Daily Thoughts

In the Book of Mormon we read that Limhi,  one of the sons of King Noah, did not want him to be destroyed. But he did realize the iniquities of his father.  Gideon sent men into the wilderness to look for them and found everyone except the king and his priests. Apparently, they had become angry with the king who did not want them to return for their wives and children and had caused him to suffer death by fire. They were going to put the priests to death too, but they fled before them. Mosiah 19:16-23 "And now there was one of the sons of the king among those that were taken captive, whose name was Limhi.  And now Limhi was desirous that his father should not be destroyed; nevertheless, Limhi was not ignorant of the iniquities of his father, he himself being a just man.  And it came to pass that Gideon sent men into the wilderness secretly, to search for the king and those that were with him. And it came to pass that they met the people in the wilderness, all save the king and his priests. Now they had sworn in their hearts that they would return to the land of Nephi, and if their wives and their children were slain, and also those that had tarried with them, that they would seek revenge, and also perish with them.  And the king commanded them that they should not return; and they were angry with the king, and caused that he should suffer, even unto death by fire. And they were about to take the priests also and put them to death, and they fled before them.  And it came to pass that they were about to return to the land of Nephi, and they met the men of Gideon. And the men of Gideon told them of all that had happened to their wives and their children; and that the Lamanites had granted unto them that they might possess the land by paying a tribute to the Lamanites of one half of all they possessed.  And the people told the men of Gideon that they had slain the king, and his priests had fled from them farther into the wilderness."

In the Old Testament we read that if sinner entice us, we should not consent to doing what they want us to do.  Just because we face temptation does not mean we need to succumb to it.  Proverbs 1:10 "My son, if sinners entice thee, consent thou not."

A verse with a thought booklet tells of when Jesus asked the Father to remove the cup from Him, if possible, but still said "Thy will be done."  Do we accept our Father's will, even when we don't understand why things can't happen the way we want them to?  Have you ever had a bird trapped in your house and tried to help it to freedom?  Did it resist your every attempt?  You were only trying to help it but it behaved as if you were trying to harm it.  Sometimes we're like this with the Lord.  He is only trying to help us and wants nothing for us but what is best.  But we resist.  We stubbornly flap our wings and try to get away from Him, thinking we know best.  But we don't.  Only when we can truly trust in the Lord and accept His will, not ours, will we receive the rich blessings He has in store for us.  Luke 22:42 "Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done."

Daily Thoughts

In the Book of Mormon we read that the king commanded the people that they should flee before the Lamanites, so they went into the wilderness. But the Lamanites went after them and began to slay them. So the king commanded them to leave their women and children behind, who apparently ran more slowly, and make a run for it themselves. Many refused to leave their families, perfering to die with them than run away, but many did go with the king. Those who stayed behind with their wives and children had their fair women plead with the Lamanites to spare them. The Lamanites were charmed by the beauty of the women and had compassion on them. They spared their lives and took them captive back to the land of Nephi. They allowed them to possess the land on condition that they deliver up King Noah to them, and pay one half of their property as tribute to the king of the Lamanites.  Mosiah 19:9-15 "And the king commanded the people that they should flee before the Lamanites, and he himself did go before them, and they did flee into the wilderness, with their women and their children.  And it came to pass that the Lamanites did pursue them, and did overtake them, and began to slay them.  Now it came to pass that the king commanded them that all the men should leave their wives and their children, and flee before the Lamanites. Now there were many that would not leave them, but had rather stay and perish with them. And the rest left their wives and their children and fled. And it came to pass that those who tarried with their wives and their children caused that their fair daughters should stand forth and plead with the Lamanites that they would not slay them.  And it came to pass that the Lamanites had compassion on them, for they were charmed with the beauty of their women. Therefore the Lamanites did spare their lives, and took them captives and carried them back to the land of Nephi, and granted unto them that they might possess the land, under the conditions that they would deliver up king Noah into the hands of the Lamanites, and deliver up their property, even one half of all they possessed, one half of their gold, and their silver, and all their precious things, and thus they should pay tribute to the king of the Lamanites from year to year."

In the Old Testament we're told that the Lord takes pleasure in those who reverence Him and hope in His mercy.  Psalms 147:11 "The Lord taketh pleasure in them that fear him, in those that hope in his mercy."

A verse with a thought booklet tells us that as long as earth remains, there will be seed time and harvest, summer and winter, day and night.  No matter how long winter seems to last, spring will come.  No matter how dark the night, dawn will arrive. I remember one time ears ago I was going through a particularly difficult time in my life and wondered if things would ever get better.  It was early in the morning and I looked out to see that it was still pitch black outside.  The thought came to me, "Just as surely as the sun will rise this morning and light will come, just that surely will the darkness of your problems cease and things will improve."  An hour later I could see the sun starting to come up and the day brighten.  And indeed, my troubles got better and my life improved in the coming weeks as well. Sometimes we just need to be patient and hang in there.  No matter how dark the night, the dawn will come.   Genesis 8:22 "While the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease."

Daily Thoughts

In the Book of Mormon we read that the army of the King returned to him and reported that they could not find the people of God to destroy them. There began to be a great contention among the King's people, and a division among them. Gideon, a strong man who was an enemy to the King, contended with him and was about to slay him when the King ran upon a tower.  From there he told Gideon that he could see the enemy was about to come and destroy his people and begged him to spare his life so he could help his people.  Actually, he wasn't so concerned about his people as he was for his own life. But Gideon did spare him. Mosiah 19:1-8 "And it came to pass that the army of the king returned, having searched in vain for the people of the Lord.  And now behold, the forces of the king were small, having been reduced, and there began to be a division among the remainder of the people.  And the lesser part began to breathe out threatenings against the king, and there began to be a great contention among them.  And now there was a man among them whose name was Gideon, and he being a strong man and an enemy to the king, therefore he drew his sword, and swore in his wrath that he would slay the king.  And it came to pass that he fought with the king; and when the king saw that he was about to overpower him, he fled and ran and got upon the tower which was near the temple.  And Gideon pursued after him and was about to get upon the tower to slay the king, and the king cast his eyes round about towards the land of Shemlon, and behold, the army of the Lamanites were within the borders of the land. And now the king cried out in the anguish of his soul, saying: Gideon, spare me, for the Lamanites are upon us, and they will destroy us; yea, they will destroy my people.  And now the king was not so much concerned about his people as he was about his own life; nevertheless, Gideon did spare his life."

In the Old Testament we read that the Lord is near to all who call upon Him and He preserves those who love Him.  However, He will destroy the wicked.  Psalms 145:17-20 "The Lord is righteous in all his ways, and holy in all his works. The Lord is nigh unto all them that call upon him, to all that call upon him in truth.  He will fulfil the desire of them that fear him: he also will hear their cry, and will save them.  The Lord preserveth all them that love him: but all the wicked will he destroy."

