In the Old Testament I read that Elijah would return before the great and dreadful day of the Lord to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children and the children to their fathers, lest the whole earth be smitten with a curse. Mal. 4: 5-6 "Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord: And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers, lest I come and smite the earth with a curse."
In the Pearl of Great Price I read about how Joseph Smith was persecuted for telling about the vision which he had seen. However, he knew that he had seen it and all the persecution in the world could not make him deny it. JS-H 1: 21-25 "Some few days after I had this vision, I happened to be in company with one of the Methodist preachers, who was very active in the before mentioned religious excitement; and, conversing with him on the subject of religion, I took occasion to give him an account of the vision which I had had. I was greatly surprised at his behavior; he treated my communication not only lightly, but with great contempt, saying it was all of the devil, that there were no such things as visions or revelations in these days; that all such things had ceased with the apostles, and that there would never be any more of them. I soon found, however, that my telling the story had excited a great deal of prejudice against me among professors of religion, and was the cause of great persecution, which continued to increase; and though I was an obscure boy, only between fourteen and fifteen years of age, and my circumstances in life such as to make a boy of no consequence in the world, yet men of high standing would take notice sufficient to excite the public mind against me, and create a bitter persecution; and this was common among all the sects—all united to persecute me. It caused me serious reflection then, and often has since, how very strange it was that an obscure boy, of a little over fourteen years of age, and one, too, who was doomed to the necessity of obtaining a scanty maintenance by his daily labor, should be thought a character of sufficient importance to attract the attention of the great ones of the most popular sects of the day, and in a manner to create in them a spirit of the most bitter persecution and reviling. But strange or not, so it was, and it was often the cause of great sorrow to myself. However, it was nevertheless a fact that I had beheld a vision. I have thought since, that I felt much like Paul, when he made his defense before King Agrippa, and related the account of the vision he had when he saw a light, and heard a voice; but still there were but few who believed him; some said he was dishonest, others said he was mad; and he was ridiculed and reviled. But all this did not destroy the reality of his vision. He had seen a vision, he knew he had, and all the persecution under heaven could not make it otherwise; and though they should persecute him unto death, yet he knew, and would know to his latest breath, that he had both seen a light and heard a voice speaking unto him, and all the world could not make him think or believe otherwise. So it was with me. I had actually seen a light, and in the midst of that light I saw two Personages, and they did in reality speak to me; and though I was hated and persecuted for saying that I had seen a vision, yet it was true; and while they were persecuting me, reviling me, and speaking all manner of evil against me falsely for so saying, I was led to say in my heart: Why persecute me for telling the truth? I have actually seen a vision; and who am I that I can withstand God, or why does the world think to make me deny what I have actually seen? For I had seen a vision; I knew it, and I knew that God knew it, and I could not deny it, neither dared I do it; at least I knew that by so doing I would offend God, and come under condemnation."
Some verses with a thought booklet tell about how wonderful it will be when there will be no more pain or death in the world, and God will wipe away all tears from our eyes. He will dwell with us and we will be His people. What a glorious day that will be! If we can overcome temptation and endure to the end, we will inherit all things. But the sinners and unbelievers will suffer the second death, and burn with fire and brimstone. What a contrast! All the more reason to make sure our lives are in tune with the will of the Lord. Rev. 21: 3-4, 7-8 "And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God. And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away. He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son. But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death."

Daily Thoughts
In the Old Testament I read that the day will come when the wicked will be burned and the proud will be as stubble. Mal. 4: 1-3 "For, behold, the day cometh, that shall burn as an oven; and all the proud, yea, and all that do wickedly, shall be stubble: and the day that cometh shall burn them up, saith the Lord of hosts, that it shall leave them neither root nor branch. But unto you that fear my name shall the Sun of righteousness arise with healing in his wings; and ye shall go forth, and grow up as calves of the stall. And ye shall tread down the wicked; for they shall be ashes under the soles of your feet in the day that I shall do this, saith the Lord of hosts."
In the Pearl of Great Price I read the story of how Joseph Smith was confused by all the fighting and contentions among the various religions of his day. He had no idea which church was right or which he should join. While studying the scriptures he came across a passage that told him that if he lacked wisdom, he should pray. So he went to a grove of trees to do so. As a result of this prayer, he was visited by God the Father and His Son Jesus Christ who told him to join none of the churches for they were all wrong. They professed to draw near to the Lord with their words, but their hearts were far from Him. JS-H 1: 5-6, 9-19 "Some time in the second year after our removal to Manchester, there was in the place where we lived an unusual excitement on the subject of religion. It commenced with the Methodists, but soon became general among all the sects in that region of country. Indeed, the whole district of country seemed affected by it, and great multitudes united themselves to the different religious parties, which created no small stir and division amongst the people, some crying, "Lo, here!" and others, "Lo, there!" Some were contending for the Methodist faith, some for the Presbyterian, and some for the Baptist. For, notwithstanding the great love which the converts to these different faiths expressed at the time of their conversion, and the great zeal manifested by the respective clergy, who were active in getting up and promoting this extraordinary scene of religious feeling, in order to have everybody converted, as they were pleased to call it, let them join what sect they pleased; yet when the converts began to file off, some to one party and some to another, it was seen that the seemingly good feelings of both the priests and the converts were more pretended than real; for a scene of great confusion and bad feeling ensued—priest contending against priest, and convert against convert; so that all their good feelings one for another, if they ever had any, were entirely lost in a strife of words and a contest about opinions. My mind at times was greatly excited, the cry and tumult were so great and incessant. The Presbyterians were most decided against the Baptists and Methodists, and used all the powers of both reason and sophistry to prove their errors, or, at least, to make the people think they were in error. On the other hand, the Baptists and Methodists in their turn were equally zealous in endeavoring to establish their own tenets and disprove all others. In the midst of this war of words and tumult of opinions, I often said to myself: What is to be done? Who of all these parties are right; or, are they all wrong together? If any one of them be right, which is it, and how shall I know it? While I was laboring under the extreme difficulties caused by the contests of these parties of religionists, I was one day reading the Epistle of James, first chapter and fifth verse, which reads: If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. Never did any passage of scripture come with more power to the heart of man than this did at this time to mine. It seemed to enter with great force into every feeling of my heart. I reflected on it again and again, knowing that if any person needed wisdom from God, I did; for how to act I did not know, and unless I could get more wisdom than I then had, I would never know; for the teachers of religion of the different sects understood the same passages of scripture so differently as to destroy all confidence in settling the question by an appeal to the Bible. At length I came to the conclusion that I must either remain in darkness and confusion, or else I must do as James directs, that is, ask of God. I at length came to the determination to "ask of God," concluding that if he gave wisdom to them that lacked wisdom, and would give liberally, and not upbraid, I might venture. So, in accordance with this, my determination to ask of God, I retired to the woods to make the attempt. It was on the morning of a beautiful, clear day, early in the spring of eighteen hundred and twenty. It was the first time in my life that I had made such an attempt, for amidst all my anxieties I had never as yet made the attempt to pray vocally. After I had retired to the place where I had previously designed to go, having looked around me, and finding myself alone, I kneeled down and began to offer up the desires of my heart to God. I had scarcely done so, when immediately I was seized upon by some power which entirely overcame me, and had such an astonishing influence over me as to bind my tongue so that I could not speak. Thick darkness gathered around me, and it seemed to me for a time as if I were doomed to sudden destruction. But, exerting all my powers to call upon God to deliver me out of the power of this enemy which had seized upon me, and at the very moment when I was ready to sink into despair and abandon myself to destruction—not to an imaginary ruin, but to the power of some actual being from the unseen world, who had such marvelous power as I had never before felt in any being—just at this moment of great alarm, I saw a pillar of light exactly over my head, above the brightness of the sun, which descended gradually until it fell upon me. It no sooner appeared than I found myself delivered from the enemy which held me bound. When the light rested upon me I saw two Personages, whose brightness and glory defy all description, standing above me in the air. One of them spake unto me, calling me by name and said, pointing to the other—This is My Beloved Son. Hear Him! My object in going to inquire of the Lord was to know which of all the sects was right, that I might know which to join. No sooner, therefore, did I get possession of myself, so as to be able to speak, than I asked the Personages who stood above me in the light, which of all the sects was right (for at this time it had never entered into my heart that all were wrong)—and which I should join. I was answered that I must join none of them, for they were all wrong; and the Personage who addressed me said that all their creeds were an abomination in his sight; that those professors were all corrupt; that: "they draw near to me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me, they teach for doctrines the commandments of men, having a form of godliness, but they deny the power thereof."
Some verses with a thought booklet tell us to submit ourselves to God and resist the devil. If we draw near to God, He will draw near to us, and the devil will flee from us. God can cleanse us from sin and purify our hearts if we'll allow Him to. James 4: 7-8 "Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded."

