Daily Thoughts

In the Old Testament it talks about the destruction of the wicked. Th destruction of Assyria is a type of destruction of the wicked at the Second Coming. Few people will be left after the Lord comes again. Isa. 10: 12-19 "Wherefore it shall come to pass, that when the Lord hath performed his whole work upon mount Zion and on Jerusalem, I will punish the fruit of the stout heart of the king of Assyria, and the glory of his high looks. For he saith, By the strength of my hand I have done it, and by my wisdom; for I am prudent: and I have removed the bounds of the people, and have robbed their treasures, and I have put down the inhabitants like a valiant man: And my hand hath found as a nest the riches of the people: and as one gathereth eggs that are left, have I gathered all the earth; and there was none that moved the wing, or opened the mouth, or peeped. Shall the axe boast itself against him that heweth therewith? or shall the saw magnify itself against him that shaketh it? as if the rod should shake itself against them that lift it up, or as if the staff should lift up itself, as if it were no wood. Therefore shall the Lord, the Lord of hosts, send among his fat ones leanness; and under his glory he shall kindle a burning like the burning of a fire. And the light of Israel shall be for a fire, and his Holy One for a flame: and it shall burn and devour his thorns and his briers in one day; And shall consume the glory of his forest, and of his fruitful field, both soul and body: and they shall be as when a standardbearer fainteth. And the rest of the trees of his forest shall be few, that a child may write them."

In the Book of Mormon I read some wonderful advice on how we need to live our lives. We need to take upon us the name of Christ and allow the Holy Ghost place in our lives. We need to be humble, and live our lives in thanksgiving for the many blessings that are ours. We need to pray constantly that we will be able to resist the temptations of the devil, and we need to be patient in bearing with our afflictions. We can have hope that one day we will be able to rest from all our afflictions. Alma 34: 38-41 "That ye contend no more against the Holy Ghost, but that ye receive it, and take upon you the name of Christ; that ye humble yourselves even to the dust, and worship God, in whatsoever place ye may be in, in spirit and in truth; and that ye live in thanksgiving daily, for the many mercies and blessings which he doth bestow upon you. Yea, and I also exhort you, my brethren, that ye be watchful unto prayer continually, that ye may not be led away by the temptations of the devil, that he may not overpower you, that ye may not become his subjects at the last day; for behold, he rewardeth you no good thing. And now my beloved brethren, I would exhort you to have patience, and that ye bear with all manner of afflictions; that ye do not revile against those who do cast you out because of your exceeding poverty, lest ye become sinners like unto them; But that ye have patience, and bear with those afflictions, with a firm hope that ye shall one day rest from all your afflictions."

A verse with a thought booklet tells us that to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded gives us life and peace. What can we do in our lives to become more spiritually minded and to not allow our sinful natures to control our thoughts? Have you ever cleaned out a cluttered closet, sorting things you wanted from things to be discarded? And the end result was a neat and organized closet containing only things worth keeping. We need to do a similar cleaning of our minds--discard the anger, gossip, evil thoughts, pride, and other sins that crowd our lives and prevent the Spirit from speaking to us and being able to influence us. Let's get rid of any thoughts that aren't worthy and become the spritually minded sons and daughters of God that He wants us to be. Rom. 8: 6 "For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace."

Daily Thoughts

In the Old Testament I read a Messianic prophecy about a Child being born, a Son given, and that He would be a Prince of Peace. Am I the only one who has trouble reading this verse without music from "The Messiah" popping into my head? Isa. 9: 6 "For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace."

In the Book of Mormon I read that we should exercise our faith by praying unto the Lord--at all times and under all circumstances. There is no aspect of our lives that we cannot pray about. But it's not enough to merely pray, we need to act. We need to do whatever we can to serve and help others, or our prayers will be in vain. Alma 34: 17-28 "Therefore may God grant unto you, my brethren, that ye may begin to exercise your faith unto repentance, that ye begin to call upon his holy name, that he would have mercy upon you; Yea, cry unto him for mercy; for he is mighty to save. Yea, humble yourselves, and continue in prayer unto him. Cry unto him when ye are in your fields, yea, over all your flocks. Cry unto him in your houses, yea, over all your household, both morning, mid-day, and evening. Yea, cry unto him against the power of your enemies. Yea, cry unto him against the devil, who is an enemy to all righteousness. Cry unto him over the crops of your fields, that ye may prosper in them. Cry over the flocks of your fields, that they may increase. But this is not all; ye must pour out your souls in your closets, and your secret places, and in your wilderness. Yea, and when you do not cry unto the Lord, let your hearts be full, drawn out in prayer unto him continually for your welfare, and also for the welfare of those who are around you. And now behold, my beloved brethren, I say unto you, do not suppose that this is all; for after ye have done all these things, if ye turn away the needy, and the naked, and visit not the sick and afflicted, and impart of your substance, if ye have, to those who stand in need—I say unto you, if ye do not any of these things, behold, your prayer is vain, and availeth you nothing, and ye are as hypocrites who do deny the faith."

Some scriptures with a thought booklet tell us that just as God comforts us in our tribulations, so we should comfort others. In order words, we can help others go through the things we struggle to go through ourselves. The thought that went with this, written by Daisy Bailey from Grabill, Indiana says: The whole incident probably took a mere seven minutes. It was dark and I was driving home late. When I was stopped at a red light, the car behind me hit me with a jolt. Angry, I got out of my car and walked toward an older gentleman to survey the damages. Then I looked into his eyes, and I saw a reflection of my own eyes many years earlier. "I'm sorry. I just came from the hospital, and I was thinking about my sick wife," the distraught man explained. There under the streetlights I touched his arm and asked if I could pray for himl. I prayed for wisdom for the doctor4s and the same grace that I had needed when my husband was in the hospital. I concluded by asking for his safety as he drove hom. "You're like an angel," he whispered. I looked at the undamaged cars, and his rejuvenated face, and said, "God loves you very much." 2 Cor. 1: 3-4 "Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God."

Daily Thoughts

A verse in the Old Testament warns us that we need to seek the Lord, not turn to peeping wizards or those who have familiar spirits. This is a warning against sorcery or soothsayers. To seek information through any way contrary to the instruction the Lord has given is a sin. Isa. 8: 19 "And when they shall say unto you, Seek unto them that have familiar spirits, and unto wizards that peep, and that mutter: should not a people seek unto their God? for the living to the dead?"

In the Book of Mormon I read a question about how, if we've read the scriptures, we can disbelieve on the Son of God. Indeed, the scriptures testify of Him and His atonement and if we read them and seek to understand them, we can't help but believe. Alma 33: 14 "Now behold, my brethren, I would ask if ye have read the scriptures? If ye have, how can ye disbelieve on the Son of God?"

Some verses with a thought booklet admonish us to bear with one another and forgive whatever grievances we may have against each other. We need to forgive others as the Lord has forgiven us. And above all other virtues, we need to put on love, which binds us together in perfect unity. The thought that went with this, written by Toni Somers from Port Aransas, Texas says: My miniature schauzer puppy yelped this morning when I accidentally stepped on her paw. For a few seconds she looked scared, as though she thought she was being punished for some unknown offense. But as soon as I petted her and reassured her with my voice, her little stump of a tail began to wag furiously and joyously. All was forgiven, and she bore me no ill will for my carelessness. Am I as quick to forgive friends and family members when they hurt me? Am I as wholehearted in expressing that forgiveness? Or would I rather nurse my injured feelings and victimhood for a while? This morning I realized that God gave me a loyal and loving pet not only to enrich my life, but also to teach me some much-needed lessons. Col. 3: 13-14 "Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye. And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness."

Daily Thoughts

In the Old Testament I read some verses that seemed confusing to me (I always have trouble understanding Isaiah). They talk about how the Lord will be a stone of stumbling and a rock of offense. I looked up an explanation of these verses in an Institute manual and it said: The Messiah is referred to in the scriiptures as a "stone" (Genesis 49:24; Psalm 118:22) and also as a "rock" (Deuteronomy 32:4, 15; 1 Samual 2:2). The prophet here uses this expression to describe the rejection of the Savior, the stumbling and offense, by the unbelieving of Israel and Judah. The New Testament writers also cited this passage in showing how the Jews for the most part rejected the Savior (Romans 9:33; 1 Peter 2:8). Isa. 8: 13-15 "Sanctify the Lord of hosts himself; and let him be your fear, and let him be your dread. And he shall be for a sanctuary; but for a stone of stumbling and for a rock of offence to both the houses of Israel, for a gin and for a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem. And many among them shall stumble, and fall, and be broken, and be snared, and be taken."