In some verses with a thought booklet we read the story of how Jesus was brought before Pilot who had to decide if He was to be crucified or not.  Pilot knew that Jesus was innocent and wanted to release Him, but was under great pressure to have Him killed.  He wanted to remain popular with the crowds and didn't have the courage to stand up for what he knew to be right.  He thought maybe he could get out of making this decision by turning it over to the people, asking them to decide between releasing Jesus or releasing a murderer, Barabbas. He thought surely they wouldn't want a murderer released.  But he was wrong.  The crowds chose wrong.  And he was too cowardly to stand up against them.  Do we have the courage to stand up for what is right, even when all those around us are shouting out for us to do what we know is wrong?  Are we able to stand up against peer pressure and do the right thing?  Matthew 27:15-28 "Now at that feast the governor was wont to release unto the people a prisoner, whom they would.  And they had then a notable prisoner, called Barabbas.  Therefore when they were gathered together, Pilate said unto them, Whom will ye that I release unto you? Barabbas, or Jesus which is called Christ?  For he knew that for envy they had delivered him. When he was set down on the judgment seat, his wife sent unto him, saying, Have thou nothing to do with that just man: for I have suffered many things this day in a dream because of him.  But the chief priests and elders persuaded the multitude that they should ask Barabbas, and destroy Jesus.  The governor answered and said unto them, Whether of the twain will ye that I release unto you? They said, Barabbas. Pilate saith unto them, What shall I do then with Jesus which is called Christ? They all say unto him, Let him be crucified.  And the governor said, Why, what evil hath he done? But they cried out the more, saying, Let him be crucified. When Pilate saw that he could prevail nothing, but that rather a tumult was made, he took water, and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just person: see ye to it.  Then answered all the people, and said, His blood be on us, and on our children. Then released he Barabbas unto them: and when he had scourged Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified.  Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the common hall, and gathered unto him the whole band of soldiers.  And they stripped him, and put on him a scarlet robe."

Daily Thoughts

In the Book of Mormon we read that all these things occurred in the land of Mormon, by the waters of Mormon, which was in the borders of the land so that it would not come to the knowledge of the King. However, the King sent servants to discover them. The King claimed Alma was stirring up the people to rebel against him and he sent his army to destroy them. So Alma and 450 people who followed him fled into the wilderness.  Mosiah 18:30-35 "And now it came to pass that all this was done in Mormon, yea, by the waters of Mormon, in the forest that was near the waters of Mormon; yea, the place of Mormon, the waters of Mormon, the forest of Mormon, how beautiful are they to the eyes of them who there came to the knowledge of their Redeemer; yea, and how blessed are they, for they shall sing to his praise forever.  And these things were done in the borders of the land, that they might not come to the knowledge of the king.  But behold, it came to pass that the king, having discovered a movement among the people, sent his servants to watch them. Therefore on the day that they were assembling themselves together to hear the word of the Lord they were discovered unto the king. And now the king said that Alma was stirring up the people to rebellion against him; therefore he sent his army to destroy them.  And it came to pass that Alma and the people of the Lord were apprised of the coming of the king's army; therefore they took their tents and their families and departed into the wilderness. And they were in number about four hundred and fifty souls."

In the Old Testament we read that we can pray unto the Lord to deliver us from the snares and traps that the wicked place before us.  Psalms 141:9 "Keep me from the snares which they have laid for me, and the gins of the workers of iniquity."

A verse with a thought booklet tells us that faith without works is dead.  This can actually have two meanings.  One is that it's not enough to just say we have faith, and then not do anything to demonstrate our faith.  For example, we can't say we have faith in Jesus Christ and than blatantly break all His commandments.  We shouldn't tell a hungry person to "be filled" but not bother to feed them.  But there is another way to look at faith without works as well.  Suppose a person is unemployed and needs a job.  Is it enough to sit home day after day praying that the Lord will help them find a job, without doing anything to actively look fora job?  Or suppose a person doesn't know what kind of a job to train for or what type of education to pursue?  Should they sit at home praying for direction and refuse to do anything until they get a revelation from God specifically telling them what to do?  It's good to have faith in God, but we need to act as well as wait for God to direct us.  In other words, we need to wait actively.  Sometimes we need to take a few steps into the dark before God will illuminate our path.  If we're trying our best to make correct decisions, and pray to the Lord for help, He won't let us go very far in the wrong direction without correcting us.  It's important to have faith in God, but we also need to get moving and do what we can for ourselves.  James 2:17 "Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone."

Daily Thoughts

In the Book of Mormon we read that the people were to give to those in need according to what they had to give. They gave to one another, both temporally and spiritually according to their needs and wants.  Mosiah 18:27-29 "And again Alma commanded that the people of the church should impart of their substance, every one according to that which he had; if he have more abundantly he should impart more abundantly; and of him that had but little, but little should be required; and to him that had not should be given.  And thus they should impart of their substance of their own free will and good desires towards God, and to those priests that stood in need, yea, and to every needy, naked soul.  And this he said unto them, having been commanded of God; and they did walk uprightly before God, imparting to one another both temporally and spiritually according to their needs and their wants."

In the Old Testament we're told to give thanks unto the Lord, who is merciful and full of wisdom and goodness. He created the earth and all things thereon. He smote the Egyptians and brought Israel out from among them. He parted the Red Sea and lead His people through the wilderness.  Psalms 136:1-16 "O give thanks unto the Lord; for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever.  O give thanks unto the God of gods: for his mercy endureth for ever.  O give thanks to the Lord of lords: for his mercy endureth for ever.  To him who alone doeth great wonders: for his mercy endureth for ever. To him that by wisdom made the heavens: for his mercy endureth for ever.  To him that stretched out the earth above the waters: for his mercy endureth for ever.  To him that made great lights: for his mercy endureth for ever:  The sun to rule by day: for his mercy endureth for ever:  The moon and stars to rule by night: for his mercy endureth for ever.  To him that smote Egypt in their firstborn: for his mercy endureth for ever:  And brought out Israel from among them: for his mercy endureth for ever:  With a strong hand, and with a stretched out arm: for his mercy endureth for ever.  To him which divided the Red sea into parts: for his mercy endureth for ever:  And made Israel to pass through the midst of it: for his mercy endureth for ever:  But overthrew Pharaoh and his host in the Red sea: for his mercy endureth for ever.  To him which led his people through the wilderness: for his mercy endureth for ever."

A verse with a thought booklet tells us that Jesus is the Light of the world and if we follow Him, we will not walk in darkness but have the light of life.  Matthew 8:12 "But the children of the kingdom shall be cast out into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth."

Daily Thoughts

In the Book of Mormon we read that Alma told the people that they should keep the Sabbath day holy and give thanks unto the Lord. The priests should teach with power and authority from God and were to labor with their own hands instead of expecting the people to support them.  Mosiah 18:23-26 "And he commanded them that they should observe the sabbath day, and keep it holy, and also every day they should give thanks to the Lord their God.  And he also commanded them that the priests whom he had ordained should labor with their own hands for their support. And there was one day in every week that was set apart that they should gather themselves together to teach the people, and to worship the Lord their God, and also, as often as it was in their power, to assemble themselves together.  And the priests were not to depend upon the people for their support; but for their labor they were to receive the grace of God, that they might wax strong in the Spirit, having the knowledge of God, that they might teach with power and authority from God."

In the Old Testament we read that it is good and pleasant for brethren to dwell together in unity. Indeed, life is much better when we're getting along with each other instead of experiencing strife and contention.  Psalms 133:1 "Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!"