Daily Thoughts
In the Old Testament I read that the Lord hearkens to those who fear Him and keeps them in a book of
remembrance. They are His, like jewels that He will spare. He can discern between the rightous who serve Him
and the wicked who do not serve Him. Mal. 3: 16-18 "Then they that feared the Lord spake often one to another:
and the Lord hearkened, and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before him for them that feared the Lord, and that thought upon his name. And they shall be mine, saith the Lord of hosts, in that day when I make up my jewels; and I will spare them, as a man spareth his own son that serveth him. Then shall ye return, and discern
between the righteous and the wicked, between him that serveth God and him that serveth him not."
In the Pearl of Great Price I read about the great tribulation and calamities that would befall the children of men in the last days. There would be wars and earthquakes and famines. But then Christ will come. Those who treasure up the Word of God will not be deceived. JS-M 1: 28-37 "And they shall hear of wars, and rumors of wars. Behold I speak for mine elect's sake; for nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places. And again, because iniquity shall abound, the love of men shall wax cold; but he that shall not be overcome, the same shall be saved. And again, this Gospel of the Kingdom shall be preached in all the world, for a witness unto all nations, and then shall the end come, or the destruction of the wicked; And again shall the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, be fulfilled. And immediately after the tribulation of those days, the sun shall be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of heaven shall be shaken. Verily, I say unto you, this generation, in which these things shall be shown forth, shall not pass away until all I have told you shall be fulfilled. Although, the days will come, that heaven and earth shall pass away; yet my words shall not pass away, but all shall be fulfilled. And, as I said before, after the tribulation of those days, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken, then shall appear the sign of the Son of Man in heaven, and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn; and they shall see the Son of Man coming in the clouds of heaven, with power and great glory; And whoso treasureth up my word, shall not be deceived, for the Son of Man shall come, and he shall send his angels before him with the great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together the remainder of his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other."
Some verses with a thought booklet show us how quickly a wicked nation and all its riches can be destroyed. God will take vengeance against sinners and there is no security in money or wordly power. Rev. 18: 16-20 "And saying, Alas, alas, that great city, that was clothed in fine linen, and purple, and scarlet, and decked with gold, and precious stones, and pearls! For in one hour so great riches is come to nought. And every shipmaster, and all the company in ships, and sailors, and as many as trade by sea, stood afar off, And cried when they saw the smoke of her burning, saying, What city is like unto this great city! And they cast dust on their heads, and cried, weeping and wailing, saying, Alas, alas, that great city, wherein were made rich all that had ships in the sea by reason of her costliness! for in one hour is she made desolate. Rejoice over her, thou heaven, and ye holy apostles and prophets; for God hath avenged you on her."

Daily Thoughts
In the Old Testament I read that those who say that serving God is vain and not of profit are stout in speaking against the Lord. Mal. 3: 13-14 "Your words have been stout against me, saith the Lord. Yet ye say, What have we spoken so much against thee? Ye have said, It is vain to serve God: and what profit is it that we have kept his ordinance, and that we have walked mournfully before the Lord of hosts?"
In the Pearl of Great Price I read about the last days and how there would be false prophets and persecution of the righteous. However, those who will remain steadfast will be saved, and not be overcome. There is safety in keeping the commandments and staying on the right path. JS-M 1: 5-11 "And Jesus answered, and said unto them: Take heed that no man deceive you; For many shall come in my name, saying—I am Christ—and shall deceive many; Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you, and ye shall be hated of all nations, for my name's sake; And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another; And many false prophets shall arise, and shall deceive many; And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold; But he that remaineth steadfast and is not overcome, the same shall be saved."
Some scriptures with a thought booklet remind us of the importance of paying our tithing. If we don't, we're actually robbing God because this money belongs to Him. And if we do pay our tithes, we'll be richly blessed--so much so that the windows of heaven will pour our so many blessings that there won't be room to receive them. I've found this so true in my own life. As long as I've paid my tithing, the Lord has blessed me with what I need. All our resources belong to God. When we hoard them in a stingy way, our greed will reep the punishment we deserve. But when we're generous and giving, we'll find that the Lord blesses us with more. Mal. 3: 7-12 "Even from the days of your fathers ye are gone away from mine ordinances, and have not kept them. Return unto me, and I will return unto you, saith the Lord of hosts. But ye said, Wherein shall we return? Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings. Ye are cursed with a curse: for ye have robbed me, even this whole nation. Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it. And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, and he shall not destroy the fruits of your ground; neither shall your vine cast her fruit before the time in the field, saith the Lord of hosts. And all nations shall call you blessed: for ye shall be a delightsome land, saith the Lord of hosts."

Daily Thoughts
In the Old Testament we're told that if we'll return unto the Lord, He'll return unto us. If we don't pay our tithing, we're robbing God. But if we do offer up our tithes and offerings, we'll have so many blessings poured out upon us that there won't be room to receive them and the Lord will rebuke the devourer for our sakes. I've found wonderful blessings in my own life and those of people I know as the result of paying tithing. When we pay our tithing first, even if we don't know how we'll pay for other things, the Lord does indeed bless us with the necessities of life and miracles occur. Mal. 3: 8-11 "Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings. Ye are cursed with a curse: for ye have robbed me, even this whole nation. Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it. In the Pearl of Great Price we read that there were many noble and great souls in the pre-existence and they were
chosen, before they were born, to fulfill callings as leaders in this life. Abr. 3: 22-23 "Now the Lord had shown unto me, Abraham, the intelligences that were organized before the world was; and among all these there were many of the noble and great ones; And God saw these souls that they were good, and he stood in the midst of them, and he said: These I will make my rulers; for he stood among those that were spirits, and he saw that they were good; and he said unto me: Abraham, thou art one of them; thou wast chosen before thou wast born."
Some verses with a thought booklet warn us not to do good things for the sake of other people seeing us and
thinking highly of us. If that's what we're seeking for, we'll already have our reward from receiving this recognition
from men. But we should do our good deed in secret, and then we'll receive our reward from Heavenly Father.
It's not enough to just do the right things, but we need to have the right motivation in doing them. We need to look
into our own hearts. Do we have a sincere desire to please God and bless the lives of others? Or do we merely
want other people to think how wonderful we are for doing what we're doing? Matt. 6: 1-4 "Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven. Therefore when thou doest thine alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth: That thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly."

Daily Thoughts
In the Old Testament the question is asked, who will abide the day of the coming of the Lord? He shall refine and purify, like silver and gold are refined and purified. He will come in judgment and be a swift witness against the adulterers, sorcerers, false swearers, and those who oppress the widows and fatherless. Indeed, who will abide the day of His coming? Will it be us? Mal. 3: 2-6 "But who may abide the day of his coming? and who shall stand when he appeareth? for he is like a refiner's fire, and like fullers' soap: And he shall sit as a refiner and purifier of silver: and he shall purify the sons of Levi, and purge them as gold and silver, that they may offer unto the Lord an offering in righteousness. Then shall the offering of Judah and Jerusalem be pleasant unto the Lord, as in the days of old, and as in former years. And I will come near to you to judgment; and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, and against the adulterers, and against false swearers, and against those that oppress the hireling in his wages, the widow, and the fatherless, and that turn aside the stranger from his right, and fear not me, saith the Lord of hosts. For I am the Lord, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed."
In the Pearl of Great Price I read about how the Lord talked to Abraham face to face and showed unto him all the creations that He had made. Can you imagine what a marvelous manifestation this must have been? Abr. 3: 11-12 "Thus I, Abraham, talked with the Lord, face to face, as one man talketh with another; and he told me of the works which his hands had made; And he said unto me: My son, my son (and his hand was stretched out), behold I will show you all these. And he put his hand upon mine eyes, and I saw those things which his hands had made, which were many; and they multiplied before mine eyes, and I could not see the end thereof."
A verse from a thought booklet tells us to trust in the Lord at all times and pour out our hearts before Him. Ps. 62: 8 "Trust in him at all times; ye people, pour out your heart before him: God is a refuge for us. Selah."