In the Book of Mormon I read a wonderful discourse likening faith to a seed that we plant and nourish so that it grows and bears wonderful fruit. In order to have faith, we first must have a desire to believe and give the Word of God place in our hearts. As our faith is increased, our knowledge and understanding grows. But we must not neglect it or take no thought for its nourishment. We need to nourish the word of God with our faith and diligence and patience, and the tree will bring forth fruit unto us. Alma 32: 26-43 "Now, as I said concerning faith—that it was not a perfect knowledge—even so it is with my words. Ye cannot know of their surety at first, unto perfection, any more than faith is a perfect knowledge. But behold, if ye will awake and arouse your faculties, even to an experiment upon my words, and exercise a particle of faith, yea, even if ye can no more than desire to believe, let this desire work in you, even until ye believe in a manner that ye can give place for a portion of my words. Now, we will compare the word unto a seed. Now, if ye give place, that a seed may be planted in your heart, behold, if it be a true seed, or a good seed, if ye do not cast it out by your unbelief, that ye will resist the Spirit of the Lord, behold, it will begin to swell within your breasts; and when you feel these swelling motions, ye will begin to say within yourselves—It must needs be that this is a good seed, or that the word is good, for it beginneth to enlarge my soul; yea, it beginneth to enlighten my understanding, yea, it beginneth to be delicious to me. Now behold, would not this increase your faith? I say unto you, Yea; nevertheless it hath not grown up to a perfect knowledge. But behold, as the seed swelleth, and sprouteth, and beginneth to grow, then you must needs say that the seed is good; for behold it swelleth, and sprouteth, and beginneth to grow. And now, behold, will not this strengthen your faith? Yea, it will strengthen your faith: for ye will say I know that this is a good seed; for behold it sprouteth and beginneth to grow. And now, behold, are ye sure that this is a good seed? I say unto you, Yea; for every seed bringeth forth unto its own likeness. Therefore, if a seed groweth it is good, but if it groweth not, behold it is not good, therefore it is cast away. And now, behold, because ye have tried the experiment, and planted the seed, and it swelleth and sprouteth, and beginneth to grow, ye must needs know that the seed is good. And now, behold, is your knowledge perfect? Yea, your knowledge is perfect in that thing, and your faith is dormant; and this because you know, for ye know that the word hath swelled your souls, and ye also know that it hath sprouted up, that your understanding doth begin to be enlightened, and your mind doth begin to expand. O then, is not this real? I say unto you, Yea, because it is light; and whatsoever is light, is good, because it is discernible, therefore ye must know that it is good; and now behold, after ye have tasted this light is your knowledge perfect? Behold I say unto you, Nay; neither must ye lay aside your faith, for ye have only exercised your faith to plant the seed that ye might try the experiment to know if the seed was good. And behold, as the tree beginneth to grow, ye will say: Let us nourish it with great care, that it may get root, that it may grow up, and bring forth fruit unto us. And now behold, if ye nourish it with much care it will get root, and grow up, and bring forth fruit. But if ye neglect the tree, and take no thought for its nourishment, behold it will not get any root; and when the heat of the sun cometh and scorcheth it, because it hath no root it withers away, and ye pluck it up and cast it out. Now, this is not because the seed was not good, neither is it because the fruit thereof would not be desirable; but it is because your ground is barren, and ye will not nourish the tree, therefore ye cannot have the fruit thereof. And thus, if ye will not nourish the word, looking forward with an eye of faith to the fruit thereof, ye can never pluck of the fruit of the tree of life. But if ye will nourish the word, yea, nourish the tree as it beginneth to grow, by your faith with great diligence, and with patience, looking forward to the fruit thereof, it shall take root; and behold it shall be a tree springing up unto everlasting life. And because of your diligence and your faith and your patience with the word in nourishing it, that it may take root in you, behold, by and by ye shall pluck the fruit thereof, which is most precious, which is sweet above all that is sweet, and which is white above all that is white, yea, and pure above all that is pure; and ye shall feast upon this fruit even until ye are filled, that ye hunger not, neither shall ye thirst. Then, my brethren, ye shall reap the rewards of your faith, and your diligence, and patience, and long-suffering, waiting for the tree to bring forth fruit unto you."

A verse with a thought booklet tells us to be steadfast in keeping the commandments of God and to tell evildoers to depart from us. We need to be selective in our choice of friends and those we choose to spend our time with. We need to be careful about what we allow into our minds, or our choice of entertainment. We need to be firm in saying to any unworthy influence, "Depart!" Ps. 119: 115 "Depart from me, ye evildoers: for I will keep the commandments of my God."

Daily Thoughts

In the Old Testament I read a prophecy by Isaiah that a virgin would conceive and bring forth a son called Immanuel. This prophecy was given hundreds of years before the Savior was born. Prophets truly can receive revelation to know things that will come to pass. Isa. 7: 14 "Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel."

In the Book of Mormon we read that faith is not to have a perfect knowledge of things; but rather to have a hope for things which are not seen, but which are true. Alma 32: 21 "And now as I said concerning faith—faith is not to have a perfect knowledge of things; therefore if ye have faith ye hope for things which are not seen, which are true."

A verse with a thought booklet admonishes us to be kind and tender hearated to one another; and we need to forgive others as Christ has forgiven us. The thought that went with this, written by Shirley Corder from Port Elizabeth, South Africa says: One morning I came away from cancer treatment with a heavy heart. I decided to head to a local market where I hoped to find an attractive scarf for my head. I had never worn a turban in my life and didn't know what I was looking for or how to fold one. Behind the counter of the hospital tuck shop stood a Muslim lady wearing an exquisite turban. "How do you fold your scarf to look like that?" I asked. She looked at me with compassion and asked, "Are you going to lose your hair?" My eyes filled with tears as I nodded. Without hesitation, the woman reached up and unraveled her turban. She showed me how to fold it and fix it to my head. As I turned to leave, she placed her hand over mine and said, "I hope everything goes well for you." A Muslim woman is not supposed to uncover her head in public. This woman pushed tradition aside, risking possible censure in order to help me, an infidel in her culture. She would have known I didn't embrace her beliefs, yet she showed me unquestioning love. How important is it for us as Christians to show love to all people, regardless of their beliefs or physical condition, being prepared to step out of our comfort zone and extend a helping hand to all people. By so doing, we show them Christ's love. Eph. 4: 32 "And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you."

Daily Thoughts

In the Old Testament I read that woe will come upon those who call evil good and good evil, and who confuse light with darkness, and who are wise in their own eyes. Think of the world today--isn't this what many people do? If you watch movies or TV you can clearly see people doing wicked things that are portrayed as being good. And people who stand up for right are often persecuted and called horrible names. Isa. 5: 20-21 "Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter! Woe unto them that are wise in their own eyes, and prudent in their own sight!"

In the Book of Mormon we read about how the curse was not removed from Korihor and word got around about what had happened to him, which caused the people to repent. Korihor went about from house to house begging for food and was finally trodden down until he was dead. And thus we see the end of someone who had perverted the ways of the Lord, and we see that the devil does not support his children at the last day, but speedily drags them down to hell. Alma 30: 56-60 "And it came to pass that the curse was not taken off of Korihor; but he was cast out, and went about from house to house begging for his food. Now the knowledge of what had happened unto Korihor was immediately published throughout all the land; yea, the proclamation was sent forth by the chief judge to all the people in the land, declaring unto those who had believed in the words of Korihor that they must speedily repent, lest the same judgments would come unto them. And it came to pass that they were all convinced of the wickedness of Korihor; therefore they were all converted again unto the Lord; and this put an end to the iniquity after the manner of Korihor. And Korihor did go about from house to house, begging food for his support. And it came to pass that as he went forth among the people, yea, among a people who had separated themselves from the Nephites and called themselves Zoramites, being led by a man whose name was Zoram—and as he went forth amongst them, behold, he was run upon and trodden down, even until he was dead.0 And thus we see the end of him who perverteth the ways of the Lord; and thus we see that the devil will not support his children at the last day, but doth speedily drag them down to hell."

A verse with a thought booklet tells of Habakkuk crying out to the Lord and wondering why his prayers are not answered. Do we sometimes feel that way? Can we trust that even when God seemingly does not answer our prayers, He is answering them in the way that is best. The story is told that when St. Augustine's mother, Monica, fervently prayed all night long for her son's conversion, praying that he would be prevented from going to the wicked city of Rome. He went anyway. But it was on that trip that he became a Christian. Later, St Augustine liked to tell people that God denied his mother's prayer once so she could be given what she had prayed for always. Sometimes by denying us a good thing we're praying for, more good comes to pass. We don't always see the whole picture. Hab. 1: 2 "O Lord, how long shall I cry, and thou wilt not hear! even cry out unto thee of violence, and thou wilt not save!"

Daily Thoughts

In the Old Testament I read about how the mighty and lofty will be humbled, and the Lord will be exalted. Isa. 5: 15-16 "And the mean man shall be brought down, and the mighty man shall be humbled, and the eyes of the lofty shall be humbled: But the Lord of hosts shall be exalted in judgment, and God that is holy shall be sanctified in righteousness."