In some scriptures with a thought booklet we read about how Peter, due to weakness, denied the Lord three times, even though he had sworn he would not do it.  But he deeply regretted his actions and wept bitterly.  Later he was given an opportunity to tell the Lord, three times, that he loved Him, as Jesus commanded him to go feed His sheep.  We don't always do what we should, but we have the opportunity to repent and do better in the future.  Luke 22:56-62; John 21:15-17 "But a certain maid beheld him as he sat by the fire, and earnestly looked upon him, and said, This man was also with him.  And he denied him, saying, Woman, I know him not.  And after a little while another saw him, and said, Thou art also of them. And Peter said, Man, I am not.  And about the space of one hour after another confidently affirmed, saying, Of a truth this fellow also was with him: for he is a Galilæan.  And Peter said, Man, I know not what thou sayest. And immediately, while he yet spake, the cock crew.  And the Lord turned, and looked upon Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how he had said unto him, Before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice.  And Peter went out, and wept bitterly. So when they had dined, Jesus saith to Simon Peter, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me more than these? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my lambs.  He saith to him again the second time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my sheep.  He saith unto him the third time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time, Lovest thou me? And he said unto him, Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith unto him, Feed my sheep."

Daily Thoughts

In the Book of Mormon we read that whoever was baptized was added to the church. Alma ordained priests to teach the people, one priest for every 50 people. Alma said that they should teach nothing but faith and repentance and that there should be no contention among them. Their hearts should be knit together in unity and love. They became the children of God.  Mosiah 18:17-22 "And they were called the church of God, or the church of Christ, from that time forward. And it came to pass that whosoever was baptized by the power and authority of God was added to his church. And it came to pass that Alma, having authority from God, ordained priests; even one priest to every fifty of their number did he ordain to preach unto them, and to teach them concerning the things pertaining to the kingdom of God.  And he commanded them that they should teach nothing save it were the things which he had taught, and which had been spoken by the mouth of the holy prophets. Yea, even he commanded them that they should preach nothing save it were repentance and faith on the Lord, who had redeemed his people. And he commanded them that there should be no contention one with another, but that they should look forward with one eye, having one faith and one baptism, having their hearts knit together in unity and in love one towards another.  And thus he commanded them to preach. And thus they became the children of God."

In the Old Testament we read that those who trust in the Lord will be blessed.  The Lord does good to those who are upright in heart, and He brings them peace. However, the wicked shall not have place with the righteous and those who turn aside to crooked ways will be lead forth with the workers of iniquity. Psalms 125:1-5 "They that trust in the Lord shall be as mount Zion, which cannot be removed, but abideth for ever.  As the mountains are round about Jerusalem, so the Lord is round about his people from henceforth even for ever.  For the rod of the wicked shall not rest upon the lot of the righteous; lest the righteous put forth their hands unto iniquity. Do good, O Lord, unto those that be good, and to them that are upright in their hearts.  As for such as turn aside unto their crooked ways, the Lord shall lead them forth with the workers of iniquity: but peace shall be upon Israel."

Some scriptures with a thought booklet warn us to take heed, lest there be in any of s an evil heart of unbelief, departing from the living God.  We need to exhort one another every day, to avoid becoming hardened through sin.  Hebrews 3:12-13 "Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God.  But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin."

Daily Thoughts

In the Book of Mormon we read that when the people heard Alma's words they clapped their hands with joy and said it was the desire of their hearts to be baptized. Alma baptized 204 people, by immersion.  They were filled with the grace of God.  Mosiah 18:11-16 "And now when the people had heard these words, they clapped their hands for joy, and exclaimed: This is the desire of our hearts.  And now it came to pass that Alma took Helam, he being one of the first, and went and stood forth in the water, and cried, saying: O Lord, pour out thy Spirit upon thy servant, that he may do this work with holiness of heart.  And when he had said these words, the Spirit of the Lord was upon him, and he said: Helam, I baptize thee, having authority from the Almighty God, as a testimony that ye have entered into a covenant to serve him until you are dead as to the mortal body; and may the Spirit of the Lord be poured out upon you; and may he grant unto you eternal life, through the redemption of Christ, whom he has prepared from the foundation of the world. And after Alma had said these words, both Alma and Helam were buried in the water; and they arose and came forth out of the water rejoicing, being filled with the Spirit.  And again, Alma took another, and went forth a second time into the water, and baptized him according to the first, only he did not bury himself again in the water.  And after this manner he did baptize every one that went forth to the place of Mormon; and they were in number about two hundred and four souls; yea, and they were baptized in the waters of Mormon, and were filled with the grace of God."

In the Old Testament we read that those who love the law of the Lord will have great peace, and they will not be easily offended. It's impossible to feel at peace in our lives if we're out of harmony with the Lord and are not keeping His commandments.  Psalms 119:165 "Great peace have they which love thy law: and nothing shall offend them."

In some scriptures with a thought booklet we're old that God is no respecter of persons.  It doesn't matter what nation a person comes from, if they reverence God and are righteous, God will accept them. So if we have a tendency to look down on certain people because of where they come from or what race they are, we need to repent and change our attitudes. Every soul is precious in the sight of God and we should be ever mindful of that fact.  Acts 10:34-35 "Then Peter opened his mouth, and said, Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons:  But in every nation he that feareth him, and worketh righteousness, is accepted with him."

Daily Thoughts

In the Book of Mormon we read that whose who believed Alma's words went to the waters of Mormon whee they listened to Alma preach faith and repentance. He told them that if they were willing to bear one another's burdens and comfort those who stand in need of comfort, what did they have against being  baptized? By being baptized, they were making a covenant to keep the commandments and stand as a witness of God at all times and in all places. By doing this, the Lord would pour out His Spirit more abundantly upon them and they would obtain eternal life.  Mosiah 18:4-10 "And it came to pass that as many as did believe him did go forth to a place which was called Mormon, having received its name from the king, being in the borders of the land having been infested, by times or at seasons, by wild beasts.  Now, there was in Mormon a fountain of pure water, and Alma resorted thither, there being near the water a thicket of small trees, where he did hide himself in the daytime from the searches of the king.  And it came to pass that as many as believed him went thither to hear his words.  And it came to pass after many days there were a goodly number gathered together at the place of Mormon, to hear the words of Alma. Yea, all were gathered together that believed on his word, to hear him. And he did teach them, and did preach unto them repentance, and redemption, and faith on the Lord.  And it came to pass that he said unto them: Behold, here are the waters of Mormon (for thus were they called) and now, as ye are desirous to come into the fold of God, and to be called his people, and are willing to bear one another's burdens, that they may be light; Yea, and are willing to mourn with those that mourn; yea, and comfort those that stand in need of comfort, and to stand as witnesses of God at all times and in all things, and in all places that ye may be in, even until death, that ye may be redeemed of God, and be numbered with those of the first resurrection, that ye may have eternal life— Now I say unto you, if this be the desire of your hearts, what have you against being baptized in the name of the Lord, as a witness before him that ye have entered into a covenant with him, that ye will serve him and keep his commandments, that he may pour out his Spirit more abundantly upon you?"

In the Old Testament we are told to love the commandments and hate every false way.  Psalms 119:127-128 "Therefore I love thy commandments above gold; yea, above fine gold.  Therefore I esteem all thy precepts concerning all things to be right; and I hate every false way."

A verse with a thought booklet tells us what to do for other people who are overtaken by their faults.  We are to try to help them in a spirit of meekness, but be cautious to consider ourselves that we, too, won't be overcome by temptation. I've seen many instances where people remained friends with people they were trying to help, and they ended up being more influenced by their wayward friends than the other way around. It's great to want to help people, but if we find ourselves being swayed in the wrong direction by our association with them, it's time to go our separate ways.  Galatians 6:1 "Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted."