Daily Thoughts
In the Old Testament I read that those who depart out of the right way and cause others to stumble are contemptible and base. We need to keep our covenants! And we need to make sure we don't drag other people down. Mal. 2: 8-9 "But ye are departed out of the way; ye have caused many to stumble at the law; ye have corrupted the covenant of Levi, saith the Lord of hosts. Therefore have I also made you contemptible and base before all the people, according as ye have not kept my ways, but have been partial in the law."
In the Pearl of Great Price we're told how obedient the creations of God are to Him. The wind and the sea and the fire all obey Him. If He tells a mountain to depart, it does so instantly. If all these creations of God obey Him so well, why can't we do so also? Abr. 2: 7 "For I am the Lord thy God; I dwell in heaven; the earth is my footstool; I stretch my hand over the sea, and it obeys my voice; I cause the wind and the fire to be my chariot; I say to the mountains—Depart hence—and behold, they are taken away by a whirlwind, in an instant, suddenly."
Some scriptures with a thought booklet tell us that the righteous will be rewarded and the wicked punished. What we do and how we live our lives have consequences! Isa. 3: 10-11 "Say ye to the righteous, that it shall be well with him: for they shall eat the fruit of their doings. Woe unto the wicked! it shall be ill with him: for the reward of his hands shall be given him."

Daily Thoughts
In the Old Testament I read that those who refuse to hear or give glory to the name of the Lord will be cursed instead of blessed. Mal. 2: 2 "If ye will not hear, and if ye will not lay it to heart, to give glory unto my name, saith the Lord of hosts, I will even send a curse upon you, and I will curse your blessings: yea, I have cursed them already, because ye do not lay it to heart."
In the Pearl of Great Price I read about how Abraham was delivered from the hands of the wicked who intended to sacrifice him to their gods. He was unloosed from his bands when he prayed unto the Lord. We may not find ourselves being tied to an altar and sacrificed to idols, but we may find ourselves in difficult circumstances from which we need deliverance. Like Abraham, we can cry out to the Lord and He will hear us. Abr. 1: 15 "And as they lifted up their hands upon me, that they might offer me up and take away my life, behold, I lifted up my voice unto the Lord my God, and the Lord hearkened and heard, and he filled me with the vision of the Almighty, and the angel of his presence stood by me, and immediately unloosed my bands;"
Some verses with a thought booklet tell us that we need to be prepared at all times for the coming of Christ because no one knows what day that will be. Life will just be going on as usual when it happens and it will take those who are not prepared unawares. Let's not procrastinate the day of our repentance because we may wait until it's too late. Since we don't know when that day will be, we need to prepare NOW. Matt. 24: 36-44 "But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only. But as the days of Noe were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark, And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. Then shall two be in the field; the one shall be taken, and the other left. Two women shall be grinding at the mill; the one shall be taken, and the other left. Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come. But know this, that if the goodman of the house had known in what watch the thief would come, he would have watched, and would not have suffered his house to be broken up. Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh."

Daily Thoughts
In the Old Testament I read that the Lord will smite all the earth with a plague and all the people who fought against Jerusalem would have their flesh consumed away while they stand upon their feet, and their eyes and tongues would consume away. What a terrible end to the wicked! Zech. 14: 12 "And this shall be the plague wherewith the Lord will smite all the people that have fought against Jerusalem; Their flesh shall consume away while they stand upon their feet, and their eyes shall consume away in their holes, and their tongue shall consume away in their mouth."
In the Pearl of Great Price I read some verses that tell us that Noah tried to call the people to repentance, but they would not listen to him--refusing to repent or be baptized. Moses 8: 20, 22-24 "And it came to pass that Noah called upon the children of men that they should repent; but they hearkened not unto his words; And God saw that the wickedness of men had become great in the earth; and every man was lifted up in the imagination of the thoughts of his heart, being only evil continually. And it came to pass that Noah continued his preaching unto the people, saying: Hearken, and give heed unto my words; Believe and repent of your sins and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, even as our fathers, and ye shall receive the Holy Ghost, that ye may have all things made manifest; and if ye do not this, the floods will come in upon you; nevertheless they hearkened not."
Some scriptures with a thought booklet tell us to lay up treasures for ourselves in heaven, rather than treasures upon earth which moths and rust can destroy or theives can steal. We should set our hearts on things of an eternal nature instead of worldly wealth which has no lasting value in the eternal scheme of things. Matt. 6: 19-21 "Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also."

Daily Thoughts
In the Old Testament I read a verse that says that the Lord will reign as king over all the earth and there will only be one Lord. Zech. 14: 9 "And the Lord shall be king over all the earth: in that day shall there be one Lord, and his name one."
In the Pearl of Great Price I read that Enoch was shown the coming of Christ in the Latter days and also that before that day there would be great tribulations among the wicked. Men's hearts would fail them as they looked forth with fear toward the judgments of God. Let's make sure that we're prepared for this day so that we won't need to fear. Moses 7: 65-66 "And it came to pass that Enoch saw the day of the coming of the Son of Man, in the last days, to dwell on the earth in righteousness for the space of a thousand years; But before that day he saw great tribulations among the wicked; and he also saw the sea, that it was troubled, and men's hearts failing them, looking forth with fear for the judgments of the Almighty God, which should come upon the wicked.
A verse with a thought booklet tells us that the Lord doesn't judge us by how tall we are or what we look like, but rather on our heart. He doesn't see us the way other people do (by our outward appearance). He sees us for what we are on the inside. We need to be less hasty in judging others by their appearance. Someone who may not look like much may actually have a heart of gold. I learned this lesson more than 30 years ago as a newlywed when I was in Tucson with my new husband. It was late at night and we'd gotten a little lost and found ourself on the wrong side of town. I pulled into a park to turn around and ran over some glass (probably from empty booze bottles) and got a flat tire. We got out to look at the tire and discovered that this park was inhabited by homeless bums who were laying around drinking. My young husband had never changed a tire in his life and had no idea what to do. While we were trying to figure it out, one of the homeless bums proceeded to crawl over to us (he was too drunk to walk). I was scared to death of what he might try to do to us. But when he made it over to us, he proceeded to instruct my husband, step by step, in how to change the tire. He was too drunk to help, but was able to talk my husband through it. So this is how my husband learned to change a tire. To look at that man, I would have judged him harshly. But I was wrong. There was good in him. He saw a young couple having trouble and did what he could to help. 1 Sam. 16: 7 "But the Lord said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart."

Daily Thoughts
In the Old Testament I read that two thirds of the people will be cut off and die and one third will be brought through fire, refining them the way silver and gold are refined. They will call upon the name of the Lord and He will hear them. They will be His people and He will be their God. Zech. 13: 8-9 "And it shall come to pass, that in all the land, saith the Lord, two parts therein shall be cut off and die; but the third shall be left therein. And I will bring the third part through the fire, and will refine them as silver is refined, and will try them as gold is tried: they shall call on my name, and I will hear them: I will say, It is my people: and they shall say, The Lord is my God."
In the Pearl of Great Price I read about how Enoch asked the Lord why He was weeping, seeing that He was holy and had so many creations. The Lord showed him the wickedness of the people and how they were without affection, even though they'd been commanded to love one another. Seeing this broke God's heart and made Him weep. He loves us. When we sin, it hurts Him. He has so much compassion for us and He wants to bless us. Let's live our lives so we don't make Him weep over us and our sins. Moses 7: 28-33, 37, 40-41 "And it came to pass that the God of heaven looked upon the residue of the people, and he wept; and Enoch bore record of it, saying: How is it that the heavens weep, and shed forth their tears as the rain upon the mountains? And Enoch said unto the Lord: How is it that thou canst weep, seeing thou art holy, and from all eternity to all eternity? And were it possible that man could number the particles of the earth, yea, millions of earths like this, it would not be a beginning to the number of thy creations; and thy curtains are stretched out still; and yet thou art there, and thy bosom is there; and also thou art just; thou art merciful and kind forever; And thou hast taken Zion to thine own bosom, from all thy creations, from all eternity to all eternity; and naught but peace, justice, and truth is the habitation of thy throne; and mercy shall go before thy face and have no end; how is it thou canst weep? The Lord said unto Enoch: Behold these thy brethren; they are the workmanship of mine own hands, and I gave unto them their knowledge, in the day I created them; and in the Garden of Eden, gave I unto man his agency; And unto thy brethren have I said, and also given commandment, that they should love one another, and that they should choose me, their Father; but behold, they are without affection, and they hate their own blood; But behold, their sins shall be upon the heads of their fathers; Satan shall be their father, and misery shall be their doom; and the whole heavens shall weep over them, even all the workmanship of mine hands; wherefore should not the heavens weep, seeing these shall suffer? Wherefore, for this shall the heavens weep, yea, and all the workmanship of mine hands. And it came to pass that the Lord spake unto Enoch, and told Enoch all the doings of the children of men; wherefore Enoch knew, and looked upon their wickedness, and their misery, and wept and stretched forth his arms, and his heart swelled wide as eternity; and his bowels yearned; and all eternity shook."
A verse with a thought booklet tells us that the enfolding of God's words gives light and understanding. This is why it's important to study the scriptures every day. They are God's words. And we'll gain light and understanding as we immerse ourselves in them. Ps. 119: 130 "The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple."