In the Book of Mormon I read more about Korihor, the Anti-Christ, and his false and blasphemous teachings. Many of the things he says have a familiar ring to them, because they're things that atheists today still use. Korihor finally demands a sign if he is to believe, and the sign that is given is that he is struck dumb so he can no longer speak. Alma 30: 22-50 "And it came to pass that the high priest said unto him: Why do ye go about perverting the ways of the Lord? Why do ye teach this people that there shall be no Christ, to interrupt their rejoicings? Why do ye speak against all the prophecies of the holy prophets? Now the high priest's name was Giddonah. And Korihor said unto him: Because I do not teach the foolish traditions of your fathers, and because I do not teach this people to bind themselves down under the foolish ordinances and performances which are laid down by ancient priests, to usurp power and authority over them, to keep them in ignorance, that they may not lift up their heads, but be brought down according to thy words. Ye say that this people is a free people. Behold, I say they are in bondage. Ye say that those ancient prophecies are true. Behold, I say that ye do not know that they are true. Ye say that this people is a guilty and a fallen people, because of the transgression of a parent. Behold, I say that a child is not guilty because of its parents. And ye also say that Christ shall come. But behold, I say that ye do not know that there shall be a Christ. And ye say also that he shall be slain for the sins of the world— And thus ye lead away this people after the foolish traditions of your fathers, and according to your own desires; and ye keep them down, even as it were in bondage, that ye may glut yourselves with the labors of their hands, that they durst not look up with boldness, and that they durst not enjoy their rights and privileges. Yea, they durst not make use of that which is their own lest they should offend their priests, who do yoke them according to their desires, and have brought them to believe, by their traditions and their dreams and their whims and their visions and their pretended mysteries, that they should, if they did not do according to their words, offend some unknown being, who they say is God—a being who never has been seen or known, who never was nor ever will be. Now when the high priest and the chief judge saw the hardness of his heart, yea, when they saw that he would revile even against God, they would not make any reply to his words; but they caused that he should be bound; and they delivered him up into the hands of the officers, and sent him to the land of Zarahemla, that he might be brought before Alma, and the chief judge who was governor over all the land. And it came to pass that when he was brought before Alma and the chief judge, he did go on in the same manner as he did in the land of Gideon; yea, he went on to blaspheme. And he did rise up in great swelling words before Alma, and did revile against the priests and teachers, accusing them of leading away the people after the silly traditions of their fathers, for the sake of glutting on the labors of the people. Now Alma said unto him: Thou knowest that we do not glut ourselves upon the labors of this people; for behold I have labored even from the commencement of the reign of the judges until now, with mine own hands for my support, notwithstanding my many travels round about the land to declare the word of God unto my people. And notwithstanding the many labors which I have performed in the church, I have never received so much as even one senine for my labor; neither has any of my brethren, save it were in the judgment-seat; and then we have received only according to law for our time. And now, if we do not receive anything for our labors in the church, what doth it profit us to labor in the church save it were to declare the truth, that we may have rejoicings in the joy of our brethren? Then why sayest thou that we preach unto this people to get gain, when thou, of thyself, knowest that we receive no gain? And now, believest thou that we deceive this people, that causes such joy in their hearts? And Korihor answered him, Yea. And then Alma said unto him: Believest thou that there is a God? And he answered, Nay. Now Alma said unto him: Will ye deny again that there is a God, and also deny the Christ? For behold, I say unto you, I know there is a God, and also that Christ shall come. And now what evidence have ye that there is no God, or that Christ cometh not? I say unto you that ye have none, save it be your word only. But, behold, I have all things as a testimony that these things are true; and ye also have all things as a testimony unto you that they are true; and will ye deny them? Believest thou that these things are true? Behold, I know that thou believest, but thou art possessed with a lying spirit, and ye have put off the Spirit of God that it may have no place in you; but the devil has power over you, and he doth carry you about, working devices that he may destroy the children of God. And now Korihor said unto Alma: If thou wilt show me a sign, that I may be convinced that there is a God, yea, show unto me that he hath power, and then will I be convinced of the truth of thy words. But Alma said unto him: Thou hast had signs enough; will ye tempt your God? Will ye say, Show unto me a sign, when ye have the testimony of all these thy brethren, and also all the holy prophets? The scriptures are laid before thee, yea, and all things denote there is a God; yea, even the earth, and all things that are upon the face of it, yea, and its motion, yea, and also all the planets which move in their regular form do witness that there is a Supreme Creator. And yet do ye go about, leading away the hearts of this people, testifying unto them there is no God? And yet will ye deny against all these witnesses? And he said: Yea, I will deny, except ye shall show me a sign. And now it came to pass that Alma said unto him: Behold, I am grieved because of the hardness of your heart, yea, that ye will still resist the spirit of the truth, that thy soul may be destroyed. But behold, it is better that thy soul should be lost than that thou shouldst be the means of bringing many souls down to destruction, by thy lying and by thy flattering words; therefore if thou shalt deny again, behold God shall smite thee, that thou shalt become dumb, that thou shalt never open thy mouth any more, that thou shalt not deceive this people any more. Now Korihor said unto him: I do not deny the existence of a God, but I do not believe that there is a God; and I say also, that ye do not know that there is a God; and except ye show me a sign, I will not believe. Now Alma said unto him: This will I give unto thee for a sign, that thou shalt be struck dumb, according to my words; and I say, that in the name of God, ye shall be struck dumb, that ye shall no more have utterance. Now when Alma had said these words, Korihor was struck dumb, that he could not have utterance, according to the words of Alma."

A verse with a thought booklet tells us that the Lord is good and is a refuge in times of trouble. He knows and cares for those who trust in Him. Indeed, when we're troubled, we can cast our problems on the Lord and He will help us and be there for us. Nahum 1: 7 "The Lord is good, a strong hold in the day of trouble; and he knoweth them that trust in him."

Daily Thoughts

In the Old Testament I read that woe shall come upon those who drink day and night. Isa. 5: 11 "Woe unto them that rise up early in the morning, that they may follow strong drink; that continue until night, till wine inflame them!"

In the Book of Mormon I read about how Korihor, an Anti-Christ, came to Zarahemla and began preaching to the people that there was no God, no Christ, no penalty for sin, no atonement, and no prophecy. He ridiculed all these things. Sounds very similiar to what some people today are teaching. Alma 30: 6, 12-18 "But it came to pass in the *latter end of the seventeenth year, there came a man into the land of Zarahemla, and he was Anti-Christ, for he began to preach unto the people against the prophecies which had been spoken by the prophets, concerning the coming of Christ. And this Anti-Christ, whose name was Korihor, (and the law could have no hold upon him) began to preach unto the people that there should be no Christ. And after this manner did he preach, saying: O ye that are bound down under a foolish and a vain hope, why do ye yoke yourselves with such foolish things? Why do ye look for a Christ? For no man can know of anything which is to come. Behold, these things which ye call prophecies, which ye say are handed down by holy prophets, behold, they are foolish traditions of your fathers. How do ye know of their surety? Behold, ye cannot know of things which ye do not see; therefore ye cannot know that there shall be a Christ. Ye look forward and say that ye see a remission of your sins. But behold, it is the effect of a frenzied mind; and this derangement of your minds comes because of the traditions of your fathers, which lead you away into a belief of things which are not so. And many more such things did he say unto them, telling them that there could be no atonement made for the sins of men, but every man fared in this life according to the management of the creature; therefore every man prospered according to his genius, and that every man conquered according to his strength; and whatsoever a man did was no crime. And thus he did preach unto them, leading away the hearts of many, causing them to lift up their heads in their wickedness, yea, leading away many women, and also men, to commit whoredoms—telling them that when a man was dead, that was the end thereof."

A verse with a thought booklet tell us that what the Lord requires of us is to do justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with our God. Micah 6: 8 "He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?"

Daily Thoughts

In the Old Testament I read that both the righteous and the wicked will be rewarded according to their doings. If will be well for the righteous, but ill for the wicked. Isa. 3: 10-11 "Say ye to the righteous, that it shall be well with him: for they shall beat the fruit of their doings. Woe unto the wicked! it shall be ill with him: for the reward of his hands shall be given him."

In the Book of Mormon we read that there is a great inequality in men because of their sins. Those who allow thir hearts to be ensnared by the devil reap death, destruction and misery. But those who diligently labor in the vineyards of the Lord find great joy because of the light of Christ unto life. The choice is ours! Alma 28: 13-14 "And thus we see how great the inequality of man is because of sin and transgression, and the power of the devil, which comes by the cunning plans which he hath devised to ensnare the hearts of men. And thus we see the great call of diligence of men to labor in the vineyards of the Lord; and thus we see the great reason of sorrow, and also of rejoicing—sorrow because of death and destruction among men, and joy because of the light of Christ unto life."

A verse with a thought booklet prophesies of the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem, 700 years before it occurred. Micah 5: 2 "But thou, Beth-lehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting."

Daily Thoughts

In the Old Testament I read a verse that tells us that our countenances witness against us. The Institute manual has these comments about this verse: People radiate the quality of their spirit and attitude. They manifest the real person--good or evil. Isaiah warned that the disobedient cannot hide the effects of their transgressions from others. President David O. McKay provided the following insights into this principle: "Every man and every person who lives in this world wields an influence, whether for good or for evil. It is not what he says alone; it is not alone what he does. It is what he is. Every man, every person radiates what he or she really is... It is what we are and what we radiate that afects the people around us. As individuals, we must think nobler thoughts. We must not encourage vile thoughts or low aspirations. We shall radiate them if we do. If we think noble thoughts; if we encourage and cherish noble aspirations, there will be that radiation when we meet people, especially when we associate with them." Isa. 3: 9 "The shew of their countenance doth witness against them; and they declare their sin as Sodom, they hide it not. Woe unto their soul! for they have rewarded evil unto themselves."