Daily Thoughts

In the Book of Mormon we read Alma, one of the priests of King Noah, repented of his sins and went about privately teaching the people the words of Abinidi. He taught them about Christ, His redemption and resurrection. Many believed in Alma's words.  Mosiah 18:1-3 "And now, it came to pass that Alma, who had fled from the servants of king Noah, repented of his sins and iniquities, and went about privately among the people, and began to teach the words of Abinadi— Yea, concerning that which was to come, and also concerning the resurrection of the dead, and the redemption of the people, which was to be brought to pass through the power, and sufferings, and death of Christ, and his resurrection and ascension into heaven.  And as many as would hear his word he did teach. And he taught them privately, that it might not come to the knowledge of the king. And many did believe his words."

In the Old Testament we read that we should meditate upon the statutes of the Lord and love and delight in the commandments.  So we're not only expected to obey the commandments, but also to love them!  Every commandment has a purpose and if we really understood that they are given for our benefit and blessing, we would love them.  And if we truly love the Lord, we'll delight in keeping His commandments.  Psalms 119:47-48 "And I will delight myself in thy commandments, which I have loved.  My hands also will I lift up unto thy commandments, which I have loved; and I will meditate in thy statutes."

Some verses with a thought booklet reassure us that absolutely nothing can separate us from the love of God.  He loves us and will always love us, and nothing can change that.  We can count on it!  Romans 8:38-39 "For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,  Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord."

Daily Thoughts

In the Book of Mormon we read that King Noah was about to release Abinidi, for he feared his word, but his priests stirred him up in anger so that he delivered him up to be slain.  As he was being burned, he prophesied that many others would suffer the pains of death by fire because of their belief in God. He also told them that because of their iniquities, they would be afflicted with all manner of diseases, and they would be smitten and scattered and suffer death by fire, just as Abinidi had. He said that God executes vengeance against those who destroy His people. Abinidi sealed the truth of his words by his death.  Mosiah 17:11-20 "And now king Noah was about to release him, for he feared his word; for he feared that the judgments of God would come upon him.  But the priests lifted up their voices against him, and began to accuse him, saying: He has reviled the king. Therefore the king was stirred up in anger against him, and he delivered him up that he might be slain.  And it came to pass that they took him and bound him, and scourged his skin with faggots, yea, even unto death.  And now when the flames began to scorch him, he cried unto them, saying:  Behold, even as ye have done unto me, so shall it come to pass that thy seed shall cause that many shall suffer the pains that I do suffer, even the pains of death by fire; and this because they believe in the salvation of the Lord their God.  And it will come to pass that ye shall be afflicted with all manner of diseases because of your iniquities. Yea, and ye shall be smitten on every hand, and shall be driven and scattered to and fro, even as a wild flock is driven by wild and ferocious beasts.  And in that day ye shall be hunted, and ye shall be taken by the hand of your enemies, and then ye shall suffer, as I suffer, the pains of death by fire.  Thus God executeth vengeance upon those that destroy his people. O God, receive my soul.  And now, when Abinadi had said these words, he fell, having suffered death by fire; yea, having been put to death because he would not deny the commandments of God, having sealed the truth of his words by his death."

A scripture in the Old Testament tells us that this is the day the Lord has made and we should rejoice and be glad in it.  Some days go better than others, but every day has things to be grateful for and rejoice in if we look for it.  I knew a lady who had this Bible verse on her answering machine.  And she lived it, always having a smile on her face and a cheerful attitude, even though she was in a wheelchair and was plagued by health problems.  This is a good verse to memorize and repeat to ourselves every day!  Psalms 118:24 "This is the day which the Lord hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it."

A verse with a thought booklet tells us that the afflictions we suffer in this life are but for a moment, and they work in us a far more exceeding weight of glory which will last forever.  When you look at things with an eternal perspective, we can see that our temporary suffering here won't last, but it can help us become the people we need to be in order to receive eternal glory.  2 Corinthians 4:17 "For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory;"

Daily Thoughts

In the Book of Mormon we read that king Noah told Abinidi that unless he would recall his words, he would be put to death.  Abinidi refused to take back what he had said and again testified as to their truthfulness. Even in the face of death, Abinidi stood firm in his testimony. Mosiah 17:5-10 "And it came to pass that the king caused that his guards should surround Abinadi and take him; and they bound him and cast him into prison. And after three days, having counseled with his priests, he caused that he should again be brought before him.  And he said unto him: Abinadi, we have found an accusation against thee, and thou art worthy of death.  For thou hast said that God himself should come down among the children of men; and now, for this cause thou shalt be put to death unless thou wilt recall all the words which thou hast spoken evil concerning me and my people. Now Abinadi said unto him: I say unto you, I will not recall the words which I have spoken unto you concerning this people, for they are true; and that ye may know of their surety I have suffered myself that I have fallen into your hands. Yea, and I will suffer even until death, and I will not recall my words, and they shall stand as a testimony against you. And if ye slay me ye will shed innocent blood, and this shall also stand as a testimony against you at the last day."

In the Old Testament we're told that it is better to trust in the Lord than put confidence in man. This seems a pretty obvious truth, but do we really live our lives to show that we believe it? If we feel prompted by the Lord to do something that doesn't make sense to us, do we run to our friends to see if they think we should go ahead with it?  If we know the Lord has given us a commandment that many people in today's world are disobeying, are we hesitant to stand up for what we know is right because that is not a popular opinion among those around us? Do we care more about pleasing God or looking good to others? It is more important to have the Lord on our side than all the people in the world. Do we truly trust Him enough to believe that and live our lives accordingly?   Psalms 118:8 "It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in man."

Some scriptures with a thought booklet illustrate how we need to love God with all our heart, soul, and might, and to keep His commandments.  And not only do we need to do these things ourselves, but parents need to teach these things diligently to their children. It's not enough to just casually mention these things every once in a while.  We need to be diligent in our teachings, and talk of these things morning and night, when we're sitting at home, and when we're walking together.  We need to take every opportunity to impart a love of God and His commandments to the younger generation.   Deuteronomy 6:5-7 "And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might. And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up."

Daily Thoughts

In the Book of Mormon we read that after Abinidi had taught his message, King Noah commanded that he should be put to death. But one of Noah's priests, Alma, believed the words of Abinidi and pleaded with the king to spare his life.  But this just made Noah angry with Alma and Alma had to flee for his life. He concealed himself and wrote the words which Abinidi had taught.  Mosiah 17:1-4 "And now it came to pass that when Abinadi had finished these sayings, that the king commanded that the priests should take him and cause that he should be put to death.  But there was one among them whose name was Alma, he also being a descendant of Nephi. And he was a young man, and he believed the words which Abinadi had spoken, for he knew concerning the iniquity which Abinadi had testified against them; therefore he began to plead with the king that he would not be angry with Abinadi, but suffer that he might depart in peace.  But the king was more wroth, and caused that Alma should be cast out from among them, and sent his servants after him that they might slay him. But he fled from before them and hid himself that they found him not. And he being concealed for many days did write all the words which Abinadi had spoken."