Daily Thoughts
In the Old Testament I read a prophetic verse about how the Jews will ask Jesus at His Second Coming what are the wounds in His hands, and He will reply that He received them in the house of His friends. Zech. 13: 6 "And one shall say unto him, What are these wounds in thine hands? Then he shall answer, Those with which I was wounded in the house of my friends."
In the Pearl of Great Price I read that the Lord told Enoch to preach repentance unto the people and baptize them. Moses 7: 10-11 "And the Lord said unto me: Go to this people, and say unto them—Repent, lest I come out and smite them with a curse, and they die. And he gave unto me a commandment that I should baptize in the name of the Father, and of the Son, which is full of grace and truth, and of the Holy Ghost, which beareth record of the Father and the Son."
Some verses with a thought booklet tell us to set our priorities straight. It's common to worry about material things, but we need to seek first God's Kingdom. If we do that, the other things we need will be added unto us. I've noticed that in my own life. When I put God first in my life, other things seem to fall into place. Matt. 6: 31-34 "Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof."

Daily Thoughts
In the Old Testament it talks about how the Lord would defend the inhabitants of Jerusalem and destroy all nations that came against her. Zech. 12: 8-9 "In that day shall the Lord defend the inhabitants of Jerusalem; and he that is feeble among them at that day shall be as David; and the house of David shall be as God, as the angel of the Lord before them. And it shall come to pass in that day, that I will seek to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem."
In the Pearl of Great Price I read that Satan tempts us to become carnal, sensual and devilish. But since the days of Adam the Lord has taught us to call upon Him, repent of our sins, be baptized, and receive the Gift of the Holy Ghost. Salvation only comes through the Atonement of Jesus Christ. Moses 6: 49-52 "Behold Satan hath come among the children of men, and tempteth them to worship him; and men have become carnal, sensual, and devilish, and are shut out from the presence of God. But God hath made known unto our fathers that all men must repent. And he called upon our father Adam by his own voice, saying: I am God; I made the world, and men before they were in the flesh. And he also said unto him: If thou wilt turn unto me, and hearken unto my voice, and believe, and repent of all thy transgressions, and be baptized, even in water, in the name of mine Only Begotten Son, who is full of grace and truth, which is Jesus Christ, the only name which shall be given under heaven, whereby salvation shall come unto the children of men, ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost, asking all things in his name, and whatsoever ye shall ask, it shall be given you."
A verse with a thought booklet tells us that those who excuse the wicked and those who condemn the righteous are an abomination to the Lord. Prov. 17: 15 "He that justifieth the wicked, and he that condemneth the just, even they both are abomination to the Lord."

Daily Thoughts
In the Old Testament are verses that speak Messianically. Zechariah prophesies about how Jesus would be betrayed for thirty pieces of silver and it shall be cast to the potter in the house of the Lord. Zech. 11: 12-13 "And I said unto them, If ye think good, give me my price; and if not, forbear. So they weighed for my price thirty pieces of silver. And the Lord said unto me, Cast it unto the potter: a goodly price that I was prised at of them. And I took the thirty pieces of silver, and cast them to the potter in the house of the Lord."
In the Pearl of Great Price I read about the great wickedness that prevaiiled across the land. The Lord called Enoch to preach repentance unto this people and teach them the gospel. Can you imagine trying to preach to people like this? The thought of it intimidated Enoch as well, but the Lord assured him that he would have His Spirit to be with him and teach him what to say, and that he would have great power. When we do what the Lord commands us to do, even though it may be a very difficult thing, He will stand by us and help us accomplish what is needed. Moses 6: 15, 27-34 "And the children of men were numerous upon all the face of the land. And in those days Satan had great dominion among men, and raged in their hearts; and from thenceforth came wars and bloodshed; and a man's hand was against his own brother, in administering death, because of secret works, seeking for power. And he heard a voice from heaven, saying: Enoch, my son, prophesy unto this people, and say unto them—Repent, for thus saith the Lord: I am angry with this people, and my fierce anger is kindled against them; for their hearts have waxed hard, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes cannot see afar off; And for these many generations, ever since the day that I created them, have they gone astray, and have denied me, and have sought their own counsels in the dark; and in their own abominations have they devised murder, and have not kept the commandments, which I gave unto their father, Adam. Wherefore, they have foresworn themselves, and, by their oaths, they have brought upon themselves death; and a hell I have prepared for them, if they repent not; And this is a decree, which I have sent forth in the beginning of the world, from my own mouth, from the foundation thereof, and by the mouths of my servants, thy fathers, have I decreed it, even as it shall be sent forth in the world, unto the ends thereof. And when Enoch had heard these words, he bowed himself to the earth, before the Lord, and spake before the Lord, saying: Why is it that I have found favor in thy sight, and am but a lad, and all the people hate me; for I am slow of speech; wherefore am I thy servant? And the Lord said unto Enoch: Go forth and do as I have commanded thee, and no man shall pierce thee. Open thy mouth, and it shall be filled, and I will give thee utterance, for all flesh is in my hands, and I will do as seemeth me good. Say unto this people: Choose ye this day, to serve the Lord God who made you. Behold my Spirit is upon you, wherefore all thy words will I justify; and the mountains shall flee before you, and the rivers shall turn from their course; and thou shalt abide in me, and I in you; therefore walk with me."
Some verses with a thought booklet tell us that we should give freely to the poor and needy, sufficient for his wants, and not harden our hearts against him. The Lord has so abundantly blessed us. How can we not be willing to share with those in need? As we willingly give, not grudgingly, we will be greatly blessed. Deut. 15: 7-8 "If there be among you a poor man of one of thy brethren within any of thy gates in thy land which the Lord thy God giveth thee, thou shalt not harden thine heart, nor shut thine hand from thy poor brother: But thou shalt open thine hand wide unto him, and shalt surely lend him sufficient for his need, in that which he wanteth."

Daily Thoughts
In the Old Testament I read that the Lord will bring His people out of Egypt and gather them. They will pass through the sea of affliction and the Lord will strengthen them. They will walk up and down in the name of the Lord. Zech. 10: 10-12 "I will bring them again also out of the land of Egypt, and gather them out of Assyria; and I will bring them into the land of Gilead and Lebanon; and place shall not be found for them. And he shall pass through the sea with affliction, and shall smite the waves in the sea, and all the deeps of the river shall dry up: and the pride of Assyria shall be brought down, and the sceptre of Egypt shall depart away. And I will strengthen them in the Lord; and they shall walk up and down in his name, saith the Lord."
In the Pearl of Great Price we read that God was angry with the wicked and cursed the earth with a great curse because the works of darkness prevailed among all the sons of men and they would not hearken to the voice of the Lord, nor believe in the Only Begotten Son. Moses 5: 55-57 "And thus the works of darkness began to prevail among all the sons of men. And God cursed the earth with a sore curse, and was angry with the wicked, with all the sons of men whom he had made; For they would not hearken unto his voice, nor believe on his Only Begotten Son, even him whom he declared should come in the meridian of time, who was prepared from before the foundation of the world."
Some scriptures with a thought booklet tell us that if we fully obey the Lord, we will be blessed and there need be no poor among us. Deut. 15: 4-5 "Save when there shall be no poor among you; for the Lord shall greatly bless thee in the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee for an inheritance to possess it: Only if thou carefully hearken unto the voice of the Lord thy God, to observe to do all these commandments which I command thee this day."