In the Book of Mormon we read about an exceeding great joy that can only come to the truly penitent and humble seeker of happiness. Alma 27: 18 "Now was not this exceeding joy? Behold, this is joy which none receiveth save it be the truly penitent and humble seeker of happiness."

Some scriptures with a thught booklet tell us to be cheerful and generous givers and that we'll reap what we sow. If we give to the poor, we'll always have sufficient and our righteousness will remain forever. 2 Cor. 9: 6-9 "But this I say, He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully. Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work: (As it is written, He hath dispersed abroad; he hath given to the poor: his righteousness remaineth for ever."

Daily Thoughts

In the Old Testament it tells us that the proud and haughty will be humbled and brought low. The Lord alone will be exalted in that day. Isa. 2: 11-12, 17 "The lofty looks of man shall be humbled, and the haughtiness of men shall be bowed down, and the Lord alone shall be exalted in that day. For the day of the Lord of hosts shall be upon every one that is proud and lofty, and upon every one that is lifted up; and he shall be brought low: And the loftiness of man shall be bowed down, and the haughtiness of men shall be made low: and the Lord alone shall be exalted in that day."

In the Book of Mormon we read about how Ammon had previously been in an evil and sinful state, in which he'd gone about trying to destroy the church. But due to the great mercy of the Lord, he was able to repent of his sins and bring many other people to repentance also. After we're repented and felt the joy the gospel brings into our lives, we want to share that joy with others. And God is eager to forgive sins when people repent, exercise faith, bring forth good works, and pray without ceasing. Alma 26: 17-22 "Who could have supposed that our God would have been so merciful as to have snatched us from our awful, sinful, and polluted state? Behold, we went forth even in wrath, with mighty threatenings to destroy his church. Oh then, why did he not consign us to an awful destruction, yea, why did he not let the sword of his justice fall upon us, and doom us to eternal despair? Oh, my soul, almost as it were, fleeth at the thought. Behold, he did not exercise his justice upon us, but in his great mercy hath brought us over that everlasting gulf of death and misery, even to the salvation of our souls. And now behold, my brethren, what natural man is there that knoweth these things? I say unto you, there is none that knoweth these things, save it be the penitent. Yea, he that repenteth and exerciseth faith, and bringeth forth good works, and prayeth continually without ceasing—unto such it is given to know the mysteries of God; yea, unto such it shall be given to reveal things which never have been revealed; yea, and it shall be given unto such to bring thousands of souls to repentance, even as it has been given unto us to bring these our brethren to repentance."

Some scriptures with a thought booklet tell the story of Jonah being swallowed by a great fish, praying to the Lord, and being delivered when the fish vomited him up onto dry ground. Hundreds of years later when unbelieving people asked Jesus for a sign that He was the promised deliverer of His people, He told them that the only sign He'd give them was the sign of the prophet Jonah. Just as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the huge fish, so was Jesus three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. And both Jonah and Jesus came out of their three day prison. In a similar vein, baptism is also symbolic of this. We're buried in the water and come forth into a new life. Jonah 1: 17; 2: 1-10 "Now the Lord had prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights. Then Jonah prayed unto the Lord his God out of the fish's belly, And said, I cried by reason of mine affliction unto the Lord, and he heard me; out of the belly of hell cried I, and thou heardest my voice. For thou hadst cast me into the deep, in the midst of the seas; and the floods compassed me about: all thy billows and thy waves passed over me. Then I said, I am cast out of thy sight; yet I will look again toward thy holy temple. The waters compassed me about, even to the soul: the depth closed me round about, the weeds were wrapped about my head. I went down to the bottoms of the mountains; the earth with her bars was about me for ever: yet hast thou brought up my life from corruption, O Lord my God. When my soul fainted within me I remembered the Lord: and my prayer came in unto thee, into thine holy temple. They that observe lying vanities forsake their own mercy. But I will sacrifice unto thee with the voice of thanksgiving; I will pay that that I have vowed. Salvation is of the Lord. And the Lord spake unto the fish, and it vomited out Jonah upon the dry land."

Daily Thoughts

In the Old Testament I read a prophecy that in the last days a House of the Lord would be established in the mountains and all nations would flow unto it. Many people would go to hear the word of God and be taught of His ways. Isa. 2: 2-3 "And it shall come to pass in the last days, that the mountain of the Lord's house shall be established in the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow unto it. And many people shall go and say, Come ye, and let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem."

In the Book of Mormon I read about Ammon glorying in the Lord and rejoicing in the miracle of so many of his brethren being loosed from the pains of hell through the Lord's redeeming love. Alma 26: 13-16 "Behold, how many thousands of our brethren has he loosed from the pains of hell; and they are brought to sing redeeming love, and this because of the power of his word which is in us, therefore have we not great reason to rejoice? Yea, we have reason to praise him forever, for he is the Most High God, and has loosed our brethren from the chains of hell. Yea, they were encircled about with everlasting darkness and destruction; but behold, he has brought them into his everlasting light, yea, into everlasting salvation; and they are encircled about with the matchless bounty of his love; yea, and we have been instruments in his hands of doing this great and marvelous work. Therefore, let us glory, yea, we will glory in the Lord; yea, we will rejoice, for our joy is full; yea, we will praise our God forever. Behold, who can glory too much in the Lord? Yea, who can say too much of his great power, and of his mercy, and of his long-suffering towards the children of men? Behold, I say unto you, I cannot say the smallest part which I feel."

A verse from a thought booklet tells us that every living thing and the breath of all mankind is in the Lord's hand. Every breath we take is a gift from God. Job 12: 10 "In whose hand is the soul of every living thing, and the breath of all mankind."

Daily Thoughts

In the Old Testament I read that we need to cease to do evil and put it away from us. We need to do righteous things--helping the widows and orphans and those oppressed. If we're willing and obedient our sins will be washed away, we'll be made clean, and we'll receive the blessings of the Lord. But if we refuse to do these things and rebel, we'll receive punishment. Isa. 1: 16-20 "Wash you, make you clean; put away the evil of your doings from before mine eyes; cease to do evil; Learn to do well; seek judgment, relieve the oppressed, judge the fatherless, plead for the widow. Come now, and let us reason together, saith the Lord: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool. If ye be willing and obedient, ye shall eat the good of the land: But if ye refuse and rebel, ye shall be devoured with the sword: for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it."

Yesterday we read about how the Anti Nephi Lehies buried their swords as a testimony that they would no longer shed the blood of others. Indeed, this was put to the test as we read today about how they suffered their lives to be taken rather than lift up their swords. However, those who lost their lives touched the hearts of those who killed them and they became converted. In fact more people came unto the Lord than who lost their lives. And those who lost their lives were righteous people and were saved. Alma 24: 21-26 "Now when the people saw that they were coming against them they went out to meet them, and prostrated themselves before them to the earth, and began to call on the name of the Lord; and thus they were in this attitude when the Lamanites began to fall upon them, and began to slay them with the sword. And thus without meeting any resistance, they did slay a thousand and five of them; and we know that they are blessed, for they have gone to dwell with their God. Now when the Lamanites saw that their brethren would not flee from the sword, neither would they turn aside to the right hand or to the left, but that they would lie down and perish, and praised God even in the very act of perishing under the sword— Now when the Lamanites saw this they did forbear from slaying them; and there were many whose hearts had swollen in them for those of their brethren who had fallen under the sword, for they repented of the things which they had done. And it came to pass that they threw down their weapons of war, and they would not take them again, for they were stung for the murders which they had committed; and they came down even as their brethren, relying upon the mercies of those whose arms were lifted to slay them. And it came to pass that the people of God were joined that day by more than the number who had been slain; and those who had been slain were righteous people, therefore we have no reason to doubt but what they were saved."

A verse with a thought booklet tells us that we should not rejoice over the misfortunes of others or gloat when bad things happen to our enemies. We should follow the example of Jesus and live a higher law. Even when He was being crucified, He asked His Father to forgive them for they knew not what they did. Obadiah 1:12 "But thou shouldest not have looked on the day of thy brother in the day that he became a stranger; neither shouldest thou have rejoiced over the children of Judah in the day of their destruction; neither shouldest thou have spoken proudly in the day of distress."

Daily Thoughts

In the Old Testament I read about the wickedness and rebelliousness of Israel. Isa. 1: 2-4 "Hear, O heavens, and give ear, O earth: for the Lord hath spoken, I have nourished and brought up children, and they have rebelled against me. The ox knoweth his owner, and the ass his master's crib: but Israel doth not know, my people doth not consider. Ah sinful nation, a people laden with iniquity, a seed of evildoers, children that are corrupters: they have forsaken the Lord, they have provoked the Holy One of Israel unto anger, they are gone away backward."