In the Old Testament we read that when we cry unto the Lord in our distress, he will bring us out of our troubles.  He makes the storm calm to us and brings us to our desired haven.  Psalms 107:28-30 "Then they cry unto the Lord in their trouble, and he bringeth them out of their distresses.  He maketh the storm a calm, so that the waves thereof are still.  Then are they glad because they be quiet; so he bringeth them unto their desired haven."

A verse with a thought booklet tells of Jesus' prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane. He asked the the cup be removed from Him, knowing that all things were possible with God, but then submitted His will to the Father.  We have many trials and tribulations in our lives, and it is appropriate to pray telling the Father our desires for them to be removed, is possible.  But it's also important to follow the example of our Savior and acknowledge "Nevertheless not what I will, but what thou wilt."  Only our Heavenly Father knows what is truly best for us and we need to have faith in Him and trust in Him, even when our prayers are not answered the way we might have hoped. Mark 14:36 "And he said, Abba, Father, all things are possible unto thee; take away this cup from me: nevertheless not what I will, but what thou wilt."

Daily Thoughts

In the Book of Mormon we read that Christ is the Light of the world. We will all stand before God to be judged of our works, whether they are good or evil. If they are good we'll be resurrected into eternal life and happiness.  But if we are evil, we'll receive endless damnation. We need to tremble and repent of our sins before it's too late. Redemption comes only through Jesus Christ.  Mosiah 16:9-15 "He is the light and the life of the world; yea, a light that is endless, that can never be darkened; yea, and also a life which is endless, that there can be no more death.  Even this mortal shall put on immortality, and this corruption shall put on incorruption, and shall be brought to stand before the bar of God, to be judged of him according to their works whether they be good or whether they be evil— If they be good, to the resurrection of endless life and happiness; and if they be evil, to the resurrection of endless damnation, being delivered up to the devil, who hath subjected them, which is damnation— Having gone according to their own carnal wills and desires; having never called upon the Lord while the arms of mercy were extended towards them; for the arms of mercy were extended towards them, and they would not; they being warned of their iniquities and yet they would not depart from them; and they were commanded to repent and yet they would not repent. And now, ought ye not to tremble and repent of your sins, and remember that only in and through Christ ye can be saved? Therefore, if ye teach the law of Moses, also teach that it is a shadow of those things which are to come—  Teach them that redemption cometh through Christ the Lord, who is the very Eternal Father. Amen."

In the Old Testament we read that those who are righteous at all times and keep judgment will be blessed.  Psalms 106:3 "Blessed are they that keep judgment, and he that doeth righteousness at all times."

Some scriptures with a thought booklet say that if we humble ourselves before God, in due time He will exalt us.  We can cast our cares upon Him for He cares for us.  1 Peter 5:6-7 "Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time: Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you."

Daily Thoughts

In the Book of Mormon we read that if Christ had not come into the world and broken the bands of death, there would be no resurrection and there would have been no victory over the sting of death.  Mosiah 16:6-8 "And now if Christ had not come into the world, speaking of things to come as though they had already come, there could have been no redemption.  And if Christ had not risen from the dead, or have broken the bands of death that the grave should have no victory, and that death should have no sting, there could have been no resurrection.  But there is a resurrection, therefore the grave hath no victory, and the sting of death is swallowed up in Christ."

In the Old Testament we're told that we should sing praises unto the Lord as long as we live, meditate upon Him, and be glad in Him.  Psalms 104:33-34 "I will sing unto the Lord as long as I live: I will sing praise to my God while I have my being.  My meditation of him shall be sweet: I will be glad in the Lord."

A verse with a thought booklet tells us that God works in us both to give us the will and the ability to do that which pleases Him. A tired father comes home from work and just wants to sit and rest.  But his young son has been waiting all day to play with him.  He really feels like sitting in his easy chair and reading the newspaper but he gives a quick prayer for the Lord's help and he finds the strength and the desire to do what his son needs. A newlywed is called to be the Gospel Doctrine teacher and is scared to death.  She feels totally inadequate to teach what she doesn't really understand herself.  But by humbly going to the Lord and spending hours studying, the Lord helps her be an instrument in His hands to teach in a manner pleasing to Him. If we really don't feel like we can or want to do something the Lord expects of us, we can turn to Him for help.  He can change our hearts and give us the strength we need.   Philippians 2:13 "For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure."

Daily Thoughts

In the Book of Mormon we read that Abinidi declared that the time would come when every nation would confess that God's judgments were just. The wicked will be cast out and they would howl and weep. They will not be redeemed because of their refusal to hearken to the voice of the Lord. The devil would have power over them. In fact, all people would have been lost if not for the redemption of the Lord. But those who hearken to the devil and allow him to have all power over them, are in the same state that they'd be in if the redemption had not been made.  Mosiah 16:1-5 "And now, it came to pass that after Abinadi had spoken these words he stretched forth his hand and said: The time shall come when all shall see the salvation of the Lord; when every nation, kindred, tongue, and people shall see eye to eye and shall confess before God that his judgments are just. And then shall the wicked be cast out, and they shall have cause to howl, and weep, and wail, and gnash their teeth; and this because they would not hearken unto the voice of the Lord; therefore the Lord redeemeth them not.  For they are carnal and devilish, and the devil has power over them; yea, even that old serpent that did beguile our first parents, which was the cause of their fall; which was the cause of all mankind becoming carnal, sensual, devilish, knowing evil from good, subjecting themselves to the devil.  Thus all mankind were lost; and behold, they would have been endlessly lost were it not that God redeemed his people from their lost and fallen state.  But remember that he that persists in his own carnal nature, and goes on in the ways of sin and rebellion against God, remaineth in his fallen state and the devil hath all power over him. Therefore he is as though there was no redemption made, being an enemy to God; and also is the devil an enemy to God."

In the Old Testament we're reminded to bless the Lord and not forget all the things He has done for us.  He has forgiven us for our sins, heals our diseases, redeemed us, and showered us with loving kindness and tender mercies.  Psalms 103:2-4 "Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits: Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases; Who redeemeth thy life from destruction; who crowneth thee with lovingkindness and tender mercies;"

Some verses with a thought booklet recount how Peter insisted emphatically that he would never deny Jesus, even if he had to die with Him. All the other disciples said the same.  In yet, before the crock would crow, Peter would deny Him three times.  None of Jesus' disciples stood with Him through His trial and crucifixion.  How often are we eager to make commitments and promises, but then fall short of doing what we say?  Do we make big plans for exercising every day, losing weight, reading our scriptures daily, or breaking a long standing bad habit?  Do we always follow through on what we say we'll do?  Often we are weak.  But if we'll humbly pray for help, the Lord will strengthen us and help us keep our commitments.  Mark 14:29-31 "But Peter said unto him, Although all shall be offended, yet will not I.  And Jesus saith unto him, Verily I say unto thee, That this day, even in this night, before the cock crow twice, thou shalt deny me thrice.  But he spake the more vehemently, If I should die with thee, I will not deny thee in any wise. Likewise also said they all."

Daily Thoughts

In the Book of Mormon we read that salvation will be declared to all the world, the Lord will make bare His holy arm, and all the ends of the earth shall see the salvation of our God.  Mosiah 15:28- 31 "And now I say unto you that the time shall come that the salvation of the Lord shall be declared to every nation, kindred, tongue, and people.  Yea, Lord, thy watchmen shall lift up their voice; with the voice together shall they sing; for they shall see eye to eye, when the Lord shall bring again Zion. Break forth into joy, sing together, ye waste places of Jerusalem; for the Lord hath comforted his people, he hath redeemed Jerusalem.  The Lord hath made bare his holy arm in the eyes of all the nations; and all the ends of the earth shall see the salvation of our God."

