King Noah's wickedness brought the people into bondage. It was only because o the interposition of God and the fact hat the people humbled themselves and prayed mightily that they were delivered from bondage.  God extends His arm of mercy toward those who trust in Him.  Mosiah 29:17-20 "For behold, how much iniquity doth one wicked king cause to be committed, yea, and what great destruction!  Yea, remember king Noah, his wickedness and his abominations, and also the wickedness and abominations of his people. Behold what great destruction did come upon them; and also because of their iniquities they were brought into bondage.  And were it not for the interposition of their all-wise Creator, and this because of their sincere repentance, they must unavoidably remain in bondage until now.  But behold, he did deliver them because they did humble themselves before him; and because they cried mightily unto him he did deliver them out of bondage; and thus doth the Lord work with his power in all cases among the children of men, extending the arm of mercy towards them that put their trust in him."

In the Old Testament we read that men will transgress the law and break the everlasting covenant, so a curse will devour the earth and the wicked will be burned, with few men left.  Isaiah 24:5-6 "The earth also is defiled under the inhabitants thereof; because they have transgressed the laws, changed the ordinance, broken the everlasting covenant.  Therefore hath the curse devoured the earth, and they that dwell therein are desolate: therefore the inhabitants of the earth are burned, and few men left."

A verse with a thought booklet tells us that we'll be happy if we get wisdom and understanding.  Proverbs 3:13 "Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding."

Daily Thoughts

In the Book of Mormon we read the Mosiah said that wisdom should be used to maintain peace in the land. He said that he would remain their king for the remainder of his days, but then he proposed that instead of having another an appointed king in his stead, judges should be appointed to rule the people and judge them according to the commandments of God. It isn't always possible to find just men to be king--men like King Benjamin and Mosiah. So it isn't always expedient that there should be a king. Mosiah 29:10-16 "And now let us be wise and look forward to these things, and do that which will make for the peace of this people.  Therefore I will be your king the remainder of my days; nevertheless, let us appoint judges, to judge this people according to our law; and we will newly arrange the affairs of this people, for we will appoint wise men to be judges, that will judge this people according to the commandments of God.  Now it is better that a man should be judged of God than of man, for the judgments of God are always just, but the judgments of man are not always just.  Therefore, if it were possible that you could have just men to be your kings, who would establish the laws of God, and judge this people according to his commandments, yea, if ye could have men for your kings who would do even as my father Benjamin did for this people—I say unto you, if this could always be the case then it would be expedient that ye should always have kings to rule over you. And even I myself have labored with all the power and faculties which I have possessed, to teach you the commandments of God, and to establish peace throughout the land, that there should be no wars nor contentions, no stealing, nor plundering, nor murdering, nor any manner of iniquity;  And whosoever has committed iniquity, him have I punished according to the crime which he has committed, according to the law which has been given to us by our fathers. Now I say unto you, that because all men are not just it is not expedient that ye should have a king or kings to rule over you."

In the Old Testament we read that Babylon would fall and all her idols would be broken on the ground.  Isaiah 21:9 "And, behold, here cometh a chariot of men, with a couple of horsemen. And he answered and said, Babylon is fallen, is fallen; and all the graven images of her gods he hath broken unto the ground."

Some scriptures with a thought booklet tell us that if we are risen with Christ, we need to see for things above where Christ sits on the right hand of God, and not set our affections on worldly things.  Colossians 3:1-2 "If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth."

Daily Thoughts

In the Book of Mormon we read that none of the sons of Mosiah were willing to become king, as their father had been. Mosiah sent out a writing among his people saying that there were dangers involved with having a king, which could cause contentions among them. If the king should turn to pride and vain things he could cause the people to commit sin.  Mosiah 29:1-9 "Now when Mosiah had done this he sent out throughout all the land, among all the people, desiring to know their will concerning who should be their king. And it came to pass that the voice of the people came, saying: We are desirous that Aaron thy son should be our king and our ruler.  Now Aaron had gone up to the land of Nephi, therefore the king could not confer the kingdom upon him; neither would Aaron take upon him the kingdom; neither were any of the sons of Mosiah willing to take upon them the kingdom.  Therefore king Mosiah sent again among the people; yea, even a written word sent he among the people. And these were the words that were written, saying:  Behold, O ye my people, or my brethren, for I esteem you as such, I desire that ye should consider the cause which ye are called to consider—for ye are desirous to have a king.  Now I declare unto you that he to whom the kingdom doth rightly belong has declined, and will not take upon him the kingdom. And now if there should be another appointed in his stead, behold I fear there would rise contentions among you. And who knoweth but what my son, to whom the kingdom doth belong, should turn to be angry and draw away a part of this people after him, which would cause wars and contentions among you, which would be the cause of shedding much blood and perverting the way of the Lord, yea, and destroy the souls of many people.  Now I say unto you let us be wise and consider these things, for we have no right to destroy my son, neither should we have any right to destroy another if he should be appointed in his stead. And if my son should turn again to his pride and vain things he would recall the things which he had said, and claim his right to the kingdom, which would cause him and also this people to commit much sin."