In the Book of Mormon I read about how the Anti Nephi Lehies made a covenant not to shed the blood of others anymore and buried their swords as a testimony of their covenant. Alma 24: 15-19 "Oh, how merciful is our God! And now behold, since it has been as much as we could do to get our stains taken away from us, and our swords are made bright, let us hide them away that they may be kept bright, as a testimony to our God at the last day, or at the day that we shall be brought to stand before him to be judged, that we have not stained our swords in the blood of our brethren since he imparted his word unto us and has made us clean thereby. And now, my brethren, if our brethren seek to destroy us, behold, we will hide away our swords, yea, even we will bury them deep in the earth, that they may be kept bright, as a testimony that we have never used them, at the last day; and if our brethren destroy us, behold, we shall go to our God and shall be saved. And now it came to pass that when the king had made an end of these sayings, and all the people were assembled together, they took their swords, and all the weapons which were used for the shedding of man's blood, and they did bury them up deep in the earth. And this they did, it being in their view a testimony to God, and also to men, that they never would use weapons again for the shedding of man's blood; and this they did, vouching and covenanting with God, that rather than shed the blood of their brethren they would give up their own lives; and rather than take away from a brother they would give unto him; and rather than spend their days in idleness they would labor abundantly with their hands. And thus we see that, when these Lamanites were brought to believe and to know the truth, they were firm, and would suffer even unto death rather than commit sin; and thus we see that they buried their weapons of peace, or they buried the weapons of war, for peace."

Some verses with a thought booklet tell about how the disciples of Jesus rebuked the little children who came to Him, but Jesus told them not to forbid the children from coming unto Him, for of such was the Kingdom of God. He then took time with the children and blessed them. Maybe the disciples thougtht Jesus was too tired or too busy to want to be bothered with the children, but they were wrong. Jesus loved the little children and rejoiced in their innocense and teachability. Do we need to examine our own lives and see if we have lost our childlikeness--and figure out how we can get it back? Mark 10: 13-16 "And they brought young children to him, that he should touch them: and his disciples rebuked those that brought them. But when Jesus saw it, he was much displeased, and said unto them, Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God. Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, he shall not enter therein. And he took them up in his arms, put his hands upon them, and blessed them."

Daily Thoughts

In the Old Testament we read that the whole duty of man is to fear God and keep His commandments. God will judge us for every work and every secret thing--whether it be good or evil. Eccl. 12: 13-14 "Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man. For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil."

In the Book of Mormon I read about how Aaron tried to preach to the people from the scriptures, trying to teach them about the Atonement of Christ and the resurrection of the dead. However, they became angry with him, mocked him, and would not hear his words. It's a sad fact that this is often how wicked people react when someone tries to teach them the Word of God. They refuse to listen and persecute or even kill the messenger. Alma 21: 9-10 "Now Aaron began to open the scriptures unto them concerning the coming of Christ, and also concerning the resurrection of the dead, and that there could be no redemption for mankind save it were through the death and sufferings of Christ, and the atonement of his blood. And it came to pass as he began to expound these things unto them they were angry with him, and began to mock him; and they would not hear the words which he spake."

Some verses with a thought booklet teach us that the mercy of the Lord is very great. He is slow to anger and eager to forgive our sins if we'll trust in Him. Just like a father loves his children, so the Lord loves us and has compassion for us. He can remove our sins so far from us, that it's like the distance between east and west--and what could be farther than that? Ps. 103: 8-13 "The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and plenteous in mercy. He will not always chide: neither will he keep his anger for ever. He hath not dealt with us after our sins; nor rewarded us according to our iniquities. For as the heaven is high above the earth, so great is his mercy toward them that fear him. As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us. Like as a father pitieth his children, so the Lord pitieth them that fear him."

Daily Thoughts

In the Old Testament we're told that wisdom is better than weapons of war, and that much harm can come from one evil person. All is takes is one sinner to destroy much good. Eccl. 9: 18 "Wisdom is better than weapons of war: but one sinner destroyeth much good."

In the Book of Mormon I read about how Ammon was lead by the Lord to Middoni to deliver his brethren out of prison; and the sad state they were in when he found them there. They had gone to preach to a very wicked and hardened people who had grossly mistreated them and finally bound them and cast them into prison. But the scriptures say they were patient in all their sufferings. How patient are we during our trials and tribulations? Alma 20: 29-30 "And when Ammon did meet them he was exceedingly sorrowful, for behold they were naked, and their skins were worn exceedingly because of being bound with strong cords. And they also had suffered hunger, thirst, and all kinds of afflictions; nevertheless they were patient in all their sufferings. And, as it happened, it was their lot to have fallen into the hands of a more hardened and a more stiffnecked people; therefore they would not hearken unto their words, and they had cast them out, and had smitten them, and had driven them from house to house, and from place to place, even until they had arrived in the land of Middoni; and there they were taken and cast into prison, and bound with strong cords, and kept in prison for many days, and were delivered by Lamoni and Ammon."

Some verses with a thought booklet tell us some of the calamities that will befall us in the last days; but the Lord will be our hope and give us strength. Joel 3: 15-16 "The sun and the moon shall be darkened, and the stars shall withdraw their shining. The Lord also shall roar out of Zion, and dutter his voice from Jerusalem; and the heavens and the earth shall shake: but the Lord will be the hope of his people, and the strength of the children of Israel."

Daily Thoughts

In the Old Testament I read that we should not be hasty to be angry because anger rests in the bosoms of fools. Eccl. 7: 9 "Be not hasty in thy spirit to be angry: for anger resteth in the bosom of fools."

In the Book of Mormon I read a couple of verses that bring up an interesting point--that when Lamoni taught the doctrines to the people that Ammon had taught him, as many as heard him were converted and believed. However, many would not hear his words and went on their way. Isn't it sad that some people turn away from the truth and refuse to hear it? We need to make sure we don't do this. Do we read our scriptures every day? Do we attend church every Sunday and really listen to what is being said? Do we put aside whatever else we may have to do so we can watch all the sessions of general conference twice a year? Do we put hearing the Word of God at the top of our priority list? Let's make sure we're not turning away when we could be feasting on the Word of God. Alma 19: 31-32 "And he, immediately, seeing the contention among his people, went forth and began to rebuke them, and to teach them the words which he had heard from the mouth of Ammon; and as many as heard his words believed, and were converted unto the Lord. But there were many among them who would not hear his words; therefore they went their way."

A verse with a thought booklet tells us that young lions may suffer hunger, but if we seek the Lord, we won't want for any good thing. Ps. 34: 10 "The young lions do lack, and suffer hunger: but they that seek the Lord shall not want any good thing."

Daily Thoughts

In the Old Testament I read that we come into this world naked and with nothing, and that's the way we'll leave this world also. We can't take it with us! Eccl. 5: 15 "As he came forth of his mother's womb, naked shall he return to go as he came, and shall take nothing of his labour, which he may carry away in his hand."

In the Book of Mormon I read about how Ammon taught the gospel to King Lamoni who believed all his words and was converted. Alma 18: 33-41 "And king Lamoni said: I believe all these things which thou hast spoken. Art thou sent from God? Ammon said unto him: I am a man; and man in the beginning was created after the image of God, and I am called by his Holy Spirit to teach these things unto this people, that they may be brought to a knowledge of that which is just and true; And a portion of that Spirit dwelleth in me, which giveth me knowledge, and also power according to my faith and desires which are in God. Now when Ammon had said these words, he began at the creation of the world, and also the creation of Adam, and told him all the things concerning the fall of man, and rehearsed and laid before him the records and the holy scriptures of the people, which had been spoken by the prophets, even down to the time that their father, Lehi, left Jerusalem. And he also rehearsed unto them (for it was unto the king and to his servants) all the journeyings of their fathers in the wilderness, and all their sufferings with hunger and thirst, and their travail, and so forth. And he also rehearsed unto them concerning the rebellions of Laman and Lemuel, and the sons of Ishmael, yea, all their rebellions did he relate unto them; and he expounded unto them all the records and scriptures from the time that Lehi left Jerusalem down to the present time. But this is not all; for he expounded unto them the plan of redemption, which was prepared from the foundation of the world; and he also made known unto them concerning the coming of Christ, and all the works of the Lord did he make known unto them. And it came to pass that after he had said all these things, and expounded them to the king, that the king believed all his words. And he began to cry unto the Lord, saying: O Lord, have mercy; according to thy abundant mercy which thou hast had upon the people of Nephi, have upon me, and my people."