Daily Thoughts
In the Old Testament I read that when we pray to the Lord, He gives us rain for the grass in our fields. But those who ask of idols have false dreams and vain comfort. They are like a flock with no shepherd. Zech. 10: 1-2 "Ask ye of the Lord rain in the time of the latter rain; so the Lord shall make bright clouds, and give them showers of rain, to every one grass in the field. For the idols have spoken vanity, and the diviners have seen a lie, and have told false dreams; they comfort in vain: therefore they went their way as a flock, they were troubled, because there was no shepherd."
In the Pearl of Great Price I read about how Adam obeyed the Lord in offering sacrifices even though he didn't know the reason why. It was only after he had obeyed that an angel explained that it was in similitude of the sacrifice of the Only Begotton Son, and he was given further instructions to repent, pray and do all things in the name of the Son. We don't always understand why we are commanded to do certain things but if we willingly obey anyway, we will gain understanding when the time is right for us to receive it. We need to obey and trust in the Lord, even when we don't know the reasons why. Moses 5: 6-8 "And after many days an angel of the Lord appeared unto Adam, saying: Why dost thou offer sacrifices unto the Lord? And Adam said unto him: I know not, save the Lord commanded me. And then the angel spake, saying: This thing is a similitude of the sacrifice of the Only Begotten of the Father, which is full of grace and truth. Wherefore, thou shalt do all that thou doest in the name of the Son, and thou shalt repent and call upon God in the name of the Son forevermore."
Some verses with a thought booklet tell us that the Lord is a God of comfort and will comfort us in all our tribulations. And after we have been comforted in our troubles, we need to likewise comfort others. We may wonder why we had to suffer through a certain trial in our lives. The reason might possibly be so that we could understand and be commpassionate toward someone else who might cross our path who is going through a similar trial. If we've gotten through it ourselves, we can help someone else get through it too. 2 Cor. 1: 3-4 "Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God."

Daily Thoughts
In the Old Testament I read about how the Lord would free the prisoners out of the pit by the blood of His covenant. He would save His people as His flock. Oh how great His goodness and beauty! Zech. 9: 11, 16-17 "As for thee also, by the blood of thy covenant I have sent forth thy prisoners out of the pit wherein is no water. And the Lord their God shall save them in that day as the flock of his people: for they shall be as the stones of a crown, lifted up as an ensign upon his land. For how great is his goodness, and how great is his beauty! corn shall make the young men cheerful, and new wine the maids."
In the Pearl of Great Price I read that it is not good that man should be alone, which is why God created a help meet for him. Moses 3: 18 "And I, the Lord God, said unto mine Only Begotten, that it was not good that the man should be alone; wherefore, I will make an help meet for him."
Some scriptures with a thought booklet paint a picture of a ship out in the middle of a stormy sea, with huge waves crashing all around them. How scary would that be! In yet if people who find themselves in such dire straits will call upon the Lord, He can calm the troubled waters which surround them and bring them into His safe haven. He can still the storm and hush the waves if we'll turn to Him. When the storms of life rage, God is availble to stand by us. Ps. 107: 23-31 "They that go down to the sea in ships, that do business in great waters; These see the works of the Lord, and his wonders in the deep. For he commandeth, and raiseth the stormy wind, which lifteth up the waves thereof. They mount up to the heaven, they go down again to the depths: their soul is melted because of trouble. They reel to and fro, and stagger like a drunken man, and are at their wits' end. Then they cry unto the Lord in their trouble, and he bringeth them out of their distresses. He maketh the storm a calm, so that the waves thereof are still. Then are they glad because they be quiet; so he bringeth them unto their desired haven. Oh that men would praise the Lord for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!"

Daily Thoughts
In the Old Testament I read a prophecy regarding Jesus Christ--how He would would be just and bring salvation and how He would be lowly and come riding upon an ass. Keep in mind that these prophecies were made hundreds of years before Jesus was born, in yet they were fulfilled in every detail. Zech. 9: 9 "Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass."
In the Pearl of Great Price we read that after the Lord created the heavens and the earth, He rested from all His work on the seventh day. If having a Sabbath Day of rest was important, even for the Lord, how important is it for us? Moses 3: 1-3 "Thus the heaven and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. And on the seventh day I, God, ended my work, and all things which I had made; and I rested on the seventh day from all my work, and all things which I had made were finished, and I, God, saw that they were good; And I, God, blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it; because that in it I had rested from all my work which I, God, had created and made."
A verse with a thought booklet tells us that we will be rewarded for our work as we trust in the Lord. We can take refuge under the wings of His care. What a comforting thing to picture in our minds. Ruth 2: 12 "The Lord recompense thy work, and a full reward be given thee of the Lord God of Israel, under whose wings thou art come to trust."

Daily Thoughts
In the Old Testament I read that every man should speak the truth to his neighbor and execute the judgment of truth and peace. No one should imagine evil in their hearts against their neighbor. The Lord hates these things. Zech. 8: 16-17 "These are the things that ye shall do; Speak ye every man the truth to his neighbour; execute the judgment of truth and peace in your gates: And let none of you imagine evil in your hearts against his neighbour; and love no false oath: for all these are things that I hate, saith the Lord."
In the Pearl of Great Price we're told that the work and glory of God is to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man. What great love He has for each of us! Moses 1: 39 "For behold, this is my work and my glory—to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man."
A verse with a thought booklet tells us that when we're kind to the poor, it's like lending to the Lord and He will reward us for what we have done. Prov. 19: 17 "He that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto the Lord; and that which he hath given will he pay him again."

Daily Thoughts
In the Old Testament I read that as the Israelites had been a curse among the heathen in times past, they would now be a blessing. They should fear not and let their hands be strong, for the Lord would save them. Zech. 8: 13 "And it shall come to pass, that as ye were a curse among the heathen, O house of Judah, and house of Israel; so will I save you, and ye shall be a blessing: fear not, but let your hands be strong."
In the Pearl of Great Price I read that Moses did not cease calling upon God and inquiring of Him. Because he stayed close to the Lord, it was easy for him to discern between God and Satan and Satan was unable to deceive him. Moses told Satan to depart from him. If we remain close to the Lord and turn to Him, we likewise will be able to tell Satan to leave us alone. Moses 1: 18 "And again Moses said: I will not cease to call upon God, I have other things to inquire of him: for his glory has been upon me, wherefore I can judge between him and thee. Depart hence, Satan."
Some scriptures with a thought booklet tell the parable of the talents. When the Lord gives us blessings, we're expected to use them instead of hiding them away. If we're blessed with wealth, we need to use it to do good. If we're blessed with talents and abilities, we're expected to use them to help others and benefit their lives. Where much is given, much is expected. Let's use what God has given us in such a way that when we meet the Lord at Judgment Day, He'll say to us, "Well done, thou good and faithful servant." Matt. 25: 14-30 "For the kingdom of heaven is as a man travelling into a far country, who called his own servants, and delivered unto them his goods. And unto one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one; to every man according to his several ability; and straightway took his journey. Then he that had received the five talents went and traded with the same, and made them other five talents. And likewise he that had received two, he also gained other two. But he that had received one went and digged in the earth, and hid his lord's money. After a long time the lord of those servants cometh, and reckoneth with them. And so he that had received five talents came and brought other five talents, saying, Lord, thou deliveredst unto me five talents: behold, I have gained beside them five talents more. His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord. He also that had received two talents came and said, Lord, thou deliveredst unto me two talents: behold, I have gained two other talents beside them. His lord said unto him, Well done, good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord. Then he which had received the one talent came and said, Lord, I knew thee that thou art an hard man, reaping where thou hast not sown, and gathering where thou hast not strawed: And I was afraid, and went and hid thy talent in the earth: lo, there thou hast that is thine. His lord answered and said unto him, Thou wicked and slothful servant, thou knewest that I reap where I sowed not, and gather where I have not strawed: Thou oughtest therefore to have put my money to the exchangers, and then at my coming I should have received mine own with usury. Take therefore the talent from him, and give it unto him which hath ten talents. For unto every one that hath shall be given, and he shall have abundance: but from him that hath not shall be taken away even that which he hath. And cast ye the unprofitable servant into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth."