In the Old Testament we read that Israel would be scattered and strong cities forsaken because the people had forgotten the God of their salvation.  They had not been mindful of the rock of their strength.  Isaiah 17:9-10 "In that day shall his strong cities be as a forsaken bough, and an uppermost branch, which they left because of the children of Israel: and there shall be desolation. Because thou hast forgotten the God of thy salvation, and hast not been mindful of the rock of thy strength, therefore shalt thou plant pleasant plants, and shalt set it with strange slips:"

Some scriptures with a thought booklet tell about how Nehemiah decided to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem, but immediately other people laughed him to scorn and tried to discourage him from embarking on this work.  However, Nehemiah would not be dissuaded because he knew this was something the Lord wanted him to do and that the Lord would prosper him in trying to do this task.  Likewise, we may feel promptings from the Lord to do something. And people or circumstances may discourage us from trying.  But we need to be firm in our resolve, just like Nehemiah was, and proceed forward in doing what we need to do, knowing the Lord will help us succeed. Nehemiah 2:17-20 "Then said I unto them, Ye see the distress that we are in, how Jerusalem lieth waste, and the gates thereof are burned with fire: come, and let us build up the wall of Jerusalem, that we be no more a reproach.  Then I told them of the hand of my God which was good upon me; as also the king's words that he had spoken unto me. And they said, Let us rise up and build. So they strengthened their hands for this good work.  But when Sanballat the Horonite, and Tobiah the servant, the Ammonite, and Geshem the Arabian, heard it, they laughed us to scorn, and despised us, and said, What is this thing that ye do? will ye rebel against the king? Then answered I them, and said unto them, The God of heaven, he will prosper us; therefore we his servants will arise and build: but ye have no portion, nor right, nor memorial, in Jerusalem."

Daily Thoughts

In the Book of Mormon we read that Mosiah had no one to confer the kingdom on. He translated the Jaredite plates using two seer stones. It gave an account of their history from the time of Adam down to the time when they were destroyed. Mosiah gave all the records to Alma the Younger and commanded that he should keep and preserve them, and also keep a record of the people. Mosiah 28:10-20 "Now king Mosiah had no one to confer the kingdom upon, for there was not any of his sons who would accept of the kingdom.  Therefore he took the records which were engraven on the plates of brass, and also the plates of Nephi, and all the things which he had kept and preserved according to the commandments of God, after having translated and caused to be written the records which were on the plates of gold which had been found by the people of Limhi, which were delivered to him by the hand of Limhi;  And this he did because of the great anxiety of his people; for they were desirous beyond measure to know concerning those people who had been destroyed.  And now he translated them by the means of those two stones which were fastened into the two rims of a bow. Now these things were prepared from the beginning, and were handed down from generation to generation, for the purpose of interpreting languages;  And they have been kept and preserved by the hand of the Lord, that he should discover to every creature who should possess the land the iniquities and abominations of his people;  And whosoever has these things is called seer, after the manner of old times.  Now after Mosiah had finished translating these records, behold, it gave an account of the people who were destroyed, from the time that they were destroyed back to the building of the great tower, at the time the Lord confounded the language of the people and they were scattered abroad upon the face of all the earth, yea, and even from that time back until the creation of Adam.  Now this account did cause the people of Mosiah to mourn exceedingly, yea, they were filled with sorrow; nevertheless it gave them much knowledge, in the which they did rejoice.  And this account shall be written hereafter; for behold, it is expedient that all people should know the things which are written in this account.  And now, as I said unto you, that after king Mosiah had done these things, he took the plates of brass, and all the things which he had kept, and conferred them upon Alma, who was the son of Alma; yea, all the records, and also the interpreters, and conferred them upon him, and commanded him that he should keep and preserve them, and also keep a record of the people, handing them down from one generation to another, even as they had been handed down from the time that Lehi left Jerusalem."

In the Old Testament we read about how Lucifer was cast out of heaven for rebellion.  He wanted to exalt himself above God, but was brought down to hell.  Isaiah 14:12-17 "How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!  For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north:  I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High.  Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit.  They that see thee shall narrowly look upon thee, and consider thee, saying, Is this the man that made the earth to tremble, that did shake kingdoms;  That made the world as a wilderness, and destroyed the cities thereof; that opened not the house of his prisoners?"

A verse with a thought booklet tells us that if we love the Lord, we'll keep His commandments. How do we look at commandments?  Do we see them as burdensome and restricting us from doing what we'd like to be doing?  Or do we see them as loving guidelines that our Father has given us to make us happy?  If we truly love God we will delight in doing what He asks us to do.  John 14:15 "If ye love me, keep my commandments."