Some verses with a thought booklet talk about the great war and desolation that will precede the Second Coming of Christ. Are we prepared for that day? Sometimes there have been hurricane, volcano, flood, or tsunomi warnings in which most people left the areas that were in danger and were safe but a few stayed behind and were killed. We might think they were foolish for not heeding the warnings, but are WE heeding a much more important warning to be prepared for Christ's coming? Are we spiritually prepared? Have we repented of our sins? Are we living our lives so we're ready to meet the Lord? If not, we're being as foolish as the people who ignore warnings of impending physical disasters. Joel 2: 1-11 "Blow ye the trumpet in Zion, and sound an alarm in my holy mountain: let all the inhabitants of the land tremble: for the day of the Lord cometh, for it is nigh at hand; A day of darkness and of gloominess, a day of clouds and of thick darkness, as the morning spread upon the mountains: a great people and a strong; there hath not been ever the like, neither shall be any more after it, even to the years of many generations. A fire devoureth before them; and behind them a flame burneth: the land is as the garden of Eden before them, and behind them a desolate wilderness; yea, and nothing shall escape them. The appearance of them is as the appearance of horses; and as horsemen, so shall they run. Like the noise of chariots on the tops of mountains shall they leap, like the noise of a flame of fire that devoureth the stubble, as a strong people set in battle array. Before their face the people shall be much pained: all faces shall gather blackness. They shall run like mighty men; they shall climb the wall like men of war; and they shall march every one on his ways, and they shall not break their ranks: Neither shall one thrust another; they shall walk every one in his path: and when they fall upon the sword, they shall not be wounded. They shall run to and fro in the city; they shall run upon the wall, they shall climb up upon the houses; they shall enter in at the windows like a thief. The earth shall quake before them; the heavens shall tremble: the sun and the moon shall be dark, and the stars shall withdraw their shining: And the Lord shall utter his voice before his army: for his camp is very great: for he is strong that executeth his word: for the day of the Lord is great and very terrible; and who can abide it?"

Daily Thoughts

In the Old Testament I read that it is better not to make promises at all than make a promise and not keep it. We need to be very careful about what we agree to do because it's important to be a person of our word and fulfill whatever we've promised. Eccl. 5: 5 "Better is it that thou shouldest not vow, than that thou shouldest vow and not pay."

In the Book of Mormon I read the story of how Ammon was able to contend with a large number of men who had scattered the king's flocks. They were not afraid of him because they did not understand the Lord or know that the Lord was with him, but he was able to stand forth against them, killing some of them with a sling and cutting off the arms of all those who raised their arms against him. Those who witnessed this, carried all the arms to the king as a testimony of what had occurred. Alma 17: 35-39 "Therefore they did not fear Ammon, for they supposed that one of their men could slay him according to their pleasure, for they knew not that the Lord had promised Mosiah that he would deliver his sons out of their hands; neither did they know anything concerning the Lord; therefore they delighted in the destruction of their brethren; and for this cause they stood to scatter the flocks of the king. But Ammon stood forth and began to cast stones at them with his sling; yea, with mighty power he did sling stones amongst them; and thus he slew a certain number of them insomuch that they began to be astonished at his power; nevertheless they were angry because of the slain of their brethren, and they were determined that he should fall; therefore, seeing that they could not hit him with their stones, they came forth with clubs to slay him. But behold, every man that lifted his club to smite Ammon, he smote off their arms with his sword; for he did withstand their blows by smiting their arms with the edge of his sword, insomuch that they began to be astonished, and began to flee before him; yea, and they were not few in number; and he caused them to flee by the strength of his arm. Now six of them had fallen by the sling, but he slew none save it were their leader with his sword; and he smote off as many of their arms as were lifted against him, and they were not a few. And when he had driven them afar off, he returned and they watered their flocks and returned them to the pasture of the king, and then went in unto the king, bearing the arms which had been smitten off by the sword of Ammon, of those who sought to slay him; and they were carried in unto the king for a testimony of the things which they had done."

A verse with a thought booklet tells about how after a blind man was healed he declared that the one thing he knew was that even though he had been blind, he could now see. It is a wonderful miracle for a blind man to receive sight. But isn't it even more a miracle when someone who is spiritually blind begins to clearly see things of the Lord? Are we blind to the goodness of the Lord in our lives? Are we blind to things of the Spirit? Do we not acknowledge the Lord in our lives and see His hand in all things? If we don't see spiritual things, we need to turn to the Lord and allow Him to heal us of our spiritual blindness. John 9: 25 "He answered and said, Whether he be a sinner or no, I know not: one thing I know, that, whereas I was blind, now I see."

Daily Thoughts

In the Old Testament I read that two are better than one. If one falls into the ditch, the other one can life him out. Two can unite together to prevail against their enemies and give each other warmth when they sleep. Eccl. 4: 9-12 "Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labour. For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow: but woe to him that is alone when he falleth; for he hath not another to help him up. Again, if two lie together, then they have heat: but how can one be warm alone? And if one prevail against him, two shall withstand him; and a threefold cord is not quickly broken."

In the Book of Mormon I read about how Alma met up with the sons of Mosiah while he was journeying. And to his great joy, they were still his brethren in the Lord, having devoted themselves to missionary work, fasting, prayer, and studying the scriptures. Isn't it wonderful when we run into old friends we haven't seen in a long time and see that they're still faithful to the gospel and have grown strong in the Lord? Alma 17: 1-4 "And now it came to pass that as Alma was journeying from the land of Gideon southward, away to the land of Manti, behold, to his astonishment, he met with the sons of Mosiah journeying towards the land of Zarahemla. Now these sons of Mosiah were with Alma at the time the angel first appeared unto him; therefore Alma did rejoice exceedingly to see his brethren; and what added more to his joy, they were still his brethren in the Lord; yea, and they had waxed strong in the knowledge of the truth; for they were men of a sound understanding and they had searched the scriptures diligently, that they might know the word of God. But this is not all; they had given themselves to much prayer, and fasting; therefore they had the spirit of prophecy, and the spirit of revelation, and when they taught, they taught with power and authority of God. And they had been teaching the word of God *for the space of fourteen years among the Lamanites, having had much success in bringing many to the knowledge of the truth; yea, by the power of their words many were brought before the altar of God, to call on his name and confess their sins before him."

A verse with a thought booklet explains why sometimes we don't get what we pray for--we ask amiss, for things that are not right for us to have. God always answers our prayers but sometimes He has to answer "No" for our own good. So when we pray we need to look in our own hearts and ask ourselves what are real motives are for wanting the things we're asking for. Is it something that we really need? Something that will help build the Kingdom of God? Or is it something selfish to satisfy our own lusts? We need to put our priorities in order and ask for things that will further our spiritual life with the Lord. But even then we need to trust in the Lord and believe that He'll answer our prayers in the way that's best for us, even if we can't see the reasons behind it. James 4: 3 "Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts."

Daily Thoughts

In the Old Testament I read that to everything there is a season and a time for every purpose under heaven. Eccl. 3: 1-8 "To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven: A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted; A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance;5 A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; A time to get, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away; A time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak; A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace."

In the Book of Mormon I read about the destruction of the people of Ammonihah because of their wickedness. They had boasted about how their city could not be destroyed because of its greatness. But in one day it was left desolate. What men can do is so insignificant compared to what God can do. Let's never become haughty and so proud that we think we can be self sufficient and don't need God's help in our lives. His power is so great that He can destroy mighty cities--or help us overcome mighty problems in our lives if we'll but turn to Him. Alma 16: 9-11 "And thus ended the eleventh year of the judges, the Lamanites having been driven out of the land, and the people of Ammonihah were destroyed; yea, every living soul of the Ammonihahites was destroyed, and also their great city, which they said God could not destroy, because of its greatness. But behold, in one day it was left desolate; and the carcases were mangled by dogs and wild beasts of the wilderness. Nevertheless, after many days their dead bodies were heaped up upon the face of the earth, and they were covered with a shallow covering. And now so great was the scent thereof that the people did not go in to possess the land of Ammonihah for many years. And it was called Desolation of Nehors; for they were of the profession of Nehor, who were slain; and their lands remained desolate."

Some verses with a thought booklet recount how Jesus washed His disciples feet--a very humble act that a servant might perform. Then He admonished them that just like He had washed their feet, they should wash one another's feet. They should follow the example He had given to them and be servant to all. This is something we all should practice in our own lives, and if we do, we'll find happiness. John 13: 12-17 "So after he had washed their feet, and had taken his garments, and was set down again, he said unto them, Know ye what I have done to you? Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for so I am. If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another's feet. For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you. Verily, verily, I say unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord; neither he that is sent greater than he that sent him. If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them."

Daily Thoughts

In the Old Testament we read a description of a virtuous woman, how industrious, wise, and kind she is--her price is above rubies. Prov. 31: 10-31 "Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies. The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil. She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life.3 She seeketh wool, and flax, and worketh willingly with her hands. She is like the merchants' ships; she bringeth her food from afar. She ariseth also while it is yet night, and giveth meat to her household, and a portion to her maidens. She considereth a field, and buyeth it: with the fruit of her hands she planteth a vineyard. She girdeth her loins with strength, and strengtheneth her arms. She perceiveth that her merchandise is good: her candle goeth not out by night. She layeth her hands to the spindle, and her hands hold the distaff. She stretcheth out her hand to the poor; yea, she reacheth forth her hands to the needy. She is not afraid of the snow for her household: for all her household are clothed with scarlet. She maketh herself coverings of tapestry; her clothing is silk and purple. Her husband is known in the gates, when he sitteth among the elders of the land. She maketh fine linen, and selleth it; and delivereth girdles unto the merchant. Strength and honour are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come. She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness. She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness. Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her. Many daughters have done virtuously, but thou excellest them all. Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised. Give her of the fruit of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates."