Daily Thoughts
In the Old Testament I read that the Lord would save His people and bring them to dwell in the midst of Jerusalem where they would be His people and He would be their God. Zech. 8: 7-8 "Thus saith the Lord of hosts; Behold, I will save my people from the east country, and from the west country; And I will bring them, and they shall dwell in the midst of Jerusalem: and they shall be my people, and I will be their God, in truth and in righteousness."
In the D&C I read that Joseph Smith, Brigham Young and many others were taught in the Spirit world before they were born, and prepared to come forth at the time they did to help spread forth the gospel. Also, when faithful elders depart this life they continue their labors of preaching the gospel in the world of spirits, bringing light to those who died without a knowledge of these things. The dead who are willing to repent and receive ordinances of the gospel done in their behalf will be heirs to salvation. D&C 138: 53-59 "The Prophet Joseph Smith, and my father, Hyrum Smith, Brigham Young, John Taylor, Wilford Woodruff, and other choice spirits who were reserved to come forth in the fulness of times to take part in laying the foundations of the great latter-day work, Including the building of the temples and the performance of ordinances therein for the redemption of the dead, were also in the spirit world. I observed that they were also among the noble and great ones who were chosen in the beginning to be rulers in the Church of God. Even before they were born, they, with many others, received their first lessons in the world of spirits and were prepared to come forth in the due time of the Lord to labor in his vineyard for the salvation of the souls of men. I beheld that the faithful elders of this dispensation, when they depart from mortal life, continue their labors in the preaching of the gospel of repentance and redemption, through the sacrifice of the Only Begotten Son of God, among those who are in darkness and under the bondage of sin in the great world of the spirits of the dead. The dead who repent will be redeemed, through obedience to the ordinances of the house of God, And after they have paid the penalty of their transgressions, and are washed clean, shall receive a reward according to their works, for they are heirs of salvation."
Some scriptures with a thought booklet remind us that we brought nothing into this world when we came and we can't take anything with us when we go--kind of puts wordly wealth into prospective. We need to be content with having food and clothing instead of wishing for luxuries that will only bring us temptation and can be a snare to us. The love of money is the root of all evil and has caused many people to stray from the faith and reap many sorrows upon themselves. And notice that this is the love of money, not money itself. If we have money and use it to bless others and do good that is different from using money to buy costly things and try to make ourselves look better than others. It's not the money itself that is evil, it's how we place our hearts upon it and the things it can buy. 1 Tim. 6: 3-10 "If any man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness; He is proud, knowing nothing, but doting about questions and strifes of words, whereof cometh envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings, Perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness: from such withdraw thyself. But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. And having food and raiment let us be therewith content. But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition. For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows."

Daily Thoughts
In the Old Testament I read that the word of God came to Zechariah the prophet telling the people to execute true judgment and mercy and have compassion on others. However, the people refused to listen, stopping up their ears so they wouldn't have to hear. They turned their hearts to stone and refused to hear the law. Because of this, the Lord would not hear them and scattered them as a whirlwind. Do we listen to what the prophets have to say to us and obey? Or do we plug or ears and refuse to listen? Zech. 7: 8-14 "And the word of the Lord came unto Zechariah, saying, Thus speaketh the Lord of hosts, saying, Execute true judgment, and shew mercy and compassions every man to his brother: And oppress not the widow, nor the fatherless, the stranger, nor the poor; and let none of you imagine evil against his brother in your heart. But they refused to hearken, and pulled away the shoulder, and stopped their ears, that they should not hear. Yea, they made their hearts as an adamant stone, lest they should hear the law, and the words which the Lord of hosts hath sent in his spirit by the former prophets: therefore came a great wrath from the Lord of hosts. Therefore it is come to pass, that as he cried, and they would not hear; so they cried, and I would not hear, saith the Lord of hosts: But I scattered them with a whirlwind among all the nations whom they knew not. Thus the land was desolate after them, that no man passed through nor returned: for they laid the pleasant land desolate."
In the D&C I read that after Jesus was crucified, He went to the righteous dead and organized them, commissioning them to go forth and preach the gospel to the dead who had not received it when they were living. What a fair and just God--to give everyone an opportunity to accept the gospel and be baptized. If they weren't baptized in this life, they could receive this necessary ordinance vicariously. D&C 138: 25-37 "I marveled, for I understood that the Savior spent about three years in his ministry among the Jews and those of the house of Israel, endeavoring to teach them the everlasting gospel and call them unto repentance; And yet, notwithstanding his mighty works, and miracles, and proclamation of the truth, in great power and authority, there were but few who hearkened to his voice, and rejoiced in his presence, and received salvation at his hands. But his ministry among those who were dead was limited to the brief time intervening between the crucifixion and his resurrection; And I wondered at the words of Peter—wherein he said that the Son of God preached unto the spirits in prison, who sometime were disobedient, when once the long-suffering of God waited in the days of Noah—and how it was possible for him to preach to those spirits and perform the necessary labor among them in so short a time. And as I wondered, my eyes were opened, and my understanding quickened, and I perceived that the Lord went not in person among the wicked and the disobedient who had rejected the truth, to teach them; But behold, from among the righteous, he organized his forces and appointed messengers, clothed with power and authority, and commissioned them to go forth and carry the light of the gospel to them that were in darkness, even to all the spirits of men; and thus was the gospel preached to the dead. And the chosen messengers went forth to declare the acceptable day of the Lord and proclaim liberty to the captives who were bound, even unto all who would repent of their sins and receive the gospel. Thus was the gospel preached to those who had died in their sins, without a knowledge of the truth, or in transgression, having rejected the prophets. These were taught faith in God, repentance from sin, vicarious baptism for the remission of sins, the gift of the Holy Ghost by the laying on of hands, And all other principles of the gospel that were necessary for them to know in order to qualify themselves that they might be judged according to men in the flesh, but live according to God in the spirit. And so it was made known among the dead, both small and great, the unrighteous as well as the faithful, that redemption had been wrought through the sacrifice of the Son of God upon the cross. Thus was it made known that our Redeemer spent his time during his sojourn in the world of spirits, instructing and preparing the faithful spirits of the prophets who had testified of him in the flesh; That they might carry the message of redemption unto all the dead, unto whom he could not go personally, because of their rebellion and transgression, that they through the ministration of his servants might also hear his words."
Some scriptures with a thought booklet tell the story of the rich man and Lazarus. The rich man had an easy life of wealth but did nothing to help the poor Lazarus who sat at his gate day after day. It was within his power to help Lazarus, but he did nothing. It doesn't say he did anything cruel to him. He didn't kick him or mock him as he passed him by. He merely neglected him. But in the next life he was sorely punsihed, while Lazarus received a great reward. How serious is it to neglect to do good when it's within our power to help people? Of course there is much suffering in the world and we can't save everyone. But if we're in tune with the Spirit, we can be guided in how we can help specific people who cross our path, not just financially but also by giving of our time and service. Or sometimes it may be by just saying the right thing they need to hear, providing a listening ear, or simply by lifting their day with a smile. Do we heed these promptings? Do we do what is within our power to do good for others? If not, we may be commiting a sin of omission which we'll be held accountable for. Another point I got out of this story is how the rich man wanted Lazarus to return from the dead to warn his five brothers to change their lives so they wouldn't end up like he did. But the rich man was told that if they wouldn't listen to the prophets, they wouldn't listen to someone who spoke to them from the dead. Even when someone receives visions of angels, they don't always change their lives permanently. Laman and Lemuel are a good example of that. And several people from Joseph Smith's day who had marvelous manifestations didn't remain faithful. We need to be willing to heed the words of the scriptures and the prophets. If we're not willing to do that, visitations from angels isn't going to help. Luke 16: 19-31 "There was a certain rich man, which was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day: And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate, full of sores, And desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man's table: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores. And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried; And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame. But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented. And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence. Then he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father's house: For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment. Abraham saith unto him, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them. And he said, Nay, father Abraham: but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent. And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead."