In the Old Testament we read that we need to serve the Lord with singing and  gladness, be thankful unto Him and bless His name. He is good and His mercy is everlasting.  Psalms 100:1-5 "Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all ye lands. Serve the Lord with gladness: come before his presence with singing.  Know ye that the Lord he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.  Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name. For the Lord is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations."

Some verses with a thought booklet tell us that even though in times past we may have been dead in trespasses and sins, walking in the ways of the world, the Lord has quickened us and the Spirit has worked in us.  The Lord, who is rich in mercy, shows great love and kindness toward us. We all sin and if our salvation depended on our works, none of us can be saved.  It is only through the grace of God that any of us can be saved.  That doesn't mean that we can continue to sin and expect to be saved.  We need to do our part--have faith and be willing to repent of our sins and do better.  But it is only because of the Atonement of Jesus Christ that we can be forgiven for our sins when we do repent.  We cannot save ourselves without Jesus Christ, no matter how good we are.  Ephesians 2:1-10 "And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins; Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:  Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.  But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us,  Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)  And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:  That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus.  For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:  Not of works, lest any man should boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them."

Daily Thoughts

In the Book of Mormon we read that those who rebel against God and die in their sins will have no pat in the first resurrection. They have reason to fear and tremble.   Mosiah 15:26-27 "But behold, and fear, and tremble before God, for ye ought to tremble; for the Lord redeemeth none such that rebel against him and die in their sins; yea, even all those that have perished in their sins ever since the world began, that have wilfully rebelled against God, that have known the commandments of God, and would not keep them; these are they that have no part in the first resurrection. Therefore ought ye not to tremble? For salvation cometh to none such; for the Lord hath redeemed none such; yea, neither can the Lord redeem such; for he cannot deny himself; for he cannot deny justice when it has its claim."

In the Old Testament we read that the wicked sometimes seem to triumph as they go about doing awful things and  boast of their evil deeds.  They commit sins and think the Lord doesn't see or regard what they do.  But they are fools. How could the Lord who created the ear not be able to hear?  Or who created the eye not be able to see?  The Lord will bring their own iniquities upon the wicked and He will cut them off.  Psalms 94:3-9, 23 "Lord, how long shall the wicked, how long shall the wicked triumph?  How long shall they utter and speak hard things? and all the workers of iniquity boast themselves? They break in pieces thy people, O Lord, and afflict thine heritage.  They slay the widow and the stranger, and murder the fatherless.  Yet they say, The Lord shall not see, neither shall the God of Jacob regard it.  Understand, ye brutish among the people: and ye fools, when will ye be wise? He that planted the ear, shall he not hear? he that formed the eye, shall he not see? And he shall bring upon them their own iniquity, and shall cut them off in their own wickedness; yea, the Lord our God shall cut them off."

A verse with a thought booklet tells us that we can cry unto the Lord in our troubles and He will deliver us out of our distresses. We can turn to the Lord for help with whatever we're struggling with.  Psalms 107:6 "Then they cried unto the Lord in their trouble, and he delivered them out of their distresses."

Daily Thoughts

In the Book of Mormon we read that those who died in ignorance before Christ came and little children who died before reaching the age of accountability will have part in the first resurrection.  Mosiah 15:24-25 "And these are those who have part in the first resurrection; and these are they that have died before Christ came, in their ignorance, not having salvation declared unto them. And thus the Lord bringeth about the restoration of these; and they have a part in the first resurrection, or have eternal life, being redeemed by the Lord.  And little children also have eternal life."

In the Old Testament we read that the Lord reigns everlastingly.  Holiness adorns the House of the Lord forever.  Psalms 93:1-5 "The Lord reigneth, he is clothed with majesty; the Lord is clothed with strength, wherewith he hath girded himself: the world also is stablished, that it cannot be moved. Thy throne is established of old: thou art from everlasting.  The floods have lifted up, O Lord, the floods have lifted up their voice; the floods lift up their waves. The Lord on high is mightier than the noise of many waters, yea, than the mighty waves of the sea.  Thy testimonies are very sure: holiness becometh thine house, O Lord, for ever."

Some scriptures with a thought booklet tells the story of how the Lord sent manna to the children of Israel to feed them.  Every day there would be just enough for their needs.  If they gathered over the amount needed, it would breed worms. But they could gather more the next day.  The only exception was the Sabbath, when they could gather for two days and it would not spoil on the second day.  But basically, the Lord provided just the right amount for their needs.  Many things in our lives are like this.  The Lord gives us what we need for each day and we need to trust in Him that He'll provide for us the next day.  Exodus 16:2-25 "And the whole congregation of the children of Israel murmured against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness: And the children of Israel said unto them, Would to God we had died by the hand of the Lord in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the flesh pots, and when we did eat bread to the full; for ye have brought us forth into this wilderness, to kill this whole assembly with hunger. Then said the Lord unto Moses, Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you; and the people shall go out and gather a certain rate every day, that I may prove them, whether they will walk in my law, or no. And it shall come to pass, that on the sixth day they shall prepare that which they bring in; and it shall be twice as much as they gather daily.  And Moses and Aaron said unto all the children of Israel, At even, then ye shall know that the Lord hath brought you out from the land of Egypt:  And in the morning, then ye shall see the glory of the Lord; for that he heareth your murmurings against the Lord: and what are we, that ye murmur against us?  And Moses said, This shall be, when the Lord shall give you in the evening flesh to eat, and in the morning bread to the full; for that the Lord heareth your murmurings which ye murmur against him: and what are we? your murmurings are not against us, but against the Lord. And Moses spake unto Aaron, Say unto all the congregation of the children of Israel, Come near before the Lord: for he hath heard your murmurings.  And it came to pass, as Aaron spake unto the whole congregation of the children of Israel, that they looked toward the wilderness, and, behold, the glory of the Lord appeared in the cloud. And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,  I have heard the murmurings of the children of Israel: speak unto them, saying, At even ye shall eat flesh, and in the morning ye shall be filled with bread; and ye shall know that I am the Lord your God.  And it came to pass, that at even the quails came up, and covered the camp: and in the morning the dew lay round about the host.  And when the dew that lay was gone up, behold, upon the face of the wilderness there lay a small round thing, as small as the hoar frost on the ground.  And when the children of Israel saw it, they said one to another, It is manna: for they wist not what it was. And Moses said unto them, This is the bread which the Lord hath given you to eat. This is the thing which the Lord hath commanded, Gather of it every man according to his eating, an omer for every man, according to the number of your persons; take ye every man for them which are in his tents.  And the children of Israel did so, and gathered, some more, some less.  And when they did mete it with an omer, he that gathered much had nothing over, and he that gathered little had no lack; they gathered every man according to his eating.  And Moses said, Let no man leave of it till the morning. Notwithstanding they hearkened not unto Moses; but some of them left of it until the morning, and it bred worms, and stank: and Moses was wroth with them.  And they gathered it every morning, every man according to his eating: and when the sun waxed hot, it melted. And it came to pass, that on the sixth day they gathered twice as much bread, two omers for one man: and all the rulers of the congregation came and told Moses.  And he said unto them, This is that which the Lord hath said, To morrow is the rest of the holy sabbath unto the Lord: bake that which ye will bake to day, and seethe that ye will seethe; and that which remaineth over lay up for you to be kept until the morning.  And they laid it up till the morning, as Moses bade: and it did not stink, neither was there any worm therein.  And Moses said, Eat that to day; for to day is a sabbath unto the Lord: to day ye shall not find it in the field."