In the Book of Mormon we read about how Alma and Amulek were being mistreated in prison but the Lord delivered them in a miraculous manner--shaking the earth until the prison walls fell down, killing everyone inside except for Alma and Amulek who were unhurt. The people witnessing this were understandably frightened. Alma 14: 23-29 "And it came to pass after they had thus suffered for many days, (and it was on the twelfth day, in the tenth month, in the tenth year of the reign of the judges over the people of Nephi) that the chief judge over the land of Ammonihah and many of their teachers and their lawyers went in unto the prison where Alma and Amulek were bound with cords. And the chief judge stood before them, and smote them again, and said unto them: If ye have the power of God deliver yourselves from these bands, and then we will believe that the Lord will destroy this people according to your words. And it came to pass that they all went forth and smote them, saying the same words, even until the last; and when the last had spoken unto them the power of God was upon Alma and Amulek, and they rose and stood upon their feet. And Alma cried, saying: How long shall we suffer these great afflictions, O Lord? O Lord, give us strength according to our faith which is in Christ, even unto deliverance. And they broke the cords with which they were bound; and when the people saw this, they began to flee, for the fear of destruction had come upon them. And it came to pass that so great was their fear that they fell to the earth, and did not obtain the outer door of the prison; and the earth shook mightily, and the walls of the prison were rent in twain, so that they fell to the earth; and the chief judge, and the lawyers, and priests, and teachers, who smote upon Alma and Amulek, were slain by the fall thereof. And Alma and Amulek came forth out of the prison, and they were not hurt; for the Lord had granted unto them power, according to their faith which was in Christ. And they straightway came forth out of the prison; and they were loosed from their bands; and the prison had fallen to the earth, and every soul within the walls thereof, save it were Alma and Amulek, was slain; and they straightway came forth into the city. Now the people having heard a great noise came running together by multitudes to know the cause of it; and when they saw Alma and Amulek coming forth out of the prison, and the walls thereof had fallen to the earth, they were struck with great fear, and fled from the presence of Alma and Amulek even as a goat fleeth with her young from two lions; and thus they did flee from the presence of Alma and Amulek."

A verse in a thought booklet tells about how Mary Magdalene saw Jesus but didn't realize that it was Him. The thought that went with this, written by Cheryl D. Wanner from McMinnville, Oregon says: My dog, Reggie, loves nothing more than a good scent on the ground. Being a beagle, he has a highly developed sense of smell and a bullheaded determination to follow his nose wherever it takes him. Sometimes he gets so focused on whatever he's tracking that he misses the very thing itself. Once he tracked the scent of our cat on the driveway while the cat sat in plain sight watching him. He'll even ignore a dog in somebody's yard or on the road in favor of the one he smells on the ground. So often we, like Reggie, get so intent on what's under our noses that we don't see God standing in front of us, waiting to help us, to love us, to show us the way to Him or how to better serve others. It's God we are truly looking for. All we have to do is look up and see. Lord, ehlp me not get so caught up in the details of life or even my service to You that I miss the very One Im looking for. John 20: 14 " And when she had thus said, she turned herself back, and saw Jesus standing, and knew not that it was Jesus."

Daily Thoughts

In the Old Testament it says that where there is no vision the people perish--a good reason why we need continual revelation today. Those who keep the commandments are happy. Prov. 29: 18 "Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keepeth the law, happy is he."

In the Book of Mormon I read about how some people believed the preaching of Alma and Amulek and repented of their sins, but most of the people reviled against them and sought to destroy them. They bound them with strong cords and took them before the chief judge. Zeezrom had repented of his sins and was greatly sorrowed by the evil his lying words had caused. But when he tried to tell the people that he was guilty and that Alma and Amulek were innocent and spoke the truth, they reviled against him also. Then they brought the women and children together, and the scriptures, and burned them with fire, making Alma and Amulke witness this awful scene. Can you imagine how horrible this would be to watch? Amulek wanted to exercise the power of God to stop this bloodshed, but Alma said he felt constrained by the Spirit from doing so. He said that the innocent people who were being martyred were being received by the Lord in glory and that the people who were killing them would have innocent blood witness against them at the last day. Alma 14: 1-4, 6-11 "And it came to pass after he had made an end of speaking unto the people many of them did believe on his words, and began to repent, and to search the scriptures. But the more part of them were desirous that they might destroy Alma and Amulek; for they were angry with Alma, because of the plainness of his words unto Zeezrom; and they also said that Amulek had lied unto them, and had reviled against their law and also against their lawyers and judges. And they were also angry with Alma and Amulek; and because they had testified so plainly against their wickedness, they sought to put them away privily. But it came to pass that they did not; but they took them and bound them with strong cords, and took them before the chief judge of the land. And it came to pass that Zeezrom was astonished at the words which had been spoken; and he also knew concerning the blindness of the minds, which he had caused among the people by his lying words; and his soul began to be harrowed up under a consciousness of his own guilt; yea, he began to be encircled about by the pains of hell. And it came to pass that he began to cry unto the people, saying: Behold, I am guilty, and these men are spotless before God. And he began to plead for them from that time forth; but they reviled him, saying: Art thou also possessed with the devil? And they spit upon him, and cast him out from among them, and also all those who believed in the words which had been spoken by Alma and Amulek; and they cast them out, and sent men to cast stones at them. And they brought their wives and children together, and whosoever believed or had been taught to believe in the word of God they caused that they should be cast into the fire; and they also brought forth their records which contained the holy scriptures, and cast them into the fire also, that they might be burned and destroyed by fire. And it came to pass that they took Alma and Amulek, and carried them forth to the place of martyrdom, that they might witness the destruction of those who were consumed by fire. And when Amulek saw the pains of the women and children who were consuming in the fire, he also was pained; and he said unto Alma: How can we witness this awful scene? Therefore let us stretch forth our hands, and exercise the power of God which is in us, and save them from the flames. But Alma said unto him: The Spirit constraineth me that I must not stretch forth mine hand; for behold the Lord receiveth them up unto himself, in glory; and he doth suffer that they may do this thing, or that the people may do this thing unto them, according to the hardness of their hearts, that the judgments which he shall exercise upon them in his wrath may be just; and the blood of the innocent shall stand as a witness against them, yea, and cry mightily against them at the last day."

A verse with a thought booklet admonishes us to seek out the book of the Lord and read. Isa. 34: 16 "Seek ye out of the book of the Lord, and read: no one of these shall fail, none shall want her mate: for my mouth it hath commanded, and his spirit it hath gathered them."

Daily Thoughts

In the Old Testament it says that a wise man trying to contend with a foolish man is a no-win situation--whether he rages or laughs, there is no rest. Sometimes it's best to just walk away from argumentative "fools" because there is no use in trying to reason with unreasonable people. Prov. 29: 9 "If a wise man contendeth with a foolish man, whether he rage or laugh, there is no rest."

In the Book of Mormon I read that if we harden our hearts against the word of God, we'll receive a lesser portion of the word until we know nothing concerning the mysteries of God. However, if we don't harden our hearts, we'll be given more of the Word of God until we know the mysteries in full. We'lll not only be judged by our actions and words, but also by our thoughts and the intents of our hearts. Alma 12: 10-14 "And therefore, he that will harden his heart, the same receiveth the lesser portion of the word; and he that will not harden his heart, to him is given the greater portion of the word, until it is given unto him to know the mysteries of God until he know them in full. And they that will harden their hearts, to them is given the lesser portion of the word until they know nothing concerning his mysteries; and then they are taken captive by the devil, and led by his will down to destruction. Now this is what is meant by the chains of hell. And Amulek hath spoken plainly concerning death, and being raised from this mortality to a state of immortality, and being brought before the bar of God, to be judged according to our works. Then if our hearts have been hardened, yea, if we have hardened our hearts against the word, insomuch that it has not been found in us, then will our state be awful, for then we shall be condemned. For our words will condemn us, yea, all our works will condemn us; we shall not be found spotless; and our thoughts will also condemn us; and in this awful state we shall not dare to look up to our God; and we would fain be glad if we could command the rocks and the mountains to fall upon us to hide us from his presence."

A verse with a thought booklet tells us that the Lord reassured Jacob that He would be with Him and keep him in all places he would go, He would not leave him, and He would do what He said He would do for him. We likewise can know that God will not leave us. He'll be with us no matter where we go or what difficult circumstances we may find ourselves in. And He'll keep His promises to us. Gen. 28: 15 "And, behold, I am with thee, and will keep thee in all places whither thou goest, and will bring thee again into this land; for I will not leave thee, until I have done that which I have spoken to thee of."

Daily Thoughts

In the Old Testament I read a verse that says when a righteous person reigns, the people rejoice but when the wicked rule, the people mourn. We need to be careful about who we elect to office. Prov. 29: 2 "When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice: but when the wicked beareth rule, the people mourn."