Daily Thoughts
In the Old Testament I read that the temple of the Lord would be built if we will diligently obey the voice of the Lord our God. Zech. 6: 15 "And they that are far off shall come and build in the temple of the Lord, and ye shall know that the Lord of hosts hath sent me unto you. And this shall come to pass, if ye will diligently obey the voice of the Lord your God."
In the D&C I read how Joseph F. Smith saw a vision of the righeous dead who had departed this life with a firm hope of a glorious resurrection. They were filled with joy and rejoicing. If we remain faithful, great will be our reward. D&C 138: 11-15 "As I pondered over these things which are written, the eyes of my understanding were opened, and the Spirit of the Lord rested upon me, and I saw the hosts of the dead, both small and great. And there were gathered together in one place an innumerable company of the spirits of the just, who had been faithful in the testimony of Jesus while they lived in mortality; And who had offered sacrifice in the similitude of the great sacrifice of the Son of God, and had suffered tribulation in their Redeemer's name. All these had departed the mortal life, firm in the hope of a glorious resurrection, through the grace of God the Father and his Only Begotten Son, Jesus Christ. I beheld that they were filled with joy and gladness, and were rejoicing together because the day of their deliverance was at hand."
A verse with a thought booklet tells us that the Lord is compassionate and gracious. He is slow to anger and abounds in love and faithfulness. Wouldn't this world be a wonderful world if all of us followed the Lord's example in how we dealt with other people? How patient and kind are we to those around us? How forgiving and full of love? Ps. 86: 15 "But thou, O Lord, art a God full of compassion, and gracious, longsuffering, and plenteous in mercy and truth."

Daily Thoughts
In the Old Testament I read the words of the Lord to Zechariah, telling him to call the people to repentance and admonishing them not to be like their fathers who would not listen to prophets who told them to turn from their evil ways. Zech. 1: 1-4 "In the eighth month, in the second year of Darius, came the word of the Lord unto Zechariah, the son of Berechiah, the son of Iddo the prophet, saying, The Lord hath been sore displeased with your fathers. Therefore say thou unto them, Thus saith the Lord of hosts; Turn ye unto me, saith the Lord of hosts, and I will turn unto you, saith the Lord of hosts. Be ye not as your fathers, unto whom the former prophets have cried, saying, Thus saith the Lord of hosts; Turn ye now from your evil ways, and from your evil doings: but they did not hear, nor hearken unto me, saith the Lord."
In the D&C I read about the wonderful doctrine of redemption of the dead. All those who pass away without learning about the gospel or being baptized will receive the opportunity to learn about the gospel in the next life, and baptisms in their behalf can be performed by those still living. Also, children who die before the age of accountability will be saved in the Celestial Kingdom as well. People are not just judged by what they do, but by the intent of their hearts and by what they would have done had they been given the opportunity. What a just and loving God! D&C 137: 5-10 "I saw Father Adam and Abraham; and my father and my mother; my brother Alvin, that has long since slept; And marveled how it was that he had obtained an inheritance in that kingdom, seeing that he had departed this life before the Lord had set his hand to gather Israel the second time, and had not been baptized for the remission of sins. Thus came the voice of the Lord unto me, saying: All who have died without a knowledge of this gospel, who would have received it if they had been permitted to tarry, shall be heirs of the celestial kingdom of God; Also all that shall die henceforth without a knowledge of it, who would have received it with all their hearts, shall be heirs of that kingdom; For I, the Lord, will judge all men according to their works, according to the desire of their hearts. And I also beheld that all children who die before they arrive at the years of accountability are saved in the celestial kingdom of heaven."
A verse with a thought booklet tells us that if we walk uprightly, the Lord will not withhold any good thing from us. Does this mean that if we do what's right, we'll get everything we pray for? Not necessarily. The Lord knows far better than we do what really is good for us. Sometimes going through trials and tribulations is just what we need to make us strong and teach us lessons we could not learn in any other way. We need to trust in Him. Ps. 84: 11 "For the Lord God is a sun and shield: the Lord will give grace and glory: no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly."

Daily Thoughts
In the Old Testament I read about how the Lord came to Haggai and told him to speak to Zerubbabel, telling him that he would destroy the kingdoms of the wicked and overthrow their chariots, but that He had chosen Zerubbabel and would make of his a signet. Hag. 2: 20-23 "And again the word of the Lord came unto Haggai in the four and twentieth day of the month, saying, Speak to Zerubbabel, governor of Judah, saying, I will shake the heavens and the earth; And I will overthrow the throne of kingdoms, and I will destroy the strength of the kingdoms of the heathen; and I will overthrow the chariots, and those that ride in them; and the horses and their riders shall come down, every one by the sword of his brother. In that day, saith the Lord of hosts, will I take thee, O Zerubbabel, my servant, the son of Shealtiel, saith the Lord, and will make thee as a signet: for I have chosen thee, saith the Lord of hosts."
In the D&C I read about how we need to stop contending with one another and how we need to quit speaking evil of each other. Contention is of the devil. And there's an old saying that if you can't say something nice about another person, you should not say anything at all. D&C 136: 23 "Cease to contend one with another; cease to speak evil one of another."
Some scriptures with a thought booklet go right along with this, emphasizing how important the words we speak are. The tongue is a small thing. But just like a small helm can direct a large ship or a small bit in a horse's mouth can control him, so can the small tongue have a major impact in our life and the lives of those around us. The tongue can speak kind and gentle words that will soothe and comfort. Or it can speak bitter, angry words that will cause damage and pain. This should not be! Even though it's very difficult to rule the tongue, if we're wise we'll show only good conversation full of meekness. Our words can make all the difference in the world to those around us--for good or bad. Let's make sure our words edify and encourage and make a positive difference in the lives of others. James 3: 3-13 "Behold, we put bits in the horses' mouths, that they may obey us; and we turn about their whole body. Behold also the ships, which though they be so great, and are driven of fierce winds, yet are they turned about with a very small helm, whithersoever the governor listeth. Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth! And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell. For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed of mankind: But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God. Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be. Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and bitter? Can the fig tree, my brethren, bear olive berries? either a vine, figs? so can no fountain both yield salt water and fresh. Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him shew out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom."

Daily Thoughts
In the Old Testament I read that the Lord would be in the midst of the righteous and there would be joy and singing. He will gather those who are sorrowful and undo all that afflicted them. What a blessed and wonderful day this will be! We can know that all our sorrows and afflictions will someday be turned into joy and singing if we endure to the end and do what is right. Zeph. 3: 17-20 "The Lord thy God in the midst of thee is mighty; he will save, he will rejoice over thee with joy; he will rest in his love, he will joy over thee with singing. I will gather them that are sorrowful for the solemn assembly, who are of thee, to whom the reproach of it was a burden. Behold, at that time I will undo all that afflict thee: and I will save her that halteth, and gather her that was driven out; and I will get them praise and fame in every land where they have been put to shame. At that time will I bring you again, even in the time that I gather you: for I will make you a name and a praise among all people of the earth, when I turn back your captivity before your eyes, saith the Lord."
In the D&C we're told that if we do what the Lord counsels us to do, we don't need to fear what our enemies will do--they will be powerless to stop the Lord's work from progressing. But any man who does not seek the Lord's counsel but instead wants to build himself up, will have no power. There is power in keeping the Lord's commandments and doing His will. D&C 136: 17-19 "Go thy way and do as I have told you, and fear not thine enemies; for they shall not have power to stop my work. Zion shall be redeemed in mine own due time. And if any man shall seek to build up himself, and seeketh not my counsel, he shall have no power, and his folly shall be made manifest."
A verse with a thought booklet announces peace and good will toward men at the birth of Christ. But all you have to do is watch the nightly news to wonder where the peace is. How do we find peace in this world of turmoil? It's still found the same place it was found 2,000 years ago when this scripture was written--in Jesus Christ. Luke 2: 14 "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men."