Daily Thoughts

In the Book of Mormon we read that how beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of those who publish peace and bring good tidings. If not for the redemption of the Lord, all mankind must have perished. But the bands of death have been broken and the resurrection of the dead has been brought to pass. All the prophets down through the ages, and all those who have believed their words and kept the commandments of God will be raised in the resurrection to dwell with God. They will have eternal life.  Mosiah 15:15-23 "And O how beautiful upon the mountains were their feet!  And again, how beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of those that are still publishing peace!  And again, how beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of those who shall hereafter publish peace, yea, from this time henceforth and forever!  And behold, I say unto you, this is not all. For O how beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, that is the founder of peace, yea, even the Lord, who has redeemed his people; yea, him who has granted salvation unto his people;  For were it not for the redemption which he hath made for his people, which was prepared from the foundation of the world, I say unto you, were it not for this, all mankind must have perished.  But behold, the bands of death shall be broken, and the Son reigneth, and hath power over the dead; therefore, he bringeth to pass the resurrection of the dead.  And there cometh a resurrection, even a first resurrection; yea, even a resurrection of those that have been, and who are, and who shall be, even until the resurrection of Christ—for so shall he be called. And now, the resurrection of all the prophets, and all those that have believed in their words, or all those that have kept the commandments of God, shall come forth in the first resurrection; therefore, they are the first resurrection. They are raised to dwell with God who has redeemed them; thus they have eternal life through Christ, who has broken the bands of death."

In the Old Testament we read that the Lord is good and He is ready to forgive those who call upon Him.  We can turn to him in the times of our troubles, and He will hear us.  Psalms 86:5-7 "For thou, Lord, art good, and ready to forgive; and plenteous in mercy unto all them that call upon thee. Give ear, O Lord, unto my prayer; and attend to the voice of my supplications.  In the day of my trouble I will call upon thee: for thou wilt answer me."

In a verse with a thought booklet we're told that if a man seems to be righteous, but does not watch his words, he deceives himself and his religion is vain. Thoughtless remarks, or words spoken in anger can damage relationships and cause great pain to the people who hear our negative comment. But speaking kind and encouraging words at the right moment can make all the difference to someone who needs to hear them. Our words matter!  James 1:26 "If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man's religion is vain."

Daily Thoughts

In the Book of Mormon we read about Isaiah's prophecy that after Jesus had worked many mighty miracles, He would be lead away to be slain and crucified. He would be given power to make intercession for the children of men and would be given power over death, being resurrected. He would take upon Himself the sins of the world and make redemption, satisfying the demands of justice. His soul would be made an offering for sin. Those who believed the prophets and hearkened to their words, believing in the Lord and His redemption, would be heirs of the Kingdom of God. These are they for whom He died and whose sins he has born.  Mosiah 15:6-14 "And after all this, after working many mighty miracles among the children of men, he shall be led, yea, even as Isaiah said, as a sheep before the shearer is dumb, so he opened not his mouth.  Yea, even so he shall be led, crucified, and slain, the flesh becoming subject even unto death, the will of the Son being swallowed up in the will of the Father.  And thus God breaketh the bands of death, having gained the victory over death; giving the Son power to make intercession for the children of men—  Having ascended into heaven, having the bowels of mercy; being filled with compassion towards the children of men; standing betwixt them and justice; having broken the bands of death, taken upon himself their iniquity and their transgressions, having redeemed them, and satisfied the demands of justice. And now I say unto you, who shall declare his generation? Behold, I say unto you, that when his soul has been made an offering for sin he shall see his seed. And now what say ye? And who shall be his seed?  Behold I say unto you, that whosoever has heard the words of the prophets, yea, all the holy prophets who have prophesied concerning the coming of the Lord—I say unto you, that all those who have hearkened unto their words, and believed that the Lord would redeem his people, and have looked forward to that day for a remission of their sins, I say unto you, that these are his seed, or they are the heirs of the kingdom of God.  For these are they whose sins he has borne; these are they for whom he has died, to redeem them from their transgressions. And now, are they not his seed?  Yea, and are not the prophets, every one that has opened his mouth to prophesy, that has not fallen into transgression, I mean all the holy prophets ever since the world began? I say unto you that they are his seed.  And these are they who have published peace, who have brought good tidings of good, who have published salvation; and said unto Zion: Thy God reigneth!"

The Old Testament tells us that just as mercy and truth meet together, so righteousness and peace go hand in hand.  Only when we do what is right can we truly feel the peace of God.  Psalms 85:11 "Truth shall spring out of the earth; and righteousness shall look down from heaven."

Some scriptures with a thought booklet tells u to rejoice evermore, pray always, and in everything give thanks.  I always thought that trying to give thanks for every circumstance sounded like an impossible task.  How could we be thankful for a job loss or the stomach flu or the death of a loved one?  But then I noticed one word in this scripture--the word "in."  It doesn't say we need to give thanks FOR everything, but just IN everything.  So even though we may not be thankful for being ill, we can still be thankful while in that circumstance.  And even though we may not be thankful for the death of a loved one, even in the midst of our grief we can still find reason to be thankful. This is doable!  And with an attitude to gratitude, no matter what our circumstances, we'll find we'll be better able to deal with our problems and find more joy in life.  1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 "Rejoice evermore. Pray without ceasing. In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you."

Daily Thoughts

In the Book of Mormon we read that Abinidi taught that God Himself would come down and redeem His people. He would be subject unto flesh and would do the will of the Father. Christ is both the Father and the Son. He would suffer temptation but not yield to it. He would be mocked and scourged and cast out.  Mosiah 15:1-5 "And now Abinadi said unto them: I would that ye should understand that God himself shall come down among the children of men, and shall redeem his people.  And because he dwelleth in flesh he shall be called the Son of God, and having subjected the flesh to the will of the Father, being the Father and the Son— The Father, because he was conceived by the power of God; and the Son, because of the flesh; thus becoming the Father and Son— And they are one God, yea, the very Eternal Father of heaven and of earth.  And thus the flesh becoming subject to the Spirit, or the Son to the Father, being one God, suffereth temptation, and yieldeth not to the temptation, but suffereth himself to be mocked, and scourged, and cast out, and disowned by his people."

In the Old Testament we read that the Lord blesses those who trust in Him and He will withhold no good thing from those who walk uprightly.  Psalms 84:11-12 "For the Lord God is a sun and shield: the Lord will give grace and glory: no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly. O Lord of hosts, blessed is the man that trusteth in thee."

A verse with a thought booklet is a good one to read if we're depressed or downcast. Why should we feel that way when we have hope in God?  Instead of worrying needlessly over things we have no control over, we can turn them over to God and trust that He will help us through whatever comes our way. Psalms 43:5 "Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God."