In the Book of Mormon I read about how a wicked man Zeezrom tried to bribe Amulek to deny the existence of God. However, he refused to do so and said that through the Spirit he knew that Zeezrom wouldn't have really given him the money anyway, but only desired to destroy him by making him deny the existence of God. He told Zeezrom that he would receive his just reward for his wickedness. All this made Zeezrom tremble under a consciousness of his own guilt. Alma then spoke to Zeezrom about how the devil laid clever plans to deceive people and bring them down to destruction. Zeezrom recognized that Alma and Amulek were able to discern his very thoughts according to the Spirit which was in them. Alma 11: 21-25; 12: 1-7 "And this Zeezrom began to question Amulek, saying: Will ye answer me a few questions which I shall ask you? Now Zeezrom was a man who was expert in the devices of the devil, that he might destroy that which was good; therefore, he said unto Amulek: Will ye answer the questions which I shall put unto you? And Amulek said unto him: Yea, if it be according to the Spirit of the Lord, which is in me; for I shall say nothing which is contrary to the Spirit of the Lord. And Zeezrom said unto him: Behold, here are six onties of silver, and all these will I give thee if thou wilt deny the existence of a Supreme Being. Now Amulek said: O thou child of hell, why tempt ye me? Knowest thou that the righteous yieldeth to no such temptations? Believest thou that there is no God? I say unto you, Nay, thou knowest that there is a God, but thou lovest that lucre more than him. And now thou hast lied before God unto me. Thou saidst unto me—Behold these six onties, which are of great worth, I will give unto thee—when thou hadst it in thy heart to retain them from me; and it was only thy desire that I should deny the true and living God, that thou mightest have cause to destroy me. And now behold, for this great evil thou shalt have thy reward. Now Alma, seeing that the words of Amulek had silenced Zeezrom, for he beheld that Amulek had caught him in his lying and deceiving to destroy him, and seeing that he began to tremble under a consciousness of his guilt, he opened his mouth and began to speak unto him, and to establish the words of Amulek, and to explain things beyond, or to unfold the scriptures beyond that which Amulek had done. Now the words that Alma spake unto Zeezrom were heard by the people round about; for the multitude was great, and he spake on this wise: Now Zeezrom, seeing that thou hast been taken in thy lying and craftiness, for thou hast not lied unto men only but thou hast lied unto God; for behold, he knows all thy thoughts, and thou seest that thy thoughts are made known unto us by his Spirit; And thou seest that we know that thy plan was a very subtle plan, as to the subtlety of the devil, for to lie and to deceive this people that thou mightest set them against us, to revile us and to cast us out— Now this was a plan of thine adversary, and he hath exercised his power in thee. Now I would that ye should remember that what I say unto thee I say unto all. And behold I say unto you all that this was a snare of the adversary, which he has laid to catch this people, that he might bring you into subjection unto him, that he might encircle you about with his chains, that he might chain you down to everlasting destruction, according to the power of his captivity. Now when Alma had spoken these words, Zeezrom began to tremble more exceedingly, for he was convinced more and more of the power of God; and he was also convinced that Alma and Amulek had a knowledge of him, for he was convinced that they knew the thoughts and intents of his heart; for power was given unto them that they might know of these things according to the spirit of prophecy."

Some scriptures with a thought booklet tell us that we should continue in the Word if we are truly to be the Lord's disciples. And we will know the truth and the truth will make us free. John 8: 31-32 "Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free."

Daily Thoughts

In the Old Testament it says that if we give to the poor, we won't lack, but if we hide our eyes and refuse to see the needs of others, we'll be cursed. Prov. 28: 27 "He that giveth unto the poor shall not lack: but he that hideth his eyes shall have many a curse."

In the Book of Mormon I read about the conversion of Amulek and how he had hardened his heart against the things of God and rebelled against him but then an angel came to him and commanded him to provide food and shelter for Alma. He testified that Alma was sent from God and spoke the truth. Alma 10: 4-10 "And behold, I am also a man of no small reputation among all those who know me; yea, and behold, I have many kindreds and friends, and I have also acquired much riches by the hand of my industry. Nevertheless, after all this, I never have known much of the ways of the Lord, and his mysteries and marvelous power. I said I never had known much of these things; but behold, I mistake, for I have seen much of his mysteries and his marvelous power; yea, even in the preservation of the lives of this people. Nevertheless, I did harden my heart, for I was called many times and I would not hear; therefore I knew concerning these things, yet I would not know; therefore I went on rebelling against God, in the wickedness of my heart, even until the fourth day of this seventh month, which is in the tenth year of the reign of the judges. As I was journeying to see a very near kindred, behold an angel of the Lord appeared unto me and said: Amulek, return to thine own house, for thou shalt feed a prophet of the Lord; yea, a holy man, who is a chosen man of God; for he has fasted many days because of the sins of this people, and he is an hungered, and thou shalt receive him into thy house and feed him, and he shall bless thee and thy house; and the blessing of the Lord shall rest upon thee and thy house. And it came to pass that I obeyed the voice of the angel, and returned towards my house. And as I was going thither I found the man whom the angel said unto me: Thou shalt receive into thy house—and behold it was this same man who has been speaking unto you concerning the things of God. And the angel said unto me he is a holy man; wherefore I know he is a holy man because it was said by an angel of God.0 And again, I know that the things whereof he hath testified are true; for behold I say unto you, that as the Lord liveth, even so has he sent his angel to make these things manifest unto me; and this he has done while this Alma hath dwelt at my house."

A verse with a thought booklet reminds us that when we've been converted we need to strenghten our brethren. This goes right along with what we just read in the Book of Mormon. After Amulek was converted, he went about preaching to other people and trying to help them find the gospel as well. When we've found the gospel in our lives, we should want to share it with others so they can receive the wonderful blessings that we've received. Luke 22: 32 "But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not: and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren."

Daily Thoughts

In the Old Testament I read that if we're righteous we can be bold and confident, but the wicked flee even when no one is after them. If we're doing something wrong, it can indeed make us paranoid and keep us looking over our shoulder in fear. But if our life is on the path it should be, we have nothing to fear. Prov. 28: 1 "The wicked flee when no man pursueth: but the righteous are bold as a lion."

In the Book of Mormon I read about how we will all be judged according to our works. If we have been righteous, we will reap salvation through the power and deliverance of Jesus Christ. But if we have been evil, we'll reap damnation according to the power and captivation of the devil. The choice is ours! Alma 9: 28 "Therefore, prepare ye the way of the Lord, for the time is at hand that all men shall reap a reward of their works, according to that which they have been—if they have been righteous they shall reap the salvation of their souls, according to the power and deliverance of Jesus Christ; and if they have been evil they shall reap the damnation of their souls, according to the power and captivation of the devil."

A verse with a thought booklet tells us that Jesus always did the things that pleased His Father and His Father was with Him and did not leave Him alone. Likewise, if we do what pleases the Lord, He will ever be with us and not leave us alone. John 8: 29 "And he that sent me is with me: the Father hath not left me alone; for I do always those things that please him."

Daily Thoughts

In the Old Testament we're told not to boast about ourselves, but if there's anything good to say about ourselves, let other people speak it. Prov. 27: 1-2 "Boast not thyself of to morrow; for thou knowest not what a day may bring forth. Let another man apraise thee, and not thine own mouth; a stranger, and not thine own lips."

In the Book of Mormon I read about how Amulek received Alma into his house and fed him. The Lord commanded Alma to go forth among the people and cry repentance unto them, even though they had previously refused to listen to him and had cast him out. But he went forth again, taking Amulek with him, and cried repentance unto the people, being filled with the Holy Ghost. How difficult would that be to return to a people who had already cast you out and try to preach to them once again? Sometimes the Lord asks us to do difficult things that we'd really rather not do, but if we go forth with willingness, He'll be there with us and help us. And sometimes He sends people to help us, right when we need them, just like He sent Amulek to Alma. Alma 8: 21-30 "And it came to pass that the man received him into his house; and the man was called Amulek; and he brought forth bread and meat and set before Alma. And it came to pass that Alma ate bread and was filled; and he blessed Amulek and his house, and he gave thanks unto God. And after he had eaten and was filled he said unto Amulek: I am Alma, and am the high priest over the church of God throughout the land. And behold, I have been called to preach the word of God among all this people, according to the spirit of revelation and prophecy; and I was in this land and they would not receive me, but they cast me out and I was about to set my back towards this land forever. But behold, I have been commanded that I should turn again and prophesy unto this people, yea, and to testify against them concerning their iniquities. And now, Amulek, because thou hast fed me and taken me in, thou art blessed; for I was an hungered, for I had fasted many days. And Alma tarried many days with Amulek before he began to preach unto the people. And it came to pass that the people did wax more gross in their iniquities. And the word came to Alma, saying: Go; and also say unto my servant Amulek, go forth and prophesy unto this people, saying—Repent ye, for thus saith the Lord, except ye repent I will visit this people in mine anger; yea, and I will not turn my fierce anger away. And Alma went forth, and also Amulek, among the people, to declare the words of God unto them; and they were filled with the Holy Ghost."

Some verses with a thought booklet tell us that if we have faith in Christ and are rooted and grounded in love, we can know the love of Christ, which passes all knowledge, and be filled with the fulness of God. What marvelous promises these are! Eph. 3: 17-19 "That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God."