Daily Thoughts
In the Old Testament I read that the haughty who rejoice in their pride and who transgress against the Lord will be taken away out of the midst of the people. Zeph. 3: 11 "In that day shalt thou not be ashamed for all thy doings, wherein thou hast transgressed against me: for then I will take away out of the midst of thee them that rejoice in thy pride, and thou shalt no more be haughty because of my holy mountain."
In the D&C I read the words of John Taylor who described the martyrdom of Joseph Smith and his brother Hyrum, and also tells about the great things that Joseph Smith accomplished in his short life, in restoring the gospel to the earth. D&C 135: 1-3 "To seal the testimony of this book and the Book of Mormon, we announce the martyrdom of Joseph Smith the Prophet, and Hyrum Smith the Patriarch. They were shot in Carthage jail, on the 27th of June, 1844, about five o'clock p.m., by an armed mob—painted black—of from 150 to 200 persons. Hyrum was shot first and fell calmly, exclaiming: I am a dead man! Joseph leaped from the window, and was shot dead in the attempt, exclaiming: O Lord my God! They were both shot after they were dead, in a brutal manner, and both received four balls. John Taylor and Willard Richards, two of the Twelve, were the only persons in the room at the time; the former was wounded in a savage manner with four balls, but has since recovered; the latter, through the providence of God, escaped, without even a hole in his robe. Joseph Smith, the Prophet and Seer of the Lord, has done more, save Jesus only, for the salvation of men in this world, than any other man that ever lived in it. In the short space of twenty years, he has brought forth the Book of Mormon, which he translated by the gift and power of God, and has been the means of publishing it on two continents; has sent the fulness of the everlasting gospel, which it contained, to the four quarters of the earth; has brought forth the revelations and commandments which compose this book of Doctrine and Covenants, and many other wise documents and instructions for the benefit of the children of men; gathered many thousands of the Latter-day Saints, founded a great city, and left a fame and name that cannot be slain. He lived great, and he died great in the eyes of God and his people; and like most of the Lord's anointed in ancient times, has sealed his mission and his works with his own blood; and so has his brother Hyrum. In life they were not divided, and in death they were not separated!"
A verse with a thought booklet says that God put man in the Garden of Eden so he could dress it and keep it. Now here was God who had just created the earth and everything on it. If He had wanted to, He could have taken care of the Garden of Eden Himself. So why did He expect Adam and Eve to work in the garden and tend it? God could have avoided creating weeds and could have created crops that would take care of themselves and fall into our mouths without having to be harvested. He is all powerful. He could have made life much easier for us. So why didn't He make a world where we wouldn't have to do anything? It was for our benefit! Work is good and actually helps us grow. It is a good thing for us to do productive things and accomplish goals. God did not create a world for us to sit around and be lazy in. He gives us things to do. And it's for our benefit that we do them. Gen. 2: 15 "And the Lord God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it."

Daily Thoughts
In the Old Testament it talks about how woe will come to those who are filthy and polluted. Nations will be cut off and made desolate, and their streets waste. Those who are corrupt will be punished for their doings and the fierce anger of the Lord will be poured out upon them. All good reasons for us to repent! Zeph. 3: 1-8 "Woe to her that is filthy and polluted, to the oppressing city! She obeyed not the voice; she received not correction; she trusted not in the Lord; she drew not near to her God. Her princes within her are roaring lions; her judges are evening wolves; they gnaw not the bones till the morrow. Her prophets are light and treacherous persons: her priests have polluted the sanctuary, they have done violence to the law. The just Lord is in the midst thereof; he will not do iniquity: every morning doth he bring his judgment to light, he faileth not; but the unjust knoweth no shame. I have cut off the nations: their towers are desolate; I made their streets waste, that none passeth by: their cities are destroyed, so that there is no man, that there is none inhabitant. I said, Surely thou wilt fear me, thou wilt receive instruction; so their dwelling should not be cut off, howsoever I punished them: but they rose early, and corrupted all their doings. Therefore wait ye upon me, saith the Lord, until the day that I rise up to the prey: for my determination is to gather the nations, that I may assemble the kingdoms, to pour upon them mine indignation, even all my fierce anger: for all the earth shall be devoured with the fire of my jealousy."
In the D&C I read that eternal life will be given to everyone who repents and sanctifies themselves before God. But those who refuse to listen to the voice of the Lord will be cut off. Again, good reasons to repent! D&C 133: 62-63 "And unto him that repenteth and sanctifieth himself before the Lord shall be given eternal life. And upon them that hearken not to the voice of the Lord shall be fulfilled that which was written by the prophet Moses, that they should be cut off from among the people."
Some scriptures with a thought booklet tell us that Jesus is the door by which men enter to be saved. He has come to give us life--and not just any life, but abundant life! We are to live life to the fullest and enjoy it. John 10: 9-10 "I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture. The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly."

Daily Thoughts
In the Old Testament we're told to seek meekness, righteousness, and to seek the Lord. Zeph. 2: 3 "Seek ye the Lord , all ye meek of the earth, which have wrought his judgment; seek righteousness, seek meekness: it may be ye shall be hid in the day of the Lord's anger."
In the D&C we're told that the gospel will be preached to every nation, tongue and people. This is quite a daunting task! But when I think back to when I was a teenager how impossible it seemed that the gospel could ever be preached in Russia or Eastern Germany, I realize that nothing is impossible to the Lord. Now there are temples in places where once it seemed impossible for missionary work to go forth. This work will move forward, and we need to do our part to help it progress. D&C 133: 37 "And this gospel shall be preached unto every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people."
A verse with a thought booklet admonishes us to throw off everything that hinders our progress or weighs us down and every sin that so easily entangles us so that we can run with perserverance the race that is marked out for us. When running a race, we do much better without heavy things weighing us down or snares to get tangled up in. Let's free ourselves from anything holding us back so we can move forward toward the goal of eternal life. Heb. 12: 1 "Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,"

Daily Thoughts
In the Old Testament Habakkuk trembles at the majesty and greatness of God. Hab. 3: 5-6, 10-12 "Before him went the pestilence, and burning coals went forth at his feet. He stood, and measured the earth: he beheld, and drove asunder the nations; and the everlasting mountains were scattered, the perpetual hills did bow: his ways are everlasting. The mountains saw thee, and they trembled: the overflowing of the water passed by: the deep uttered his voice, and lifted up his hands on high. The sun and moon stood still in their habitation: at the light of thine arrows they went, and at the shining of thy glittering spear. Thou didst march through the land in indignation, thou didst thresh the heathen in anger."
In the D&C we're told to go out from Babylon (the world and its sins) and be clean that bear the vessels of the Lord. D&C 133: 5 "Go ye out from Babylon. Be ye clean that bear the vessels of the Lord."
Some scriptures with a thought booklet tell us to delight in the Lord, trust Him, and do good. He will give us the desires of our heart. If we truly delight in the Lord, we will love Him with all our hearts and we will want to please Him and keep His commandments. And the desires of our heart will be aligned with His will. We're willing to trust in Him with whatever His will is. So of course He'll grant us the desires of our heart! Ps. 37: 3-4 "Trust in the Lord, and do good; so shalt thou dwell in the land, and verily thou shalt be fed. Delight thyself also in the Lord; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart."

Daily Thoughts
In the Old Testament it tells us that idols have no power and it is foolish to trust in them. Hab. 2: 18-20 "What profiteth the graven image that the maker thereof hath graven it; the molten image, and a teacher of lies, that the maker of his work trusteth therein, to make dumb idols? Woe unto him that saith to the wood, Awake; to the dumb stone, Arise, it shall teach! Behold, it is laid over with gold and silver, and there is no breath at all in the midst of it. But the Lord is in his holy temple: let all the earth keep silence before him."
In the D&C Joseph Smith was told that the Lord would be with him through all eternity and that a throne had been prepared for him in the kingdom of the Father. Have we lived our lives so that this can be true of us as well? D&C 132: 49 "For I am the Lord thy God, and will be with thee even unto the end of the world, and through all eternity; for verily I seal upon you your exaltation, and prepare a throne for you in the kingdom of my Father, with Abraham your father."
A verse with a thought booklet tells us that we can be redeemed from our sins through the blood of Christ. He suffered for our sins so that we wouldn't have to if we'd be willing to repent. Col. 1: 14 "In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:"