Daily Thoughts

In the Book of Mormon we read Abinidi quoting Isaiah to teach of the Messiah and His sufferings and humilation.  He would make His soul an offering for sin and provide intercession for transgressors.  Mosiah 14:1-12 "Yea, even doth not Isaiah say: Who hath believed our report, and to whom is the arm of the Lord revealed?  For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of dry ground; he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him there is no beauty that we should desire him. He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief; and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not.  Surely he has borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows; yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.  But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.  All we, like sheep, have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord hath laid on him the iniquities of us all.  He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth; he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb so he opened not his mouth. He was taken from prison and from judgment; and who shall declare his generation? For he was cut off out of the land of the living; for the transgressions of my people was he stricken.  And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had done no evil, neither was any deceit in his mouth. Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise him; he hath put him to grief; when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in his hand.  He shall see the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied; by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities. Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he hath poured out his soul unto death; and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bore the sins of many, and made intercession for the transgressors."

In the Old Testament we read that the Lord commanded Israel to worship no strange gods.  The Lord is the God which brought them out of Egypt.  He heard them when they called to Him in times of trouble, and He delivered them. Psalms 81:7-10 "Thou calledst in trouble, and I delivered thee; I answered thee in the secret place of thunder: I proved thee at the waters of Meribah. Selah.  Hear, O my people, and I will testify unto thee: O Israel, if thou wilt hearken unto me; There shall no strange god be in thee; neither shalt thou worship any strange god.  I am the Lord thy God, which brought thee out of the land of Egypt: open thy mouth wide, and I will fill it."

Some verses with a thought booklet tell us that we need to listen to the Lord's words and do what He says.  If we do that, we're building a firm foundation which will withstand the storms of life.  Otherwise, it's like building a foundation on sand.  The story is told of a mother who asked her young daughter to clean her room.  A few minutes later the daughter plopped herself down on the couch to watch TV.  The mother asked her if she had done as she asked and cleaned her room.  The daughter responded that she'd taken her mother's words to heart.  She had even memorized them and made a sign out of them which she had hung in he room. She then took her mother to her room to see the sign hanging up "Clean your room."  But the room was still a mess.  The mother explained that it wasn't enough to listen to her words, or even memorize them and make a sign out of them.  She needed to actually DO what she said.  It's the same with us.  We need to not only listen to what God has to say (or even make signs quoting scriptures which we memorize) but we need to obey His words and actually do what He asks us to do. Luke 6:46-49 "And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?  Whosoever cometh to me, and heareth my sayings, and doeth them, I will shew you to whom he is like:  He is like a man which built an house, and digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it: for it was founded upon a rock.  But he that heareth, and doeth not, is like a man that without a foundation built an house upon the earth; against which the stream did beat vehemently, and immediately it fell; and the ruin of that house was great."

Daily Thoughts

In the Book of Mormon we read that after Abinidi had taught the priests the Ten Commandments, he told them that they had not taught them to the people, nor had them kept them themselves. They had taught that salvation came by the Law of Moses.  Even though it was expedient that they keep the Law of Moses, he taught them that salvation cannot come by the Law of Moses alone. The law was given to keep them in remembrance of God and their duty towards Him. He said that due to the hardness of their hearts, they did not understand that salvation comes only through the redemption of God. All down through the ages, prophets had testified that a Messiah would come, He would be oppressed and afflicted and would bring to pass the resurrection of the dead.  Mosiah 13:25-35 "And it came to pass that after Abinadi had made an end of these sayings that he said unto them: Have ye taught this people that they should observe to do all these things for to keep these commandments?  I say unto you, Nay; for if ye had, the Lord would not have caused me to come forth and to prophesy evil concerning this people. And now ye have said that salvation cometh by the law of Moses. I say unto you that it is expedient that ye should keep the law of Moses as yet; but I say unto you, that the time shall come when it shall no more be expedient to keep the law of Moses.  And moreover, I say unto you, that salvation doth not come by the law alone; and were it not for the atonement, which God himself shall make for the sins and iniquities of his people, that they must unavoidably perish, notwithstanding the law of Moses. And now I say unto you that it was expedient that there should be a law given to the children of Israel, yea, even a very strict law; for they were a stiffnecked people, quick to do iniquity, and slow to remember the Lord their God;  Therefore there was a law given them, yea, a law of performances and of ordinances, a law which they were to observe strictly from day to day, to keep them in remembrance of God and their duty towards him.  But behold, I say unto you, that all these things were types of things to come. And now, did they understand the law? I say unto you, Nay, they did not all understand the law; and this because of the hardness of their hearts; for they understood not that there could not any man be saved except it were through the redemption of God. For behold, did not Moses prophesy unto them concerning the coming of the Messiah, and that God should redeem his people? Yea, and even all the prophets who have prophesied ever since the world began—have they not spoken more or less concerning these things?  Have they not said that God himself should come down among the children of men, and take upon him the form of man, and go forth in mighty power upon the face of the earth?  Yea, and have they not said also that he should bring to pass the resurrection of the dead, and that he, himself, should be oppressed and afflicted?"

In the Old Testament we read a verse that reminds us to keep the commandments of God, not forget His works, and set our hope on Him.  Psalms 78:7 "That they might set their hope in God, and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments:"

Some scriptures with a thought booklet tell us to seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness and other things we need will be added unto us.  Instead of worrying about where our next meal is coming from, or what we'll have to wear, we need to trust in God.  He feeds the birds of the air, and are we not better than they are?  He clothes the lilies in the field, which are arrayed better than Solomon in all his glory.  So how can we have so little faith as to think He would not take care of us?  Instead of worrying about the future, we can safely trust in the Lord to take care of our needs.  Matthew 6:25-34 "Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment? Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they?  Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature?  And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin:  And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.  Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith? Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed?  (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things.  But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.  Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof."

Daily Thoughts

In the Book of Mormon we read that Abinidi continued to teach the people the commandments of God, reiterating the Ten Commandments, as given by Moses.  Mosiah 13:11-24 "And now I read unto you the remainder of the commandments of God, for I perceive that they are not written in your hearts; I perceive that ye have studied and taught iniquity the most part of your lives.  And now, ye remember that I said unto you: Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of things which are in heaven above, or which are in the earth beneath, or which are in the water under the earth. And again: Thou shalt not bow down thyself unto them, nor serve them; for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquities of the fathers upon the children, unto the third and fourth generations of them that hate me; And showing mercy unto thousands of them that love me and keep my commandments.  Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.  Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.  Six days shalt thou labor, and do all thy work;  But the seventh day, the sabbath of the Lord thy God, thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy man-servant, nor thy maid-servant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates;  For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, and the sea, and all that in them is; wherefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it. Honor thy father and thy mother, that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.  Thou shalt not kill.  Thou shalt not commit adultery. Thou shalt not steal.  Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's wife, nor his man-servant, nor his maid-servant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor anything that is thy neighbor's."

In the Old Testament we read that we should remember the works the Lord has done in times past, and meditate upon and talk about all His doings.  Psalms 77:11-12 "I will remember the works of the Lord: surely I will remember thy wonders of old.  I will meditate also of all thy work, and talk of thy doings."

Some verses with a thought booklet tell us that we hope for and patiently wait for things we cannot see.  The Spirit helps us in our weakness.  Even when we don't know what to pray for, the Spirit intercedes for us through groanings which are not uttered. And if we love God, all things will work together for our good.   Romans 8:25-28 "But if we hope for that we see not, then do we with patience wait for it.  Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.  And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.  And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose."
